Bongo is gearing up for the release of an additional Simpsons spinoff series with the upcoming release of Bart Simpson’s Pal, Milhouse. This will be the first comic book to be based on Bart Simpsons’ plucky sidekick and will be written by Batgirl writer Gail Simone and Pat McGrealm with illustrative work being handled by Bob Smitjh, Carol Lay, Jason Ho and Mike Rote.
Bart Simpson’s pal Milhouse takes center stage in the next of our series of Simpsons Comics One-Shots. Take a look at the world of Springfield through the eyes of Bart’s bespectacled best friend, second banana, and juvenile delinquent wannabe, and the fantastical things you see through his thick lenses might surprise you.

Keith Knight will be at the GooglePlex in Mountain View, CA today at 11 Am. Keef will be showing his world famous slideshow consisting of his favorite and controversial Knight Life, (th)ink and K Chronicle comic strips.
Which is also as good a place as any to mention that The K Chronicles website has be revamped. Visitors can now comment, purchase prints and more. Coming soon will be access to the full archive of both strips, along with multi-page stories and strips going back to Knight's college days.
You may have to go there now to read the strip, because after more than a decade of posting on Salon.com, the K Chronicles follows Carol Lay's Story Minute in leaving the popular website. From Knight: "It was made clear to me that keeping the strip on the site wasn't a priority. I thank Salon for the exposure."...

Syncopated: An Anthology of Nonfiction Picto-Essays
Edited by Brendan Burford
Villard, May 2009, $16.95
For most of the past fifty years, American comics had been running through an ever-tightening spiral of acceptable topics – somewhat mitigated by occasional art-comics eruptions – as superheroes and (ever less and less) other areas thought acceptable for children dominated ever more and more each year. And one little-remarked side effect of that spiral was that nonfiction comics, stories that actually were true, became so marginalized that they practically didn’t exist. Everything was fiction – even the memoirish comics of the undergrounds were transmuted into fiction – and the truth was nowhere to be found on the comics page.
That’s changed in the past decade or so, as a generation of new or newly energized creators have grappled with their own lives and histories, bringing forth a host of primarily memoir-based comics, from Perseopolis to Fun Home to Cancer Vixen.

The Big Skinny: How I Changed My Fattitude
By Carol Lay
Villard, January 2009, $18.00
In the wake of Perseopolis and similar works, graphic novels have become ever more popular for acquisition editors at the major trade publishing houses. But, just as the direct market twists products in the direction of its own obsessions – spandex, punches, and chivalry twisted through at least two axes, these days – those mainstream publishers have their own market trends and forces, and they’re looking for particular things themselves. To be blunt, all of the big-publisher GNs seem to be memoirs of one sort or another. Some of them are “here’s my life in numbing detail” books, like David Heatley’s My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down, and some are small stories of particular moments and times, like Lucy Knisley’s French Milk – but they all are personal stories of one kind or another.
