Today, Jan. 1, isn’t just New Year’s Day — it’s also Public Domain Day, where thousands of cinematic treasures, literary classics, Great American Songbook selections, and works of art see their copyrights expire and enter the public domain.
The headliner this year is the fair use of Mickey Mouse — at least, the Steamboat Willie version of the beloved character — as that copyright expiration has been anticipated for years. However, there’s much more than just Mickey entering the public domain in 2024.

Warning: contains plot details for Ghosts series five episode two “Home”, and smut.
BBC One’s Ghosts is one of the few TV shows around that has successfully blurred the line between adult and child viewing. Kids love it, adults love it, and it’s long been appointment viewing for families doing that (almost miraculous in 2023) thing of gathering together around the same screen.
Making Ghosts’ comedy suitable for a mixed-age audience though, means keeping an eye on its adult content. The ruder gags need to be blink-and-you’ll-miss-them and cheeky, but never crass. The sordid circumstances of Julian’s 1990s Tory MP sex scandal death for instance, or Lady Button’s husband’s “Moroccan tea party” with two members of his household staff, are alluded to but never made explicit. The same goes for caveman Robin’s romantic exploits over the centuries, and his (cough) close relationship with his sister.

It’s been five years since idiosyncratic filmmaker Yorgos Lanthimos had his big Oscars breakthrough with “The Favourite,” which earned 10 nominations, and pulled off an upset in a Best Actress with Olivia Colman prevailing over Glenn Close. Success hasn’t tempered his adventurous spirit, though, as evidenced by his follow-up, “Poor Things,” which premiered to rave reviews at the Venice Film Festival on September 1. “Poor Things” could well reap double digit Oscar bids too (more on that below).

“Poor Things” tells the story of a young woman (Emma Stone) brought back to life by an unorthodox scientist (Willem Dafoe) who is then pursued by a millionaire (Mark Ruffalo). “She’s 100% a professional, and this is a great night for professionals,” said the actor Juliet Mills as she accepted Glenda Jackson’s first Best Actress Oscar on the absent winner’s behalf at the 1970 Academy Awards. On the face of it, it sounds an oddly impersonal thing to say in the circumstances — almost as if Mills knew nothing of Jackson, and opted for the vaguest praise possible.
It proved, however, a rather apt way for Jackson, then 34, to be welcomed into Hollywood’s inner circle. A proudly working-class Brit who didn’t look or act (on screen or off) like the blushing English roses typically imported from across the pond, Jackson had markedly more interest in being a professional actor than in being a movie star. That spared her, even as she racked up assignments and awards, much of the fuss and frippery associated with A-list status — going to the Oscars included.

Glenda Jackson, a two-time Academy Award-winning performer who had a second career in politics as a British lawmaker before an acclaimed late-life return to stage and screen, has died at age 87.
Jackson’s agent Lionel Larner said she died Thursday at her home in London after a short illness. He said she had recently completed filming “’The Great Escaper”, in which she co-starred with 90-year-old Michael Caine.
Caine said Jackson was “one of our greatest movie actresses. I shall miss her.”
Born into a working-class family in Birkhenhead, northwest England, in 1936 Jackson trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London. She performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company — where she starred in the cutting-edge drama “Marat/Sade” directed by Peter Brook — and became one of the biggest British stars of the 1960s and 70s, winning two Academy Awards, for the brooding D.H. Glenda Jackson, whose illustrious career spanned from classic feature films like Sunday Bloody Sunday, Women in Love and A Touch of Class to a political career at the British Parliament, passed peacefully this morning at her home in London. She was 87 years old. Jackson has been said to have been battling an illness recently. Although she had transitioned from movies to civil service, the actress will appear in one last film project as she just wrapped her scenes opposite Sir Michael Caine in a movie titled The Great Escaper.
Jackson’s agent Lionel Larner released an official statement according to Variety. In the statement, Larner declares, ”Glenda Jackson, two-time Academy Award-winning actress and politician, died peacefully at her home in Blackheath, London this morning after a brief illness with her family at her side. Glenda Jackson, the British actress who hit the snooze bar on her acting career for a 23-year career in politics, died on Thursday, as per her representatives. During her peak years in the 1970s and 80s, she won two Oscars (and was nominated for two more) and two Emmy Awards. She was nominated for four Tony Awards, finally winning one in 2018 after a late-in-life career resurgence. She was 87 years old.
Jackson, whose father was a bricklayer and whose mother was a barmaid and domestic, studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She was told by the academy’s principal that, due to her looks, she would likely only find work as a character actress, and she shouldn’t depend on getting jobs after 40.
This proved to be the opposite of true. Her big break came when experimental theater director Peter Brook cast her in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s groundbreaking adaptation of “Marat/Sade.

Glenda Jackson, who segued from a successful actress — Oscars for “Women in Love” and “A Touch of Class” and two Emmys for “Elizabeth R” — into a 23-year career as member of the U.K.’s House of Commons, has died. She was 87.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for all of the BBC’s Ghosts
When Ghosts first aired on the BBC in 2019 – with its exceptional ensemble cast including Charlotte Ritchie, Mathew Baynton, Lolly Adefope and Ben Willbond – you could say our spirits were instantly raised. Thankfully, the jokes on this much-loved sitcom are much better than that, which is partly why the show’s had four successful series, with a fifth on the way.
But Ghosts isn’t just about humour, it also makes us feel something. When married couple Alison and Mike discover they’ve inherited a mansion in the first episode, they arrive seeming quite lost in life. Button House’s ghostly occupants – including 1980s scoutmaster Pat, Georgian noblewoman Kitty and caveman Robin – aren’t faring much better in death. The way the characters bond, learning as much about themselves as they do their various pasts, makes Ghosts the...

Germany’s reunification as a backdrop for two attractive bodies uniting over and over again is one way to sum up Someday We’ll Tell Each Other Everything, which director Emily Atef (3 Days in Quiberon) adapted from Daniela Krien’s popular 2011 novel.
The problem with this handsomely made, well-acted and overwrought rural drama is precisely that: What’s interesting is not the doomed love affair between a beautiful 19-year-old girl and a strapping farmer more than twice her age, in a story that’s plays out like Lady Chatterley’s Lover meets Fifty Shades of Gray in the former Ddr. It’s whatever the film has to say about the struggling family and farming community that serves as its setting, during a period just after the fall of the Berlin Wall.
Unfortunately, Atef gives short shrift to the latter in favor of the former, in a movie that starts off rather promisingly...

Thirteen Lives
Ron Howard’s masterful portrait of the 2018 Thai cave rescue may have been hindered by a summer release and/or following the 2021 doc The Rescue. It deserves another look.
Best Director
Joseph Kosinski, Top Gun: Maverick
Maverick is one of 2022’s most critically and commercially successful films. It didn’t direct itself. Kosinski may not have a high profile, but he deserves respect.
Best Actor
Paul Mescal, Aftersun
For his subtle performance as a struggling young father in Charlotte Wells’ acclaimed indie, the Normal People star is already up for Critics Choice and Spirit awards. (His young co-star, Frankie Corio, is equally worthy.)
Best Actress
Ana de Armas, Blonde
Sure, the film’s too long and, in the eyes of some, exploitative — but that’s not the fault of this Cuban talent, who took a huge swing and hit a home run with her performance.

Here’s the downside to having an Oscar shortlist: Completely sidelining great contenders so early in the season.
One oversight by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Music branch this year was the “sexy and dangerous” original score, as the pic’s composer Isabella Summers puts it, of Netflix’s feature take on D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
And, yes, per Summers, Florence and the Machine is still together. As the British musician-turned-composer explains today on Crew Call, she was coming off a tour and got the chance to supply a song to indie pic Assassination Nation.
From there she was encouraged to make her foray into scoring, first working with Mark Isham on the Hulu limited series Little Fires Everywhere, on which they notched an Emmy nom for original dramatic limited series score. Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the first of four film scores by Summers to be unveiled.

In the past five years, 43 features have earned Academy Award nominations for best picture, and with those dozens of films, thematic throughlines have emerged that offer a sense of what kinds of films voters favor for the top prize.
Historical films have earned the most nominations, exemplified by Green Book winning the award in 2018. While crowd-pleasing blockbusters have also earned best picture nods in recent years (contrary to the perennial criticism that the Oscars are out of touch with what the average filmgoer is consuming), none has won the category.
And while biopics often earn acting trophies for those films’ stars, they are not necessarily the sorts of films Oscar voters select as their favorite of the year.

Toronto International Film Festival Announces 2022 TIFF Tribute Award for Performance
The cast of Michael Grandage’s My Policeman — Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, Linus Roache, David Dawson, and Rupert Everett — are the first-ever film ensemble to receive this honour
Cameron Bailey, CEO of TIFF, has announced that the ensemble cast of My Policeman — Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, Gina McKee, Linus Roache, David Dawson, and Rupert Everett — will be honoured with the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance.
Now in its fourth year, the TIFF Tribute Awards presented by Bvlgari will return to an in-person gala fundraiser during the 47th edition of the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, September 11, at Fairmont Royal York Hotel. As previously announced, My Policeman by director Michael Grandage will have its World Premiere at this year’s Festival.
The TIFF Tribute Award for Performance is presented by Polestar.
“When your film shifts through time and across fluid boundaries of love and desire, you need a cast that can embody those nuances in every gesture,” said Bailey. “Harry Styles, Emma Corrin, and David Dawson deliver beautiful, mirrored performances with Linus Roache, Gina McKee, and Rupert Everett. We’re thrilled to honour the ensemble cast of My Policeman with the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance.”
Adapted for the screen by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Ron Nyswaner from Bethan Roberts’ award-winning novel of the same name, Prime Video’s My Policeman follows three young people — policeman Tom (Styles), teacher Marion (Corrin), and museum curator Patrick (Dawson) — as they embark on an emotional journey in 1950s Britain. Flashing forward to the 1990s, Tom (Roache), Marion (McKee), and Patrick (Everett) are still reeling with longing and regret, but now they have one last chance to repair the damage of the past. Grandage carves a visually transporting, heart-stopping portrait of three people caught up in the shifting tides of history, liberty, and forgiveness.
For the first time ever, the TIFF Tribute Award for Performance will be celebrating an ensemble cast in the now gender-neutral acting category. This is the first of two performance awards to be announced. Past recipients honoured in the prestigious acting category were Jessica Chastain and Benedict Cumberbatch in 2021; Kate Winslet and Sir Anthony Hopkins in 2020; and Meryl Streep and Joaquin Phoenix in 2019.
The TIFF Tribute Awards have served as an awards-season bellwether, with past honourees Jessica Chastain, Roger Deakins, Sir Anthony Hopkins, Joaquin Phoenix, Taika Waititi, and Chloé Zhao going on to win awards on the international stage. The TIFF Tribute Awards honour the film industry’s outstanding contributors and their achievements, recognizing leading industry members, acting talent, directorial expertise, new talent, and a below-the-line artist and creator. The Awards event also serves as TIFF’s largest annual fundraiser to support TIFF’s Every Story fund, which promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in film and TIFF’s core mission to transform the way people see the world through film. More information on the 2022 TIFF Tribute Awards event and this year’s honourees will follow in the coming weeks.
My Policeman ensemble biographies
Harry Styles
Harry Styles is an international singer, songwriter, and actor. Styles made his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 acclaimed drama Dunkirk and can next be seen in Olivia Wilde’s upcoming film Don’t Worry Darling. My Policeman marks his first-ever starring role.
Emma Corrin
Actor Emma Corrin is best known for the role of Lady Diana Spencer in Season 4 of the Netflix worldwide, award-winning hit series The Crown.

Emma Corrin is heating up Netlflix in “Lady Chatterly’s Lover”, a new adaptation of the D.H. Lawrence novel that was famously banned for decades due to its “immorality.”
Corrin — who played Princess Diana in the fourth season of “The Crown” — stars as Lady Constance “Connie” Chatterley, whose crumbling marriage leads her to embark on a torrid affair with the new gamekeeper (Jack O’Connell).

In a new interview with People, Corrin was asked what she hoped viewers would experience from the film. “A journey that I think a lot of women go on is finding that power in your sexuality, and also knowing that it’s okay to want pleasure and to strive for pleasure, and for that to be a really powerful and beautiful thing and not something that you need to not acknowledge at all,...

It’s impossible to take your eyes off him.” Jack O’Connell is singing the praises of Stephen Graham, whom he first met on the set of Shane Meadows’s modern classic This is England. Graham was 33; O’Connell was 16. They both played skinheads. Shorn skulls, fast fists, and racism never far away. “It was tough material but Stephen approaches it with this realism. He is just so…” O’Connell can’t find the words. Instead, the actor sinks into his sofa and shakes his head in awe. He’s still sporting the buzz cut.
In fact, the same can and has been said of O’Connell himself. The 32-year-old has been making easy work of tough material ever since his film debut as the braces-wearing spark plug Pukey in This Is England. The parts that followed mined similar wells of emotions. Namely, anger. For the better part of two decades, O...

Staying true to the D.H. Lawrence classic, theater actor Matthew Duckett, who has cerebral palsy, made his feature film debut with “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” — the first disabled actor to play the part of Clifford on a Netflix production. The film started to stream Dec. 2 on the platform.
“I’ve been in a great many productions where I’ve been allowed to live in my disability, which has been incredibly freeing as an actor,” Duckett said, describing the differing approaches to how productions address the accessibility needs of their actors. “But something I was really grateful to see happen was to have someone on-set dedicated to my needs as a disabled artist and to the honesty of the production of a disabled character.”

Much like “Moonlight,” “The Inspection” has the trappings of an instant queer classic.
Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival, writer-director Elegance Bratton’s semi-autobiographical film, about a young gay Black man’s desire for approval and human connection in an unforgiving environment poisoned by bigotry and toxic masculinity, tells essential truths about the state of queer life in America outside gay villages and other safe spaces. Yet stories like these have seldom been told even as queer cinema has steadily evolved beyond homogeneous narratives.
Bratton’s avatar, Ellis French, has been living in a homeless shelter for years. He visits his mother, Inez (Gabrielle Union), to retrieve his birth certificate in order to join the Marine Corps. With the door still chained, Inez hands over his mail, including a court summons. When she finally lets him in,...

The opening credits of “Hunt,” a South Korean thriller that premiered at the Cannes Film Festival at midnight on Thursday, offer an unusual juxtaposition. The first card in Lee Jung-jae’s film points out that this is a fictional story, and any resemblance to real people, etc. But that’s immediately followed by several cards laying out the political history of South Korea in the 1970s and ’80s: How a military coup took over in 1979 after the assassination of the president, and how the leader installed by that coup eventually claimed the presidency and began a crackdown on the press and anyone who didn’t agree with him.
So what is “Hunt?” A fictional story, or the thinly-disguised tale of what happened after this new president, who is conspicuously unnamed throughout the film,...

An atmospheric labyrinth of reflections and projections, “The Eternal Daughter” expands on British director Joanna Hogg’s recent excavations into memory, both as torturous malaise and gratifying human virtue crucial to deciphering interpersonal relationships.
A master of meta storytelling, Hogg once again transmutes intimate biographical material into the dramatic foundation of her intricate cinematic monuments for this ghostly saga following a middle-aged woman and her elderly mother on a birthday holiday. They are, however, not just any progenitor-offspring duo, but characters from her last brainchildren.
Tilda Swinton, the director’s most loyal onscreen collaborator, incarnates Julie Hart, the burgeoning filmmaker and Hogg surrogate in “The Souvenir” films, but now at a more mature age. Because we are acutely aware of the un-bliss and infidelity to come, the starry-eyed wedding vows at the start of the latest “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” — premiering at the 2022 Telluride Film Festival — seem both aching and mischievous to us. Happily ever after? Not so fast.
But they certainly mean something sacred to Lady Constance Chatterley, played spiritedly by Emma Corrin (Princess Diana of “The Crown”) in a performance of feathery grace. With her young head in the clouds and heart fluttering with romance, completely unaware of the type of tale she’s leading, you can see in her glowingly lit face that she means every blissful word of her matrimonial pledge to Lord Clifford (Matthew Duckett), a square nobleman soon to be shipped back to the Great War. Plot: Based on the classic D.H. Lawrence novel, a story well ahead of its time, we follow the life of Lady Chatterley, a woman born to a life of wealth and privilege, who soon finds herself married to a man that she eventually falls out of love with. Lady Chatterley engages in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate, discovering more desire and intimacy than she thought possible. When she realizes that she has fallen heart and soul, she breaks all traditions of the day and seeks happiness with the man she loves.
Review: Whether you have read it or not, the reputation of Lady Chatterley’s Lover casts a huge shadow over the annals of literature. Written by D.H. Lawrence, Lady Chatterley’s Lover has been a commonly banned book due to its explicit sexual content, including some of the first uses of profane language in popular fiction.

Lady Chatterley’s Lover is a 2022 drama movie directed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre starring Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell. Another adaptation of the novel written by D.H. Lawrence.
The erotic awakening of a dissatisfied woman, in this well-known story that has been adapted with exquisite photographic flair.
Premise
Lady Chatterley, disenchanted in her marriage, despite leading a life of wealth and privilege, gets involved in a torrid affair with a gamekeeper on their English estate. The passion she discovers and level of intimacy is beyond what she ever imagined.
Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2022) Movie Review
The provocative story by D.H. Lawrence that gave so much to talk about and became a revelation in its era. Beyond the literary analysis – and keeping in mind that it is not the first erotic novel in history (to be read the irony), it did have substance and was wonderfully written.

Can a film with an entire scene of full-frontal frolicking in the rain still feel polite? Yes, as it turns out. Lady Chatterley’s Lover is the god tier in sexy literary classics, but the sexiest thing in Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s Netflix adaptation are the shots of the English countryside. That surely doesn’t feel right.
Emma Corrin plays posh, yearning Constance Chatterley; Jack O’Connell is Mellors, the gruff gamekeeper who catches her eye after her husband, the upper-class Sir Clifford, is maimed in battle. I so wanted to love this film. A literary period drama? Sexual tension across the class divide? The shadow of war? Wonderful actors? It must be nearly Christmas. But instead of crackling with electricity, it just hums like an energy-efficient light bulb.
Dh Lawrence’s now infamous 1928 novel is about the human spirit recovering from a cataclysmic war. “Ours is essentially a tragic age,...

Romantic and sexy, the latest adaptation of D.H Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover has Emma Corrin (The Crown) as the titular Lady and Jack O’Connell (Unbroken) as the Lady’s working-class lover, Oliver Mellors. Lawrence’s work, controversial in its time, has been adapted countless times over. Thanks to the sizzling chemistry between Corrin and O’Connell, director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s version is one of the best.
Screenwriter David Magee’s adaptation of Lawrence’s classic novel arrives on Netflix in 2022 as a luscious bodice ripper and rebuke of society’s expectations and restrictions within well-defined classes.

The nearly hundred-year-old source material for “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” once roused calls for censorship worldwide. Dh Lawrence’s novel, and now the new film (in theaters and streaming on Netflix Dec. 2) explores themes of class, relationships and sexual pleasure while remaining grounded in the time period of 1920s England.
Costume designer Emma Fryer had much to consider during her creative process: the changing seasons, the locales (London as well as the countryside), and the characters’ actual and symbolic journeys.

To celebrate the release of Lady Chatterley’s Lover, the newest adaptation of D.H. Lawrence’s renowned novel, we had the pleasure of chatting with the film’s cast and director about why it’s worthwhile reinventing the story.
Marrying Sir Clifford Chatterley, Connie’s life of wealth and privilege seems set as she takes the title of Lady Chatterley. Yet this idealistic union gradually becomes an incarceration when Clifford returns from the First World War with injuries that have left him unable to walk. When she meets and falls for Oliver Mellors, the gamekeeper on the Chatterley family estate, their secret trysts lead her to a sensual, sexual awakening. But as their affair becomes the subject of local gossip, Connie faces a life-altering decision: follow her heart or return to her husband and endure what Edwardian society expects of her.

Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell carry this idealistic, moving French version of Dh Lawrence’s transgressive novel
Here is a movie that could so easily collapse into self-satire, especially at the first sneery-knowing intonation of the word “milady”, a phrase probably now most associated with Parker from Thunderbirds. But the commitment and passion of its two lead performers, Emma Corrin and Jack O’Connell, carries this new version of Dh Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley’s Lover, and the actor turned director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre finds the keynote of idealism. The film is never shy of eroticism and full-on sex, if sometimes going for a slightly quaint soft-focus approach. But Clermont-Tonnerre is never in any doubt that this is a love story. The last adaptation of any note was from another French film-maker, Pascale Ferran’s flawed Lady Chatterley (based on an earlier version of the book). Perhaps it takes a...

The winter holidays are rapidly bearing down upon us, so what better way to get into the festive spirit than by streaming, er, Denis Villeneuve's dramatic thriller "Prisoners"? Luckily, for those who are not in the mood to watch Hugh Jackman brutalize Paul Dano for two-and-a-half hours, there are plenty of alternate options to choose from on Netflix this December.
In keeping with tradition, the final month of 2022 will see an eclectic mix of genre films and TV series make their way onto the streamer, along with more than a few awards season hopefuls. The latter group's ranks include a new screen take on D.H. Lawrence's classic erotic novel "Lady Chatterley's Lover" and a movie adaptation of "Roald Dahl's Matilda The Musical." Then there are the latest films from multi-hyphenates Alejandro G. Iñárritu and Noah Baumbach ("White Noise"), on top of a pair of much-buzzed-about director-driven features that we will get to later.

Emma Fryer had read “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” prior to being hired as the costume designer for Netflix’s adaptation of the D.H. Lawrence novel, but she made a conscious choice not to reread it.
“The most brilliant starting point was that script and the brilliance of that script. The first reading of it, as a costume designer, just sitting quietly, that first read is pivotal to creating visuals in your head and visualizing what these characters are,” Fryer tells Gold Derby at our Meet the Experts: Film Costume Designers panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “I always think you very often come back to those very first thoughts that are connected to the first read.”

Hollywood is positively overflowing with talented British actors. Superman is British, Spider-Man is British -- hell, we're on our second British Batman. But if you've noticed that the vast majority of those actors seem to come from the south of England, that they all seem to have roughly the same accent, and (with a little more digging) that most of them went to prestigious private schools with eye-watering annual fees ... well, you're not the first to pick up on that.

Emma Corrin has described filming a naked scene outdoors for a forthcoming film “the most exhilarating experience of my life”.
The actor, best known for portraying a young Princess Diana in The Crown, is set to play the lead role in a new adaptation of Dh Lawrence’s classic novel Lady Chatterley’s Lover.
According to Corrin, actors had to film scenes for the film “completely naked in the Welsh countryside” – which was part of the reason she signed up for the project in the first place.
Appearing on The Graham Norton Show on Friday (4 November), Corrin, who uses they/them pronouns, described filming the scenes.
“When I got the script Laure [de Clermont-Tonnerre] our director was already attached and she is incredible, and there was a crazy scene where they both dance naked in the rain,” they said.

The trailer for Netflix's upcoming film adaptation of the literary classic, "Lady Chatterley's Lover," is here, and like the controversial D.H. Lawrence novel from which it's adapted, things get a little hot and heavy in it. There's more than one pair of bared buttocks, and you may or may not glimpse an "unhappily married aristocrat" straddle the "gamekeeper on her husband's country estate," as Netflix describes the couple.
"Lady Chatterley's Lover" stars Emma Corrin, who was nominated for an Emmy for their portrayal of Princess Diana in season 4 of "The Crown." Jack O'Connell co-stars and the movie is helmed by Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, who was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for her 2019 directorial debut "The Mustang." Few modern novels were as scandalous upon release as D.H. Lawrence‘s “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.” The book, about an affair between an upper-class woman and a working-class man, remains infamous for its frank erotic prose and explicit sex scenes. In fact, the novel ruffled the feathers of UK publishers so much that it wasn’t published in full in Lawrence’s native England until 1960, thirty years after its initial release.

Netflix and Sony 3000 Pictures unveiled the first trailer for the forthcoming film adaptation “Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” based on the classic novel about a neglected woman whose affair with her husband’s gamekeeper sparks a sexual awakening.
Fans of the D.H. Lawrence novel’s steamier sections won’t be disappointed: plenty of bodice-ripping, bare buttocks and rain-soaked embraces are to be found as Lady Constance “Connie” Chatterley (Emma Corrin) and Oliver (Jack O’Connell) pursue a forbidden romance.
The blue-hued clip starts off with a flashback to Connie and Clifford Chatterley’s wedding day, their austere expressions saying it all. “I’m not really a part of this world,” Connie confesses during a montage of lonely days at the estate.

Emma Corrin is courting scandal in the Netflix adaptation of the controversial novel “Lady Chatterley’s Lover.”
“The Crown” alum stars as the titular Lady Connie Chatterley, who embarks on an affair with gamekeeper Mellors (Jack O’Connell) while her ailing husband, Sir Clifford (Matthew Duckett), grows suspicious. Joely Richardson also stars as Sir Clifford Chatterley’s nurse. The film premieres in select theaters November 25 and will be streaming on Netflix December 2.

“When I reread the novel, I thought it could have been written today,” director de Clermont-Tonnerre told Vogue. “It’s scary that not that much has changed since the ’20s.
