Had been a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) since 1935.
Began as a camera operator at Biograph in New York in the early 1930's. Director of photography from 1952, his varied career encompassing many routine assignments as well as occasional gems, such as Anatomy of a Murder (1959) and Cape Fear (1962).
