- One adopted child, born John Dominis Aimoku (b.1883), was the illegitimate son of John Owen Dominis, her husband, later the Prince Consort of the Hawaiian Islands, by his mistress Mary Purdy Lamiki Aimoku. John Owen Dominis died in 1891, and John Dominis Aimoku was subsequently adopted in 1910 by Queen Liliuokalani, who upon adoption, changed his name to John Aimoku Dominis.

- Ascended the throne as queen of the Hawaiian Islands on January 29, 1891, and reigned until she was deposed on January 17, 1893. She was the only queen regnant and the last monarch of the Hawaiian Islands.
- Attended the Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria in 1887 as part of the official Hawaiian delegation. She received an official audience with Victoria at Buckingham Palace.
- In 1909, she unsuccessfully sued the United States under the Fifth Amendment seeking the return of the Hawaiian Crown Lands. She did, however, receive a lifetime pension of $1,250.
- Served as regent for her brother Kalakaua twice, in for ten months in 1881 and for three months in 1890-91, while he was traveling overseas. He died abroad in San Francisco, and Liliuokalani did not learn of her ascension until nine days later.
- She was forced to abdicate the Hawaiian throne in 1895, two years after being deposed. Several of her supporters had been arrested during an unsuccessful rebellion earlier that year and were sentenced to hang, and the Hawaiian authorities offered to release them if she abdicated. She later wrote that she would have chosen death for herself instead of abdicating, but she would not let her supporters die for her.
