With Christmas now only a week away, there’s a big day of genre-related home entertainment releases to look forward to in the meantime, just in case you were in need of some last-minute gift ideas (or if you were looking to spoil yourself, which is totally cool). Easily my most anticipated Blu-ray release for all of 2017, Synapse Films' stunning 4K restoration of Suspiria gets the royal treatment via an incredible three-disc limited edition Steelbook set this Tuesday, and Severin Films is also keeping busy with their HD upgrade of The Amicus Collection, which includes Asylum, And Now The Screaming Starts, and The Beast Must Die.
Other notable Blu-ray and DVD releases for December 19th include American Gothic, Leatherface, mother!, and the limited edition Steelbook for Donnie Darko.
American Gothic (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
A new tale of terror from the director of The Legend of Hell House and The Incubus.

*Updated with the reported release date* "Do you know anything about witches?" Having been shaken to my core by the Goblin score while watching the 4K restoration of Suspiria at this year's Flashback Weekend in Chicago, I highly recommend you seek out the remastered screening if it plays anywhere near you (or several states away—it's that good). If you can't make it to one of the screenings, though, it's coming out on a collectible SteelBook Blu-ray from Synapse Films, and DiabolikDVD.com has revealed the official release date.
According to multiple sources, including DiabolikDVD, the Suspiria Blu-ray SteelBook is slated for a December 19th release from Synapse Films. We have a look at the previously announced special features below, and keep an eye on DiabolikDVD, Amazon, and Synapse Films' official website for more information. In case you missed it, check out Heather Wixson's review of the dazzling 4K restoration.

As the summer continues to roll on, that means we have another great week of horror and sci-fi home entertainment releases to look forward to. This time they may have gotten it right! If a knife or a straight razor won’t do, how about killing a victim with 500-pound metal artwork studded with spikes? Dario Argento distilled a new kind of slick, visually fetishistic horror who-dunnit thriller subgenre with this shocker, aided by the dreamy cinematography of Vittorio Storaro.

“I can hear it now: ‘Go to Italy. It’s a peaceful country, nothing much ever happens there’.”
Dario Argento’s The Bird With The Crystal Plumage 2-disc limited edition will be available on Blu-ray + DVD June 20th From Arrow Video
In 1970, young first-time director Dario Argento (Deep Red, Suspiria) made his indelible mark on Italian cinema with The Bird With The Crystal Plumage, a film which redefined the ‘giallo’ genre of murder-mystery thrillers and catapulted him to international stardom.
Sam Dalmas (Tony Musante, We Own the Night), an American writer living in Rome, inadvertently witnesses a brutal attack on a woman (Eva Renzi, Funeral in Berlin) in a modern art gallery. Powerless to help, he grows increasingly obsessed with the incident. Convinced that something he saw that night holds the key to identifying the maniac terrorizing Rome, he launches his own investigation parallel to that of the police, heedless...

Mario Bava turns from spooky gothic tales to a relentlessly violent murder spree in the glossy world of high fashion. The large cast gives us a fistful of prime suspects, while the main draw is Bava's powerful direction and razor-keen images - and in this excellent transfer, the colors can only be described as hallucinatory. Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key calls to mind what Orson Welles said of Paper Moon – “That title is so good, you shouldn’t even make the picture, you should just release the title!” For the first twenty or thirty minutes of Your Vice, I thought Welles’ advice especially apt. People keep dying in grisly ways around Oliviero (Luigi Pistilli), a failed writer who’s nonetheless held onto a pretty great mansion and is plenty creepy enough to be a rather obvious suspect. He regularly hosts parties for hippies as a way to amuse himself, feel connected to the kids, and provide a public platform from which he can get off on abusing his wife, Irina (Anita Strindberg). She’s timid, trapped in a hellish marriage, and genuinely terrified of Oliviero’s late mother’s cat (in her defense, the cat is named Satan...

Dario Argento’s Deep Red is a strange little film. Widely considered the director’s masterpiece, a view that I personally share as a big fan of Argento, Deep Red is at times brilliant, at times confusing, but never less than a joy to watch in terms of cinematic originality.
The plot revolves around a British jazz pianist (David Hemmings) living in Rome who witnesses the brutal murder of a renowned psychic (Macha Meril). Haunted by the feeling that he may have seen something crucial to help with the identification of the killer, he begins an investigation of his own, aided by flirty reporter Gianna Brezzi (Daria Nicolodi), and a friend of the victim, Giordani (Glauco Mauri).
Like many of Argento’s films, Deep Red can be accused of being style over substance, but the overall effect is a complex, at times hypnotic, experience that draws the viewer in and...

If you were asked to recommend a good Giallo film, chances are you’d look to one of Dario Argento’s films as a good start. Arrow’s release of the 4k remaster of Deep Red is a new box set that is not only one of the best Giallos from the director, but also one of Arrow Video’s best releases in recent months.
When Marcus Daly (David Hemmings) witnesses the murder of one of his neighbours as he stands in the street below, he rushes to her aid. Unable to save the woman he looks for clues as to who the murderer is. The only thing he can remember is a painting that seems to be missing from the woman’s apartment.

Massimo Dallamano may be best known to some as the cinematographer of Sergio Leone’s A Fistful of Dollars (1964) and For a Few Dollars More (1965), credited under the pseudonym Jack Dalmas. Following his collaborations with Leone, Dallamano would only serve as cinematographer twice more (his last credit being French director Michel Deville’s 1966 comedy The Mona Lisa Has Been Stolen starring George Chakiris and Marina Vlady). The explosive popularity of the spaghetti western would allow Dallamano to begin his own career as a director, with 1967 debut Bandidos (credited under another pseudonym, Max Dillman), but he’d soon after turn to the bread and butter of more exploitative genre fare. The director of eleven features, up until his death in 1976, Dallamano’s enduring, fascinating masterpiece stands as the 1972 title What Have You Done to Solange? Credited as a giallo staple, Dallamano’s film is more of a hybrid of subgenres, a mixed giallo and poliziotteschi film.

Throughout the history of cinema there are countless adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe’s work, from D. W. Griffith’s early take on The Sealed Room through Roger Corman’s series of lo-fi refittings of the 60s up to last year’s attempt to adapt The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether in Stonehearst Asylum. Looking back at two loose Italian adaptations of Poe’s classic horror short The Black Cat, Arrow’s new Edgar Allan Poe’s Black Cats set sees a towering duo of giallo cinema auteurs picking and choosing their favorite elements of the original tale and molding them to their supernatural, blade-wielding will with blood-spilling glee and cinematic aplomb.

In 1936, Berlin hosted the Olympics and Hitler asked director Leni Riefenstahl to film them. The result was a cinematic coup, but with sinister overtones
'The English attack, but the Germans are still in the lead," says the commentator as two Olympic rowing fours skim over the rippling water. "The English raise the tempo … They want to win again. But Germany is stronger. Germany wins!" The victorious boat glides past the spectator stands, and the four German athletes stick their arms out straight, just above head-height, in a proud Nazi salute.
