Although relatively scarce, horror movies directed by women are out there. You may have to turn over a few rocks to know who they are and their material might be a little more difficult to get your hands on, but these directors deserve just as much attention and scrutiny as their male counterparts, who have long dominated the genre. The following discusses selections of female directors’ forays into the business of terror. (This post contains spoilers)
Antonia Bird
The late director Antonia Bird’s Ravenous is a bizarre amalgamation of humor and horror that explores cannibalism with warped nuance. The strangely cacophonous score builds up tension as craven outcasts face a glutinous and depraved attacker whose strength seems fortified by his consumption of human flesh. Set during America’s westward expansion, the metaphor of humanity’s insatiable appetite for power is plain to see, but its execution indulges in such...

Holy cats, creeps, I can hardly believe my putrid peepers! None other than the diabolical duo Jen and Sylvia Soska have dropped by the ol’ Crypt o’ Xiii to chew the fat and give us a look into what it’s like bein’ two of the most talented die-rectors in the horror biz!

You all know Katherine Isabelle for her work in films like the Ginger Snaps trilogy (2000 – 2004), Freddy Vs. Jason (2003), Ogre (2008), 30 Days Of Night: Dark Days (2010) and countless other film & television roles. There are several subgenres in scary movies, but one of the most petrifying to endure is "body horror." While it's certainly unnerving to watch an innocent heroine try to hold her own against a murdering sociopath, it's much more unsettling to witness a person menaced by their own body. Body horror films are often difficult to sit through, since the viewer feels his or her own vulnerability at work; after all, what greater invasion of privacy is there than to have your nemesis lurking beneath your own skin? What greater discomfort exists than watching a familiar character morph into a horrific creature? In honor of this particularly repulsive horror category, I've listed ten of the most disturbing body horror movies ever made. Read on, and see which titles you can stomach... 10. Thinner In this Stephen King adaptation, Billy Halleck is a self-centered, overweight man with no remorse. When he accidentally runs over a gypsy woman,...

The upcoming February 7th release of Nurse 3D has everyone buzzing, and why not? With Paz de la Huerta and Katrina Bowden heating up the screen, how can you go wrong? To celebrate, we bring you Five Beautifully Broken Nurses.
Now, of course you have the standard fare, the all-star psycho nurses like Annie Wilkes in Misery, Nurse Ratched from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, everyone's favorite nurse to hang around with in Halloween II, and that beastly bunch of corpse-like caregivers from Silent Hill. But we thought we'd go a bit off the beaten path on this one.
First, some honorable mentions. We're going to categorize these nurses as NILFs, but we've got two different types of NILFs. We've got the traditional "Nurses I'd Like to... Fornicate" (with, haha!) and "Nurses I'd Like to Forget" for the really disturbing ones.

If you look in to the history of movies, you’ll undoubtedly see that they’ve brought us a whole host of female characters who you simply would not want to mess with for a variety of reasons.
Whether it’s because they’re crazy, dangerous, unpredictable, tough as nails or not quite what they seem at face value, some female characters just aren’t to be trifled with.
Messing with these women/girls could result in pain, torture or even death. Therefore, it really isn’t advisable to do so.
With that in mind, here are ten women in movies who you really would not want to mess with…

Although I absolutely love horror as a genre, even I have to admit that I get tired of watching the same old thing. After all, a person can only watch so many remakes, knock-offs, and rehashed ideas before they’re really craving something a little different. American Mary – the latest offering from twin sister directors Jen and Sylvia Soska (Dead Hooker in a Trunk) -- presents horror fans with the chance to explore territory that’s somewhat familiar, but in a way that’s modern, fresh, and totally in step with some of today’s hottest trends in body modification.
The plot follows the life of smart, attractive medical student Mary Mason (Katherine Isabelle). Like many young people, Mary is working hard to make something of herself and earn her medical degree. However, there are more than a few obstacles standing in her way and making it hard for her.

Directors/writers: Jen Soska and Sylvia Soska. Cast: Katharine Isabelle, Antonio Cupo, Tristan Risk, David Lovgren and Paula Lindberg. This horror film fan knows the Soska sisters, Jen and Sylvia, through their previous work, Dead Hooker in a Trunk. This viewer was not a fan of this early work. However, the Soska sisters latest endeavour is a vast improvement over this 2009 film. Their latest, American Mary, takes some time to build momentum, but the journey to the blood-soaked conclusion is still an enjoyable time. There are some weak moments involving shallow characterizations and poor tension between Bloody Mary (Katharine Isabelle) and the villains in this body horror piece; yet, American Mary is a compelling time, mostly due to actress Katharine Isabelle's solid performance. The film's story is diverse. Though, the central story focuses on Mary Mason and her difficulties with school and financial responsibilities. Mary hopes to be a surgeon,...

Jen Soska: Well, as a rule, we never ever write for a particular actor; we usually have types in mind, but when we’re trying to create characters, we try and put as much of that out of our minds as we can.

Even for a person with no tattoos or piercings and little interest in goth pin-up culture, there’s plenty of interest to explore in American Mary. The story of a struggling medical student who more or less accidentally becomes a body modification expert, the sophomore effort from twin filmmakers Jen and Sylvia Soska is polished and smart.
American Mary is significant step up in quality from their debut, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, even when it fails to dissect the larger sociological context or even the direct emotional ramifications of its young protagonist’s unconventional career choice. Alternately creepy and languid, incisive and aimless, American Mary examines a provocative subject, heralding the duo as a couple of the genre’s next great voices – that is, as soon as their follow-through proves as strong as their set-up.

American Mary
Directed by Jen and Sylvia Soska
Written by Jen and Sylvia Soska
2012, Canada
Steeped in pulp and hardcore imagery, horror allusions, and fetishistic gore, American Mary is a film that has emphatic reverence for its form. And as a collection of horror set pieces and bizarre characters, it is a success. Unfortunately, it’s not so successful as a cohesive and meaningful film.
Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) is a young med student enrolled in a surgery residency. She’s fantastic at what she does, but in great financial and academic distress. When putting in a resume at the local strip-joint, she’s recruited to stitch up a gunshot victim in the backroom. She’s rewarded handsomely, and almost immediately contacted for some unusual surgical services. And thus she enters the seedy world of body modification. Katharine Isabelle is best-known in the horror community as the titular character of Ginger Snaps.

The ever-growing cult of fans devoted to Jen and Sylvia Soska (aka "Twisted Twins") will not be disappointed by American Mary. Their previous effort, 2009's ultra low-budget grind house effort Dead Hooker in a Trunk, received a decent amount of attention for the identical wonder-duo from their fans, who have been curious and eager to see what the women could come up with when given the kind of creative leeway that an actual budget can provide. American Mary tells the cautionary tale of broke medical student turned illegal underground surgeon Mary Mason, portrayed by Katharine Isabelle (Ginger Snaps, Freddy vs. Jason), who was honored by FrightFest with their Best Actress award for her performance. A devoted student whose life revolves around practicing sutures on willing...

The Soska sisters in American Mary.
American Mary follows a medical student, called Mary Mason, who becomes disenchanted with the surgical world she once loved. Following her desire for easy money, she leaves medical school and is lured into the corrupt world of underground surgery.
.Soon afterwards, she finds herself executing a series of bizarre and gruelling emergency surgeries and is left traumatised by the actions of one of the more experienced surgeons. This leads her to take revenge, with horrific consequences.
The movie received critical acclaim last year from a number of high profile horror film festivals, including the Film4 FrightFest in the UK, the Toronto After Dark Festival and the Monster Fest in Australia.
The Canadian Soska sisters said they came up with the storyline, which they wrote, directed and acted in (including the stunts), at a time when they were experiencing severe difficulties with their own lives.

Doctors. Aside from the medical field, they've excelled in so many areas. Literature… Dr. Seuss. Sports… Dr. J. Sugary beverages… Dr. Pepper. Successful doctors are everywhere. And they've certainly left their mark in - and on - the horror genre.
Without a doubt more than a few movie doctors have gone off the deep end, many of them with some pretty colorful results. We've seen our favorite doctors and scientists do all kinds of nasty things to their human victims. Most take bodies apart, but a couple of them even put things back together, most notably Dr. Frankenstein. Yes, there have been some great ones, like Dr. Anton Phibes, Dr. Jekyll and Dr. Giggles, but here are a few of our other favorites: Seven of the Most Deviously Frightful Doctors in Horror Films.

Film crossovers have always intrigued me and, in spite of some pretty horrible existing examples in the world of horror, I do think it would be nice to see more in the future (assuming they’re done properly, that is).
Here are 10 potential ideas for crossovers in the horror genre (albeit some being a little far-fetched due to legal reasons) and possible plots for the movies in question:
10. The Hills Chainsaw Massacre (The Hills Have Eyes/Texas Chainsaw Massacre)
The murderous Hewitt family have been exposed by the law and forced away from their farm in Texas.
Heading West on the run, they stumble upon an abandoned nuclear testing village in the neighbouring state of New Mexico.
After settling there, they quickly realise that they are not alone.
Soon after, an all out battle ensues as nuclear mutants attempt to rid their homes of the intruding cannibalistic Hewitt family who do not take this lightly.

Last year I caught a darkly comedic yet emotionally jarring body-centric horror film called Excision, showing the twisted road an high school student/aspiring surgeon travels down by mixing strange fetishes, sisterly love, bad parenting, and awkward teenage years. Fast forward to 2013, and we’ve got another bodily horror film about an aspiring surgeon, except this time she uses her medicinal powers for evil after a series of unfortunate events. The film, titled American Mary, is directed by the Soska sisters (Jen/Sylvia), the same two Canadian sisters responsible for the recent grindhouse wannabe Dead Hooker In A Trunk. So yeah, it’s pretty much wholesome family entertainment.
But Ok, I shouldn’t unfairly compare the two films because one is about a surgeon who seriously isn’t ready for her craft yet has the delusion she’s a natural, and the other is about a top-of-the-class medical student with...

“Do you think I’m crazy?” This is a line of dialogue spoken by Mary Mason (Katharine Isabelle) at a pivotal and emotional moment towards the end of American Mary, the second film directed by Dead Hooker in a Trunk directors Jen and Sylvia Soska aka Twisted Twins. I bring this up because the crazy question is something I feel like asking my fellow horror fans now that I have seen this film.
For months now American Mary has been hyped like the second coming of horror. If you have an interest in the genre and are on twitter you cannot escape the maelstrom caused by the publicity. To be fair to the Soskas they do play a good game. They have used Twitter to reach their audience and interact with them a lot more than your typically aloof filmmaker that you find on there.

Debuting at FrightFest last year to excellent early reviews, American Mary has been on limited release here in the UK since last weekend, and is arriving on DVD and Blu-ray on our shores today.
The horror film festival favourite has been praised for its thrills and chills, with Jen and Sylvia Soska (a.k.a. the Twisted Twins) continuing to make a name for themselves in the genre.
We saw a great new trailer and set of posters just before the end of last year, and with its arrival on home entertainment today, Momentum have released a great new TV spot to get us all in the mood to go and pick it up off the shelves.
As you can imagine, the video below is a little bit bloody, and thus somewhat not suitable for work.

Stars: Katherine Isabelle, Julia Maxwell, Antonio Cupo, Paula Lindberg, Twan Holliday | Written and Directed by Jen Soska, Sylvia Soska
The Soska sisters, Jen and Sylvia (or the Twisted Twins as they liked to be called) made a splash in the horror genre with their 2009 debut feature Dead Hooker in a Trunk, a film which gained them an army of fans – including Eli Roth – eager for their next feature. This sleek, cold, emetic body-horror flick centres on Mary Mason, a brilliant, beautiful young doctor whose desperate need for money to continue her surgical studies drives her to find work in a Seattle sex club. Rapidly she drifts into a bizarre world of illegal "body enhancement", which takes in everything from cosmetic surgery via repair work after sadomasochistic accidents to taking drastic revenge on the teacher who rapes her. The co-directors, clearly admirers of early Cronenberg films, are identical Canadian twins. They make a memorable appearance as rich Germans so devoted to each other that they engage Mary to perform an operation by which they swap arms.

A film that promises an interesting, if emetic, take on the west's obsession with body image quickly becomes freakishly niche
Here is a body-horror noir, in-your-face and yet inert, written and directed by the Canadian twins Jen and Sylvia Soska, a hardcore-scary moviemaking duo who make a self-conscious joint cameo as German fetishists. The movie has touches of David Cronenberg and Takashi Miike and, at first, it looks interesting in a dry heave-inducing way, a satire of western infatuation with body image and the medical profession.
But then it seems to become a showcase for freaky body-modification tableaux, intended to sell through to a niche customer fanbase. Katharine Isabelle (star of the fondly remembered, cult werewolf drama Ginger Snaps) plays Mary Mason, a bright but broke medical student hoping to become a surgeon. After a brutal sexual assault, Mary discovers she has the expertise and temperament for revenge, and finds...
