Prey! is not to be confused with the Predator film of the same name, Dick Maas’s lion loose in Amsterdam thriller, the 2007 film about a family of tourists stalked by lions or any of the seemingly endless list of action films and slashers bearing that title. This Prey! is about a pair of American missionaries Andrew and Sue living in a village somewhere in Africa.
Andrew is already having a bad day. He’s a doctor and had a young boy die on the operating table because the medical supplies they were expecting hadn’t arrived on time. It gets worse when he’s told he and Sue need to make a fast exit, Boko Haram soldiers are heading towards the village.

"I Know What You Did Last Summer" almost worked as a phantom wave for the neo-slasher genre, hitting theaters in the wake of Wes Craven's game changer "Scream," and sneaking in just a couple of months before "Scream 2" in October of 1997. Spawning an inferior sequel, a third entry called "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer" with an entirely new cast, and a recently canceled Prime Video series, the original film has stayed surprisingly relevant. Now, a legacy sequel is on the way with Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. in talks to return. Once again, the "Last Summer" franchise is capitalizing on the resurgent success of the "Scream" series, giving genre fans even more reason to get a little nostalgic for the late '90s horror craze.

After terrorizing the Dutch with a living elevator, a canal-dwelling slasher, and an evil Sinterklaas, rebellious filmmaker Dick Maas returned with a more natural kind of killer. The people of Amsterdam are not under attack by a mere animal; a displaced predator is on the prowl. The blood trail of Prooi (Prey) starts outside the city where a family is brutally slaughtered in the middle of the night. It doesn’t take more than a glimpse of the massacre before a local zoo veterinarian determines the culprit. A lion is on the loose, and it’s heading deeper and deeper into the concrete jungle.
When the Netherlands said they can’t compete with Hollywood movies, Maas set out to prove them wrong. And since then, the audacious auteur has succeeded — his brand of absurd and entertaining filmmaking is enjoyed by not only the Dutch but also the rest of the world.

Moloch opens in 1991 as a young girl feeding a mouse is frightened by the sounds of what sounds like an extremely violent attack in the room above her. Soon blood is raining from between the floorboards and pouring down the walls onto the terrified girl.
Thirty years later, Betriek is now grown up and has a daughter of her own, Hanna (Noor van der Velden). It was Betriek’s grandmother that we heard being killed in the prologue. Her father Roelof was traumatized by her death and still drunkenly waits for the killer to return. Her mother suffers from an unknown illness that subjects her to what seems to be seizures. Add in the death by heart attack of Hanna’s father and...

I’ve seen all manner of hideous, gruesome and bizarre monsters tearing people limb from limb on screen. So, with a bog-standard non-supernatural lion as the monster, can Uncaged really deliver the goods? The Dutch horror-comedy shows Amsterdam being menaced by a lion (that apparently just appears in town without explanation), with the city falling into a panic as its citizens are munched on by the ferocious and hungry beast.
Uncaged‘s trailer includes lines like “amazing how one lion can stop an entire city…,” “this isn’t just a lion…” and “the last thing I want is to turn Amsterdam into a hunting ground.” It also promises an action scene where a lion tears up a subway car, fights a Swat team and engages in a motorcycle chase.
Honestly, I doubt Uncaged is going to win any awards, but at minimum it looks like it’ll provide multiple scenes...

(And it's going to be called... Dick Maas: The Documentary) In my home country of the Netherlands, there are plenty of people and filmmakers who are interested in creating genre entertainment, but the industry is generally loath to support them. "Don't try to be Hollywood" is often the advice given to people. It is therefore almost a miracle that we do have one director who has been making genre films for over 35 years, often with financial success and international acclaim. His name: Dick Maas. You may know him from films as The Lift, Amsterdamned, Saint, or his recent creature-feature Prey (reviewed here), which was considered his biggest flop until it suddenly started breaking records a few weeks ago in China, with over a million...

This may come as a surprise to people, but not all fair-budget Dutch horror films have been directed by Dick Maas. In 1992, we got treated to The Johnsons by Rudolf van den Berg, and rest assured it was Not about those twin detectives from the Tintin comics. Instead, it was about a septuplet of boys and their sister. The girl grows up in a family, the boys in some asylum after they are discovered to have a penchant for killing other children. They escape though, and set out to fulfill an ancient prophecy: if they manage to impregnate their sister, she'll give birth to Xangadix, a god-monster who will destroy the Earth... Bizarre as the plot is, the history around the film's conception is...

(In the Vondelpark, the mighty Vondelpark, the lion sleeps tonight...) For decades now, director Dick Maas has been bucking trends in Dutch cinema. "We should focus on art-house, we can't compete with Hollywood!" has been the industry mantra here since the seventies. Yet time and time again, Dick has proven the industry wrong. His 1983 film The Lift was a sensation, won international acclaim and made household names of himself and his lead actor Huub Stapel. A few years later, he made the raunchy anti-social comedy Flodder and brought large scale destruction and stunts to the Netherlands, together with the start of a very successful franchise. Horror and comedy. Thrills. Dick Maas has always unabashedly, unapologetically gone for providing entertainment to his audiences. And he...

Amsterdamned, The Lift and Sint director Dick Maas returns to Dutch cinema screens this Halloween season with his latest piece of crowd pleasing fun Prey (Prooi). And what's next in a career that's seen the director terrorize his home town with killer elevators, killer Santas ad a killer diver lurking in its canals? A killer lion, of course. Maas' Prey turns a big cat loose on the streets of Amsterdam and it's one hungry kitty. Throw a one legged, wheelchair bound hunter into the mix and you've got a recipe for fun. We shared the teaser for this one a while back but with theatrical release coming in just a couple weeks the full trailer is now also available. Check it out below!...

Written and directed by Dick Maas, whose Santa Claus horror flick, Sint (review), was something of a success a couple of years back, has a new this new Dutch survival thriller coming out called Prey. the film is simply about an escaped lion terrorizing the city of Amsterdam. Why not.
Synopsis:
After the discovery of the gruesome murder of a peasant family just outside of Amsterdam, police are in the dark about the possible perpetrator. Lizzy, a vet, however thinks she knows what could have caused the bloody mutilations: a sharp, aggressive lion. She is met with disbelief and requires a second bloodbath for the authorities to accept the rigorous plan of an Englis [Continued ...]...

Dick Maas (Sint, Amsterdamned, The Lift) has released the first teaser for his lion-loose-in-Amsterdam movie, Prey. And it looks super fun! Do you need to know more than that? The teaser teases that the lion has already run 26 miles in one night. His "hobbies" have something to do with people. Is he seeking revenge? Does he want justice for past crimes by humanity? I have no idea, but I'm eager to find out. Prey is due in October. Have a look below....

Clear out your chimney and prepare the milk and cookies, here come the weirdest versions of Santa Claus ever.
The trappings of the Christmas season are inescapable in December. As we try not to be overtaken by the Yuletide undertow there are certain familiar images that we just can’t escape from. One of these is the big red beacon of Santa Claus himself. But even Saint Nick hasn’t been immune to a facelift.
Santa Claus has seen some subversion in a number of disturbing ways through the years, but alongside these perverse visions of Kris Kringle have also been other countries’ takes on the fabled character. Some of these ghoulish figures are Ded Moroz and the Snow Maiden from Slavic roots, the Joulupukki and Mikulas from Finland and Hungary respectively, as well as Olentzero and Tomte, Basque and Scandanavian characters. My favorite of these are...

The Nightmare During Christmas: Doughtery’s Cutesy Morality Play on the Christmas Spirit
Exploring the adverse aspects of Christmas, one of the most cherished holidays around the globe, is nothing new in cinema. Irate Christians were nonplussed about Bob Clark’s 1974 serial killer flick Black Christmas and its 2006 remake, claiming it compromised the spirit of their cherished holiday. And there are all those nagging, sordid details about good ole St. Nick’s bad side, conscientiously whittled away throughout centuries of increasingly honed capitalistic tendencies as regards the holiday. Several recent films have resurrected ideas about Santa’s nastier habits and what he does to the children that are actually naughty, like Dutch filmmaker Dick Maas’ Saint (2010) or Jalmari Helander’s inspired Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010) from Finland. Genre director Michael Doughtery makes a memorable entry in this growing subgenre with Krampus, a creative though utterly declawed venture which plays...

The producer of Dick Maas' horror comedy Sint is taking a turn into very different territory with upcoming comedy The Masters but the results look as though they should prove every bit as successful as the earlier holiday splatter picture. The Masters pairs a quartet of Dutch comedians - keen eyed readers will recognize the lead of Max Parcelijn's Plan C in there - as men dealing (or not dealing) with middle age to varying degrees of success who ultimately decide to get their old hip hop band back together. Yes, this is familiar ground but director Ruud Schuurman appears to handle the material with style and the principal cast (Mimoun Oaissa, Ruben van der Meer, Willie Wartaal, Guido Pollemans) are all immensely likeable.Check out the...

Throughout the month of December, we will be highlighting a film a day that has some tie into the holiday somehow. Some titles will be obvious, others won’t be. Some films will be good and, again, others won’t be. However, we think all titles are worth your time whether to give you chills inside your home or to make you drink more eggnog until you puke laughing.
The myth of Santa Claus can be traced to the Netherlands legend of Saint Nicholas. But in this film Saint Nicholas doesn’t bring presents. He was a bishop killed by the villagers that he tormented. And every full moon on the 5th of December he rises from the grave to take his revenge. But that was in the 10th century, and now the tale is told as a bedtime story. But this year Amsterdam better keep their doors locked. Saint Nick...

Upcoming Chinese horror film Lift To Hell comes exactly as described on the box, delivering a story of a lift (an elevator for us non-Brits) taking you on a one way trip to Evil. Horror is a burgeoning genre in mainland China thanks to some low cost, high yield successes with a host of production outfits now piling on the gravy train and trying to figure out how to be as gory as possible without running afoul of local censorship rules. And how they've managed that here is certainly a question. The bigger question, though - for those who have seen it - is how this trailer compares to Dick Maas' 1983 haunted elevator offering The Lift. Anyone?...

With the Mayan scare behind us, we can finally focus on the holiday season completely. And for you doomsdayers out there… Wrong again! The next film in the Slays of Christmas collection was recommended by none other than The Woman in Black herself: the Dutch holiday nightmare Sint.
Sint (aka Saint, aka Saint Nick) was written and directed by Dick Maas (keep your chuckles to yourself, please) and takes a couple of liberties with the Sinterklaas traditions of the Netherlands. Instead of being a fun-loving, gift-giving guy, Sint's portrayal of Sinterklaas is initially that of a murderous, looting gang leader in 1492 and then as a murderous zombie-like beast as the film moves into Amsterdam in the present time. According to the film, whenever there is a full moon on December 5 (the day Sinterklaas is traditionally celebrated), he arises and basically kills as many people as gruesomely as he can.

It Came From 1980x has returned after a brief hiatus due to a fairly naughty little hurrican named Sandy. For no other reason other than I see folks spewing some insatiable spooge for this Dutch treat we are going to tackle a movie that has one of the finest cover boxes in the history of the game… and disappoints me to no end. Welcome to The Lift… or as you call it… The Elevator. I can’t tell you just how overrated this frickin’ movie is. People seem to get off on raving about it from every angle. It has become synonymous with retro-sheik. And why? Is it that pulse pounding synth hit laden score that’s guaranteed to make you scream The Entity? Is it the characteristic 1980’s cover at that has you thinking Max Headroom but feeling New Wave? I don’t know. I really can’t say.

It's easy to get so wrapped up in the holiday spirit to forget that not everyone celebrates the holidays in the same way. In the Netherlands, for example, gift giving is on December 5th when, as tradition tells it, St. Nicholas and his band of helpers, referred to as Black Peters, go around delivering gifts to children. For his own little twist on the tradition, writer/director Dick Maas has taken the familiar legend and delivered Saint (Sint).

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers?
