The idyllic dream of leftist commune living, where resources and skills are shared for the greater good, needs a key ingredient to work: people. Two decades after Lukas Moodysson’s Together captured such a Stockholm community, we return to the lives of those we last saw in the 1970s––or in 2000, if you’re going by the film’s release––and the commune is running on fumes, comprising only Göran (Gustaf Hammarsten) and sole companion Klasse (Shanti Roney). As we’re introduced to the two discussing various economics and chores of their rather lonely way of life, it’s as dryly hilarious an opening as one could dream of, but the Swedish director knows this small-scale conceit isn’t wholly sustainable. Soon enough, many familiar (and some new) faces return for our lead’s 60th birthday celebration in a reunion that, not unlike the similar gap in Twin Peaks, conjures questions of shattered ideals,...

Feeling a bit lonely, they start thinking of a reunion with old friends and Klasse sets off to surprise Göran on his birthday.

"There's no flaw in you." Neon has released the first official Us trailer for the "instant cult classic" Swedish film Border, originally titled Gräns, which originally premiered in Un Certain Regard at the Cannes Film Festival this summer. This was easily one of my favorite films of Cannes this year, an extra funky, wacky, ingenious, one-of-a-kind Swedish tale of love and monsters. Border is about a woman named Tina, played under heavy make-up by Eva Melander, who works as a customs agent, sniffing out sneaky people hiding things. One day she encounters a strange man who she's oddly attracted to, and they strike up a relationship leading to her learning the truth about herself. The cast includes Eero Milonoff, Jorgen Thorsson, Ann Petren, and Sten Ljunggren. This little film is so weird and funky, but so damn good. Nothing else like it. Here's the first official Us trailer (+ new poster) for Ali Abbasi's Border,...

A Swedish customs officer with a special talent for detecting contraband must ultimately choose between good and evil in the idiosyncratic thriller “Border,” an exciting, intelligent mix of romance, Nordic noir, social realism, and supernatural horror that defies and subverts genre conventions. Destined to be a cult classic, this absorbing second feature from Iran-born, Denmark-based director Ali Abbasi is based on a short story by “Let The Right One In” author John Ajvide Lindqvist, whose oeuvre and fandom is comparable to that of Stephen King and Anne Rice. Lindqvist also co-wrote the screenplay along with Abbasi and his Danish Film School colleague Isabella Eklöf. Neon has already snapped up the North American rights; other territories are going fast.
It’s almost impossible to write about “Border” without some spoilers, so those who want to preserve the thrill of discovery may want to stop reading here. The underlying themes are common...

Four More Years
Directed by Tova Magnusson-Norling
Written by Wilhelm Behrman
Four More Years, directed by Tova Magnusson-Norling, uses the tried and true romantic comedy formula to its complete advantage. Unlikely love interests, check. Falling-in-love montage, check. Inevitable misunderstanding leading to separation, check. Happy ending, well, you’ll have to see. All the romantic comedy staples are there. The result is genuinely romantic, touching and consistently hilarious.
Four More Years tells the story of David Holst, leader of the Swedish center-right Liberal Party. Though he is predicted by everyone to become Sweden’s new Prime Minister, he is defeated at the last second by the Social Democrats. While trying to salvage his own reputation and that of his party, David strikes up a friendship with the charming and openly gay Martin Kovac. Quickly moving from friendship to much more, the problems start to amass. The fact that David is already...

Director: Veiko Õunpuu Writer(s): Veiko Õunpuu Starring: Taavi, Eelmaa, Ravshana Kurkova, Tiina Tauraite, Sten Ljunggren The Temptation of St. Tony opens with death -- a funeral procession to be exact. Then, a car crash; which at first seems random and absurd, but in the grand scheme of this surrealist interlocking of events it’s significance is revealed when one of the survivors of the car crash drips blood on the immaculate interior of Tony’s (Taavi Eelmaa) new Mercedes Benz. This causes Tony to drive over a black dog, which prompts Tony to discover a stash of dismembered body parts, which delivers Tony to the local police department where he meets a mysterious woman (Ravshana Kurkova). The chain of events continues for nearly two hours... Tony, the frizzy-haired manager of a local factory, waxes to tremendous existential lengths about his -- and mankind’s -- reason for being.

It's time for part 2 in the sometimes series that I like to call Lists here at late Film, with today's rather titularly self-explanatory list coming luke warm off the heels of Fi's Fave Films! - An Alternative List. Back when late night TV was great here in the UK, I would avidly watch short films from the random showings on Channel 4 (some, such as Alison De Vere's The Black Dog, were regulars) to less random collections on Shooting Gallery. For as long as I've loved film, I've loved short film, for there is something so powerful and emotive in these short few minutes. Yes indeed, I loves me a short film, and here is my pick of top 5 fave's...
1. The Tale Of The Rat That Wrote (Billy O'Brien, 1999)
Anyone who knows me will tell you I just simply adore rodents, so it's probably unsurprising, then, that my favorite short would feature a rat.
