Even after years since the last season aired, Avatar: The Last Airbender is considered one of the best-animated series to date. Created by Michael Dante Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, the series premiered on Nickelodeon in February 2005 and was aired for three seasons until July 2008.

While numerous fascinating elements are used in the show, one of the most prominent is the different martial arts styles the creators chose to use. The creators once revealed how a former celebrity bodyguard helped determine all four martial arts that they incorporated into the show.

Putting it mildly, "Avatar: The Last Airbender" pulls a lot from Southeast Asian mythology and history. The show can't completely escape Orientalism but at least the writers did their research.
A savior named the Avatar with a reincarnation cycle? That's adapted (and heavily simplified) from Hindu myths about gods incarnating on Earth. The Fire Nation resembles 20th-century Imperial Japan: an island-chain nation undergoing its industrial revolution and colonizing its neighbors. Then there are the details of the setting, like architecture, outfits, and the in-universe writing system, which are all inspired by real-world Asian cultures. Even the show's animation is purposefully meant to resemble anime that co-creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante Dimartino loved, like Hayao Miyazaki movies and "Cowboy Bebop."
"Avatar: The Last Airbender" is a fantasy show and the magic system also pulls from Eastern concepts. In the show, spiritually-attuned people can control, or bend, one of the four classical elements: Water,...

Well, Netflix seems really into the idea of making live-action remakes. Turning an animated show into a live-action while capturing its essence is tough. And Avatar: The Last Airbender‘s attempt at this didn’t go as expected.
First coming out in 2005, the Nickelodeon series, Avatar: The Last Airbender is highly regarded as one of the best TV shows ever and currently ranks #7 on IMDb’s Top 250 TV Shows list.

In 2010, respected director M. Night Shyamalan made a live-action movie based on the series, which wasn’t well-received. Recently, Netflix also attempted to make a live-action version.
Now, some are comparing the live-action with the Indian-American filmmaker’s 2010 flick. But fans of the Netflix adaptation are defending the show against criticism.

The head of Nickelodeon Animation, Roland Poindexter, if that really is his name, welcomed Comic-Con with a somewhat awkward "Goooooooood afternoon!" The way-past-capacity crowd gave a reserved shout back, perhaps due to the (maybe) underestimated line outside. But once he mentioned the phrase "Avatar: The Last Airbender" the place went nuts
The eager fans were here to learn anything, anything about the forthcoming Avatar: The Legend of Korra series.
Before show creators Michael Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko came to the stage, a woman dressed as Korra stepped out to thunderous applause. She is very much a woman of color, thank you very much M. Night Shyamalan.
All that bitterness evaporated once they said they were about to debut the trailer.
The Trailer
"Don't worry, we'll show it again at the end - we know there'll be a lot of screaming and stuff and you might miss something," Bryan added.

Of all places for a world reveal, The Wall Street Journal has obtained our first real look at Korra, the protagonist for Avatar: The Last Airbender's sequel mini-series aptly titled, Avatar: The Legend of Korra.
As previously reported, Korra takes place some 70-odd years after the conclusion of the Aang gang's adventures in overthrowing Fire Lord Ozai, as Korra, a hot-headed rebel from the Southern Water Tribe works with Aang and Katara's son Tenzin to master the art of Airbending against a city-wide anti-bending revolt.
The WSJ also released the voice cast for the 12-part miniseries, which carries some impressive clout of its own, including Lost's Daniel Dae Kim as "Hiroshi Sato," Millenium's Lance Henriksen as "Lieutenant," Mad Men's Kiernan Shipka as "Jinora," Married with Children's David Faustino as "Mako," a character presumably named for the late voice actor behind the original series' Uncle Iroh, the...
