Have you ever wondered about the intricate behind-the-scenes dynamics that can influence the trajectory of a TV show and the careers of those involved? Such is the tale of how Marisa Tomei—known to many as the heartwarming Aunt May in the MCU—faced a fork in her path to stardom after a brief but impactful stint on NBC’s A Different World.
As a vibrant Hillman College student, Maggie Lauton, Tomei made a brief appearance in the debut season before a provocative storyline led to her unceremonious exit. Debbie Allen, who assumed the producer’s mantle from season two onward, had ambitious plans for exploring Tomei’s character.

If we're to accept "Star Trek" as a workplace drama -- which it may be first and foremost -- then one of the central themes of the entire franchise would be an examination of healthy managerial styles. Captain Kirk (William Shatner) was a manager who ran on instinct and preferred to have a hand in most decisions. He listened to the instincts of his crew as well, when it pertained to their fields of expertise, but listened to himself first and foremost. Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), in contrast, was more socially cold -- he rarely socialized with his crew during off-duty hours -- but was far more egalitarian when it came to communicating with his senior staff; Picard frequently asked for suggestions from his crew when they were embroiled in a crisis, and he often took their advice (unless they were Worf).

This post contains minor spoilers for the "Star Trek: Lower Decks" episode "The Inner Fight."
Throughout the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," audiences have seen a mysterious white UFO, its motivations unknown, cruising about the galaxy attacking and destroying numerous alien vessels. Details about this UFO have slowly been revealed throughout the season, but its true secret remains. Who is flying it and why is it attacking non-Federation ships?
In the latest episode, called "The Inner Fight," it is also revealed that the UFO may be targeting specific Starfleet officers, again for reasons unknown. Captain Freeman (Dawnn Lewis) notes that one of the potential targets may be Dr. Beverly Crusher, once the chief medical officer on the U.S.S. Enterprise. Lieutenant Boimler (Jack Quaid), being intimately familiar with Starfleet history, immediately begins to geek out. He will get to meet the Dr. Beverly Crusher? He is giddy just at the possibility.

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" has gained a reputation for taking some bold swipes and making plenty of affectionate jokes at the expense of some of the silliest moments in the "Trek" franchise. And with over 50 years of canon, well, there's no shortage of easy targets and deep-cut references to focus on in any given episode. In essence, it's precisely the kind of comedic material that could only come from the minds of the biggest nerds and most adoring fans out there, which the writers so obviously are. Talk about rags to riches. Once considered a blight on "Star Trek" with their introduction in "The Next Generation," the Ferengi have come a long way since an inauspicious appearance that even veteran "Trek" actor Armin Shimerman once called a "disaster." Originally conceived as an alien species that would pose a Klingon-like threat, the distinctive and prominently earlobed characters received a much-needed overhaul throughout "Deep Space Nine," where they were reimagined as a more comedic, profit-hungry, and staunchly capitalist society that functioned as a dark reflection of everything that the "socialist utopia" of Starfleet stands for. That's what makes it all the more meaningful that "Lower Decks" has now dedicated an entire episode to the fan-favorite Ferengi and, more importantly, the post-"Deep Space Nine" whereabouts of their newest leader, Rom.

Over the course of four seasons, “Star Trek” animated series “Lower Decks” has seen its crew of lowly officers take on the worst jobs in all of Starfleet, the type of menial work that only those at the very bottom of the chain of command are asked to do. But in the show’s upcoming episode, the core four characters get an assignment that promises much nicer pleasures: a glorified bar crawl.

There's a serial killer -- in a manner of speaking -- on the loose in "Star Trek: Lower Decks." Ever since the concluding moments of the season 4 premiere, almost every episode has included a brief prologue centered on the lower decks crew of some doomed alien spaceship in the moments before encountering the same, mysterious object with a nasty attitude. The pattern has remained the same in each and every encounter: Upon confronting the strange vessel, each victimized ship has had to helplessly watch as the strange enemy fires up its weapons, inexplicably drains power from its intended target, and subsequently blasts them into pieces with shocking ease. So far, the kill list has included several classic "Trek" species like Klingons, Romulans, and now Orions, with no end in sight.

The fourth episode of the fourth season of "Star Trek: Lower Decks," called "Something Borrowed, Something Green," sees Lieutenant Boimler (Jack Quaid) and Lieutenant Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) sharing a dorm. In previous seasons, when the characters were merely ensigns, they slept in bunks in a hallway. They now have an enclosed private room for the first time, a wrinkle that soon has the two at each other's throats. Notably, they have come to blows over which of them gets to mist the room's adorable bonsai tree. Low-stakes animosity immediately forms. To make matters worse, Boimler's and Rutherford's respective holodeck hours have been double-booked, and they will have to share the day's recreation time together as well.
Curiously, both Boimler and Rutherford enter the holodeck dressed as Mark Twain, eager to spend a few quiet hours on an old-timey Mississippi riverboat. Affecting Twainian accents, the two begin by hurling insults, but...

Sadly, Tendi drops O'Connor's ritual gong during his crucial, final ritual and ruins his mandala to catch it. His ascension is stymied. He wanted to be seen as the only "spirituality guy" on the ship, and now that status is ruined.

It’s all about beginnings and endings in the Season 2 finale of “Minx.” The 1970s-set comedy from Ellen Rapoport starring Ophelia Lovibond as the idealistic editor of a popular women’s magazine ends its triumphant sophomore outing with an episode that attempts to reset the status quo.
After a season that saw the titular magazine become an international sensation at the cost of its employees’ happiness, the finale (now streaming on Starz) sees Joyce (Lovibond), who spent most of the eight-episode season buying into her own manufactured hype, finally take action against the demanding and opinionated Constance (Emmy nominee Elizabeth Perkins), the wealthy widow who came on board to finance the magazine. Unfortunately for Joyce and the rest of the staff, Constance has also made Doug (fan favorite Jake Johnson) an offer he can’t refuse, sparking interpersonal drama and setting the show up for a dramatic third season (should...

When Star Trek: Lower Decks premiered in the summer of 2020 — so long ago that its streaming home at the time was called CBS All Access, rather than Paramount+ — it seemed caught between two potentially incompatible goals. On the one hand, the animated series, run by Mike McMahan, wanted to satirize all of the most ridiculous ideas the Star Trek franchise had introduced since the mid-20th century. And on the other, it wanted to tell genuine, thrilling Star Trek stories, set a decade or so after the events of the various Nineties spinoffs.

This article contains spoilers for the "Star Trek: Lower Decks" season 4 premiere.
No-win scenarios, moral debates, ethical dilemmas -- there's hardly a single philosophical argument or weighty concern that "Star Trek" has ever shied away from throughout the thoughtful sci-fi franchise's five-plus decades of existence. That's not to say they've all been handled equally or with consistent levels of success, mind you. For every sobering lesson learned by Kirk and Spock in "The Original Series" or patented Jean-Luc Picard speech summing up the poignant themes at the end of an episode of "The Next Generation" or the far more murky politics of "Deep Space Nine," there have been instances like the most notorious episode of "Star Trek: Voyager" to ever air: the great Tuvix controversy, which "Lower Decks" lovingly lampoons -- and, arguably, even justifies -- in its entertaining season 4 premiere.

"Futurama" has never been shy about tackling current events and season 11 is no different. Fresh off satirizing Amazon and online shopping two episodes ago, the series' latest episode — "Rage Against The Vaccine" — is about the Covid-19 pandemic.
In this episode, Planet Earth (and Planet Express) deal with the outbreak of a new virus, dubbed Explovid-23. The virus, spread through nebulous means, apparently originates from the Sewer Mutants. Quarantining the sewers doesn't contain it, though, because Leela (Katey Sagal) was visiting her parents and becomes a superspreader when she returns to the surface.
Half the episode is Hermes (Phil Lamarr), convinced the virus is a form of zombie-ism, trying to find a cure with Voodoo. The other half is Covid jokes, several of them centered around the show's resident scientist, Professor Farnsworth (Billy West). I wouldn't say all these jokes are home runs, but (or even because) they'll be familiar to...

The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Harry Shearer (“The Simpsons”) was the former category’s first champion, having been nominated once before for the same series.
The 2023 Best Character Voice-Over ballot consists of 148 performances, which is down by 74 from last year. Seeking her third victory is Maya Rudolph, who plays Connie the Hormone Monstress on “Big Mouth.” Also in the mix are former winners Shearer, Hank Azaria (“The Simpsons”), Alex Borstein (“Family Guy”), and Seth MacFarlane (“Family Guy”).

This The Simpsons review contains spoilers.
The Simpsons Season 34 Episode 14
The Simpsons presents an educational coming-of-middle-age story in “Carl Carlson Rides Again,” with both the character and the series looking for love, and finding an identity. The opening sequence moves very fast, skipping the couch gag, to get to the love story. But the initial scam is a Homer special, and quite delicious in its benevolent malice of forethought. It should come with free hats. It is better, however, that it is dropped quickly, because a subplot would have overburdened the episode.
Homer’s envisioning of a “breakfast meal train” is a classic aside, and Marge’s attempts to make him stop stroking the chin harken back to the silliness of older episodes. But Carl’s journey is a serious one, and Alex Désert finds his voice in the episode. This is the most lines he’s gotten in his run on the series,...

It wasn’t so much mic-drop moments that The Voice teed up Tuesday as “Drop the mic on your way out” moments. Following Monday’s Live Playoffs (recapped here), Season 22’s Top 16 was whittled down to the lucky Top 13, with two contestants per team saved by viewer votes, one per team saved by their coach and the remaining foursome vying for the Wildcard Instant Save.

"Star Trek: Lower Decks" recently concluded its third season, and the show has definitely found a groove. Initially presented as a crass, slapstick comedy show, "Lower Decks" quickly revealed itself to be deeply respectful of "Star Trek" philosophy. The show openly understands that its four main characters, while low-ranking and not well-respected, are still principled, sophisticated characters capable of growth and reflection. "Lower Decks" doesn't want to be "'Star Trek' with fart jokes." It wants to be "Star Trek."
At the outset of the series, Ens. Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome) was a brash, motor-talking blowhard who deliberately talked back to the deeply entrenched formalism of the franchise. She was, at first glance, an avatar for a cynical modern audiences unwilling to engage with "Star Trek" any longer. Just as the show evolved, though, so too did Mariner, finding that she still loves breaking rules, but also that she...

"Star Trek" famously takes place in a post-capitalist society. Starfleet officers receive no paychecks, and their shifts are dictated by their stamina rather than their monetary benefits. Several times throughout "Star Trek: The Next Generation," characters from the 20th or 21st centuries appear on the Enterprise to be told in no uncertain terms that money is a thing of the past. In "Star Trek: First Contact," Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) states it plainly: "We work to better ourselves." In terms of trade, "Star Trek" seems to operate entirely on barter (if resources are limited) or on generosity (if they are not). Ships trade medical supplies, equipment, or fuel, for instance.
(Of course, the franchise's post-capitalism runs into a notable snag when the Federation encounters worlds that still operate using monetary trade. Although never explicitly stated, a Trekkie may glean that the Federation has the resources to acquire or even produce money/credits/gold-pressed latinum,...
