Director Joshua Erkman’s feature debut, “A Desert,” will be launched for world sales by Yellow Veil Pictures ahead of its Tribeca Film Festival premiere in June.
The film stars Kai Lennox, David Yow (“I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore”) and Sarah Lind (“A Wounded Fawn”). Cinematographer Jay Keitel shot the film and Ty Segall composed its soundtrack and original score.
“A Desert” marks the first production from Yellow Veil Pictures in partnership with Capes & Fog, a production company founded by Erkman.
The film follows a past-his-prime photographer on a road trip across the American Southwest hoping to recapture the magic and success of his previous work. Instead, he finds himself thrust into the dark and chaotic underbelly of America and unwittingly drags his wife and a shady private detective down into the nightmare world with him.

“God’s Country” was reviewed by TheWrap out of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival.
“God’s Country” is the latest offering in a trend of reimagining both the Western and the thriller, as this film is also tagged, with Black leads. Thandiwe Newton, a 2018 Emmy winner for “Westworld,” stars as Sandra Guidry in an adaptation of James Lee Burke’s 1992 short story “Winter Light” about a college professor who gets into a battle of wills with two hunters who trespass on her property in Montana.
For filmmaker Julian Higgins, his feature-length debut is the second time around for the core story. Back in 2015, Higgins directed a successful short of the same name with, in keeping with the story, an older white male protagonist as lead. Obviously, a Black female star brings a different nuance to the narrative, but the real question may be whether Higgins and his story collaborator Shaye Ogbonna, a Black male writer,...

"Out here things are a little different... Most folks handle this sort of thing amongst themselves." IFC Films has unveiled the first official trailer for God's Country, an indie Neo-Western thriller from filmmaker Julian Higgins. This first premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and it earned some rave reviews, despite mostly flying under the radar during the festival. The title is a reference to the land which it takes place on - Thandiwe Newton plays Sandra Guidry, a Black professor living and working in a rural town in the snowy lands of the American West. When this grieving college professor confronts two hunters that she catches trespassing on her property, she's drawn into an escalating battle of wills with catastrophic consequences for all. It's a remarkably tense thriller with some exceptional cinematography, but most of all a towering, magnificent performance from Newton. The indie cast features Jeremy Bobb,...

Thandiwe Newton ventures to the frosted depths of the forest in IFC Films’ “God’s Country,” inspired by James Lee Burke’s short story “Winter Light.” In the film, Newton portrays Sandra Guidry, a college professor living in a rural town while grieving the recent loss of her mother. On the day of the funeral, Sandra finds a mysterious truck parked in her driveway that belongs to hunters looking to hunt on her property. Sandra is soon drawn into a battle of escalating wills in the Western-set thriller.

In The Girl From Plainville, Kai Lennox stars as David Carter, father to Elle Fanning's Michelle Carter.
It's a gripping and tragic tale of two ordinary teens who cling to each other like life rafts to weather the teen angst that threatens them daily.
In this case, they do not buoy each other, as Conrad Roy, a boy with whom Michelle has an online relationship, commits suicide, which she urges.
We had a chance to talk with Kai to get his perspective on the tough role and the compassionate way the story unfolds.
Hi, Kai. It's so nice to meet you.
Nice to meet you as well. Thanks for speaking with me.
Absolutely. I really, as much as you can enjoy a series like The Girl From Plainville, I enjoyed the experience of watching it, shall we say.
Oh, good.
It's definitely not an enjoyable story.
Yeah. I know.

‘The Girl From Plainville’ Is a Discomfiting Digital Age Tragedy Elevated by Elle Fanning: TV Review
Hulu’s new limited series “The Girl From Plainville,” which premiered at the SXSW festival on March 12, faces, and surmounts, an interesting challenge: Its two lead characters have a relationship based almost entirely on text messages. The sight of someone with their face buried in a phone is hardly novel, nor is it compelling — at least not enough to sustain an eight-episode drama.
The question of whether “The Girl From Plainville,” based on the real-life manslaughter trial of Michelle Carter after she encouraged her boyfriend over text to kill himself in 2014, really needed all of those episodes to tell its story is a fair one. Like many streaming dramas, it feels stretched thin. But its depiction of the virtual relationship between Carter (Elle Fanning) and Coco Roy (Colton Ryan) will keep viewers hanging on, if only just. The pair appear to one another as if they were really present, having an ongoing conversation.

The upcoming Hulu series “The Girl from Plainville” re-examines the infamous texting-suicide case that rocked headlines in the mid 2010s.
Elle Fanning leads the series, premiering March 29, as Michelle Carter, who was prosecuted in the case following the death of her boyfriend Conrad Roy III (Colton Ryan). The real-life court case was at the center of Jesse Barron’s 2017 Esquire article of the same name, and was captured in the 2019 HBO documentary “I Love You, Now Die.”
The Massachusetts-set Hulu saga revisits Carter’s alleged abusive behavior, encouragement, and persuasion that was thought to have led to 18-year-old Roy’s suicide.
A first-look trailer shows Fanning as Carter copping to thousands of “messed-up texts” that seemed to “encourage” Conrad to take his life. Per Hulu, the series explores Carter’s relationship with Roy, the events that led to his death, and later, her trial and conviction of involuntary manslaughter. Chloë Sevigny...

When the story of Michelle Carter’s 2014 texting suicide case hit the came into the national spotlight, nearly every aspect of her personal life came under a microscope – including her fascination with the Fox hit musical series Glee.
For The Girl From Plainville, Hulu’s dramatic treatment of the suicide case, getting the rights to feature Glee was “vital” to digging deeper into Michelle Carter’s personality and the chain of events that ultimately led to the death of Conrad Roy, the series’ executive producers said during a TCA panel on Tuesday.

A few thrillers have premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival that feature vulnerable and underestimated women, but none of them carry the quiet, enigmatic power of Thandiwe Newton in God’s Country, a frigid neo-western that moves glacially but thoughtfully through topics of class, race, and gender. As Sandra, a college professor living alone with her dog in the vast Montana wilderness, Newton exudes a gravitational force, carrying a stern and inscrutable countenance that her character will eventually use to her advantage in an ongoing dispute with two white men. In a pocket of the country that feels lawless and bitterly divided, Sandra is unafraid to begin a vindictive war of escalation, even if it means stripping away everything important in her life.

The premise of “God’s Country” paints the proverbial “two Americas” with the broadest possible brushstrokes, pitting a Black, female humanities professor against two white guys in a red pickup truck. Nobody mentions who they voted for, but the preconceived notions write themselves. Yet the film digs deeper with each passing scene, subverting our first impressions of each character before letting them prove they are exactly who we thought they were. Julian Higgins’ excellent film constantly dangles redemption in front of our faces, begging us to imagine a better world, but ultimately delivers a stark reminder of how bitterly divided the country is.

‘God’s Country’ Review: Thandiwe Newton Anchors a Thriller of Escalating Disputes in Big Sky Country
Race, class and cultural divides are probed with intriguing understatement in “God’s Country.” Julian Higgins’ first feature can be taken as a drama with thriller elements or a low-key thriller with atypical dramatic nuance, working either way as a quietly effective balance between genre, social issue and character study elements. Based on a James Lee Burke story, it stars Thandiwe Newton as a college professor whose fish-out-of-water status in rural Montana is exacerbated when she runs afoul of trespassing working-class hunters. Too modest in scope and impact to be a major breakout title, this Sundance premiere should nonetheless attract streaming outlets and other home-format providers.
The screenplay by Higgins and Shaye Ogbonna is a “western” in that it’s on the laconic side verbally, at least most of the time. Thus it’s a while before we realize that the loved one Sandra Guidry (Newton) buries at the start is her long-ailing mother,...

This The Walking Dead: World Beyond review contains spoilers.
The Walking Dead: World Beyond Episode 8
The implications of Silas killing his father have followed the character around during his journey on The Walking Dead: World Beyond. Throughout his arc in the first season, that hint of violence, potential or actualized, has been the thing Hal Cumpston has projected most strongly. Not threatening, per se—Silas has never looked like a direct threat to anyone, shrinking back rather than using his size to menace—but fear. Silas is afraid of himself in a way the other characters are not, and that hints more strongly than his zombie-bashing fugue state that he’s done some Very Bad Things. These haven’t been explicitly detailed, just hinted around with almost subliminal flashbacks, until this week, where the whole bloody affair is revealed in full.
The episode is divided pretty distinctly between two running plot threads.

From the looks of the latest featurette that dropped for Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room, The Ain’t Rights are in for an unforgettable night. The film has already experienced a small rollout in New York and Los Angeles and will have a wider release this Friday, April 29th.
Synopsis: “Green Room is a brilliantly crafted and wickedly fun horror-thriller starring Patrick Stewart as a diabolical club owner who squares off against an unsuspecting but resilient young punk band. Down on their luck punk rockers The Ain’t Rights are finishing up a long and unsuccessful tour and are about to call it quits when they get an unexpected booking at an isolated, run-down club deep in the backwoods of Oregon. What seems merely to be a third-rate gig escalates into something much more sinister when they witness an act of violence backstage that they weren’t meant to see.

Those of you who have seen Jeremy Saulnier’s previous movie Blue Ruin know just how talented a filmmaker he is. Now, with Green Room, he has doubled down on his mastery and upending of genre. This is a ridiculously entertaining thriller that doubles down on the blood, guts, and carnage, but never seems excessive. This is as close to art house as this sort of an affair can get. Saulnier is going to be an independent film rock star if he keeps this up, plain and simple. Green Room, opening this weekend, is a slightly more commercial flick than Blue Ruin, but both movies are singular experiences from a director to be reckoned with. The film is a thriller that mostly takes place within the confined space of a punk rock club. A band, led by Pat (Anton Yelchin) and consisting of Sam (Alia Shawkat), among others, gets booked...

One week out from its theatrical debut and A24 (via Machinima) has unleashed a grisly red band trailer for Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room and boy, it doesn’t pull any punches.
In fact, the bloody sizzle reel does does stray into spoiler territory, so if you’re of the mindset that you want to go into Saulnier’s thriller with a relatively blank slate – a tactic we strongly recommend – then we’d actually advise against watching today’s new snippet.
Steeped in a particular brand of horror, Green Room follows down-on-their-luck punk rock band The Ain’t Rights who, coming off the back of a miserable tour, find themselves in a backwoods dive bar headed up by Patrick Stewart’s gleefully evil owner, Darcy Banker.
Without spoiling too much, things go from bad to worse to flat-out horrifying before long, and the titular Green Room quickly becomes the only safe haven for the band.

If you ask any band, they'll have a story about the one night that went wrong, or the gig that went awry. Widely regarded as one of the best-liked actors in the business, to say that Patrick Stewart is playing against type in today’s green band trailer for Jeremy Saulnier’s Green Room would be something of an understatement.
