Amid a fertile alternative music scene in the U.K., spurred on by a flurry of new independent labels, bands like Echo & the Bunnymen had to work harder to stand out from the pack. The austere, post-punk minimalism of the group’s first three albums earned them critical acclaim and a cult following, but by 1984 their sound—Joy Division as fronted by Jim Morrison, if you will—was in need of retooling. Was there space for another scrappy, dour foursome alongside more established acts like Siouxsie and the Banshees, an ascendant U2, and unique sounds from the likes of Cocteau Twins and Depeche Mode?
Echo & the Bunnymen’s fourth album, Ocean Rain, would prove to be their shining moment. The quality of the songwriting ensures its status as a classic, separating it from both the band’s more uneven earlier works and their patchy, self-titled follow-up from 1987.

Just over a year ago, the Peacock streaming service announced they were teaming up with genre filmmaker James Wan for a series adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here) – and even at the time, it was clear that they wouldn’t be keeping the Stinger title, because the show was being referred to as the Untitled Ian McCulloch Project, since Yellowstone consulting producer Ian McCulloch was on board to write and executive produce the show. The project is now going by the title Teacup, and not only has Peacock given it a straight-to-series order (allowing it to bypass the usual pilot process), but Deadline reports that Yvonne Strahovski, whose credits include Chuck, The Predator, The Handmaid’s Tale, Stateless, Dexter, The Tomorrow War, and He’s Out There, has signed on to play the series regular role of Maggie Chenoweth. Strahovski will also be a producer on the show.

Ray Shulman, a co-founding member and bassist of the influential prog-rock band Gentle Giant, has died at the age of 73.
According to his brother and bandmate, Derek, Ray passed away on March 30th after “he bravely battled a long illness.”
Having grown up in a musical family, Ray and brothers Phil and Derek started their first band together in the early 1960s. Performing as Simon Dupree and the Big Sound, the band quickly earned a record deal with Emi and achieved a top 10 single with their song “Kites.” At one point, their lineup even featured a young piano player named Reginald Dwight, who went on to find fame as Elton John.
Simon Dupree and the Big Sound’s existence was short-lived, as the Shulman brothers became disillusioned by the music industry and being seen as one-hit wonders. After unsuccessfully attempting to release music under the moniker The Moles, the group broke up.

Deadline understands that execs at Peacock were happy with both shows creatively but they just didn’t find the requisite audience to justify further seasons.
One Of Us Is Lying, which is based on Karen M. McManus’ novel, launched in October 2021 and was the first Peacock pilot to go to series. It was renewed for a second season earlier this year that aired in October 2022.
Vampire Academy was handed a straight-to-series order in May 2021 and premiered in September 2022.
Both shows come from Universal Studio Group.

Exclusive: Peacock has scored another drama project from Julie Plec and her Vampire Academy co-exec producer Adam Starks as its development strategy kicks into second gear.
The NBCU streamer is developing Freeman, a mystery drama series set in a small, picturesque town in Georgia, from Plec and Starks. Peacock is understood to have won the project in a highly competitive battle and has set up a mini writers’ room.
Freeman comes from Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, where Plec is under an overall deal.
It follows a family, which moves to a small, picturesque town in Georgia after acquiring a lucrative inheritance, including the mysterious house known as Freeman Manor. It’s soon discovered that there are mysteries and darkness hidden within the walls, and the town at large, that go back generations.

The Manson Brothers Show is hosted by the writers/stars of the horror comedy The Manson Brothers Midnight Zombie Massacre – Chris Margetis (Stone Manson) and Mike Carey (Skull Manson) – so it seems very fitting that they’re getting the new year started with a discussion of a zombie movie. A movie that is simply called Zombie. It’s director Lucio Fulci‘s 1979 flesh-eating classic, which you can watch at This Link… and to find out what the Manson Brothers think of it, check out the video embedded above!
Directed by Lucio Fulci from a screenplay written by Elisa Briganti and Dardano Sacchetti, Zombie has the following synopsis: Tisa Farrow investigates the disappearance of her father after his boat is found abandoned, in New York Harbor. With the help of a reporter, Ian McCulloch, their search leads to the small Caribbean island of Matool, where a strange disease has turned the inhabitants into blood-thirsty zombies.

Joseph Mawle is trading Middle-earth for the Yellowstone universe: The Rings of Power alum has joined the cast of the upcoming Yellowstone prequel 1923, our sister site Variety reports.

A month and a half after ordering a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake from Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller, the Peacock streaming service has now announced that they’re also teaming up with genre filmmaker James Wan for a series adaptation of the 1988 bestseller Stinger, written by Robert R. McCammon (pick up a copy Here). The series apparently won’t be keeping the Stinger title, because Peacock and the producers are currently referring to it as the Untitled Ian McCulloch Project, since Yellowstone consulting producer Ian McCulloch is on board to write and executive produce the show.
McCammon’s novel has the following description: The story takes place during a single twenty-four hour period in Inferno, Texas. Inferno is a town in trouble, driven to the brink by racial tension, gang violence, and a collapsing economy. But things can always get worse, and they do so with astonishing speed...

“The boat can leave now. Tell the crew.” With these words, a horror classic was born. Zombie (1979) was the first Lucio Fulci film that assaulted my eyeballs, And it was the first zombie flick I ever saw. Heady stuff for a quivering ten-year-old, but it proved to be the perfect gateway to the splattery splendors of Italian terror, a door that will forever remain ajar.
Let me be as straightforward as I can: if you’re a fan of Fulci but haven’t caught this yet, you can forget about the surrealism of The Beyond (1981) or the Lovecraftian flourishes of City of the Living Dead (1980). This is Fulci driving a simple narrative right through the hearts of horror lovers everywhere, coming out the back bloodied and unbound, unapologetic in its mission statement to horrify and repulse. Mission accomplished.

“The patient’s screaming is disturbing me. Perform removal of vocal chords!”
Doctor Butcher M.D. screens Midnights this weekend (August 12th and 13th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.
Doctor Butcher M.D. (“Medical Deviate” – aka: Zombie Holocaust), is a hybrid of the dumbshits-go-to-the-jungle-and are-eaten-by cannibals genre (think Cannibal Holocaust), with some living dead shenanigans thrown in. It’s similar to Lucio Fulci’s Zombie, but twice as cheesy and three times as funny. The gore effects are completely over the top and hilarious; disembowelments, impalements, slit throats, eye gouging, machetes through the head, death by outboard motor – all the stuff to keep the Late Night Grindhouse crowd happy.
Ian McCulloch returns from Zombie and his dialogue and delivery are really funny, with the good doctor spewing such lines as, “I could easily kill you now,...

You might have seen your birthday party reflected in their gleaming surfaces once upon a time. As they sang, their glazed eyes may have caught your own lively ones, and perhaps you noticed a little life in the pupils of the animatronic animal on stage. From Classic FM to Spiral, Ian McCulloch reveals his cultural picks of the moment
Best known as the frontman of post-punk rockers Echo & the Bunnymen, Ian McCulloch was born and raised in Liverpool and formed the band in 1978. Their 1980 debut album, Crocodiles, garnered both critical admiration and chart success and McCulloch was nicknamed "Mac the Mouth" by the press for his outspoken comments aimed at the likes of Bono and the Smiths. The Bunnymen released four more albums, including 1984's Ocean Rain which spawned singles such as The Killing Moon and Silver, but in 1988 McCulloch quit to go solo, releasing two albums under his own name before taking a break from recording. In the mid-1990s he resumed his creative relationship with the band but continued to work on his own material, recently featuring on Some Kind of Nothingness by Manic Street Preachers. Holy Ghosts, a double CD combining orchestral...

Of all the post-Avengers projects available to him, why did Joss Whedon choose an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing?
In September 2011, Joss Whedon was days from finishing principal photography on The Avengers and planning an anniversary trip to Italy with his producer wife, Kai Cole. As he tells it, Cole suggested they ditch the holiday and use the time to finally make the Much Ado About Nothing adaptation Whedon had been planning since he’d heard Amy Acker and Alexis Denisof as Beatrice and Benedick at one of the regular Shakespeare readings Whedon and Cole held at their California home.
With the means (Cole and Whedon’s Bellwether production company was set up for just such micro-budget projects), the location (the couple’s Santa Monica house, designed by Cole), the cast (plucked from his regular Whedonverse troupe), and the will (Whedon’s never...

A mysterious, seemingly abandoned yacht which has drifted into a New York harbour is inspected by two police officers, one of whom is attacked and killed by a hulking member of the undead, who has stowed away inside. It transpires that the boat’s owner is a scientist who is currently holed up on a tropical island somewhere in the Caribbean. The scientist’s daughter (Tisa ‘sister of Mia’ Farrow) teams up with an English reporter (Ian McCulloch) to track down the man, who is suffering from a strange, unidentifiable disease.
Arriving in the tropics, the intrepid duo hook up with another couple who assist them in finding the scientist’s location. Having since succumbed to his ailment, the scientist’s colleague Dr. David Menard (Richard Johnson), is...
