“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” and “Promising Young Woman” were named the best adapted original screenplays of 2021 at the Writers Guild Awards, which took place in a virtual ceremony on Sunday.
While “Promising Young Woman” went into the show with a slight edge over “The Trial of the Chicago 7’ for the original-screenplay award,”Borat” was a decided dark horse in the adapted-screenplay category, whose nominees also included “One Night in Miami,” “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom,” “News of the World’ and “The White Tiger.”
Writers Guild winners in the screenplay categories go on to win Oscars almost two-thirds of the time, although the two awards sometimes differ because the WGA is an award strictly for screenplays for movies that were made under the terms of the guild’s Minimum Basic Agreement, or similar agreements from a number of international guilds.

Before the Indie Spirits, before the Oscars, there are the guilds, and as Hollywood inches its way through a protracted awards season, it’s up to each voting body to dole out their own accolades. On Sunday night, it was time for the writers to shine, as the Writers Guild of America presented their awards for film, television, news, and more, all voted on by fellow writers. For writers, by writers!
As IndieWire’s own Anne Thompson has noted, the WGA’s film nominees are less predictive than an indication of what’s losing and gaining heat, from the missing early 2020 releases “I’m Thinking of Ending Things,” “The King of Staten Island,” and “Da 5 Bloods,” to such surging movies as “Judas and the Black Messiah,” “Sound of Metal,” and “Promising Young Woman,” all of which recently earned Best Picture nods from the Academy.

The Writers Guild of America Awards were handed during a virtual ceremony on Sunday, March 21. But don’t base your Oscar predictions on these kudos. Every year a slew of Oscar-nominated scripts are deemed ineligible for consideration here due to guild guidelines. Indeed, over the past 12 years only 80 of the Writers Guild of America Awards nominees have numbered among the 120 screenplays that reaped Academy Awards bids. Scroll down for the 2021 Writers Guild of America Awards winners list.
Our odds predict that “Nomadland” will win Best Adapted Screenplay winner at the Oscars but it was not allowed to compete at the WGA Awards. Neither was another Oscar contender in that category: “The Father.” The guild did match the academy three-for-five in this category, with “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” “One Night in Miami” and “The White Tiger” competing at both. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “News of the World” round out the guild nominees.

Law & Order: Svu Vet Mariska Hargitay Pilots an American Dream
NBC is looking to exploring what goes on behind the scenes of a reality based television series as told by a new series from Law & Order: Svu star Mariska Hargitay. Hargitay is executive producing an hour-long spec called American Dream, which was recently bought by NBC and written by Paul Kolsby (producer of Jersey Shore). Should the script make it to the pilot phase, Steve Shainberg (Secretary) is attached to direct. The project owes a lot of thanks to Hargitay who has able to bring the script to NBC thanks to her producing deal with the network.
According to Deadline, American Dream will be a “funny, risqué and sophisticated melodrama about the symbiotic relationship between network executives and the ‘talent’ in a reality television series.” Without a doubt this potential series sounds like something worth giving attention to. Kolsby, a playwright and screenwriter, had a lot of personal experience to draw on in writing the American Dream — he has worked as a producer on a number of reality series, including Jersey Shore and Bridezillas. Kolsby developed the project with Shainberg and Lazar.

- I consider myself enough of a fan of helmer David Mackenzie to put Spread at the top tier of films I wanted to cover at Sundance back in January. I can't say I was totally seduced on Mackenzie's intro into comedy, but I was impressed that the film had a little bit of balls.....tits, ass and plenty of nudity. Actually the intro is pretty sharp, Ashton Kutcher narrates from the backdrop of a clubbing scene (an impressive three level long take) that inserts the viewer into the character's lifestyle. My after-thought was, what kind of a life will this have in theaters, if any at all? The pic was surprisingly picked up despite the obvious issues at hand. Clearly by the looks of their trailer (bottom version) Anchor Bay aren't going the full monthy and representing the film as it is. Unlike the French who play up the flesh and gigolo angle,

- The Sundance Film Festival have done a great job at fine-tuning the total number of final entries but realistically speaking there are just so many films one can pack in eight days? My magic number falls somewhere between 24 and 35 and with my "Sundance Select" series, I'll be previewing the films that have the best chances at making it into my coverage. I'm guilty of not having seen David MacKenzie's last picture Hallam Foe (or Mister Foe depending on which side of the Atlantic you reside in) and I'm also guilty of not caring much for Ashton Kutcher filmography but this down and out in L.A tale which sounds like the story of at least one percent of residents in this packed city (I think this is where the occupation known as pool boy came about) has got me curious. There is also the factor that MacKenzie's 2003 drama

Ashton Kutcher to star in Lionsgate's "Five Killers" which Robert Luketic will direct. Kutcher apparently plays a former hit man whose life is thrown into turmoil when a person from his past hires a group of assassins to do him in. The action comedy that will begin production early next year. The spec script was by Bob DeRosa which Ted Griffin is rewriting. Scott Aversano will produce with Jason Goldberg and Kutcher of Katalyst Productions. Kutcher was last seen in the romantic comedy "What Happens in Vegas" alongside Cameron Diaz. He's in post-production phase for two projects: 1. "Personal Effects" starring with Michelle Pfeifer and Kathy Bates. The drama is helmed by David Hollander (TV's "The Guardian")2. "Spread" with Anne Heche and Sonia Rockwell. A sex comedy written by Paul Kolsby and Jason Dean Hall.
