Anyone in the biz knows that the true representation of a movie critic has never been seen in mass media. Sitting in the dark before racing to make an embargo-break deadline, then kvetching online about weak third acts? Brad Pitt material, all of it.
Luckily, Quentin Tarantino’s next project may fix all that. Deadline reported that a deal is imminent for the director and star to reunite for Tarantino’s next and (allegedly) final picture, “The Movie Critic.” Pitt won Best Supporting Actor at the 2020 Oscars for his turn in Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” which also won Best Production Design for Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh, plus eight other nominations, including Best Picture. The two also worked together on “Inglorious Basterds.”

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” and “Asteroid City” all earned nominations from the Critics Choice Awards for Best Production Design. That bodes well for each film’s Oscar chances this year. But before we get too ahead of ourselves by predicting who might win this category, let’s take a look back at the last 10 Oscar winners for Best Production Design.
We’re going to take a look at the academy’s tastes here to see what type of films in what type of setting they nominate most. Then, we’ll try to apply those findings to this year’s race as we scrutinize the movies hoping for a nomination in this design category. Here we go.
These 10 winners seem like totally different movies but a closer look does show some similarities. Firstly, seven out of the 10 are set in the real world. “The Shape of Water...

Below-the-line categories at the Oscars just don’t get the attention they deserve. The artistry on display helps to bring to life a movie. Visual effects are such a key part of the storytelling of “A New Hope.” Costume design is vital to the storytelling of “Phantom Thread.” And production design is so key in “Parasite,” “Avatar,” and “The Lord of the Rings” in so many different ways.
With that in mind, let’s take a look a closer look at some of the below-the-line categories, starting here with Best Production Design. We’re going to look at the last 10 winners in this category to work out if there is a pattern in the way the academy awards certain winners. They love biopics in the acting categories, for example, so what are they partial to in Production Design? Take a look at the below chart.

At the climax of Joel Schumacher's 1995 film "Batman Forever," the title hero (Val Kilmer) treks out to a foreboding island where the Riddler (Jim Carrey) is hiding out with an infernal machine and a kidnapping victim. He flies there in his Batwing airplane, while Robin (Chris O'Donnell) follows in a newly built Batboat, a ridged, H.R. Giger-like hydrofoil with an enormous bat tail. Batman and Robin stand next to the Boat for one scene as Robin gets in. In the following scene, Two-Face (Tommy Lee Jones) misfires missiles at the Batboat from the Riddler's home base, handily blowing it up. It was on screen for maybe two minutes. Why take a Batboat at all?
The cynicism within all of us will instantly point out that the Batboat was included in "Batman Forever" for purely commercial reasons; it was clearly an excuse for Warner Bros. to market one additional...

“Sex is not part of my vision of cinema,” Oscar-winning writer-director Quentin Tarantino said in an interview with a Spanish news outlet (as per EW). And now that we think about it, no, there aren’t too many scenes of lovemaking in the auteur’s oeuvre.
There is no shortage of buff dudes (Brad Pitt removing his shirt in “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood” received a round of applause at its New York press premiere) and fetching young women (have you seen “Death Proof”?) but, yeah, not really any “sex scenes” per se.
“It’s a pain to shoot sex scenes, everyone is very tense,” he said, adding, “If it was already a bit problematic to do it before, now it is even more so. If there had ever been a sex scene that was essential to the story,...

The Hollywood Reporter broke news on Tuesday night about Quentin Tarantino’s next project. The trade’s sources say that the two-time Oscar winner, who turns 60 later this month, has finished a script and hopes to start shooting this autumn. The title is “The Movie Critic,” it is set in Los Angeles in the late 1970s and has a female lead.
That’s all that’s known for certain (and even this remains unconfirmed by Tarantino), but that didn’t stop many from theorizing. Over the decades, Tarantino has made his affection for critic Pauline Kael known. In the late 1970s, Kael held, for a short time, a position within Paramount Pictures (brought in at Warren Beatty’s suggestion) and that certainly could be the focal point of the project.
Keep in mind, however, that when word first broke about “Once Upon a Time … in Hollywood,” initial chit-chat was that...

When you have an international best seller that was on the Nyt list for 42 weeks and then made into a multi-Oscar-nominated Swedish film that became the third-most successful in the history of that country Ingmar Bergman called home, you might wonder what the need was for an English-language American remake. The answer is a chance to give Tom Hanks a role he can run with and, more important, to bring a very human, often funny, character-driven story back to light in a time that needs it more than ever.

Cinemas are just reopening, but two-time Oscar winner Quentin Tarantino has the No. 1-selling book on Amazon with his Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: A Novel, which just dropped today.
The 400-page paperback expands on the story Tarantino laid down in his 2019 movie, which went on to be the second-highest-grossing film of his career with $375 million worldwide after Django Unchained‘s $426 million. It also was nominated for 10 Oscars, including Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay for the filmmaker, winning Best Supporting Actor for Brad Pitt and Best Production Design for Barbara Ling and Nancy Haigh’s re-creation of 1969 Los Angeles. One of the plots Tarantino’s novelization further details is the backstory of Pitt’s stuntman Cliff Booth and whether he killed his wife — a dark cloud that followed his career in the movie.

Quentin Tarantino’s lavish reimagining of the events surrounding Sharon Tate’s murder lends a fairy tale glow to a real-life tragedy. Brad Pitt gives a career-best performance as a stuntman reduced to glorified gofer for the often-pickled and soon-to-be has-been actor played to a T by Leonardo DiCaprio. Due to Barbara Ling’s phenomenal production design, 1969’s Hollywood is alive again—and so is Sharon, thanks to Margot Robbie’s bittersweet turn as the sunny starlet.

Following a pattern that is very clearly emerging now, the Critics’ Choice Awards is adjusting its dates to reflect changes the Motion Picture Academy announced earlier this week for Oscar season. The Critics’ Choice Awards for Movies and Television will now take place at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, and again be hosted by Taye Diggs airing on the CW Network Sunday March 7.
Eligibility for movies will also follow the Academy’s lead and now will include all films released between January 1, 2020, and February 28, 2021. TV eligibility remains solely for programs first seen in 2020 only.
“Now more than ever, people are turning to film and television as a source of comfort, as a means of education, and as a way to connect,” said Critics’ Choice Association CEO Joey Berlin. “With the revised timeline, we are looking forward to celebrating all of the brilliant new work created during this extended season.”

Following the news that the 2021 Oscars have been pushed pack two months to April 25, the Critics Choice Association has postponed the 2021 Critics Choice Awards to March 7.
The show, which honors both television and film work, is still being planned as live event at the Barker Hanger in Santa Monica, Calif., “health considerations permitting,” the organization said in a statement on Thursday.
Taye Diggs will return as host for the third consecutive year. The ceremony will be broadcast live on The CW Network.

Every time I’ve wandered into a department store in the past decade or so, I inevitably run into a display of sassy, glittering shirts emblazoned with aggressively empowering phrases — “Feminist,” “Girl Boss,” “The Future Is Female” — aimed at teenagers and millennial women like me. Corporate feminism like this tends to smooth the edges off the movement’s radicalism by frantically waving pink pompoms in our faces, turning the idea of “girl power” into an aesthetic. It’s not overall a terrible thing to promote encouraging messages in the name of equality, or something like it. But one side effect of being so blatantly pandered to, with the endgame of getting us to buy what they’re selling, is a bone-deep, irritated exhaustion.
This is how I felt watching the Oscars this year. It was nice, in theory, for Steve Martin and Chris Rock to acknowledge the fact that women...

The 92nd Oscars featured a mix of the expected and the unexpected Sunday, with Neon’s South Korean film Parasite capping the evening by winning Best Picture, making history as the first foreign-language film ever to take the marquee prize.
Parasite director and co-writer Bong Joon Ho made four trips to the Dolby Theater stage, with the film also winning for Directing, Original Screenplay and International Feature.
Other honorees who spent this compressed Oscar season honing their acceptance speeches for tonight were the four Acting winners — all of whom won as expected. That meant statuettes for Joaquin Phoenix (Leading Actor for Joker), Renee Zellweger (Leading Actress for Judy), Brad Pitt (Supporting Actor for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) and Laura Dern (Supporting Actress for Marriage Story).

Neon’s film Parasite made Oscar history by becoming the first foreign language film to win Best Picture during the 92nd Academy Awards. Nominated for six Oscars, the film walked away on Sunday night with four Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best International Feature and Best Original Screenplay.
Directed by Bong Joon Ho, Parasite previously won the Palme d’Or at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival as well as top honors at the Screen Actors Guild Awards for Outstanding Performance by a Cast.
Only 11 international feature films have ever been nominated in the Best Picture category. Bong Joon Ho became the first South Korean to ever win the best director Oscar.
During his acceptance speech he said, “When I was young and studying cinema, there was a saying that I carved deep into my heart, which is “the most personal is the most creative.

Though it lost Best Picture, “1917,” Sam Mendes’ single-shot, World War I extravaganza, was rewarded with the most crafts Oscars Sunday night. For its technical virtuosity it received three awards, powered by cinematographer Roger Deakins’ second win for his brilliant camera choreography.
Deakins was joined by the sound mixing team of Mark Taylor and Stuart Wilson for their intricate soundscape as part of the continuous-shot narrative, and, surprisingly, Mpc Film (the dark horse winner) for VFX. Ironically, though, Mpc’s win overshadowed its own innovative virtual production and photoreal animation on Jon Favreau’s “The Lion King.” Yet this supporting visual effects work played an integral role in making stitches invisible and creating CG environments (including No Man’s Land and the burning village of Écoust).
Meanwhile, Pixar won its 10th animated feature Oscar for “Toy Story 4,” and “Hair Love,” the black father-daughter bonding work, took home the animated short Oscar.

Women had another record-breaking night at this year’s Oscars, accounting for one-third of the awards handed out on Sunday night.
Across the 24 categories, 13 women and 26 men took home statuettes this year, an uptick from the previous record set last year when women accounted for 27.8% of the 54 winners. The team that created 1969 Los Angeles for Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took home the Oscar for production design Sunday at the Academy Awards.
The award marked the first win for production designer Barbara Ling and the second for set decorator Nancy Haigh, who took home an Oscar in 1992 for Bugsy.
“We share this with our incredible art department,” Ling said on stage before praising Tarantino.
Haigh then thanked the rest of the production design team. “A huge shoutout to all the people who helped put us here tonight,” she said, “the craftsmen, the construction guys, the painters, our prop master, Chris Call, and of course my gang, Mark and Sarah and Jonesy and Adam, and everybody, I appreciate it so much.”

Maya Rudolph just learned she has something in common with Beyoncé so naturally, she had to talk about it on the 2020 Oscars red carpet.
The 47-year-old comedian offset her orange sequin Valentino caftan with emerald and diamond Lorraine Schwartz earrings, which adorned the earlobes of Rudolph’s favorite diva mere months ago.
“I just found out Beyoncé wore them once and I like that….we like to share things,” Rudolph, who famously portrayed the music icon on Saturday Night Live several times, said during the ABC Oscars pre-show on Sunday.

Oscar nominees “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” were the big winners Saturday night at the 24th annual Art Directors Guild Awards (held at The InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown). Barbara Ling’s elegiac recreation of 1969 Hollywood beat Dennis Gassner’s innovative period work on Sam Mendes’ one-shot, World War I extravaganza “1917” for the period prize, while Lee Ha Jun’s extraordinary production design on Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” took contemporary honors. The wins for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” suggest they are not out of the running for the Production Design Oscar.
Oscar ballots are in voters hands, due Tuesday, February 4.
Meanwhile, “Avengers: Endgame” and “Toy Story 4 ” earned Adg awards for fantasy and animation.
Ling performed a 50-year facelift on Hollywood Blvd. and Westwood Village. The restoration included such bygone cultural fixtures as the Pussycat Theater, the psychedelic Aquarius Theatre (which opened “Hair” in 1968), and Peaches Records & Tapes.

Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” continued its run of top critics’ honors this season, scooping the Film of the Year and Director of the Year awards at the London Film Critics’ Circle kudos ceremony this evening. Quentin Tarantino’s earliest memory of Los Angeles was as a young boy visiting Grauman’s Chinese Theater, standing in the courtyard and looking at the handprints of John Wayne and Roy Rogers. He recollects the Mold-a-Rama machine outside that dispensed a souvenir wax pagoda if you inserted a quarter.
The director had toyed with re-creating that memory as the opening to his Oscar-nominated “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” He went so far as to have Barbara Ling, his production designer, track down the makers of the machine, but the idea never materialized. Instead, the film opens with black-and-white newsreel footage of Rick Dalton (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) and stuntman Cliff Booth (Brad Pitt), setting the scene for their coming exploits. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences was quick to point out on Jan. 13 as the Oscar nominations were announced, that “A record 62 women were nominated, almost one-third of this year’s nominees.” Twenty of those below-the-line nominations were for women and minorities, including Sandy Powell, who secured her 15th nomination for “The Irishman,” and “Jojo Rabbit” costume designer Mayes C. Rubeo, who landed her inaugural Oscar nomination and entered the history books as the first Latina to be nominated in the category.
Rubeo wanted to create a world filled with vibrant colors to reflect the idea that the film was shot from the perspective of a 10-year-old boy. Similarly, when she was re-creating Hitler’s uniform, Rubeo dressed Taika Waititi (who also adapted the screenplay and directed) in baggy riding pants because he was, after all, a figment of the boy’s imagination.

In the last 20 years, only three Best Picture winners have also won the Oscar for Best Production Design or Art Direction. Yet there’s a very good chance that it will happen again this year. That’s because all five production design nominees are so brilliantly effective in their world building, ranging from the period pieces “1917,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” “The Irishman,” and “Jojo Rabbit,” to the contemporary outlier, “Parasite.”
All five possess the two most important aspects of successful production design: innovation and story support, while, at the same time, dazzling us with period detail, cultural authenticity, and iconic style.
Without a doubt, though, the frontrunner is Dennis Gassner’s masterful work on Sam Mendes’ continuous-shot, World War I extravaganza, “1917,” which has grabbed momentum after its PGA and Golden Globe wins. It’s a strong season for period production design Oscar contenders, with Sam Mendes’ bold, continuous-shot, Word War I thriller, “1917,” as the frontrunner. It required production designer Dennis Gassner and the art department to make the intricate sets in precise accordance with the choreography of Roger Deakins’ tour de force camera work.
Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” masterfully explores class divide in Korea, boasting the season’s most elaborate production design work by designer Lee Ha Jun. The exquisite mansion serves as a central character; and the home’s vertical design expresses space and division, highlighted by wood, glass, and spare furniture.
Another standout is Barbara Ling’s work on Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.” She provides a 50-year facelift to Hollywood Blvd. and Westwood Village for Tarantino’s 1969 love letter to Tinseltown, and recreated the creepy Spahn Ranch in the San Fernando Valley for the Manson Family lair.

Above all the titles screening at the 35th Santa Barbara Intl. Film Festival, a 13-minute world premiere short stands as perhaps the ultimate example of the event’s goal of presenting films that balance local interests and global perspectives. Titled “Santa Barbara,” the short is about director Diana Markosian’s mother, who came to the coastal California town as a Russian mail-order bride after seeing the NBC soap opera of the same name.
“It was the first thing to be broadcast on Russian television following the fall of the Soviet Union,” says programming director Michael Albright.
The short — one of a record 4,000 feature and short films submitted this year — came in as a Russian sidebar was being planned. “There was this weird phenomenon where we were thinking about doing this section and this submission came in, sort of bringing it all together.”

Meanwhile, Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” each scored five nominations, while Taika Waititi’s “Jojo Rabbit” nabbed three along with James Mangold’s “Ford v Ferrari.” Bong Joon Ho’s “Parasite” and Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women” each came away with two nominations, and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story” was singled out for Randy Newman’s romantic score.
But “1917” provided the biggest tour de force crafts event of the season, with nominations for Roger Deakins’ uniquely orchestrated cinematography, Dennis Gassner’s exacting production design, Thomas Newman’s haunting score, the unusual sound editing and sound mixing, and, surprisingly, makeup and hairstyling and VFX.
However, the exclusion of “1917” editor Lee Smith (who won the...
