Gary Cooper movies on TCM: Cooper at his best and at his weakest Gary Cooper is Turner Classic Movies' “Summer Under the Stars” star today, Aug. 30, '15. Unfortunately, TCM isn't showing any Cooper movie premiere – despite the fact that most of his Paramount movies of the '20s and '30s remain unavailable. This evening's features are Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Sergeant York (1941), and Love in the Afternoon (1957). Mr. Deeds Goes to Town solidified Gary Cooper's stardom and helped to make Jean Arthur Columbia's top female star. The film is a tad overlong and, like every Frank Capra movie, it's also highly sentimental. What saves it from the Hell of Good Intentions is the acting of the two leads – Cooper and Arthur are both excellent – and of several supporting players. Directed by Howard Hawks, the jingoistic, pro-war Sergeant York was a huge box office hit, eventually earning Academy Award nominations in several categories,...

Jean Arthur films on TCM include three Frank Capra classics Five Jean Arthur films will be shown this evening, Monday, January 5, 2015, on Turner Classic Movies, including three directed by Frank Capra, the man who helped to turn Arthur into a major Hollywood star. They are the following: Capra's Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, You Can't Take It with You, and Mr. Smith Goes to Washington; George Stevens' The More the Merrier; and Frank Borzage's History Is Made at Night. One the most effective performers of the studio era, Jean Arthur -- whose film career began inauspiciously in 1923 -- was Columbia Pictures' biggest female star from the mid-'30s to the mid-'40s, when Rita Hayworth came to prominence and, coincidentally, Arthur's Columbia contract expired. Today, she's best known for her trio of films directed by Frank Capra, Columbia's top director of the 1930s. Jean Arthur-Frank Capra...

The Fray have said that they are "proud" of their new album. The band released their third studio record Scars & Stories in the UK on Monday (March 5) and played a gig as part of an Absolute Radio Session held at the Hard Rock Cafe in London to celebrate. Speaking to the station about whether their latest single 'Heartbeat' is a proud moment on the album, Joe King replied: "No, it's different for all of us. I mean, we're all attached to various songs for different reasons, but I'm proud of it. "I think it's one of those records where you can listen to the whole thing and it's not just about the one single." Following their show at the Hard Rock Cafe, frontman Isaac Slade leapt off stage for an impromptu acoustic solo performance on the edge of the venue's (more)...

The Fray's new song "Heartbeat" seems to be about reviving a broken relationship, with lyrics like "I wanna kiss your scars tonight, and baby, you gotta try, you gotta let me in."
But the inspiration for the rock tune has little to do with a failed romance. Instead, it comes from one of the worst tragedies in recent memory – the genocide in Rwanda nearly two decades ago.
Lead singer and writer Isaac Slade was visiting the Rwandan capital of Kigali last year when he found himself standing on the site where more than 250,000 victims of the country's 1994 genocide were buried. Then he had an epiphany.
"(I was) at this gathering with a bunch of local (people) and ex-pats, all standing in circle holding hands, just kind of thinking and talking about Rwanda. This chick was standing next to me and I couldn't tell if it was her heartbeat or mine,...

The Fray has a lot to talk about these days. They just released their third album, Scars and Stories (featuring first single “Heartbeat”) and have a 10th anniversary to celebrate this year. The milestones haven’t come without a few scars themselves. We caught up with lead Singer/pianist Isaac Slade, and guitarist Joe King recently to talk about their new album, what they’ve learned along the way, and of course, with February the month of “love”, find out what the guys really love these days (P.S. For all you ladies who have a special fondness for Joe? He needs a Valentine Stat! Surprised? We were! So keep reading!)

The shortlist for Britain's National Television Awards is out, and it will pit Downton Abbey against Doctor Who for the top prize, though Downton inexplicably received no nominations for the cast. They face off against Merlin and Waterloo Road. Interestingly, John Barrowman and Eve Myles both got nominations for what to me at least was a very forgettable Torchwood.

Professional pyromaniacs (fine, engineers) employed by the insurance industry are finding increasingly sophisticated ways to recreate horrific natural disasters--and their research is helping companies avoid millions in losses.
As wildfires rage through Texas and the U.S. braces for hailstorm season, engineer Tim Reinhold and his team at the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety are intentionally burning down houses and preparing to pelt others with golfball-size hail.
It's the latest disaster simulation inside the Ibhs's massive new laboratory in Richburg, S.C., a $40 million research center set on 90 acres that opened in October. It features a giant test chamber as tall as a six-story building that can hold up to nine 2,300-square-foot homes on a turntable. Researchers can blast the homes with tornado-strength winds generated by 105 giant fans. Drop in a half-million gallons of water or ice from the ceiling, and they can simulate hurricanes and hailstorms.

Stephen King's son has announced that he also writes horror novels. Joe Hill, whose real name is Joseph King, has revealed that he kept his parentage a secret in order to be taken seriously as a writer while trying to sell his work for ten years, Perez Hilton reports. Hill has admitted that he first began publishing more "mainstream fiction" and then switched to his father's genre under a pseudonym to achieve accolades on his own. (more)...

When I first heard of Joe Hill, some five years ago, my first thought was of the dedication page in one of my favorite novels, Stephen King’s The Shining: This is for Joe Hill King, who shines on. My second thought: Nah. Probably not him.
“Pop Art,” a heart-breaking slice of magical realism about a balloon boy, was being discussed in reverential tones among those who had read it, and his short-fiction collection, 20th Century Ghosts, was, some said, a revelation. Despite the accolades, I wasn’t in a mad rush to read Hill’s writing. In small press Horror circles, high praise sometimes comes a little easier than it should, and is not always to be trusted.
“Have you read Joe Hill?” asked a friend of mine, sounding a little like a Sutter Kane convert from John Carpenter’s In the Mouth of Madness.

Kris Allen is an "American Idol" of many firsts. He's the first married "Idol" winner. He's the first "short" dude (his words) who's taken home the grand prize. He's the first champ to leave the dreaded coronation song off his album. But he's the second "Idol" winner to have a sole writing credit on a track from his debut post-"Idol" CD.
Following in David Cook's footsteps, Kris included his self-penned "Red Guitar" on the album, and the track is already a legend among his fans. The autobiographical ditty was written for his wife long before he became a breakout star on the TV juggernaut. And for Kris, convincing his record label to let him write on...

With Allen's album due Tuesday, the long journey from surprise winner to young man on the cusp of superstardom is just beginning. Though, in typical Allen fashion, the buildup to his musical debut has been much more subtle than the fireworks and silver lip-gloss barrage of news and images from runner-up Adam Lambert.
In fact, until the leak of Allen's album last month, the premature release of snippets of his songs two weeks ago and the recent debut of his big budget-looking first video, news about...

Being a diehard "American Idol" fan is an emotional roller-coaster. No matter how much you dig a performer on the show, by the time his or her album leaks your fandom has been deflated by less-than-awesome singles and frustrations with how they're being marketed. "Idol" albums are often over-written, over-produced and over-calculated, making the artist feel like studio-bots with little personality. "I'll like the songs on tour, without all the studio crap around it," you say to yourself, trying to save face when deep down you know your favorite new singer laid an egg.
Well, fans of our current "American Idol" can breathe a giant sigh of relief, because AOL premiered Kris Allen's self-titled major label debut this morning and it’s pretty damn good.
I jotted down some notes while listening to the CD for the first time. And MTV News would like me to share them with you.

In some ways, there's no experience less satisfying than listening to song-snippet leaks from albums you've been anticipating for mini-eternities. (What? After an hour of smelling a chocolate cake baking in an oven, you'd be happy with a crumb?) But as someone who happened to be in a three-day corporate meeting last week when Italian Amazon leaked 30-second samples of the 13 songs from Kris Allen's self-titled debut, I can attest that, in fact, I'd rather have had an all-too-brief musical tease than absolutely no music at all. And while our Music Mix blog has already run an item on...

'American Idol' winner debuts three new songs at Miami Dolphins tailgate concert

Just a few days after "American Idol" winner Kris Allen tweeted that he finished his self-titled major-label debut (and misses Nickelodeon's "Doug," by the way), the full track listing for the November 17 album has been revealed.
While the debut had many musical cooks, according to the track listing obtained by Entertainment Weekly, it appears that songs co-written by fellow "Idol" alum Chris Daughtry, as well as those with singer/songwriter Mat Kearney, did not make the cut.

Kearney had previously told MTV News that the tune he was working on with Allen would rough up the squeaky-clean Conway, Arkansas, native's image. "It's driving ... it has some edge to it," Kearney said earlier this month.

A cover version of The Script's 2008 song of the same name, "Live Like We're Dying" is confirmed to be the first single from Kris' not-yet-titled debut album. The song didn't make it to The Script's debut album "The Script" but appeared in a b-side of their mini album "We Cry".

He is also said to work with The Fray's guitarist Joe King and acclaimed producers Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Leona Lewis, Akon).

Another musician being involved in the making of Kris Allen's debut album is revealed. Breaking the news to public is the champion of "American Idol" season 8 himself who wrote on his Twitter about hitting studio with The Calling's vocalist, Alex Band.
In reply to Kris' tweet, Alex posted a short message on his own page, "Writing session with @KrisAllen4Real Is going great, lots of coffee being drank, getting two killer songs together." Prior to that post, the vocalist admitted he hadn't met Kris just yet. Though so, he was sure that "It'll be great to work with him!"

Recent rumor which emerged over the weekend suggesting that Kris Allen will release his debut album across United States on November 17 is proven true. Confirming the matter is the winner of "American Idol" season 8 himself on his Twitter.
"Hey guys! The album is set to release Nov 17th," Kris wrote on the social network. Though already unveiling the official release date for this effort, the singer who is currently on tour for Top 10 Idol summer roadshow didn't spill the beans on the record's working title.
Also, not much is known about who will be working with Kris for the album. Various reports in the media claim he teams up with The Fray's guitarist Joe King and also gets helping hands from acclaimed producers Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Leona Lewis, Akon).

We already know a whole lot about who's working on it, what it might sound like and what Adam Lambert thinks about it. And now, we might actually have a release date for it too.
We're talking about "American Idol" champ Kris Allen's debut album. And, according to one rather gigantic online retailer, it's coming out November 17.
On Monday, Amazon.com began taking pre-orders for Allen's debut disc (under the working title New Release 2009) and lists the release date as November 17. Lambert's post-"Idol" debut also has a similar page on the site, though that album is not available for pre-order and does not have an accompanying release date.
So should Allen fans be gearing up for a November release?...

Kris Allen's first studio album will be brought out for purchase across United States on November 17, according to Amazon. Though the tentative release date for this effort has been unveiled, its working title still hasn't been disclosed.
Kris teams up with The Fray's guitarist Joe King in working on the not-yet-titled album. Back in June, the winner of "American Idol" season 8 hit Timbaland's studio with the guitarist. "It was a very good vibe in the studio," Joe said of the recording process. "There was no pressure - we just had breakfast, got to know each other. It was all very organic after that."
Aside from hitting the studio with Joe, Kris also gets helping hands from acclaimed producers Salaam Remi (Nas, Amy Winehouse) and Claude Kelly (Leona Lewis, Akon). Kris will drop the record under 19 Recordings/Jive Records.

Every "American Idol" champ's debut disc is a make-or-break affair. For every David Cook, there's a Taylor Hicks. The stakes are high, and the odds of success are slim, which is why, for his post-"Idol" debut, season-eight champ Kris Allen is hoping to increase his chances by getting a little help from his friend Adam Lambert.
"Adam will get a song, and he'll be like, 'Listen to this,' and I'll tell him what I think about it, whether I like it or not. And we were actually doing that last night. ... He was listening to some things of mine," Allen told MTV News. "He had some good things to say,...

Kris Allen has crossed out his 2009 "American Idol" winning song "No Boundaries" from set list of the on-going Idol tour. "We were talking to the tour director and stuff, and it kinda just didn't work with the set," he explained the removal to MTV.
In replacement of the Kara DioGuardi-penned single, Kris brings The Killers' 2004 track "All These Things That I've Done" to the Idol tour stage. He sang it for the first time during a stop in Sacramento, California on July 10.
Kris will next be seen making live performances with the nine other former contestants of Idol in Dallas, Tampa, Greensboro, Baltimore, Long Island and many other U.S. cities. Beside having The Killers' song on his set list, Kris also has Bill Withers' "Ain't No Sunshine", Kanye West's "Heartless" and The Beatles' "Hey Jude".

Los Angeles — Turns out there is a boundary for "American Idol" winner Kris Allen after all.
Less than two months after releasing victory single "No Boundaries," (and defending it at the "Idol" finale), Kris Allen has already dropped the song from his American Idols Live! tour set list and replaced it with the Killers' "All These Things That I've Done."
But the amiable acoustic rocker insists the switch has nothing to do with his feelings on the song — which remain positive — but rather chalks it up to musical flow.

'For the third record, it's exciting to think about different elements and completely different sides of the Fray,' Joe King says.

The Fray

They've already conquered the coveted "Grey's Anatomy" demographic with their breakthrough 2005 album How to Save a Life, and proved they rule radio with the success of singles like "You Found Me" and "Never Say Never" off their chart-topping follow-up, but the Fray are now so huge that their audience also includes the likes of Kanye West and indie hipsters.
The former happened almost by accident. Back in February, they covered West's "Heartless" for Jo Whiley's BBC Radio show, and the track became an Internet sensation — surging through YouTube, popping up on Kanye's blog and even landing on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart — all unbeknownst to the guys themselves.
"It's crazy. We didn't intend it to do what it's doing.

Yesterday I talked to Joe King, the guitarist and songwriter from the Fray, about his collaboration with “American Idol” winner Kris Allen. One of the best moments of the interview was when we discussed his acoustic cover of Kanye West’s “Heartless,” which became something of a viral hit after the band performed it on a British radio show. “It was for a show on BBC Radio called ‘The Jo Whiley Show,’ where you play one of your own songs and then a cover of a current pop hit. Kanye’s was on the list, and we thought it would be cool to break it down,” explains King. “Two days later it went all over the place, and our manager was like, ‘You guys are on every hip-hop blog,’ which is not the normal world for the Fray.”
King was relieved that Kanye West put it up on his own blog.

While his fellow "American Idol" alum Adam Lambert gets helping hands from RedOne for his post-Idol album, Kris Allen has The Fray's guitarist Joe King on his team for his debut effort. "I'm literally in the studio mixing the rough demo right now," Joe told MTV during a phone interview. "It doesn't have a title yet. It doesn't even have lyrics - but there is a lot of gibberish."
Explaining further about how the recording process is going on so far, Joe said, "It was a very good vibe in the studio." He added, "There was no pressure - we just had breakfast, got to know each other. It was all very organic after that."
Kris and Joe craft the new song in Timbaland's studio. Unfortunately, the powerhouse producer is not present during the session. "But Timbaland's brother was there along with his crew, and it added this great energy to the session.

The Fray are probably best known for their 2006 smash single, "How to Save a Life," but the guys are setting out to prove they aren't one-hit wonders.
Their self-titled sophomore album was released back in February and went straight to the top of the Billboard albums chart. Critics may have bashed the band for playing it safe with their second LP, but the boys purposely decided not to stray too far from the sound that made them famous.
''We had to consciously decide that we couldn't take a huge left turn on the second record, because it's almost too soon for our fans," guitarist Joe King told The Associated Press.
The band kicked off a tour in Montreal last month and is set to return home to the U.
