Before we bid yet another month adieu, we do have one final round of horror and sci-fi home media releases to look forward to before we head right into August in just a few days. Scream Factory is keeping busy this week with their new releases of Thir13en Ghosts and Stephen King’s Graveyard Shift and Severin Films is resurrecting Revenge of the Living Dead Girls this Tuesday as well. If you haven’t had a chance to catch up with it, HBO is releasing the first season of The Outsider (another King story!) on both Blu and DVD, and Universal is set to haunt homes everywhere with You Should Have Left as well.
Other releases for July 28th include The Other Lamb, James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction, Dead Dicks, and Old Dracula.

As Hollywood horror slowly drowns in a mire of teen friendly remakes, over the last few years, it is arguably the French who have given genre addicts their much needed fixes, including such gruesome gems as “Switchblade Romance”, “Frontiers” and “Inside”. Following these comes “Martyrs”, from “House of Voices” writer director Pascal Laugier, which has been one of the most talked about horror films in years, gathering praise and shocked awe from festivals around the world. Controversial and challenging, it is easy to see why the film has been grabbing so much attention, though perhaps less easy to understand why it has apparently been picked up for a needless Us makeover. The film now arrives on UK DVD via Optimum, and comes with several extras including a making of featurette and interviews with Laugier and make up artist Benoit Lestang. Without wishing to give away too much of the plot,...

Beginning October 2, the Sitges Festival Internacional de Catalunya 2008 was a sun-drenched 10-day fiesta teeming with talent and terror. Every major genre movie of current note was on show in the picturesque Spanish resort town’s veteran festival, which surprised organizers Angel Sala and Mike Hostench by equaling last year’s record-breaking figures—especially as this 41st edition took place against the gloomiest of economic backdrops.
But as Sala pointed out in his speech at the closing awards ceremony, people need to escape to fantasy/horror cinema more than ever in such trying times. And Sitges certainly put the credit-crunch blues on hold for anyone attending the numerous gala events. Like the two Surprise Movies: Ponyo On The Cliff By The Sea, genius animator Hayao Miyazaki’s delightful reworking of the “Little Mermaid” fairy tale, and Michael Doughtery’s nice and nasty Trick ’R Treat (pictured above). The latter was a...

It always pains me to have to do a story about a horror personality who is no longer with us, but it’s that much worse when the person is gone of their own hand. Such was the case with French effects man Benoit Lestang, who reportedly committed suicide over the weekend.
His name may not be too familiar to you, but his work certainly is. Lestang was the lead effects artist on films ranging from Tell No One to City of Lost Children; from Brotherhood of the Wolf to The Diving Bell and Butterfly and most recently he did the effects for the French horror film Martyrs.
We here at Dread are sad to see him go and offer up our best wishes to Benoit’s friends and family.

Some very sad news here, passed out way by regular Twitch reader grozilla. French special effects artist Benoit Lestang died over the weekend, reportedly by suicide. And while you may not know Lestang’s name you certainly know his work. He was the lead effects artist on Pascal Laugier’s Martyrs and other notable porjects on his extensive resume include Tell No One, City of Lost Children, Sheitan, Babyblood, Brotherhood of the Wolf, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, Manderlay, Arsene Lupin and many, many more. Lestang was one of the leading effects men in the world and his influence will be missed.
