With a hiss of brakes, and a rush of steam, the next phase of SFW9’s launch is engaged. We have lots and lots to tell you, so settle down, grab your beverage of choice, put your feet up, and let’s go!
That’s right folks… Its time to start planning for SFW9, coming to you next March in Wales and we have a little bit of bad news but a massive whole bunch of good news to soften that blow. First things first though: there are only 18, yes 18 rooms left on site for the weekend so if you don’t have your tickets then you better get on that now. So first off here is a little comment from Sfw themselves with a little bad news…

When I think of some of my favorite B films of the 1970s, my mind tends to drift towards the works of the late filmmaker William Girdler. This man made nine movies in six years before his tragic death in ’78 at the age of thirty; chief among them Abby (’74), Grizzly (’76), and Day of the Animals (’77). Now, quantity obviously doesn’t equal quality, and he made a few outright stinkers. But he was exciting to me because he became a better, more confident filmmaker with each film; this is especially evident with his final release, The Manitou (1978), your typical ancient Native American little person demon growing out of the back of a woman’s neck who fights the heroes in space with laser beams kind of flick. You know the type.
Independently produced, The Manitou was released by Avco Embassy in late April, with a June rollout across North America, and worldwide the following year.

As a kid growing up I was a huge horror fan, I loved reading scary novels – mainly ones I really shouldn’t have been allowed to like Graham Masterton’s Family Portrait; watching the late-night BBC double-bills or renting all the Friday the 13th and Nightmare on Elm Street films from the local video shop even though I wasn’t over 18; or watching Are You Afraid of the Dark? on terrestrial TV – where it suffered censorship and missing episodes – I adored horror and still do. But one thing I never got into was Goosebumps. Maybe it was because the books came too late for me – as I said I was already reading adult horror fiction...

In the world of horror cinema, the best way to fight a monster–be it supernatural, human, or natural one–is with a character that possesses special knowledge and skills. These experts, recruited into battle by other characters or colliding with the conflict intentionally, are the savants of the horror world.
Examples of savant characters include David Warner’s bat expert Phillip Payne in Nightwing, Zelda Rubinstein’s spiritual medium Tangina in Poltergeist, Matthew McConaughey’s dragon slayer Denton Van Zan in Reign of Fire, Lin Shaye’s paranormal investigator Elise Rainier in Insidious, and Otto Jespersen’s monster killer Hans in Trollhunter.
This article, divided into three sections based on what type of monstrous force is being fought, focuses on the greatest savant characters the horror genre has to offer.

My advance reading copy of Shivers VII didn’t include an introduction, and the table of contents gave no indication there would be one added to the finished and published edition. I’ve gotten used to anthologies leading off with some sort of mission statement or manifesto (sometimes, these missives are better than the stories that follow), but I guess hitting the seventh entry in a series indicates you know what you’re doing, and readers should know what to expect. After plowing through the 26 stories in Shivers VII, I’d say agree that no introduction is necessary. Like the six volumes before it, this is an anthology of rare quality, a collection of contemporary fiction that provides an excellent snapshot of where the genre stands today, and a roadmap to where it’s going. However, it’s important to remember where the genre came from even as it continues to move forward,...

Graham Masterton is an Edgar Award-winning writer of horror, mystery and non-fiction. Several of his books, including his first, The Manitou, have been adapted for film. He's known for intense, disturbing fiction, and emphasizes character and emotional connection in storytelling. Mr. Masterton took some time out to talk exclusively to FEARnet about his upcoming work and his thoughts on writing.
You have several new works debuting, one of which is Community. What is that novel about?
Community tells the story of a young man who is returning home to San Francisco with his girlfriend when they are involved in a crash on the freeway which appears to have been caused deliberately. He wakes up in a clinic in a small town in the foothills of the Cascade Mountains, but he has completely lost his memory. He has no idea who he is or what happened to him. He doesn't even...

Last week I reviewed The Wicked, a nasty little bit of throwback-style horror from the pen of James Newman. Whenever a book grabs me like The Wicked did – shakes me up and reminds me of why I spend so much time reading this crazy genre – I like to talk to the writer, get inside his or her head and find out what led them to make the choices they made in writing it. Luckily for me, Newman was more than willing to answer a few of my questions.
In the afterword to your novel The Wicked, you talk about the influence of the horror of the 1980s. Which novels and writers of that era influence you in general and The Wicked in particular?
Oh, man. How much time do you have?
Here's my Top Ten: The House Next Door by Anne Rivers-Siddons (that one was the first "adult" horror novel I ever read,...

Filmmaker Mark Steensland has been in our newsfeed quite a bit recently. Between the world premiere of his short film The Weeping Woman this weekend at Motor City Nightmares and the news that he had just acquired the rights to the novel Tengu, we thought it was time to talk to the man himself and find out more about his projects.
Dread Central: This spring has been shaping up to be huge for you, first the world premiere of your new short film, The Weeping Woman, and now the announcement that your Chang Shao Trading Co. recently acquired the rights to the novel Tengu. You have to be riding pretty high, right?
Mark Steensland: Yes. It’s all good. We have a lot of irons in the fire right now, but that’s a requirement these days because the wheels in the film business tend to turn slowly.

Filmmaker Mark Steensland is certainly on a roll. Fresh on the heels of his short film The Weeping Woman hitting the festival circuit this spring comes word that Steensland and screenwriter Rick Hautala have acquired the screen rights to Graham Masterton’s novel Tengu via their Chang Shao Trading Company shingle.
From the original novel's synopsis:
In Japanese mythology Tengu is the most terrible of all demons, a living force of evil that infects its followers with the mad strength of the berserk and the capacity to survive attack from any weapon. At the close of World War II the Tengu was Japan's most terrifying secret weapon. Now the demon is unleashed again, this time in a diabolical plot to wreak vengeance on America for the mega destruction of Hiroshima. A terrifying novel of nuclear revenge.
No word yet on how Steensland and Hautala plan to approach the story or any other details yet.

There was a time when the name Leisure Books was synonymous with horror novels. When it came to mass market paperbacks, Leisure ruled the horror world. Authors like Ed Lee, Craig Spector, Brian Keene, Richard Laymon, Graham Masterton, Jack Ketchum, and even Stephen King have published with Leisure, which was owned by Dorchester Publishing.
Under other lines Dorchester publishes romance, thrillers, westerns - you name it. However, in 2009 things began to go sideways at Dorchester. Within months the company as it was known was gone: sales and editorial staff fired, reports of shipments to stores and authors delayed, creditors piling up along with unpaid royalties to authors.
