I heard the names of the trailblazers of Black film – Oscar and Lena and Paul and Hattie— long before I ever saw their work. I learned early on that despite the fact that Hollywood hadn’t been welcoming, Black people have been a part of American film since the dawn of the medium. What these pioneers accomplished and what they went through is endlessly fascinating. Their history is a privilege and a thrill to discover. But if we’re only reading the stories and looking at photos about Black filmmakers behind the scenes, the experience is incomplete. The art they made should be as well known as the change they brought.
Happily, more of these early works are now widely accessible. Hence the birth of IndieWire’s Black Pioneers Must-Watch List. This gallery captures some of the most memorable performances of pathbreaking actors and filmmakers from 1920 to 1950.

A former senior executive at Def Jam Recordings is suing the label’s co-founder Russell Simmons, alleging he raped her in 1997 and that was sexually harassed, assaulted and battered during their time working together.
The plaintiff identified only as Jane Doe claims her “career in the music industry was disrupted and derailed by a devastating experience at the hands of Mr. Simmons.” The lawsuit filed today in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York (read it here) labels the mogul “a rich and powerful celebrity whose wealth and influence allowed his abusive behavior to go unchallenged for decades.”
“While at first Mr. Simmons and Ms. Doe had a professional working relationship, Mr. Simmons revealed his true colors and, through his assaultive behavior, disabled Ms. Doe’s career at Def Jam, a job she loved, at the height of her success and financial viability,” reads the 18-page complaint.

The intent of THR‘s annual list of the 50 Most Powerful Showrunners is to provide an accurate state of the TV union — a rundown of the writer-producers selling in an increasingly fraught media climate, making culturally relevant and awards-friendly shows and serving the masses at a time when consensus entertainment has all but vanished. It’s also a great opportunity to pick some brains.
Those showrunners who made the 2023 list were polled on a variety of subjects. If Suits can become a streaming hit years after ending, what other shows deserve a similar fate? What IP are they dying to get their hands on? What’s already a pressing issue for the next WGA contract negotiation with the studios? And if they found themselves with a burner social media account, what would they do with it?
Here are some of the best answers to those and more questions.

After a blockbuster musical episode, “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” is closing out its second season in much more serious fashion. The sci-fi series’ season finale “Hegemony” will pit the crew of the USS Enterprise against a classic enemy of old. And in a first look at the finale, exclusively shared with IndieWire, it’s revealed that said enemy is one of the most dangerous in the “Star Trek” galaxy: the Gorn.
The Gorn, a race of hostile reptellian humanoid aliens, first appeared in “Arena,” one of the most iconic episodes of Gene Roddenberry’s science fiction series. In “Strange New Worlds,” the species appeared twice in the show’s first season: “Memento Mori,” where a Gorn military ship attacks the Enterprise, and “All Those Who Wonder,” where hatchlings from the species caused the death of Enterprise engineer Hemmer (Bruce Horak). The finale marks the first and only appearance of the species,...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds was a highly anticipated addition to the Star Trek franchise, and the first season of the show has certainly lived up to expectations. The show brings back the iconic characters of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), Science Officer Spock (Ethan Peck), and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) from the original series, and explores their adventures aboard the USS Enterprise.
One of the most striking things about Strange New Worlds is its commitment to capturing the spirit of the original Star Trek series. From the opening theme music to the brightly colored uniforms, every aspect of the show feels like a loving tribute to the franchise’s roots. The production design is particularly impressive, with the sets and costumes capturing the aesthetic of the 1960s while also feeling modern and updated.

Starfleet wants you!
That, or whatever the Federation’s recruiting slogan would be, is something you’ll hear over the next couple of years, as Paramount+ has given a series order to a new live-action show, “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy,” the streamer announced today just two days after confirming multi-season orders for “Strange New Worlds” and “Lower Decks.”
Paramount+ will not confirm this to be the case, but the “Starfleet Academy” series is likely a spinoff of “Star Trek: Discovery,” which will conclude in early 2024 with its fifth and final season. The speculation then is that it would be set in that show’s 32nd-century timeline. A Season 4 plotline on “Discovery,” in which Mary Wiseman’s Ensign Tilly served as the in-the-field instructor for a group of Academy cadets before leaving the show altogether to continue being their teacher, feels like a backdoor pilot.

Exclusive: Camila Cabello has found her next major acting gig on the heels of Prime Video’s Cinderella. The Cuban-born pop star has closed a deal to join Jay Will, Mary J. Blige and Chiwetel Ejiofor in Rob Peace — the drama Ejiofor is directing from his own script, as his sophomore feature effort.
The film, currently in production, is based on Jeff Hobbs’ bestselling biography The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace: A Brilliant Young Man Who Left Newark for the Ivy League. It follows Robert Peace (Will), a young man who grew up in a crime-ridden section of Newark, NJ and later graduated from Yale with degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry earned on scholarship. Peace led a dual life living in the insular world of academia and as a lab researcher of cancer and infectious diseases, while at the same time making six figures from the sale of marijuana.

Showtime got a little bit lucky with The Man Who Fell to Earth. The sci-fi drama took a title that means very little to modern audiences and a story that didn’t really require extending into a new era, but creators Jenny Lumet and Alex Kurtzman had a specific and contemporary tale they wanted to tell — and, in Chiwetel Ejiofor, a fully committed leading man giving a wild, hilarious, soulful central performance.
Perhaps owing to the arbitrary attempt to build around the title of a 1976 film (and a 1963 novel), The Man Who Fell to Earth doesn’t appear to have generated any buzz at all and Ejiofor didn’t even crack the outer edge of the Emmy conversation.
Showtime hasn’t even gotten that lucky with American Gigolo. David Hollander’s (Ray Donovan) continuation of Paul Schrader’s 1980 feature arrives facing two big...

Star Trek Day, September 8, commemorates the first Star Trek episode to air on U.S. television in 1966, an episode called "The Man Trap."
On this, the third annual celebration of Star Trek Day by Paramount+, the two-hour-long live-streamed event, was co-hosted by Tawny Newsome and Paul F. Tompkins.
In addition to announcements about the various series, the program included a loving tribute to Nichelle Nichols, who passed away on July 30 at the age of 89.
Newsome, of course, is also the voice of Ensign Beckett Mariner on Star Trek: Lower Decks, while Tompkins voices Dr. Migleemo and various other characters on the animated comedy.
The two also co-host the popular podcast Star Trek: The Pod Directive, which they were pleased to share -- as part of their hosting duties -- has been renewed for a third season.
