Squid Game was, without a doubt, the biggest show on Earth for a while. Netflix has been trying to replicate the success of the South Korean show since then, and they haven’t really achieved that goal. However, Netflix has become a true hub for South Korean content here in the West, and so it makes sense that a second season of the popular show would have come sooner or later. Netflix has now announced that the second season is a reality and that some cast members of the original show will come back along with some new challengers.
A new teaser trailer announces some of the cast for the new season. Wi Ha-jun and Gong Yoo will return for the second season. Both actors are some of the most popular drama actors in the Asian country, so it makes sense for them to return. Especially Wi Han-jun, whose character...

Squid Game was a legit pop culture phenomenon when it came out in the fall of 2021. No one expected a Korean show like this to have such an impact in North America, but the show became a bona-fide sensation, with the show quickly earning a season two renewal. While the release date hasn’t been revealed yet, at Netflix’s Tudum event, we got a look at the new cast, who join our two returning players, Lee Jung-jae as Seong Gi-hun and Lee Byung-hun as Hwang In-ho as the Front Man (as well as the recruiter played by Gong You).
According to Netflix’s Tudum site, the four new players are Korean stars “Yim Si-wan (Unlocked), Kang Ha-neul (The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure), Park Sung-hoon (The Glory) and Yang Dong-geun (Yaksha: Ruthless Operations).” No news yet on who they’re playing, but expect more info on the new season soon.

Stepping up from a low-budget indie affair straight to a mainstream, commercial effort is no small task, but director Kim Joo-hwan undeniably succeeded with “Midnight Runners.” Dominating the box office upon release (it was the sixth highest grossing film of 2017 in Korea), this buddy cop action comedy strikes an enthralling balance between farcically daft humour and grounded emotion. It may not provoke any attentive self-discussions or chime in with imperative sociopolitical commentary, but with an enthused young cast and plenty of laughs, there are indisputably worse things to do than watch this movie.
“Midnight Runners” is available from Echelon Studios
At first though, “Midnight Runners” dials down the hilarity, fixating on an intriguing part of the education system: Police Universities. Rigorously structured, forcing applicants to shave their heads upon admission and subjecting them to late-night training drills, they steer far from the norm when it comes to methodology. Gone are practical,...

Historical romance K-dramas encompass many storyline tropes that often make for a good watch. The Royal Crown Prince or king must be riddled with dark omens of dethronement or political chaos within the palace. Amid the darkness, there is a shining light of unsuspecting true love with the female lead. Over the years, historical K-dramas have had some bonuses like gender-bender love like The King’s Affection. Here are some of the best historical romance K-dramas to binge-watch.
Shin Hye-sun in the historical romance K-drama ‘Mr. Queen’ | via tvN 5. ‘Mr. Queen’ has a top male chef travel through time to become a queen
The historical romance K-drama list cannot be without the 2020 drama Mr. Queen. Its storyline captured attention thanks to its unique take on romance. The lead is both male and female. In modern times, Jang Bong-hwan (Choi Jin-hyuk) is a cocky elite chef for the Blue House who runs into trouble.

Back in 2014, period adventure comedy “The Pirates” released to much admiration from the public, becoming the third highest grossing feature of the year. Even today, it sits comfortably in the top 30 highest grossing Korean films of all time at the domestic box-office. As a result, conversation of a follow-up had always been on the table, but several reasons, including leading pair Son Ye-jin and Kim Nam-gil’s refusal to return to the high waters, meant that the sequel couldn’t materialise until now, when producers decided to change tracks with an all new director, new characters and cast to bring us “The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure”. After being the first to cross 1 million admissions in Korea this year and to date being the highest grossing Korean production on 2022, it is now streaming worldwide exclusively on Netflix.

Woo Moo-chi was once the leader of a band of outlaws. He and his right-hand man, Kang Seob, must team up with a motley crew of pirates led by captain, Hae Rang, to embark on a treacherous ocean voyage searching for the lost treasure of the Goryeo royal family. The pirates find themselves fighting for the hidden treasure against rebel, Bu Heung-soo.
This swashbuckling period adventure, also known as The Pirates: Goblin Flag, is a spiritual sequel to the 2014 box-office hit The Pirates. Kim Jeong-hoon (The Accidental Detective) takes over as director with the story by Chun Sung-il, one of the screenwriters from the first movie. It also features a star-studded cast led by Kang Ha-neul (Waiting for Rain), Han Hyo-joo (The Sun Does Not Move), Lee Kwang-soo (Sinkhole), Kwon Sang-woo (Hitman: Agent Jun), Kim Sung-oh (Night of the Undead), Chae Soo-bin (Sweet & Sour) and K-pop idol Sehun from...

Multi-starrer Christmas films have been being released around the holiday season for a while now and the fad seems to have finally reached South Korean shores. After “New Year Blues” last year, this year sees director Kwak Jae-yong, who is no stranger to the mushy romance genre after having made such classics as “My Sassy Girl”, “Windstuck” and “The Classic”, take on a similar project, with a massive star-cast boasting of impressive talents both young and young-at-heart.
Synopsis
The story of people who met each other at Hotel Emros during the New Year holidays, each with their own stories and creating relationships in their own ways.
As expected from the storyline, the characters are divided in both the staff and guests working in the Hotel. The staff comprises of Han Ji-min (“Miss Baek”), who plays the hotel manager, Lee Dong-wook (“The Beauty Inside”) as the hotel’s CEO, Yoona (“Exit”) as the receptionist,...

Romantic drama “Waiting For Rain” became the fourth local film in as many weeks to head the Korean box office. It held off new release U.S. movie “The Courier.”
“Rain” scored $1.05 million from 122,000 admissions over the weekend, giving a five-day total of $1.41 million. Chasing, “The Courier” delivered $756,000 from 88,000 admissions, for a five-day collection of $1.05 million.
“Rain” accounted for 26% of the national weekend box office, while “The Courier” took 19%. Together they helped the weekend total to $4.07 million, near to the top end of the recent range, and a 28% week-on-week improvement.
In an attempt to help audiences overcome their hesitation distributors are trying out a range of local titles from different genres. Korean films to have topped the chart in the last month have included historical drama “The Book of Fish”, sci-fi actioner “Seobok” and mystery thriller “Recalled.” But none managed to hold on to that position for more than one...

After the abysmal year for cinema that 2020 was, one can only hope that 2021 proves to be a lot better for films the world over. While the coronavirus situation ebbs and flows in various places, film releases are getting more and more frequent. Even if studios are still slightly hesitant to release some tentpole films, audiences are slowly finding their way back into the theatres.
Due to the delay in production and release on several projects last year, films that would otherwise have released back them are only now beginning to find their way into theatres or on Ott platforms, while some studios have even decided to indefinitely postpone production on some major titles. As a result, our list of Most Anticipated Korean Films of 2020 (which has been updated with the status of each project to the best of our knowledge) still remains valid and can be checked out to see...

The film tells the tragic story of Yun Dong-ju and his best friend Song Mong-kyu. It starts in the 50’s, during their university days, when they both write poetry, but Song is the one who is recognized first. This event would shape their relationship to a large degree, with Yun adopting a place in life, somewhere below his friend, who was the definite leader of the two. Later on, as Yun fails to publish his poems, they start a literary magazine, while Song becomes a political activist, chiefly against the Japanese Occupation. In 1942, when the Japanese pass a law forcing all lessons in Korea to be in the Japanese language, they move to Japan. They attend different universities, since Yun fails to pass the entrance exams for Tokyo University, and Song becomes one of the leaders of the Resistance. The film ends, and starts actually, with both of them imprisoned.

Kang Ha-neul and Chun Woo-hee are easily among my favourite young Korean actors whose projects are often looked forward to with keen anticipation. Thus, when “Endless Rain” was announced, a project that would bring both of them together and that too in a romance (a genre that both don’t often dabble in), it shot itself high among my most anticipated films this year. Now, we finally have a first trailer for it.
Synopsis
A love story between a man and a woman who have yearned for each other for a long time but could not meet due to certain circumstances.
In addition to the two, “Endless Rain” also stars Kang So-ra (“Sunny”) and Woo Jung-won, who was also seen in the Kang Ha-neul starring K-Drama “When the Camellia Blooms”. It is expected to release in South Korea on April 28th, 2021.
