Mirra Andreeva has made immense progress on the women's circuit since she burst onto the scene in the first half of last season, and she is now set to reach a career-high ranking.
Andreeva defeated home crowd favorite Varvara Gracheva 7-5, 6-2 on Monday on Court Suzanne Lenglen. She converted five of nine break points en route to victory and became the last woman to punch her ticket into the quarterfinal at the 2024 Roland Garros.
The 17-year-old made her full Grand Slam senior debut at last year's French Open, where she navigated the qualifying rounds to reach the main draw. Andreeva registered her first win at a major when she beat Alison Riske in the first round in Paris.
She would follow up that upset win by beating Diane Parry to reach the third round. There, she met Coco Gauff, a fellow teenager at the time, and lost in straight sets.

Hubert Hurkacz is known as an affable tennis player with a good sense of humor, but his fourth-round defeat at Roland Garros went against his good-natured character.
Hurkacz played his good friend Grigor Dimitrov on Sunday on Court Suzanne Lenglen. Both players were seeking to reach a maiden quarterfinal at the clay-court Grand Slam.
The match was extremely tight, but Dimitrov's finesse trumped Hurkacz's power and serving prowess. The Bulgarian saved three break points at 5-6 in the first set to win in a tie-break.
He would break Hurkacz for the first time midway through the second and consolidate to take a two-set lead. But the drama unfolded in the third set when the Pole faulted chair umpire Alison Hughes, who correctly called out one of his forehands.
Hurkacz felt that it landed inside the court, but he had mistakenly chosen the wrong mark and demanded that a supervisor be summoned to the court.

Boris Becker ripped into Roland Garros organizers after Novak Djokovic's historic win in the third round, which finished in the early hours of Sunday morning.
On Saturday, Djokovic's third-round match against Lorenzo Musetti kicked off at least a couple of hours after the initial start time communicated on the order of play.
That is because the tournament worked around the clock to establish a means to complete the suspended matches on the outside courts. So, the two main courts with a roof, Court Philippe-Chatrier and Court Suzanne Lenglen, saw a makeup schedule.
Djokovic, who was scheduled to play on Chatrier, was the main star attraction for the night session commencing at 8:15 pm local time. But because Grigor Dimitrov's match with Zizou Bergs was moved to the main court during the evening, the top seed was made to wait for almost two hours.
The three-time champion took to the court at almost 11 p.

Ben Shelton was knocked out of the 2024 Roland Garros in the third round stage and has outlined what went wrong.
Competing at the French Open for the second time in his career, Shelton gave a better account of himself, scoring an elusive first-round win over Hugo Gaston and then benefitting from a retirement from Japan's Kei Nishikori to reach the third round.
There, the American lefty met an in-form Felix Auger-Aliassime, who had won 11 matches on clay this season. The Canadian proved a step ahead of the 21-year-old, who could not adapt to the playing conditions as rain caused the suspension of their match on Friday while trailing 4-5 in the opening set.
On resumption, the match was scheduled for completion on Court Suzanne Lenglen, and Auger-Aliassime dropped three games for the remainder of the contest to reach the second week.

Iga Swiatek proved quite clumsy during the trophy ceremony, losing the lid of the Roland Garros trophy for a moment.
Iga Swiatek finished off another two great weeks in Paris with the trophy. Despite being down a break twice in the final set of her match against Karolina Muchova, Iga Swiatek ended up as the winner with a furious comeback. She won her 3rd Roland Garros trophy and 4th Grand Slam trophy overall.
Despite being an experienced Roland Garros trophy lifter, Swiatek still committed a pretty big faux pas during the ceremony. She shook the trophy without holding the lid which made it fall off until French Tennis Federation president Gilles Moretton didn't pick it up and handed it back to her. It was pretty funny for an unintentional situation.
Yeah, I'm sorry for that.

Mirra Andreeva played great at the 2023 Roland Garros but it wasn't enough to make it to the second week of the tournament.
At just 16 years old, the young Russian is one of the most talented players on the Wta Tour. However, during her third-round match against Coco Gauff at the 2023 Roland Garros, Andreeva made a move that nearly ended her tournament run prematurely.
After squandering two set points during a first-set tiebreak against Gauff, Andreeva reacted by smacking a ball into the crowd. The ball struck an area in the fourth row of the Suzanne Lenglen crowd, a move that could have led to her disqualification from the tournament.
However, 'only' a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct was issued by umpire Timo Janzen. While no one was hit, had the ball struck anyone in the crowd, the young Russian could have been automatically defaulted from the tournament as per the Grand Slam Rulebook.

Paris, June 1 (Ians) Former champion Novak Djokovic and World No.1 Carlos Alcaraz continued their pursuit of the French Open title and the chance to become World No.1 as they both advanced to the third round at the Roland Garros here.
Djokovic overcame a pulsating first-set challenge from Marton Fucsovics before accelerating to an ultimately comfortable 7-6(2), 6-0, 6-3 second-round victory on Wednesday night.
Playing on Court Philippe Chatrier just before him, Alcaraz recovered from a mid-match dip to book his spot in the third round in Paris for the third consecutive year.
After clinching the opening set, the top seed suffered a loss of concentration in the second set against Taro Daniel. However, the 20-year-old quickly improved his level to advance past the Japanese star 6-1, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.

Tennis legend Martina Navratilova will executive produce a feature documentary on all-time greats from another era — Suzanne Lenglen and Helen Wills.
“The Goddess and The American Girl” tells the story of French tennis champion Suzanne Lenglen and American sensation Helen Wills against the backdrop of the Roaring Twenties. The feminist Lenglen and the embodiment of American energy Wills took center stage in a tennis match at Cannes in 1926 — dubbed the “Match of the Century” — and in the process changed women’s lives forever.
Featuring unprecedented access to original 1920s footage, which will be colorized, the documentary explores the emerging role of women through the lens of Lenglen and Wills’ epic battle.
Navratilova said: “Everything was a man’s world, and these women transcended the sport. They blazed that trail. They affected women’s rights and gave women the right to dream. To hope.”
