Sunday Am: Even better than expected results for Legendary/Warner Bros’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire with a second weekend of $31.7M (-60%) after a second Saturday of $13.8M, +62% over Friday. The twosome are beating their chests to ten-day $135M total.
In second, Universal’s Monkey Man kept steady toward a $10.1M opening, after a $3.58M Saturday, -15% from Friday/previews. If ya think about it, even though this much grittier than any Bollywood film as we know it, it’s on the high-end of where movies for Indians audiences typically open. As a point of reference, Animal, which was a big bloody Hindi action movie last year opened to $6.5M. Typically the audiences for Bollywood movies come out in the first weekend and then fall apart in weekend 2. It will be interesting to see if Monkey Man has any legs off its B+ CinemaScore.

No dart gun, or First Omen, or Monkey Man will put Legendary/Warner Bros’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire to sleep this weekend. The pic, after an unexpected $80 million Easter weekend start, will continue to rumble with a 55%-60% second-weekend drop to between $32M-$36M. Through four days, the Adam Wingard-directed Monsterverse title stands at $87.7M, fueled by 57% of K-12 schools out Monday and another 14% colleges. Expect more cash today as, per Comscore, there are 28% of K-12 school out, and 5% universities.
Currently, both First Omen and Monkey Man are expected to come in around the same level — $12M to low teens. 20th Century Studios’ First Omen, despite being an R-rated horror movie, skews a little bit more female, while Universal/Monkeypaw’s Dev Patel feature directorial debut is more men.

It’s family first in The Baxters, Prime Video’s faith-driven drama based on the bestselling books from Karen Kingsbury. The first 10 episodes follow the determined Kari (Ali Cobrin), who tries to save her marriage after learning that her professor husband Tim (Black Lightning’s Brandon Hirsch) has been cheating on her with a student. In Kari’s corner are her loving parents—Elizabeth and John (Roma Downey and Ted McGinley)—and four siblings. Of course, Kari’s compassionate mom is her first call after her life falls apart. Downey was down for the drama, but the Baxters’ relatability drew in the Touched by an Angel vet. “Here is a series about a quintessential American churchgoing family dealing with real challenges and figuring out a way to come out stronger on the other side,” Downey, also an executive producer, says. “I know audiences will see themselves in this story.” Below,...

Exciting news for fans of The Diplomat!
The popular Netflix series starring Keri Russell as the US ambassador to the UK just announced that it's adding a major talent for its second season.
Producers revealed today that Alison Janney will be joining the cast in the role of Vice President Grace Penn.
Janney is no stranger to political drama, having starred in all seven seasons of NBC's The West Wing.
In more recent years, she starred on the CBS sitcom Mom and scored an Oscar nomination for her performance in I, Tonya.
The news that Netflix is willing to shell out to stack the Diplomat's roster shouldn't come as much of a surprise.
The streaming giant has been thirsting for a new prestige hit in the style of The Crown, and with its instant success among critics and audiences, The Diplomat might be the politically charged drama they've been waiting for.

Upcoming movie The Whole Banana may feature elements of ancient Greek mythology but, as the whimsical title suggests, it's far removed from any of the other recent productions that have clashed their immortal titans on the big screen.
Instead of a gritty action film with furious gods and fire-spewing fiends locked in deadly battle, you will find a heartwarming tale of charm and humour that promises to show us what it means to be human.
Filming is under way in Los Angeles on the romantic comedy, whose all-star cast of movie and TV favourites includes Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) and Kristy Swanson (Buffy), with large cameo roles from Matthew Perry (Friends) and Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman). We previously reported that Resident Evil actress Sienna Guillory and the Farley brothers had also signed on to the production.

Somehow it's fitting that two of last year's most dangerous films will be hitting DVD shelves the same week, both being favorites of the IFC.com staff. "Dogtooth," Lanthimos' much-debated Un Certain Regard winner from Cannes, concerns the lives of three culturally isolated children -- two daughters and a son, who range from mid-teens to early 20s -- fenced in by their parents' country home, who receive a reeducation when their lone connection to the outside world, a female security guard for their parents' business, introduces them to the joys of sex and Sylvester Stallone films. Meanwhile, "Irreversible" provocateur Noé's latest is a wildly ambitious 155-minute extravaganza set inside the mind of a drug dealer told from the first-person perspective. Nathaniel Brown and "Boardwalk Empire" star Paz de la Huerta...

Rarely does a drama come along with so much emotionally raw resonance that moviegoers feel each and every cinematic pang as if the on-screen tragedy were actually happening to them.Based on the novel of the same title by Karen Kingsbury, "Like Dandelion Dust" is a painfully emotional roller-coaster ride through a parent's worst nightmare. Not afraid to tackle a tricky topic, the movie breaks viewers' hearts with a generally impossible dilemma then inspires them with a demonstration of faith's unending power.Mira Sorvino stars as Wendy Porter, a woman whose husband Rip ...

Like Dandelion Dust is a film based on a Karen Kingsbury novel. It is a harrowing tale about an adoptive couple's worst nightmare. This occurs when the birth parents try to take back their child from the couple who is raising him. This movie explores that situation in depth and the drama is highlighted by superb performances by Barry Pepper and Mira Sorvino. Jack and Molly Campbell (Cole Hauser and Kate Levering) have had their adopted son Joey (Maxwell Perry Cotton) since he was a tiny infant. He is now seven years old and is a happy, well adjusted child. His birth mother Wendy (Sorvino) is married to Rip Porter (Pepper) who has been in jail for seven years, and is now being released. Rip had not known Wendy was pregnant and that she had a child. When he finds out, he...

I know almost no thing about author Karen Kingsbury, but apparently she's a New York Times bestselling author with a huge following. But I have seen a film which releases tomorrow that is based on one of her books and it's a film you don't want to miss. Produced by Bobby Downes whose previous credits included the gritty Eric Roberts film Mercy Streets, Like Dandelion Dust stars Mira Sorvino in a powerful role that centers on a custody battle that is fought over a little boy. It's a powerful and moving film that you don't want to miss. ...

- This past weekend I had the chance to attend one of the more beautiful settings for a film fest. The Sonoma Film Festival offers such a splendid backdrop that makes it difficult to trade it, and the tasty food and delicious wines donated by local restaurants and wineries in for, a darkened environment to watch a slate of films. With exceptions such as the Korean film "Story of Wine" which almost feels tailor made for the festival, the festival's film selections feels catered towards a local, discerning audience who probably take their movies as seriously as they do about making wine. The friendly and patient audience had a chance to indulge in a selection of local shorts, international features and the highlight of the 12th festival edition was a tribute to Hollywood legend Bruce Willis would have preferred to be honoured as a great "Line Memorizer" rather than accepting
