After first teasing the costume at the end of February, yesterday saw us finally get a proper look at David Corenswet's Man of Steel in DC Studios and James Gunn's Superman. Unfortunately, the response has been mixed.
That's typically the case with any suit reveal, but the image makes some noteworthy missteps in its presentation that have left some fans concerned with the creative direction of the Dcu.
In this feature, we take a look at those and what the image itself reveals about Superman. From a possible villain tease to the suit's finer, possibly McU-inspired finer details, we're breaking it down for you in as much detail as possible.

If you want to win an Oscar for Best Costume Design, it’s best to pick a project for which you can create frilly dresses from a bygone era. Since its introduction at the 1948 Academy Awards, this category has favored period pictures, including the 2021 winner “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Voters love to reward the creative forces behind such films, especially those that are about the aristocracy including recent champs “Marie Antoinette” (2007), “Elizabeth: The Golden Age” (2008), “The Duchess” (2009), “The Young Victoria” (2010), and “Anna Karenina” (2013). (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2023 Oscars Best Costume Design predictions.)
By the way, none of those films even competed for Best Picture. Indeed, only 20 of the most recent 73 Best Picture champs also won this award. Among these was “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2004). Fantasy films such as this often boast Oscar-winning costumes, including 2022 champ “Cruella,” 2019 winner “Black Panther” and its...

The nominees list for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Board of Governors has been revealed before its June 6-10 balloting.
The candidates are hoping to fill the open seats on the 54-member board. Up to four candidates are set for the open seat at each each branch, which carries three governors with staggered terms per branch.
Board members who have termed out include Academy president David Rubin (from the casting directors branch), Jan Pascale (production designers), Mark Johnson (producers) and Nancy Utley (PR).
Candidates vying for a seat include actress Marlee Matlin, composer Hans Zimmer, and executive Toby Emmerich.
The slate faces some crucial tests once installed, including selecting a new Academy president and new CEO to replace outgoing Dawn Hudson. The Academy also must overcome perceptions created in a rocky year, with its Will Smith Oscars slap incident and the uproar over what categories would make it into the Oscars broadcast.

“Cruella” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Costume Design with a win on March 9 at the Costume Designers Guild Awards. It prevailed in the period design race over three of its Oscar rivals — “Cyrano,” “Nightmare Alley” and “West Side Story” — plus “House of Gucci.”
Its closest Oscar competition could be “Dune,” which won the fantasy/sci-fi prize at the CDG Awards on Wednesday. The other CDG winner was the contemporary film “Coming 2 America.”
In its 23-year history, the CDG has previewed only 11 of the Oscar winners for Best Costume Design; eight of these have been period pictures and three have been sci-fi or fantasy flicks. Of the last five Costume Designers Guild Awards winners two have gone on to repeat at the Academy Awards: “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2021 and “Black Panther” in 2019.
In 2018, “The Shape of Water” won with the guild while “Phantom Thread” prevailed at the Oscars.

“Cruella” (Disney),” “Dune” (Warner Bros.), and “Coming 2 America” (Amazon Prime) were the big film winners Wednesday night at the 24th annual Costume Designers Guild Awards. “Cruella” designer and two-time Oscar winner Jenny Beavan won for period; Denis Villeneuve’s epic “Dune” took sci-fi honors for costume designers Jacqueline West and Robert Morgan; and Oscar winner Ruth Carter (“Black Panther”) earned the contemporary prize for “Coming 2 America.”
Held at the The Broad Stage in Santa Monica, the annual awards celebrated the best in film, TV, and short-form costume design in eight categories that spanned fantasy, contemporary, and period works. Show hosts were actors Andrew Rannells (“The Prom”) and Casey Wilson (“The Shrink Next Door”).

Transforming Margot Robbie into Harley Quinn for “The Suicide Squad” often took two people, with makeup artist Heba Thorisdottir leading the way by channeling a rock star. Thorisdottir is nominated for a Make-up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Award for best contemporary makeup in a feature-length motion picture.
In Warner Bros.’ summer release, Harley Quinn and the prisoners of Belle Reve set out on a mission to destroy Jotunheim, a Nazi-era prison and laboratory in South America.
Director James Gunn gave Thorisdottir complete creative control on the looks with one stipulation: “As long as they were dirty and gritty. His direction was that he wanted everyone to look destroyed by the end of the film,” she says.
Her starting point was taking Harley’s traditional red and black palette “too far, and then go another 10 levels” for a movie that was bloodier than the 2016 original. For a makeup artist, detail was key: Cuts,...

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the 2022 Oscars reaped bids on January 26 for the Costume Designers Guild Awards.
“Cruella,” “House of Gucci” and “West Side Story” contend here in the period picture category against “Cyrano” and “Nightmare Alley,” which rank sixth and seventh in our Oscar odds.
Another likely Oscar contender, “Dune,” vies here in the sci-fi/fantasy race against “The Green Knight,” “The Matrix Resurrections,” “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings,” “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and “The Suicide Squad.”
Our fifth predicted Oscar nominee, “Spencer,” can take heart that the guild often overlook films that go on to contend at the Academy Awards. Indeed the 2020 Oscar winner for Best Costume Design, “Little Women,” was snubbed by the CDG as were two of the other nominees, “The Irishman” and “Joker.” The guild honored one of the other academy nominees, “Jojo Rabbit.”

The nominations for the Costume Designers Guild Awards will be released on Wednesday, recognizing the achievements of the artisans that created some of the most memorable outfits and clothing designs of the year. Following the 10-month eligibility window, the community of over 1,200 members separates the film categories into three groups — contemporary, period and sci-fi/fantasy.
The distinctions between contemporary and period tend to get blurred, especially with modern subjects like Princess Diana in “Spencer” and Venus and Serena Williams in “King Richard” among the selections. However, per the CDG rules, “any entry with at least 51% of all costumes existing in a historical era greater than 25 years [on or before December 31, 1995] from the current entry year will be considered a period entry.”
That puts Jacqueline Durran (“Spencer”) and Sharen Davis (“King Richard”) into the period film field, where it’s indisputably the most competitive. Three of the five nominees from CDG typically translate to an...

One of the most wildly anticipated films of the summer hits theaters and on HBO Max on August 6, director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

Gunn says of his latest film, “I wanted to do the ultimate all-time comic book movie!”

Spider-Man‘s arrival into the McU was certainly one of cinema’s most celebrated moments in recent memory. It seemed like everyone from longtime fans to casual moviegoers alike all united in jubilation for the most popular Marvel hero’s appearance in Captain America: Civil War.
While the character featured prominently in the following Avengers films and starred in his own two solo movies, his debut still stands out thanks to one incredibly unique costume seen adorning our favorite wall-crawler. Not the one worn in the famous airport brawl, but rather the one we see beforehand when Tony Stark meets the young crime fighter at his New York apartment. This getup consists of a hoodie, a pair of goggles and a cloth mask.
Since this suit had no practical advantages (except maybe the cloth mask) over the high tech upgrade provided by Stark Industries, it saw little use beyond these...

The list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election is now out, with the winner in each branch being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.
Also new this year in the streamlined timetable, as Deadline exclusively reported May 16. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.
The actors branch is the largest in the Academy and it also has drawn the biggest field of contenders for the one spot that is up. Incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board.

Whoopi Goldberg will be facing 18 other actors who want her seat on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors, the Academy revealed to its members on Friday.
The Academy posted the list of candidates for the board from all 17 of its branches, with incumbent Actors Branch governor Goldberg going up against a slate of challengers that includes past governor Ed Begley Jr., as well as Richard Dreyfuss, James and Stacy Keach, Tim Matheson, Joe Pantoliano, Lou Diamond Phillips and Rita Wilson, whose husband, Tom Hanks, served on the board for many years.
Other branches whose contenders hit double digits included Cinematographers (12), Directors (13), Executives (12), Producers (16), Sound (10) and Visual Effects (10).
But the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch, in which incumbent Kathryn Blondell was ineligible to run again, has only a single candidate, Linda Flowers.

Four of our five predicted nominees for Best Costume Design at the Oscars — “Dolemite is My Name,” “Downton Abbey,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Rocketman” — reaped bids for the Costume Designers Guild Awards. While our fifth contender — “Little Women” — was snubbed, fans of that film should take heart from the fact that the Cdg awards often overlook one of the eventual Academy Awards nominees.
The winner of a Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars as was the case last year with “Black Panther.” But in 2018, “The Shape of Water” won with the guild while “Phantom Thread” prevailed at the Oscars. And in 2017, the academy went with the fantasy film “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which had lost at the guild to the Oscar-snubbed “Doctor Strange.”
The 22nd edition of these kudos, which also honor costume design in television and commercials, will take place at the Beverly Hilton on Jan.

The Costume Designers Guild announced their nominations for the 22nd Cdga Awards on Tuesday. Among the nominees are Arianne Phillips for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Mayes C. Rubeo for “Jojo Rabbit” and Mitchell Travers for “Hustlers.” “The Irishman” is notably absent from the field.
The Costume Designers Guild celebrates excellence in film, television and short-form costume design. As previously announced, this year’s host will be Emmy-nominated writer, producer, author, director and actor Mindy Kaling, while the honorees will include Mary Ellen Fields (distinguished service award), Michael Kaplan (career achievement award), Adam McKay (distinguished collaborator award) and Charlize Theron (spotlight award).
“On behalf of the Costume Designers Guild, I’d like to congratulate all of our 22nd Cdga nominees. This year is a particularly exciting year for television as we have updated our rules of submission. Designers now submit a single episode that best represents their work on a series.

Nominees for the 22nd annual Costume Designer Guild Awards included frontrunning period pieces “Dolemite Is My Name,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” and “Rocketman.” They were joined by “Downton Abbey” and “Jojo Rabbit.” This definitely bodes well for Ruth Carter (“Dolemite”) in her bid for a second consecutive Oscar following “Black Panther.”
However, surprise no shows were “Joker,” “The Irishman,” “Little Women,” and “Judy.” And, Deborah Cook, who became the first costume designer from animation to get nominated by the Cdga for her breakthrough work on “Kubo and the Two Strings,” was denied this time around for her great Victorian-era work on Laika’s stop-motion Oscar contender, “Missing Link.”
Contemporary nominees, meanwhile, included “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” “Hustlers,” “Knives Out,” “The Laundromat,” and “Queen & Slim.” But “Bombshell” didn’t make the cut.

Michael Kaplan, whose sartorial imagination and grasp of garb has been on display in screen projects such as Blade Runner, Star Trek, Flashdance, Fight Club, The Alienist, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, I Am Legend, Se7en, and Pearl Harbor, is this year’s winner of the Costume Designers Guild’s Career Achievement Award;
Kaplan will be presented with the honor at the 22nd Costume Designers Guild Awards (CDGAs) on January 28 at The Beverly Hilton. Filmmaker J.J. Abrams, who has worked with Kaplan in two screen universes (the Disney-owned Jedi galaxies and Paramount’s Federation universe) will present the award. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has elected its 2019-20 Board of Governors. And it’s more diverse than ever before. These are the folks, for better or worse, who steer the Academy ship. When they assume their posts July 1, the number of women Academy governors will increase from 22 to 24, and people of color will grow from 10 to 11, including the already announced three new Governors-at-Large: DeVon Franklin, Rodrigo Garcia, and Janet Yang.
Among the 54 governors — three for each of 17 branches, serving three years — voluntarily leaving their board seats are Sharen Davis, Leonard Engelman, and Daniel Fellman, while terming out are president John Bailey, Robin Swicord, and John Bloom.
Among the finalists vying for board slots, actress Laura Dern beat out Tim Matheson and Rita Wilson, writer Eric Roth outpaced John Ridley, director Steven Spielberg overcame rivals Reginald Hudlin and Michael Mann, Oscar producer Donna Gigliotti outranked Sony executives Tom Rothman and Michael Barker,...

The death of fashion and costume designer Karl Lagerfeld cast somewhat of a shadow over the usually jubilant Costume Designers Guild Awards — the only award show where clothes literally steal the spotlight away from actors — which was held at the Beverly Hilton on Tuesday night. Here it was obvious that Lagerfeld’s impact on Hollywood went far beyond an uncredited cameo in “Zoolander.”
Glenn Close, who was being honored with the spotlight award, recalled her one and only encounter with Lagerfeld. “I’m not deep into the world of fashion, but I did meet him personally on the set of ‘101 Dalmatians’ and we had this incredible photo shoot,” Close said. “He was wonderful — I got along really well with him. And the thing that I find so impressive is that he designed himself, you know? This person with the high collars and the dark glasses and the gloves. It’s like: Wow,...

The Oscar frontrunner for Best Costume Design, “The Favourite,” won a top honor at the Costume Designers Guild Awards on Tuesday. It picked up the period prize over two of its Oscar rivals — “Mary Poppins Returns” and “Mary Queen of Scots” — as well as “BlacKkKlansman” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
Another Oscar contender in that category, “Black Panther,” won the fantasy film race over “Aquaman,” “The Avengers: Infinity War,” “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
And the contemporary costumes of “Crazy Rich Asians” prevailed over “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again,” “Ocean’s 8,” “A Star Is Born” and “Widows.”
The fifth Oscar nominee, “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs,” was snubbed by the guild which has a stellar track record at honoring the eventual Oscar winner. The winner of the period film Cdg prize tends to repeat at the Oscars. However, that has not been the case for the last two years running.

At long last “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” has entered awards season thanks to the 21st Costume Designers Guild Awards. The Cga has announced its 2019 nominees in three film categories, seven television categories, and one short form design category, and the group brings expected Oscar contenders up against some fun, lighter fare like “Mamma Mia!” and “A Wrinkle in Time.”
A majority of IndieWire awards editor Anne Thompson’s current predictions to land Oscar nominations for Best Costume Design are represented by the Cdga. Erin Benach (“A Star Is Born”) and Ruth Carter (“Black Panther”) are competing in the Excellence in Contemporary Film and Excellence in Sci-Fi/Fantasy Film categories, respectively, while Julian Day (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Sandy Powell (“The Favourite”) are nominated in the Excellence in Period Film. For anyone with an eye to costume, The Avengers: Infinity War (2018) seemingly takes few evolutionary leaps. This makes perfect sense when we consider the timeline following particularly significant events of Captain America: Civil War (2016) and Black Panther (2017). Infinity War costume designer Judianna Makovsky has crafted a combination of instantly familiar looks for a jam-packed canon of characters where nobody wants to be missed, but nobody should stick out above anyone else either. It’s a real balancing act, which is something we are should sure Thanos himself would appreciate.
Judianna Makovsky really had no choice but to keep the hero costumes worn by the Avengers and friends practically identical to their last incarnation. As a reference what we mean by hero costumes are those worn when going into battle or ‘suiting up’. So, Steve Rogers having a run around the Washington monuments? Civilian costume. Steve Rogers kicking arse in Edinburgh Waverly train station?...

We’ve had an adorable raft of concept art for little Baby Groot (see above) and chatter of a sixth, mysterious post-credits scene, but the latest Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 tidbit circles back to the sequel’s genesis to reveal an alternate design for Mantis, Pom Klementieff’s socially oblivious clairvoyant.
Raised under the looming shadow of Ego, the Living Planet – Kurt Russell plays the humanoid version of said deity – Mantis turns out to be a welcome addition to the fold, and her dynamic with Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) is arguably one of the film’s many highlights.
But now that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is playing in theaters across the globe (our review), Screen Rant has uncovered a new piece of concept...

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Vision was born when Tony Stark’s A.I. J.A.R.V.I.S. was downloaded into a synthetic body originally intended for Ultron. One Mind Stone insertion and a blast of Thor’s lightning later, the Avengers had themselves a new powerful android ally. When Captain America: Civil War begins, Vision is still working with the other Avengers to protect the world, but in his down time, he’s trying to fit in more with humanity. This includes wearing dapper-looking clothing, as we’ve seen in previews and clips. In an interview with Vulture, costume designer Judianna Makovsky recapped how she and directors Joe and Anthony Russo talked about how Vision would make himself feel more comfortable around the other Avengers. After passing on basic comfort clothes, like sweats, they settled for the more dignified look seen above ...

Marvel Studios and James Gunn have officially announced the start of principal photography on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Tiny Groot even came along for the first cast image!
Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, and Dave Bautista return to portray Star-Lord, Gamora, and Drax, along with Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel lending their voices to Rocket Raccoon and Groot. Michael Rooker, Sean Gunn, and Karen Gillan also return as Yondu, Kraglin, and Nebula.
New faces to join the cast include Pom Klementieff (Oldboy), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby), Chris Sullivan (The Knick) and Kurt Russell are all officially onboard. Their characters have yet to be revealed, but I really hope Russell plays a bad guy, with a very long mustache perhaps.
Check out the announcement from Gunn himself on Twitter and read the long and tedious press release from Marvel below if you want.
