In 2014, Nancy Dolan — manager of creative music marketing at Disney — was denied a promotion to director over the objections of her supervisor, president of music Mitchell Leib, who said she was “worth her weight in gold.” He urged higher-ups to reconsider the decision.
“Nancy back-filled and took over the entire position of an EVP more than three years ago for a fraction of the cost and is invaluable to me,” Mitchell wrote in an email to Sean Bailey, president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production, according to newly unsealed court filings in a pay bias lawsuit against the company.
Pointing to “terrible scores” in an employee satisfaction survey among women frustrated with opportunities for career advancement, Mitchell added, “You need only look at Nancy to see the inequity.” He stressed he had a “hard time believing that my impression of what’s just for Nancy could be skewed from...

Bob Iger likely wishes 2023 looked a lot more like 2019.
In a document dump this week for the recently class-action-certified pay-equity suits against Disney, the Mouse House CEO’s 2019 corporate self-evaluation was among the papers placed in the Los Angeles Superior Court’s docket.
“In 2019, Disney was awarded an A+ as one of ‘America’s Most Trustworthy Public Companies’ and was #1 in a ‘Brand Intimacy Study’ recognizing the power in building bonds with consumers,” reads the bullet-point evaluation Iger wrote four years ago to the Disney board. “The company was also named one of the ‘World’s Most Admired Companies’ by Fortune and one of the world’s ‘Most Reputable Companies’ by Forbes. Fast Company ranked Disney as the #1 ‘Most Innovative Company’ in Media.”
Those accolades were added to by Iger himself, who also noted: “In fiscal 2019, we prepared for the historical launch of Disney+. We successfully executed a highly-anticipated Investor...

Lyricist and composer Paul Williams will be honored by the 13th annual Guild of Music Supervisors awards with the 2023 Icon award at the Wiltern Theatre in Los Angeles on March 5. The awards show will also be posthumously honoring former Sony Pictures Entertainment senior VP and music supervisor, Pilar McCurry.
Williams’ standards have been recorded by such decorated artists as Ray Charles, David Bowie, Barbra Streisand, Tony Bennett, Diana Ross, the Carpenters, Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Luther Vandross and Willie Nelson, among others. He’s previously been recognized with six Oscars, nine Grammys, six Golden Globes, and two Emmy nominations.
“There is a strange, beautiful alchemy, that occurs when the perfect song placement transforms
both the scene and the song,” said Williams in a news release. “I have been graced with many opportunities to write music for picture in my career, and it feels like magic every single time.

"Empire Records" is a movie that not a ton of people saw, but many of us who came up in the late '90s/early aughts remember the 1995 film quite fondly. The movie was directed by Allan Moyle (who will always be my hero for giving us "Pump Up the Volume") from a screenplay by Carol Heikkinen. It centers on a day -- Rex Manning Day! -- in the life of a ragtag group of record store employees as they try to stop their shop, Empire Records, from becoming just another Music Town.
I worked at an independent music store in the early 2000s, one that was doomed to eventually be sold to a large chain. I have clear memories of all of us saying, "Damn the man. Save the Empire!" on more than one occasion. Sadly, there was no saving CD World and we were all soon out of...

Apparently there was some behind-the-scenes drama over who got what gig on the “Top Gun: Maverick” soundtrack, at least according to Twenty-One Pilots lead frontman Tyler Joseph.
Joseph told Los Angeles-based rock radio station Kroq (via Indiewire) that the band had begun discussing the possibility of writing a new song for the movie, but then things abruptly went sideways when Cruise decided to change things up.
(If you need a minute to open Spotify and make sure you’ve ever actually heard a Twenty-One Pilots song, please take that time now.)
“I was working with the music placement person for the new ‘Top Gun’ on writing a new song for them, and then I believe Tom Cruise came in and just fired everyone,” Joseph told Kroq. “You’ve seen that new ‘Top Gun’ thing that he’s got? A version of this story about the music in “Mulan” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Harry Gregson-Williams called it “a happy accident.” While the prolific composer was writing the score for Disney’s live-action version of “Mulan,” a mutual friend had suggested he get together with songwriter and producer Jamie Hartman — and as soon as Hartman heard the melody that Gregson-Williams was writing for the title character, he said, “There’s a bloody song here.”
Pictured above: Harry Gregson-Williams, Jamie Hartman
The two men had never worked together before and didn’t have an assignment to write a “Mulan” song — but between the inspiration Hartman found in Gregson-Williams’ melody and the “Loyal Brave True” inscription on the sword that the character Mulan steals from her father in the film, they immediately found themselves turning that phrase into a song.

Last week, Disney executive Mitchell Leib announced on the Light the Fuse podcast that Disney will be moving forward with Tron 3 starring Jared Leto for Disney+. A decade has passed since the sequel, Tron: Legacy so the news came as a surprise. That begged the question whether Tron fans are excited about a third movie and the new lead. CineMovie conducted a poll and the results were surprising.

Disney don’t exactly make small movies. While most other studios tend to strike a balance between mega-budget blockbusters and more cost-effective fare, in recent years, the Mouse House have focused almost exclusively on huge projects designed to dominate the box office and little else.
With brands like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Pixar, a steady stream of live-action remakes of their animated classics and now a whole host of big-name Fox properties under their umbrella, the all-conquering overlords of entertainment clearly don’t have much interest in funding prestige dramas or mid-budget genre films.
One Disney franchise that’s long been rumored for another reboot is Tron, despite both a sequel to 2010’s Legacy and a Disney Plus series both having fallen by the wayside. The last movie may have earned $400 million globally, but didn’t do the numbers Disney were expecting given the $170 million budget.

Composer Hans Zimmer must be glad that ASCAP’s 2020 Screen Music Awards are virtual, because he’s so busy with upcoming films that he wouldn’t have time to pick up his Top Box Office award for last year’s “The Lion King” anyway.
He is, however, doing a live Q&a Thursday with Mitchell Leib, Disney’s president of music & soundtracks, to commemorate the ASCAP honor. (That live interview takes place at 3:25 p.m. Pt /6:25 Et June 25 at www.ascapexperience.com/; virtually admission is free but registration is required.)
Variety caught up with the Oscar and Grammy winner to talk about why his “Lion King” experience is more relevant than ever, and how it happens that 2020 — despite the pandemic — is turning out to be his busiest year ever
Variety: You have seven movies scheduled to come out this year…
Zimmer: It’s like, I’ve never been busier.

A week after ASCAP gave out its pop awards, the performing rights organization rolled out another round of kudos with the ASCAP Screen Music Awards for composers, announced online Tuesday morning as the kickoff to a two-day online event taking place in lieu of the org’s usual black-tie dinner in Beverly Hills as a result of ongoing quarantining.

Exclusive: After months of discussion, Disney has set a deal with Bruno Mars. The studio will develop a music-themed theatrical narrative feature that Mars will star in and produce. The plot is being kept under wraps, but I’m told that it will consist of mostly original music that he will create and perform.
This comes in the wake of a precedent-setting deal with Lin-Manuel Miranda for the Hamilton musical film, for which the studio paid $75 million for worldwide rights. Both deals had at their center Walt Disney Studios production president Sean Bailey. Integral in the Mars deal was Mitchell Leib, who heads music for the film group.
Mars previously appeared in Honeymoon in Vegas and was a featured voice in Rio 2. I’ve heard that the film has come out of a long series of discussions between Mars and Bailey. Now, they will set a writer or writer-director...

A few weeks ago I peeled open my rib cage to reveal my raw, beating heart and the sound of that heart was (to the tune of “thump-thump, thump-thump”) : Fright-night, Fright-night, Fright….
Yeah, I worship writer/director Tom Holland’s 1985 vampire gem and I fly that fanged flag with pride.
