Princess Diana may be gone, but even decades after her death, details about her marriage to the now-King Charles III are emerging. According to an expert, the late British royal used one unflattering word to describe her husband in a tearful conversation with Queen Elizabeth II.
Diana described Charles as a ‘nightmare’ to Queen Elizabeth
Diana and King Charles had a famously tumultuous relationship. Its breakdown played out publicly in the ‘90s after being dubbed the “War of the Waleses.”
Behind palace doors, Diana, who died in August 1997 at the age of 36, royal expert Ingrid Seward has revealed, lamented about her marriage to the queen.
“Diana used to go to her private room in between appointments that the Queen had, which were every 20 minutes, and burst into tears,” the Majesty Magazine editor-in-chief said, per Ok.
Now for how Diana would describe Charles to her mother-in-law. “[She would say] ‘Everybody hates me, mama,...

After six seasons, The Crown is coming to an end (albeit in two parts to draw out the agony.) The royal drama helped to secure Netflix’s status as a maker of glossy prestige TV, winning a slew of Emmys in the process. It’s also inspired a barrage of discourse over its relationship with the truth. The dramatizing of the Windsor clan from the coronation of Elizabeth II onwards has made a surprising amount of people, from John Major to Judi Dench, angry at the possibility of a TV series not being 100% accurate. In the U.K., one MP even suggested the show should include a disclaimer to remind viewers that it isn’t a documentary (spoiler: Netflix did not add a disclaimer.)...

“The Crown” is back in the Emmy race again with its fifth season and the final completion of its ensemble rotation cast. The last time it was eligible in 2021, the historical drama about Queen Elizabeth II swept all the main categories at the Emmys and won 11 awards overall including Best Drama Series. This year, it received six nominations as part of Netflix’s haul of 103, the most of any streaming service and second of all networks. While this is the show’s first entry in the single digits, it still maintained its Best Drama Series bid and received crucial mentions in many of its technical categories. Read on for a closer look at “The Crown’s” six nominations.

With 21 wins under its belt, Netflix’s royal drama “The Crown” has always been an Emmys favorite. So much of the excitement around the show comes from its cast, which rotates every two seasons. Claire Foy and Matt Smith led the line as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip in seasons one and two while Josh O’Connor and Emma Corrin featured as Prince Charles and Princess Diana in seasons three and four. Now, in season five, the show is led by Imelda Staunton as the Queen, Dominic West as Prince Charles, and Elizabeth Debicki as Diana.

Whether they invite them or not, there are few stories where imagining what comes next is impossible. Part of the appeal of popular, lasting films and series is that they occupy a slice of a world, with the promise that something interesting might be happening elsewhere. Amidst the avalanche of brand extensions and franchise retreads and character revivals, “The Full Monty” feels like the kind of plucky independent film hit that could provide a foundation for a “where are they now” story that doesn’t feel like a cynical cash grab or marketing play. A quarter century after the original movie found success in a number of different arenas, a new FX series aims to revisit a ragtag group in the north England city of Sheffield to see what happens a generation after a sensation.

“It’s totally unlike anything I’ve done before. I think a layer of it, if I’m honest, is just immense pressure,” admits Elizabeth Debicki about portraying Princess Diana in Season 5 of the Emmy-winning “The Crown.” For our recent webchat she adds, “it’s pressure to play this real life person, or to come close to a suggestion of that person, which in this case is completely unique in the sense that our collective consciousness, our memory, this real life person we’re talking about. “I see Charles as a tragic hero with a tragic flaw, and this flaw is this marriage that he entered into, knowing that he loved somebody else,” declares Dominic West about playing the former Prince of Wales and now King Charles III in Season 5 of the Emmy-winning “The Crown.” For our recent webchat he adds, “I think most people’s understanding of Charles is that whatever misfortune he was going through, he sort of brought it upon himself because he agreed to marry someone knowing that he loves someone else. Elizabeth Debicki is putting her own spin on Princess Diana in season five of Netflix’s The Crown.
The actress sat down with The Hollywood Reporter to talk about her role as the Princess of Wales, including re-creating some of Diana’s iconic fashion and her personal views on the royals.
Season five of The Crown follows the British monarchy in the 1990s with the introduction of Prime Minister John Major (Jonny Lee Miller) while focusing on the troubled relationship between Diana and then-Prince Charles (Dominic West). One particular scene from The Crown’s newest season has left viewers “disappointed”.
Season five of the fan-favourite historical drama – released on 9 November – sees the timeline closer approaching the present day, with Elizabeth Debicki taking over for Emma Corrin as Princess Diana now in the 1990s.
The 10-episode series focuses on the crumbling marriage between the Princess of Wales and King Charles III, and the final scandals leading up to Diana’s untimely death.
In episode five, titled “The Way Ahead”, the show attempts to tackle the “Revenge Dress”, which was based on real-life events when Diana attended dinner at the Serpentine Gallery in 1994 wearing a black Christina Stambolian dress, shortly after Charles had seemingly confirmed his affair with Camilla Parker Bowles, Queen Consort.
The scenes show Debicki’s Diana selecting the dress and making her grand entrance, interwoven with scenes of the Royal Family reacting to Charles’ interview.

The Crown’s season five has reigned supreme over Netflix’s English-language television charts.
The royal drama was watched for 107.39M hours over its first five days, claiming the number one spot.
The series, which was created by Peter Morgan, launched on November 9 and the charts count data between November 7 and 13.
The fictionalized drama series now stars Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth II, Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip, Lesley Manville as Princess Margaret, Dominic West as Prince Charles and Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana.
These are decent numbers for the streamer, particularly in the fifth season of a show, and put it higher than the launch of Manifest’s fourth season, which recorded 57M hours watched last week, the 72M hours watched for From Scratch the week before and marginally ahead of the launch of season five of Cobra Kai, which reported 106.7M hours watched, admittedly with two more days of viewing.

Prince Philip was allegedly looking into suing Netflix over a scene in “The Crown” season 2.
Royal historian Hugo Vickers told The Sunday Times that Philip wasn’t happy with a false storyline surrounding the death of his sister Princess Cecilie.
She passed away in a plane crash in 1937 at age just 26 alongside her newborn baby, husband and two young sons.
In the second season of the show, that aired in 2017, Cecilie had been flying from Germany to London to help her then-16-year-old brother Philip, who was in trouble at school.
According to the New York Post, Philip’s father, Prince Andrew of Greece and Denmark, blamed Philip for the deaths at her funeral on the show.
Prince Andrew said as they laid Cecilie to rest in season 2, “I’m surprised he dare show himself here. Had it not been for Philip and his indiscipline she would never have taken that flight.

The storylines in the fifth season of The Crown have provoked much backlash, from scenes showing the former Prince Charles trying to force the Queen’s abdication to others suggesting Prince Philip was unfaithful to the late monarch.
Prominent figures, including Judi Dench, have demanded that the drama carry a disclaimer to make clear that the events of the series aren’t entirely factual. “The Crown” is back — and so is the Netflix series’ accompanying drama about what is and is not factually accurate. This season feels particularly explosive, as the first batch of episodes to take place in the oh-so-well-documented 1990s. Among the many topics tackled are the dissolution of marriages, the discovery of the remains of the Tsar of Russia and his family, the election of Tony Blair — and Prince Philip’s obsession with carriage driving.
In order to sift through what is historically accurate and what is merely conjecture (if not outright dramatic fiction), we turn to the Internet’s favorite arbiter of fact versus fantasy: Jonathan Frakes, the host of late ’90s meme-fave “Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction.” Are these “um, what?!?” moments true? Or is Peter Morgan just pulling the crown over our eyes?
Did Prince Charles really cut short his second honeymoon with Diana and their children?

Lesley Manville has slammed down the portcullis. “It’s a political situation. It’s a Netflix situation. It’s not a Lesley Manville situation.” I’ve only asked the new Princess Margaret in The Crown whether she’s ever acted in something so contentious. But since stepping into the role of the Queen’s sister in season five of the blockbuster drama, and being on the front line of an increasingly surreal controversy about its relationship to the truth, Manville has mastered the art of deflection. Even Netflix has told her she’s very good at it. “It’s a bit of a minefield, to be honest, but I think I handle it pretty well.” I’m lucky, she tells me, that I’m only chatting to her today and not her and her co-stars. “I’ve done some press with Imelda Staunton and Jonathan Pryce, and when you get...

Warning: contains spoilers for The Crown season 5.
The Crown and historical accuracy enjoy a fleeting rather than steadfast acquaintance. Peter Morgan’s Netflix drama concertinas history and jumps between time periods to follow emotional and symbolic through-lines rather than sticking to the recorded facts and timelines. “Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatization…” goes the proviso at the top of Season Five. School pupils shouldn’t rely on it to do their history homework, is the general consensus.
That established, below is the timeline of the 1991 – 1997 period depicted in Season Five according to the TV drama, with the odd note on where episodes diverge from what we know to be the real-life sequence of events.
As a reminder, Season four covered ‘The Thatcher Years’, running from Margaret Thatcher’s election as prime minister of Great Britain in May 1979 to her resignation as leader of the Conservative Party in November 1990, after...

The Crown viewers rejoiced at the arrival of the show’s fifth season on Netflix.
The historical drama returned on Wednesday (9 November) with a new cast stepping into the (rather sensible) shoes of the British royal family.
As The Crown heads into the Nineties, Imelda Staunton has taken over from Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II. Jonathan Pryce plays her husband Prince Philip, a role last portrayed by Tobias Menzies.
Season five focuses on the demise of the relationship between the then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana, played by Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki.
The breakdown of their marriage, including the “tampongate” scandal and Diana’s Panorama interview, are among the most contentious topics covered this season.
The Crown has also been surrounded by controversy as royal supporters have demanded that the series comes with a disclaimer clarifying that it is a work of fiction.

Has so much controversy ever turned out to be so entirely unjustified than the hysteria surrounding the latest season of “The Crown”?
“Disrespectful,” “vicious” and “cruel” are just some of the adjectives used over the last few months to describe Season 5 – despite the fact that almost no-one had actually seen it until Wednesday (Nov. 9), when it finally hit Netflix.
And yet, when Season 5 finally debuted, viewers could see for themselves that, from the first moment Imelda Staunton (taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Olivia Colman) appears in episode 1, co-creator and showrunner Peter Morgan portrays the British royal family with pathos, sensitivity and even tenderness.
In Staunton’s first on-screen appearance, the queen, now on the cusp of her eighth decade, is getting a medical check-up from a doctor who gently admonishes her for working too hard. “At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the less...

Netflix gathered The Crown’s new stars – Imelda Staunton, Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Jonny Lee Miller, Jonathan Pryce, and Dominic West – for a press conference in support of season five. The new season arrives just two months after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, and the series’ Queen, Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton, shared her feelings about the thousands of people who stood in line to pay their respects to the longest-reigning monarch in British history.
“I think they felt such huge respect for someone who kept her promise. She just kept her promise and she did the job,” said Staunton. “It amazed me, people’s response to her. I just thought, ‘God, you really admired this woman.’ People say ‘love’ – I think they admired (her). Here we are celebrating a woman who, with her own face – you know...

Ahead ofThe Crown season five, Dame Judi Dench expressed her anger with the Netflix series.
The Oscar-winning actor shared her views on the show via an open letter, in which she called upon the streaming service to add a disclaimer to the opening of each episode.
Dench hoped this disclaimer would alert viewers to the fact that the series is a “fictionalised drama”.
As of writing, Netflix decided against adding anything to the start of episodes in the new season, which was released on Wednesday (9 November).
But, which scenes led Dench to brand the series “crude sensationalism”?
One arrived in the premiere episode of season five, titled “Queen Victoria Syndrome”, and it saw Prince Charles (Dominic West) attempting to convince Prime Minister John Major (Jonny Lee Miller) in the early 1990s that his mother, Queen Elizabeth II (Imelda Staunton) was no longer fit for the throne.

While The Crown actor Jonathan Pryce, has called these reactions to the show “hugely disappointing”, claiming that viewers know it’s a drama, not a documentary.
Some of the storylines in season five are pretty close to the truth. Others, not so much.
Here’s a full rundown of what is covered in each episode of The Crown season five, and links to our articles about what’s fact versus what’s fiction in the series.

The Crown‘s fifth season set sail on Wednesday with a whole new cast and a premiere full of creaky-old-boat metaphors.
The premiere opens with a flashback to young Elizabeth (hi, Claire Foy!) christening the royal ocean liner Britannia. Now in 1991, a graying Elizabeth (now played by Imelda Staunton) is in her mid-60s, and a new poll is calling her “irrelevant” and “out of touch” while her son Charles (now played by Dominic West) is seen as “young” and “modern.” Half of those polled even support Charles taking over for Elizabeth early. The Crown season five viewers are feeling conflicted over a certain character’s depiction.
On Wednesday (9 November), the Netflix series released new episodes that chart royal family events that occurred in the 1990s.
As has been the case with previous seasons, the show also explores the prime minister of the time’s relationship with the monarchy – and this time around, it’s John Major.
Jonny Lee Miller makes his debut as Major in the premiere episode, titled “Queen Victoria Syndrome”, and his appearance has left viewers feeling somewhat “conflicted” – because they can’t help but fancy him.
“Why is Johnny Lee Miller playing John Major...he is far too hot. I don’t want to fancy John Major,” one fan wrote, while another added: “If you make me fancy John Major I’ll be furious.”
An additional viewer stated: “Jonny Lee Miller appreciation tweet, even as John Major I can’t unsee the hotness,...

On the eve of the premiere of the fifth season of “The Crown,” Edith Bowman hosted a virtual press conference with six of the Netflix drama’s new cast members: Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Jonny Lee Miller, Jonathan Pryce, Imelda Staunton, and Dominic West. Having inherited their roles as British royal family members and associates from the younger cast of Season 4, these performers are tasked with depicting their established characters’ “biggest challenge yet: proving their continued relevance in ‘90s Britain.”
Read their responses to questions regarding the experience of bringing these iconic figures to life.
Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth II): “When you’ve got the writing there that does probably about 80, if not more, of the work… the challenge is getting the audience to come inside, hopefully, and see what you’re feeling without showing what you’re feeling… I think for all of us… this family… we are locked.

Some viewers of The Crown are struggling with the new season because of Harry Potter.
The Netflix show has returned for a fifth run, which will serve as its penultimate, and the new episodes will chart royal family events that occurred in the 1990s.
A new cast is in place for the final two seasons to reflect the passing of time, but one newcomer is distracting viewers in a big way.
Imelda Staunton replaces Claire Foy and Olivia Colman as Queen Elizabeth II in the new season – and while she’s impressing many, there are a contingent of people who cannot help but be reminded of the character she played in Harry Potter.

The Crown season 5: The scene that deals with Prince Andrew – ‘It’s the sheer humiliation of it all’
The new season of The Crown is here, and it focuses on the royal family’s lives in the 1990s.
With two seasons left to go, many are tuning in to see how the series depicts the marriage of Charles and Diana, who are now played by Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki.
One thing viewers might have thought about ahead of the new seasons was how the Netflix show would continue to depict Prince Andrew.
Season four, which was released in 2020, was the first to be written after allegations against the royal linked him to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, and one scene appeared to directly respond to the claims.
Now, showrunner and writer Peter Morgan has seemingly addressed the public’s view on Andrew in the fourth episode from season five.
The scene shows Andrew (James Murray) visiting his mother, Queen Elizabeth (Imelda Staunton), to share some news about his personal life.

The Crown has not included a fictional disclaimer for its new season despite calls from critics.
The hit Netflix show returned on Wednesday (9 November) for its highly anticipated fifth season, which largely focuses on the breakdown of the marriage between the late Princess Diana and then Prince Charles.
You can follow updates from the series’ launch on The Independent’s live blog here.
Despite controversy, series producers decided against adding a disclaimer that reminds viewers that the show is a fictional dramatisation of real events.
Instead, a disclaimer was added the latest trailer for The Crown in the lead-up to its new season but not the programme itself.
In its trailer, posted on YouTube, Netflix writes: “Inspired by real events, this fictional dramatisation tells the story of Queen Elizabeth II and the political and personal events that shaped her reign.”
The Independent has contacted Netflix for comment.

Viewers of The Crown are reacting to the return of one of the show’s original stars.
The Netflix series is back for its fifth and penultimate run with a brand new cast, including Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville.
Those tuning in to see what Staunton would bring to the role of Queen Elizabeth II were immediately treated to a comparison in the form of returning star Claire Foy.

Foy played the Queen in the first two seasons of the show, earning acclaim as well as two Emmy Awards for her performance.
One of these trophies was for her guest appearance in season four of the series, and viewers are convinced she will receive another award for this new two-minute cameo, which occurs in the first scene of season five.

Since The Crown launched on Netflix in 2016, it’s become a monumental hit, including being the first show to win all seven major drama category awards during the 2021 Emmys. And now it’s back for its fifth, and penultimate, series.
There’s a particular buzz around this latest season of this fictional dramatisation of the life of Queen Elizabeth II: not only is there a major cast change for the second time, it will also be the first time a new series airs since the deaths of Queen Elizabeth and her husband Prince Philip.
Season five will cover the 1990s, arguably one of the royal family’s most difficult decades. They endured a major fire at Windsor Castle, the messy public breakdown of Charles and Diana’s marriage, and the leadup to the tragedy of Diana’s death in a car crash in Paris.

That John Major is one mighty hunk of man-meat,” said no one but Edwina Currie probably. Watch The Crown this season, though, and you’ll be foaming at the mouth in minutes over Britain’s most boring Pm. See, Major – who absolutely, categorically did not advise Prince Charles on whether to force his mother’s abdication in 1991, thank you very much – is played in The Crown by Jonny Lee Miller, an actor so flagrantly good-looking that even dressing him up in geeky spectacles and a floppy grey wig can’t extinguish the heat.
Inappropriate sexiness is The Crown’s métier. The actors behind The Crown‘s latest version of the British royal family — including Dominic West, Jonathan Pryce and Lesley Manville — welcomed fans to the ’90s at the world premiere of The Crown‘s fifth season on Tuesday night.
On a wet evening in central London, with Queen Elizabeth II no longer on the throne, a fresh cast for Netflix’s hit series ushered in its long-awaited return.
Season five’s Prince Charles (played by West), led the lineup on the red carpet for the show’s world premiere at the brightly lit and aptly named Theatre Royal Drury Lane. It was here a young Jonny Lee Miller used to sell programs and ice cream, according to Pryce, who stars as a 70-year-old Prince Philip. These two were joined by Imelda Staunton (Queen Elizabeth), Elizabeth Debicki (Princess Diana), Manville (Princess Margaret) and self-dubbed...

On the eve of the Season 5 launch of “The Crown,” top-billed cast members – including Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce, Dominic West and Elizabeth Debicki – gathered at a press conference in London to discuss the royals, the roles and their anticipation for audiences to watch the show.
Staunton, who takes over the role of Queen Elizabeth II from Olivia Colman, said she felt “quite excited” for the season to finally be released on Netflix on Wednesday (Nov. 9). “This is a working week for me, I’m filming [season 6] in the morning,” she said. “But I think we’re very excited because I think we do feel extremely proud to be part of it, but proud of what we’ve done in this fifth series.”
“I second that,” said Pryce, who plays her husband Prince Philip, a role he inherited from Tobias Menzies.
“I’ve not seen all of it, unlike lots of journalists around the world,...

The highly anticipated fifth season of "The Crown" arrives on Nov. 9, transporting audiences back to Brtain in 1991. A 65-year-old Queen Elizabeth II is entering her 39th year at the helm, and the series is set to cover around half of the tumultuous ensuing decade for the queen and her family.
Continuing the tradition of bringing a fresh cast every two seasons to realistically portray the aging royals, Olivia Colman is this time replaced by Imelda Staunton as the monarch, while Jonathan Pryce takes up the reins as Prince Philip. Margaret Thatcher (played gloriously in season four by Gillian Anderson) is gone, after being unceremoniously shown the door of Number 10 by duplicitous members of her own party. She's replaced as prime minister by John Major, played by the surprisingly cast Jonny Lee Miller.

Season 5 of “The Crown” is coming under fire ahead of its Nov. 9 debut, with former UK Prime Minister Tony Blair’s spokesperson calling the Netflix series’ depiction of a secret meeting between Prince Charles and John Major “complete and utter rubbish.”
The series is expected to portray a 1991 meeting between Charles and John Major — Blair’s predecessor — at Highgrove in which the pair discusses conspiring against Queen Elizabeth II. “The Crown” is also expected to drag Blair into the plot when Charles tries to gain Blair’s support after the 1997 general election as Charles secures his plan to marry Camilla.
“[It] will be profoundly hurtful to a family who are still grieving for the very person on whose life the entire drama was founded,” Major wrote in a letter to the Daily Telegraph Friday. “Fiction should not be paraded as fact.”
