"Halloween Kills" might be one of the weaker installments in the long-running "Halloween" franchise, but one of its stars is anything but. The new book "Halloween: The Official Making of Halloween, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends" includes a whole bunch of great behind-the-scenes stories about the new trilogy's production, including one about "Halloween Kills" actor Kyle Richards. Richards, a former child actress who is perhaps now best known as a castmate on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," played Michael Myers survivor Lindsey in the recent David Gordon Green movie (a role she originated in the 1978 classic), and apparently went above and beyond when it came to the film's stunt scenes.
In one scene, according to Abbie Bernstein's book, Richards was tasked with smacking the seemingly invincible killer known as The Shape with a sack of foam meant to be a stand-in for a bag of bricks. The foam...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we revisit the high water mark for one-location thrillers: the central siege in John Carpenter's 1976 classic "Assault on Precinct 13.")
There's a hypothetical version of "Assault on Precinct 13" out there that does away with the restraint and foreboding atmosphere of the original, recklessly tossed out in favor of high-wire thrills and a never-ending collection of narrative tropes. In place of a handful of straightforward (yet effective) archetypes thrown together as strangers but who come out as something else altogether after the crucible of one endlessly violent night, someone might've had the inclination to try and "humanize" these characters by burdening them with edgy backstories or an overcomplicated plot. In essence, imagine stripping away all the idiosyncrasy and personality just to end up with another generic action/thriller.

This Scream 6 article contains spoilers.
There are certain rules that one must abide by in order to successfully make a Scream movie. For instance, number one: you must involve Sidney Prescott. No Sidney equals box office death, okay? Number two: you must always have two killers who are connected to Sidney or her mother Maureen Prescott. The sin factor! It’s a sin. It’s an extension of number one. And number three: never, ever, ever under any circumstances say, “I know who the killer is.” Because you won’t be right.
By this point, the rules that Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) lays out for slasher movies (using Halloween as a target text) can be applied to the Scream franchise itself. Six movies in, the series has established a vernacular so clear that, even after Wes Craven‘s passing, Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett can take over for Scream 2022...

Played by comedian Jamie Kennedy, film geek Randy Meeks in "Scream" and " Scream 2" is probably the most relatable character in the entire franchise. He's always the fifth wheel and probably spent more lonely nights at home watching horror movies than he'd care to admit. Perpetually single, Randy lived vicariously through the popular kids at Woodsboro High. He watched Sidney and Billy take their PG-13 relationship into R-rated territory (big mistake!), and stood idly by as Stu and Tatum bickered and flirted with each other. Randy was the class clown and the horror movie expert, so naturally, Tatum thinks he's actually Ghostface moments before her death (when it's actually Billy Loomis).
Like a lot of us, Randy learned about life through movies. Just as he watched the characters on screen behaving in predictable, formulaic ways, he also noticed how cliché and stereotypical the people in his own life were acting.

“I’m something different.” So says Ghostface to Gale Weathers in the new trailer for Scream VI, reinforcing the “New York. New rules.” tagline. And while that may be true, there’s certainly no shortage of references to the past. The trailer reveals Ghostface’s macabre shine featuring wardrobe and props from both past killers and their victims.
Here are all the Scream VI Easter Eggs we spotted in the new trailer…
Steve’s varsity jacket – Ghostface’s first victim in the original Scream is Casey’s boyfriend, Steve. His Woodsboro High School varsity jacket is on a mannequin along with the duct tape that was used to bound him and, it appears, the actual chair he was murdered in.
Stu’s robe – I know a lot of fans want to see Stu return, but all signs point to him being dead. The Hugh Hefner-esque red robe that he...

Earlier this month, a 4K restoration of director John Carpenter‘s 1976 action thriller classic Assault on Precinct 13 played at the Globe Cinema in Calgary for three days. Now the 4K restoration is set to reach more theatres across the U.S. and Canada, rolling out over the next two months! The American Genre Film Archive is responsible for this 4K theatrical re-release, and the company’s theatrical director Bret Berg had this to say about it: “It’s an honor to represent Carpenter’s legacy, given how much personal joy his work has created for us. When it’s something as iconic as Precinct 13 – akin to the heartstopping majesty of Halloween – we’re driven to get this taut masterwork in front of as many audiences as we can. Big thanks to the Ckk Corporation for shepherding this new restoration.”

Yesterday, January 16th, was the 75th birthday of legendary filmmaker John Carpenter, and a lot of fans made sure to watch some of Carpenter’s movies to celebrate. During the festivities, I also happened to stumble across video of an old interview with Carpenter, one that was conducted on the set of the 1978 classic Halloween (watch that Here) to be aired as an episode of Arena Cinema that was broadcast on BBC2 in early ’79. Coinciding with the British release of Halloween. This interview can be viewed in the embed at the bottom of this article.

To get the obvious out of the way: yes, if we're being completely honest, the original "Scream" is technically the best film in the franchise. It's got the tightest script, the best opening scene, and probably one of the best-executed killer reveals in the slasher genre. It has a plot that feels meticulously crafted, and it does a tremendous job of balancing the mix of comedic and horror elements that these movies are so famous for.
And yet at the same time, "Scream" feels a little cold, mostly through no fault of its own. There's only a small handful of characters the audience can sympathize with throughout the film, mainly Sidney (Neve Campbell), Drew Barrymore's Casey (who doesn't make it past the first scene), and Sidney's best friend Tatum (Rose McGowan). Nearly everyone else in the movie, however, is a potential murderer, which means the audience is basically forced...

John Carpenter's "The Thing" is a heady, psychological science-fiction thriller about a group of scientists who find themselves trapped at an arctic research base with a shapeshifting alien that is slowly consuming and impersonating every member of their crew. Carpenter's version is based on the 1938 novella written by John W. Campbell Jr. titled, "Who Goes There?," as well as the 1951 film adaptation, "The Thing from Another World." At the time of its release, "The Thing" was largely criticized for its dark tone which was in stark contrast to the other alien-centered film also making the rounds in theaters at the time: Steven Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." But even though audiences and critics weren't quite ready to be assimilated into the frigid atmosphere of Carpenter's film just yet, eventually "The Thing" found its fans, and it is now largely considered to be one of Carpenter's best creations.

In 1996, "Scream" introduced viewers to the rules of slasher flicks, and even if they knew them already, even if they sat on the couch throwing popcorn at the screen and cursing every bad decision in every horror movie ever made, "Scream" put into words what moviegoers had always known. Horror movies are where seemingly well-grounded and intelligent individuals make stupid choices that often result in bloody death.
The pattern of human error found in all horror films is as universal as it is legendary, and the massively successful and constantly reinvented "Halloween" franchise is no exception. Since Michael Myers killed his sister, Judith, his path of carnage has been aided by what can lovingly be called the "kerfuffles" of some of his victims. In this article, we will honor some of the worst decisions characters have ever made in the "Halloween" franchise. There will be hot takes! There will be rants!

Basically obligated to make another Halloween sequel but hoping to leave Michael Myers behind, producers John Carpenter and Debra Hill decided to try to turn the franchise into an anthology series, where each film would tell a different story set on Halloween. Nigel Kneale was hired to write the initial script for what became Halloween III: Season of the Witch (watch it Here), and Carpenter and Hill’s pal Tommy Lee Wallace was hired to direct the film. After watching his movie get rejected by viewers when it was released in 1982 and then gain cult classic status over the decades, Wallace has taken it upon himself to write a tell-all book about the production of his Halloween sequel. The book is titled Halloween 3: Where the Hell is Michael Myers? – The Definitive History of Horror’s Most Misunderstood Film, and is going to be available from Bear Manor Media this November.

Jamie Lee Curtis Wanted The Father Of Laurie Strode's Daughter To Be Someone Else In Halloween Kills
The final chapter of David Gordon Green's "Halloween" sequel trilogy is finally available, and if we could convert thoughts, opinions, and "takes" on the film swirling around online film communities into energy, we'd never have to rely on fossil fuels ever again. Dgg's "Halloween" trilogy saw the return of Jamie Lee Curtis as the ultimate final girl, Laurie Strode, four decades after her first showdown with The Shape in 1978. Laurie Strode was the quintessential girl next door, pining after a boy named Ben Tramer (who unfortunately gets 'sploded in "Halloween II") while her friends Annie (Nancy Kyes) and Lynda (P.J. Soles) happily enjoyed their doofus boyfriends. When we return to Laurie in 2018, she's single and living on her own in a paranoid survivalist compound away from most of Haddonfield, but has a grown daughter named Karen (Judy Greer) and a granddaughter named Allyson (Andi Matichak).

“You can’t kill the bogeyman!” little Tommy Doyle says to babysitter Laurie Strode at the climax of John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978). A couple years later—and some $80 million dollars later—the man who started it all, movie mogul and producer Irwin Yablans, agreed and launched Halloween II on Friday, October 30th, 1981. Let’s begin with a simple truth: sequels are to movie fans as drugs are to drug addicts: fans are chasing that first high knowing, over time, that it’s nearly impossible a sequel will ever outdo or even match the first. But we keep trying, don’t we? Now, Halloween II is not as good as its predecessor, but it is a damn fine sequel that finishes telling the story of Laurie Strode and Michael Myers on Halloween night. But let’s not forget Halloween H20 in 1998. Oh, and then there were those Zombie ones. And, of course,...

Kyle Richards, an actress and star of the reality show “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills,” is joining the cast of “Halloween Kills,” the horror sequel from Universal and Blumhouse.
Richards appeared in the original 1978 “Halloween” directed by John Carpenter when she was just 9 years old, and in a nod to the original film, Richards will reprise her role as Lindsey, who we first met as a young girl being babysat by the character Annie Brackett (Nancy Kyes).
She joins a cast that already includes Jamie Lee Curtis returning after appearing in the rebooted sequel from last year, as well as Anthony Michael Hall as Tommy Doyle. While Hall is new to the franchise, his character Doyle was a boy in the original “Halloween” as well, and even returned in one of the sequels, as played by Paul Rudd in the sequel.

You may not know it, but there’s a lot more to the forty-year career of Jamie Lee Curtis than her role in the Halloween series. Still, given the impact that the original 1978 horror pic had on the genre and the continuing popularity of the franchise, it’s likely that the actress’ big screen debut as scream queen Laurie Strode will always be the most celebrated and fondly remembered moment in her accomplished career.
We don’t imagine Curtis is too bugged by this legacy, either, given that she’s about to reprise the role of Strode for the fifth time in the upcoming Halloween from director David Gordon Green. True, Laurie was murdered at the start of 2002’s Resurrection, but this new sequel looks to be ignoring everything that’s happened in the series since the first installment, meaning that the franchise’s favorite heroine is alive and back...

It starts with the music, which rises as the screen fades from black to reveal the sinister orange glow of the credits and a leering jack o’ lantern. The rapid, staccato piano notes indicating an oppressive force at work; relentless and unforgiving. John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) is about all of these sensations and more; concrete vibrations that have echoed through the halls of horror, resounding from time to time to remind audiences of its lasting influence and potency.
By now, most know the story of how Halloween came to be and the landmark it truly is. How producer Irwin Yablans approached Carpenter about doing a horror film after seeing his Assault on Precinct 13 (1976), and wanted it to revolve around babysitters; how the film was initially panned by major critics, and then re-evaluated once it started to become popular; how it ended up making over $70 million worldwide at the box office against a $325,000 budget,...

I class myself as a John Carpenter fan, but the fact that I’d not seen Assault on Precinct 13 bugged me. Now thankfully with the Second Sight release of Assault on Precinct 13: 40th Anniversary Limited Edition on Blu-ray, I finally got to fix that.
When police sergeant Ethan Bishop (Austin) is given the job of holding the fort at a closing La precinct office on New Year’s Eve he hopes the night will go smoothly. When a man turns up in shock, chased by a group of gang members though, it seems things will hardly go smoothly.
The premise for Assault on Precinct 13 isn’t a unique one, in fact director John Carpenter even mentions...

So the big question everyone has been wondering since the announcement of the next Halloween film was whether or not it would continue on in the universe set up by Rob Zombie. Recently Collider caught up with Malek Akkad at the Saturn Awards, who shed some light on the subject.
“I can’t talk about it too much right now," says Akkad. "It will definitely keep elements and bring in new elements. But I really want to bring it back to kind of like, the classic – because the last one got a little dark – I want to bring it back to the classic Friday night horror film that people will really like.”
When asked about the ill-fated Halloween 3D, which was announced a couple of years back...
"Todd Farmer and Patrick Lussier did a script. The next day after the last one came out, we were back in production for Halloween 3D.

A simple story of a street gang terrorizing a soon-to-be abandoned police station while the inhabitants within fight for their lives, Assault on Precinct 13 is surprisingly touching and a great example of Carpenter’s economy as a filmmaker, as the film is lean and packs quite a punch. While the plot sounds flimsy, it’s Carpenter’s care for his characters, creating real people we care about, in extraordinary circumstances that make it work on so many levels rather than becoming a mindless action film.
Officer Bishop (Austin Stoker) has been assigned to watch the titular precinct for the evening until it can be officially closed down and emptied out the next day. Assault on Precinct 13
Written and directed by John Carpenter
USA, 1976
With his filmmaking career beginning in the midst of the new Hollywood and its touchstones in American film history, it’s perhaps easy to see why the work of John Carpenter has been somewhat overshadowed by more celebrated filmmakers such as Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, or Francis Ford Coppola. He found a niche in the horror genre with the landmark Halloween, and he proceeded to make one idiosyncratic, wholly original, and generally skillful film after another. Some were rather uneven, particularly in recent years, but for every Memoirs of an Invisible Man, there has been The Fog, Escape from New York, The Thing, or They Live. Carpenter’s list of credits boasts some exceptional work — inventive, daring, visually, and technically creative — but amongst these titles, one film stands out as a favorite of many cinephiles in general and Carpenter fans in particular.

As we come up on the 35th Anniversary of John Carpenter's seminal classic Halloween, Vimeo user Billy J. Kirkus has yet another gem on tap from the film... the very first take of the seminal film's opening scene in which Michael kills Judith.
“This is the first take of the opening to Halloween,” explains Kirkus. "This was the first time they tried shooting it, without the cuts that they did in take number 2. They only shot this whole scene twice. Notice all of the blue in the picture… completely toned down for the recent release of the movie on Blu-ray.
Kirkus also urges readers to contact Trancas Films and let them know you want to see the rest of the unseen Halloween footage.
“I was amazed that we got that shot in just a few takes, two to be exact” said Carpenter in Jamie Lee Curtis: Scream Queen by Jim Grove.

Halloween must qualify as one of the most re-released horror films in history – especially in the digital era. To celebrate Halloween, we look back at how John Carpenter created a low-budget horror classic...
It's the spring of 1978, and John Carpenter's in the midst of a risky decision. He's reached the 20th and final day of shooting on Halloween, and has a final few hours to compose what will become the movie's opening sequence: a point-of-view shot where we're introduced to the young Michael Myers, aged six. But rather than make things easy on himself by shooting the scene as simply as possible, he's decided to film it as one, unbroken sequence, with as few edits as he can get away with - an atmosphere-building bit of camera trickery inspired by Orson Welles' Touch Of Evil.

The shot requires camera operator Ray Stella to creep around the old house (hurriedly redecorated by cast and...

Arguably the horror genre's greatest 'scream queen' of all time, Jamie Lee Curtis made history last November when she appeared and signed autographs at Indiana's HorrorHound Weekend convention - the very first time she ever hit the convention circuit. Curtis vowed that it would not only be her first convention appearance but also her last, and that she would be donating all money made to Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Her experience at HorrorHound is documented in 'The Night She Came Home' - a special feature included on Anchor Bay's 35th Anniversary Blu-ray release of Halloween.
Though Curtis raised an impressive $150,000 for the charity, in just two days, her appearance at the convention inspired her to do even more. Taking on a classic is a gutsy move, even for an award-winning filmmaker. And when director Kimberly Peirce signed on to re-imagine Stephen King's horror classic "Carrie," about a teenage girl with telekinetic powers hellbent on revenge, she knew she had some sky-high expectations to meet.
"I'd make a joke and say, 'I didn't give a f*ck,' but of course I felt pressure!" she told us recently while doing press for "Carrie." "But I think pressure is good."
All that pressure had Peirce thinking long and hard about what it would mean to sign on to a project of this scale, with its history and existing fan base. Having made just one film, 2008's "Stop-Loss," since her 1999 directorial debut, "Boys Don't Cry," it's clear, as a filmmaker, she doesn't make decisions lightly.
"I walked into this feeling a huge responsibility, much like I did with 'Boys Don't Cry...
