I held a great deal of hope for Winter’s Tale, but it ultimately fell flat. It had the makings of greatness, following slightly with the premise of C.S. Lewis’ Screw Tape Letters. Unfortunately, I found myself bored and wondering how this turned out so badly with such a wonderful cast. Most disappointing was Colin Farrell as the lead, Peter Lake. Seems to me he has a way of making many films subpar. You wait for him to deliver an extraordinary response or two during several pivotal scenes but just get a big fat nothing.
Peter Lake is an orphaned thief trying to get free from a mystical demon, Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe), who works under Lucifer (Will Smith). Peter is able to escape when a flying white horse appears out of nowhere. The combination of fantasy and drama utilized in this film just didn’t work; you were often...

The Samurai Trilogy (Criterion) Director Hiroshi Inagaki’s sprawling epic filmed from 1954-56 is an early Japanese Technicolor masterpiece, rivaling the scope of filmmakers like David Lean and Luchino Visconti. Toshiro Mifune, Japan’s greatest actor, stars as real-life swordsman, artist and writer Musashi Miyamoto, following his growth from callow youth to disciplined warrior. The three films: the Oscar winning “Musashi Miyamoto,” “Duel at Ichijoji Temple,” and “Duel at Ganryu Island” are an incredible story of human growth, tender love and sublime, blood-soaked action. Not to be missed. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Interviews with translator and historian William Scott Wilson; Trailers. Full screen. Dolby 1.0 mono.
The 39 Steps (Criterion) Alfred Hitchcock’s 1935 story of spies, conspiracies and sexual tension put him on the map on both sides of the Pond. Robert Donat stars as an innocent thrust into a deadly plot alongside a cool blonde (Madeleine Carroll...

Chicago – The intensity that Robert De Niro puts into his movie characters had slackened a bit, as he bent his reputation on more commercial roles. But Director Paul Weitz has revived the old legend with a meaty, purposeful character, and De Niro delivers it with his old fire. ‘Being Flynn’ is not a comeback, but a gratefully received reboot.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
This exceptional character study has De Niro playing a homeless man, accepting the fate with as much rancor and cardboard philosophy as he can muster. What is so impressive about the role is that it’s wrapped in a logical, sensitive story about the relationship between a father and son, at a point where all the signs and past encounters should add up to no relationship at all. This is the jumping off place for De Niro’s characterization, and it never devolves into sentiment or easy solutions. Paul Weitz...

Chicago – Part of the fun in watching movies is experiencing the career evolution of a particular director. One such career is Paul Weitz, who began with the memorable “American Pie,” went a bit more serious with “About a Boy” and “In Good Company,” and cements his credibility in the insightful “Being Flynn.”
In 1999 Paul and his brother Chris Weitz made their directorial debut with the sex comedy classic “American Pie,” and both have helped each other as collaborators throughout their separate careers ever since. Paul’s director credits have been a progression, becoming increasing more substantial (his pick-up in 2010 of “Little Fockers” notwithstanding). “Being Flynn” connects the director to issues regarding homelessness and the writer’s life, and he guides both subjects with a natural intuition, a respect for his characters and an unexpected depth.

If Emmys were given out for Outstanding Interview Subject, Parks And Recreation star Nick Offerman — better known to viewers as meat-lovin’, tough-talkin’, man’s man Ron Swanson — would be a shoe-in. No, really. Having spent the past four years interviewing the Who’s Who of the television world, we here at theTVaddict.com are usually fairly-well prepared for anything an interviewee might throw at us. Yet, Offerman actually did something no other subject has managed to do: make us want to be a better person. Whether praising his colleagues (calling the show’s writers room “the best in the biz”) or speaking wistfully about wife Megan Mullally and their pups, one can’t help but be struck by the eloquence and sincerity of his words. And every now and then, he also manages to completely surprise you, as when Pawnee’s gruffest resident admits, “When I get around my family,...

I would be complaining about waking up early this morning, but then again, I was going out to Brooklyn to hang with the king of the borough: Mr. Carter himself, Jay-z. We were in the penthouse at the Clock Tower Condos with a view to die for. No surprise on the Brooklyn love in the scenery or personnel-wise, since there was another surprise Brooklynite in the building: director and lifetime Knicks fan Spike Lee.
As tempted as I was to talk about how poorly management has handled our boys Nate Robinson and David Lee, truth is, Spike was all business. He was directing Jay in the new Rocawear commercial and, more specifically, a spot celebrating the 10th anniversary of the clothing label. As a young guy in the game of entertainment, it was pretty amazing being allowed in the same room with Spike Lee, let alone to...

Blu-Ray Rating: 1.0/5.0 Chicago – There is a great film to be made about the African-American experience during World War II. Spike Lee’s “Miracle at St. Anna” is not that film and the below average Blu-Ray of it should make this once highly-anticipated epic one of the more easily forgettable releases of the month.
Spike Lee is one of the more intriguing filmmakers alive. He’s missed the mark a few times but the man who made “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” “Clockers,” “Get on the Bus,” “4 Little Girls,” “The Original Kings of Comedy,” “25th Hour,” “Inside Man,” and “When the Levees Broke” should be paid attention to every single time he gets in the director’s chair. Some of those are among the best films of the last twenty years, and even his previous failures felt like a director shooting for something unique and misfiring.
