When I was out west last month for the Critics Choice/Golden Globe awards weekend, I spent an afternoon at Sony Pictures Imageworks, the Burbank-based animation and visual effects studio. My host was Don Levy, a veteran publicist now serving as the senior vice president of communications for Sony Pictures Digital Productions, who was kind enough to provide me with a behind-the-scenes look at the studio’s operations, generally (including a glimpse at some of their animators hard at work on the 2011 releases “The Smurfs” and “Arthur Christmas”), and the studio’s contributions to Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” specifically (with the help of David Schaub, the studio’s animation director, and Ralph Cooley, a video editor). Litte more than a week after my visit, Schaub, Sean Phillips, Ken Ralston, and Carey Villegas were nominated for the best visual effects Oscar for their work on the film.
