On the eve of the November 1963 release of Twice Told Tales, the British actor Sebastian Cabot would tell a reporter from the Copley News Service, “They’ve been after me to do more of the horror pictures with Vincent Price. I wouldn’t mind that a bit, though I must say I wouldn’t want to do them exclusively.” He intimated that he and his co-star had discussed a possible future pairing in “a light comedy” motion-picture. Alas, it was not to be; the two actors would not work together again. Cabot, of course, would soldier on and enjoy success as both a television personality and a recognizable voice-over actor. Following the passing of Boris Karloff in 1969, Vincent Price would reign as the big-screen’s uncontested “King of Horror.” Cabot’s estimation of Price as an actor “extremely adept” at light-comedy was incisive. Throughout his long and fabled career,...

California Chrome has failed in his bid to win the first Triple Crown in horse racing in 36 years. Tonalist won the Belmont Stakes, and California Chrome finished far back in a tie for fourth Saturday. Hopes had been high that the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner would end the longest Triple Crown drought in horse racing history. In an industry dominated by millionaires and billionaires, California Chrome was an underdog. Owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn bred an $8,000 mare to a $2,500 stallion to win two of the world's most famous races with their one-horse stable. But the 3-year-old and jockey...

At first, it looked like it might not happen, but California Chrome displayed the heart of a champion when he came from third place to win the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. The Kentucky Derby winner - a chestnut colt with four white feet - had been heard coughing after training on Thursday, but was treated with a glycerin throat wash as his assistant trainer declared it was just "a little tickle." Winning the $1.5 million Preakness means that California Chrome could be the first horse in 36 years to take the Triple Crown - if he wins the Belmont Stakes in three weeks' time.

California Chrome pulled away down the stretch for a dominant win the 140th Kentucky Derby on Saturday at Churchill Downs. Taking charge at the top of the lane, California Chrome and jockey Victor Espinoza made a decisive move and quickly sprinted clear. They finished the 1¼ miles in 2:03.66. The 5-2 favorite stretched his winning streak to five and Art Sherman, 77, became the oldest winning Derby trainer. In a game dominated by millionaires and billionaires, this was a victory for the little guys. Owners Perry Martin and Steve Coburn bred an $8,000 mare to a $2,500 stallion to win the world's most famous race with their one-horse stable.

The Film:
Until the recent release of Alex Aja’s awesome remake, Piranha 3D, I had not seen a fun, good old-fashioned underwater creature feature since Deep Rising and Deep Blue Sea. While all three of these pictures had the benefit of large budgets and a studio backing, they wore their monster mash carrying cards proudly as they churned out body counts and gore galore.
This can be done in the low budget doldrums as well, as seen in the Roger Corman produced classics Humanoids from the Deep and the original Piranha. They were both lean, mean, eviscerating machines where the latex monsters chowed down on any naked, stupid, and clueless piece of meat that crossed their path. The make-up effects on both might seem primitive compared to what we see now, but they felt like they were part of the film because they were on-set and not created on a laptop.

Can you believe FEARnet is already onto its eighth original web series already? The Comcast-backed horror hub, which recently launched Fear Clinic, is now gearing up for Post Mortem with Mick Garris. The interview series will feature five minute episodes, in a "Charlie Rose of Horror" fashion, with various horror directors and other luminaries like Tobe Hooper, Wes Craven, Robert Englund and John Carpenter. Mick Garris might in fact be the Charlie Rose of horror, having a rolodex that reads like a who's who in the genre after creating The Fantasy Film Festival and Showtime's Masters of Horror anthology series. "There is nobody in the business who can bring to our audience what Mick can – an unprecedented knowledge of the industry from the ground up, and a network of A-List colleagues who are happy to share with him and our viewers their experiences, stories and insights about fear-inspired entertainment,” said FEARnet's President Diane Robina.
