Pedro Pascal has joined Ridley Scott’s upcoming “Gladiator” sequel, TheWrap has confirmed.
The previously announced cast already includes recent Oscar nominee Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Barry Keoghan and Connie Nielsen, who returns from the first movie. “Stranger Things” breakout Joseph Quinn is also in negotiations.
Not much is known about the sequel to Scott’s 2000 Oscar-winning blockbuster, although it’s thought to follow Maximus’ son (played by Mescal). The original film, of course, followed Maximus (Russell Crowe), a man whose family was taken from him and who went from slave to gladiator to revolutionary. What a movie.

The MCU made Oscar history this year as Angela Bassett earned the franchise its first-ever acting nomination for her supporting turn as Queen Ramonda in “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.” This was the sequel to “Black Panther,” which was the first film in the franchise to reap a Best Picture bid.
So often, the MCU is consigned to visual effects and sound categories at the Academy Awards. For both “Black Panther” movies to break through in key categories (plus double wins for Ruth E. Carter‘s costume design), is remarkable. Still, though, the artist and filmmaking talent on show in the MCU is often overlooked purely because they are superhero movies. With that in mind, here are five Oscars categories where the MCU deserves more attention.

Russell Crowe, the 59-year-old New Zealand-born Oscar-winning actor, admitted in a recent interview that he’s following news of Sir Ridley Scott crewing up for a “Gladiator” sequel just like the rest of us.
He said he has no inside track for what to expect, but paid his former director a nice compliment, saying, “One of the positives about it, for sure, is that it is Ridley because he’s going to want to go back into that world and create something [on] the same level of spectacle as the first one.”
Then he gave us a peek into his human side, saying what I imagine any one of us would feel if we were in his position. “The only thing that I really feel about it is slightly jealous, you know?” he quipped.
“Because I was a much younger man, obviously,” he continued, “and it was a huge experience in my life.

Ridley Scott's "Gladiator" sequel just got even cooler: Deadline is reporting that Denzel Washington is finalizing negotiations to star in the upcoming sequel to Scott's Best Picture winning 2000 epic.
Washington is reportedly set to play a "bad-ass" role that Scott crafted just for him, and Deadline's sources say the "Training Day" and "Malcolm X" star became interested after reading the script. The film's screenplay is written by David Scarpa, who has worked with Scott before on projects including "All The Money in the World." While the nature of Washington's role hasn't been revealed, previous reporting indicates that the new movie will follow Lucius, the nephew of Joaquin Phoenix's villainous ruler Commodus.
The Hollywood veteran isn't the first person to join the cast, although Washington definitely adds even more gravitas to the already-exciting project. Paul Mescal, the Oscar-nominated actor whose short filmography has included fantastic turns in "Normal People,...

The cast is shaping up for Sir Ridley Scott’s sequel to his Oscar-winning Roman action-drama “Gladiator.” The latest addition, according to The Hollywood Reporter, is Barry Keoghan, the 30-year-old (but can pass for 15) Irish actor recently nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his turn in “The Banshees of Inisherin.” His previous work includes creepy supporting roles in “The Killing of a Sacred Deer,” “The Green Knight,” and a quick appearance as the Joker in “The Batman.”
Keoghan is thought to be playing Emperor Publius Septimus Geta. I just looked the guy up on Wikipedia and I think I just had the ending of “Gladiator 2” spoiled in the opening paragraph, so advise against this! I suspect he will be the villain of the new picture.

Keoghan will play Emperor Geta in the David Scarpa-scripted film; while there was a Roman emperor with the name it’s unclear how directly the movie will draw from actual events. Mescal will be playing Lucius, the son of Lucilla.

Barry Keoghan, the Oscar-nominated actor who is right at home in a good period piece, is in talks to join Paul Mescal in Ridley Scott’s untitled Gladiator sequel, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
Scott is directing the sequel to his 2000 historical epic that starred Russell Crowe as Maximus, a former general forced into becoming a gladiator under the rule of the patricidal self-appointed Roman emperor Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix). The movie won the Oscar for best picture, while Crowe took home the statuette for best actor, among the five wins for the lauded movie. Neither Crowe’s nor Phoenix’s character survived the proceedings.
The sequel will star Aftersun Oscar nominee Mescal, who is said to be playing Lucius, the son of Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) and the nephew of Phoenix’s Commodus. (Spencer Treat Clark played the role in the original film.)
If a deal makes, Keoghan will play a character named Emperor Geta.

Just like its titular hero, Batgirl never gives up. The movie was infamously canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery president David Zaslav right as it neared completion and buried under legal stipulations that would prevent it from ever being screened in theaters. But leaks and fan-made tributes to the film continue unabated, revealing massive interest for a movie that Zaslav determined would be better served as a 90 million tax write-off.
Now we have a new leak, and it’s one of the most compelling yet. The clip originally comes from the Instagram account of stunt person Emely Cartagena (then tweeted by actor Ivory Aquino), who doubled for Batgirl star Leslie Grace during action sequences. It shows Cartagena as Batgirl leaping from a ledge, doing a wobbly flip, and landing on a bright red Christmas tree, where she brings the whole thing down in front of fleeing partygoers.

Not every comic book or superhero movie warrants the call for awards in the same way that last year’s “Spider-Man: No Way Home” did. That felt like such a huge game-changer in terms of being a turnaround for a box office that was previously thought dead due to the effects of the pandemic.
“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” starring Benedict Cumberbatch is well on its way to becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2022 after just a few weeks, having crossed 300 million domestically and 700 million globally. Much of that business may have come from the idea that it continues some of the “multiversal” ideas that played such a large part in “No Way Home.” But can it overcome the Oscars’ superhero stigma?
SEEBox office: 3rd week on top for ‘Doctor Strange,’ while ‘Downton Abbey’ crumbles
The film is actually more of a continuation of the Emmy-winning “WandaVision” limited series on Disney+.

The latest epic in the Marvel film canon, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, delivers the goods on so many levels one might need the skill of the good doctor himself to be able to navigate them all effectively.
This time around, Stephen Strange finds himself pitted against an adversary intent on unlocking (and subsequently destabilizing) the Multiverse. To stop this cataclysmic event from occurring, Dr. Strange seeks the helps of both old and new allies as he, himself traverses these alternate realities in an effort to restore order to the Multiverse.
Replacing Scott Derrickson (who helmed the first film in 2016) as director, Sam Raimi brings the “horror” vibe in spades to the table with this second film. Fans of Raimi’s “Evil Dead” films will be thrilled with the numerous nods (stay through until the end of the credits) to that series as well as the stylistic flourishes...

One of the planes of existence in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” features a swirling vortex that has a definite resemblance to the Everything Bagel in “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” and it’s an unfortunate coincidence, as the Daniels’ boldly inventive indie movie explodes with wit and nerve and character – most of which are prominently missing from this latest MCU adventure.
The follow-up to 2016’s “Doctor Strange” hits the ooh-and-aah marks we expect from a well-crafted Marvel adventure, but even with Sam Raimi at the helm, this entry goes heavy on the spectacle but light on the humanity.
Raimi’s success with the original “Spider-Man” trilogy laid the groundwork — for better or worse — for the contemporary wave of superhero sagas, and while his brand of visual flair and scary-funny jolts serve the material well, the screenplay by “Loki” creator Michael Waldron piles on so many alternative universes,...

Back in 2018, news broke that Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson was to stay aboard for Marvel Studios’ planned sequel to its 2016 blockbuster, with Benedict Cumberbatch also reprising his role as the Sorcerer Supreme.
Entitled Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the project was touted as the MCU’s first horror movie, which seemed about right because Derrickson had originally come into the fold with a background in genre filmmaking. He’d already helmed the likes of Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, so he could likely balance the craft of unsettling audiences whilst maintaining a firm grasp on the Master of the Mystic Arts’ ongoing evolution.
Except it didn’t work out. Derrickson left the sequel in January, 2020 citing “creative differences” along with his writing partner C. Robert Cargill. A month later, Loki scribe Michael Waldron was brought in to write on the film, and he was also...

When it comes to video game-to-movie adaptations, we are not exactly in the best territory of cinema, as often the question isn’t, ‘which are the best?’ but rather ‘which are the least awful?’ Often the issue is that you never get a feeling anyone onboard was a big fan of the material itself or even remotely familiar with it, and after misfires like Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros. and Hitman you find slim pickings, with only Duncan Jones’ vastly underrated Warcraft – The Beginning standing as the sole great offering. Well, that all changes with this giddy take on the 2016 game Detective Pikachu and Satoshi Tajiri’s international sensation on which it is inspired.
The world of Pokémon is one beloved by various age groups and the fanbase remains as invested as they ever have and in Rob Letterman’s Pokémon Detective Pikachu fans finally get the live-action film they have waited years to see.

I’ll be the first to admit that I wasn’t particularly excited when Ryan Reynolds was selected to voice the titular character in Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. In my mind, his voice is the ‘X’ factor that brings Deadpool to life on the big screen, a smarmy rasp that’s perfect for R-rated cynicism, but not exactly ideal for the first live-action take on everyone’s favorite electric mouse. So imagine my surprise that in a film full of colorful CGI creatures, Reynold’s Pikachu performance is its sole spark of life; a critical hit in a flurry of misses.
For the first act of the film, I was fully on board. Director Rob Letterman does a great job introducing us to the world of Pokemon, where children are given a pocket-sized monster and expected to travel far and wide, catching and battling other critters to prove who’s best.

If you’ve been keeping up with video game film adaptations, then you are probably familiar with both Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog. The former is a lighthearted fantasy mystery film, which follows Tim Goodman, a former Pokémon trainer who must team up with a talking Pikachu in order to solve the disappearance of his missing father. The latter, on the other hand, is an upcoming adventure comedy film starring James Marsden and Jim Carrey, complete with a CGI version of Sonic that has received widespread criticism from fans and critics alike.
While Pokémon devotees were originally off-put by some of Detective Pikachu‘s realistic takes on Mr. Mime and Jigglypuff, it seems the fanbase has come around since, and early reviews and reactions to the final film have been positive. The same can’t be said for Sega’s blue blur. Just days after the first trailer launched,...

Oscar-nominated cinematographer John Mathieson was offered the gig to shoot “Sonic the Hedgehog,” but when he saw the new trailer for the Jim Carrey vehicle, he was glad he turned it down. The British Dp, a two-time Academy Award nominee for lensing “Gladiator” and “Phantom of the Opera,” shot “Detective Pikachu” on film, a choice he told Newsweek was far superior to the CGI used by “Sonic.”
“After watching the trailer, I thought, I’m so glad we don’t look like that,” Mathieson told Newsweek. “If all we’re talking about is how these two films look, our film is better than ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ and I’m sorry, I don’t care who I upset by saying that, but I think it looks better. … There’s no reason why you can’t shoot a film like [‘Detective Pikachu’] or ‘Sonic the Hedgehog’ on film. If you had, [‘Sonic the Hedgehog’] would look more realistic.

A lot of people have opinions about the “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie trailer that dropped on Tuesday, and none of them are good. That includes John Mathieson, the director of photography for rival video game-based movie “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.”
“Funny enough, I was offered [‘Sonic the Hedgehog’] and after watching the trailer I thought I’m so glad we don’t look like that,” Mathieson told Newsweek in a recent interview.
Mathieson believes his movie has a visual edge because it was shot on traditional film while “Sonic” was apparently filmed digitally. Digital cameras don’t capture colors well, he said, especially blues and cyan.

Is there a Pokémon whose power is to move through your eyeballs and brain and then leave absolutely no impression? Because that was my experience of watching “Detective Pikachu,” a CGI-heavy live-action/animation hybrid based on the popular game-anime-manga franchise (and specifically on the eponymous Nintendo game).
And yes, as someone who has never played, read or watched anything Pokémon-related before now, I know that this movie wasn’t made for me. (That’s why we had expert Johnnie Jungleguts share his thoughts on the film as well.) After trying to make head or tail (or snout or blowhole) of the proceedings here, I can understand the confusion of someone attempting to keep up with “Avengers: Endgame” without having watched any of the previous Marvel Cinematic Universe titles.

Hollywood’s quest to create a genuinely compelling, well-crafted video game movie continues this year with the back-to-back release of Detective Pikachu and Sonic the Hedgehog.
Both titles are undoubtedly based on legendary, time-honored franchises, but while one has garnered praise for its visual effects and its overly faithful interpretation of those iconic pocket monsters, Sonic the Hedgehog has got people talking for all the wrong reasons.
It has Sonic speeding down highways at 700mph and Jim Carrey (!) as the sneering Dr. Robotnik, but early reactions suggest Paramount’s live-action flick will struggle to win over the fans. Indeed, cinematographer John Mathieson recently admitted that he has precisely no regrets about choosing Detective Pikachu over Sonic.

Ryan Reynolds has a new movie coming out, and in the teaser, he’s holding his balls. His Poke’ balls, that is. Reynolds is essentially playing himself, but in Pikachu format, in the first new Poke’ movie in quite a while. The reboot that begged not to be made. Granted, the trailers have been visually stunning, and if the lines are written well, Reynolds’ patented smart-alec delivery could still bring this pot to a boil.
In case you haven’t seen the other trailers, or don’t know about poke’mon, or Pikachu, or haven’t had a TV for the last 30 years, Poke’mon, or pocket monsters, are anime’ creatures that you can capture via a red and white Poke’ ball, and then train them to battle Other poke’mon, and Pikachu has been about the only thing that never changes, only saying “peeka-choo” about a thousand different ways,...

Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, Jack Lowden, Joe Alwyn, David Tennant, Guy Pearce, Maria Dragus, Eileen O’Higgins, Liah O’Prey, Izuka Hoyle, Brendan Coyle, Martin Compston, Gemma Chan, Ismael Cruz Córdova | Written by Beau Willimon | Directed by Josie Rourke
Mary Queen of Scots, directed by Josie Rourke, is a remake/retelling of the 1971 film of the same name Mary, Queen of Scots directed by Charles Jarrott. Rourke’s film stars two heavyweight leading actress titans of their craft in Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie, as opposing queens Mary Stuart and Queen Elizabeth I battling out for the reign. This twenty-nineteen rendition is a highly intense scorcher of deliberating venomous proposal and political promise. Wrapped in a deeply controversial and disputed historical subject matter with questionable accuracy that thankfully doesn’t derail an otherwise immersive film.

Cinematographer John Mathieson had to “hit the ground running” with “Mary Queen of Scots.” After taking over at the last minute for Seamus McGarvey, Mathieson had to conceive of how to shoot a historical epic on a modest $25 million budget. Watch our exclusive video interview with Mathieson above.
See Saoirse Ronan Interview: ‘Mary Queen of Scots’
Directed by Josie Rourke, this Focus Features release centers on the rivalry between Mary Stuart (Saoirse Ronan) of Scotland and Queen Elizabeth I (Margot Robbie) of England. Though $25 million is certainly nothing to scoff at when it comes to making a movie, it gets stretched pretty thin “when you have to have two countries going to war against each other,” Mathieson says.
No stranger to gigantic productions, Mathieson knew he would have to “address things as they came along.” He explains, “You go to your producers and director and say, we need to go big this day.

It’s never fair for one film to be compared to another. They weren’t made to be in direct competition with each other. Still, sometimes it’s just apt. The worst thing that could have happened to Mary Queen of Scots was how fresh and unique The Favourite ended up being. This period piece just can’t match up, coming hot on the heels of that one. Regardless of the comparison, it falls short of its intended goals, despite a powerhouse one two punch of Margot Robbie and especially Saorise Ronan. Considering the potential here, it’s certainly a disappointment. Ronan does her best, but she can’t save the day. The film is a biographical drama, centering on Mary Stuart (Ronan) and her relationship with cousin Elizabeth I (Robbie), the Queen of England. Mainly a biopic of Mary, it follows her as she becomes the Queen of France...

Camerimage, the weeklong celebration of cinematography in Bydgoszcz, Poland, comes to a close today by handing out its prestigious Frog prizes. The big winner was South Korean drama “The Fortress,” which won the top prize, the Golden Frog, in the Main Competition. The film directed by Dong-Hyuk Hwang and lensed by Ji Yong Kim was a massive hit in its home country in late 2017 and has since been released in 28 countries, including the U.S., reaching 3.8 million viewers worldwide.
The competition jury gave the Silver Frog to cinematographer Łukasz Żal for “Cold War” and the Bronze Frog to director-cinematographer Alfonso Cuarón for “Roma.” With over 900 cinematographers from around the world in attendance, many voting members of the Asc, Camerimage is an important bellwether for the Oscar race for Best Cinematography. The silver and bronze prizes should be a big boost for the two black-and-white films angling for Oscar nominations.

Check out the first trailer for Mary Queen Of Scots, starring Saoirse Ronan and Margot Robbie. The film is directed by Josie Rourke (artistic director of The Donmar Warehouse).
Mary Queen Of Scots explores the turbulent life of the charismatic Mary Stuart (Ronan). Queen of France at 16 and widowed at 18, Mary defies pressure to remarry. Instead, she returns to her native Scotland to reclaim her rightful throne. But Scotland and England fall under the rule of the compelling Elizabeth I (Robbie). Each young Queen beholds her “sister” in fear and fascination. Rivals in power and in love, and female regents in a masculine world, the two must decide how to play the game of marriage versus independence.
Determined to rule as much more than a figurehead, Mary asserts her claim to the English throne, threatening Elizabeth’s sovereignty. Betrayal, rebellion, and conspiracies within each court imperil both thrones – and change the course of history.
