Portia de Rossi before Ellen DeGeneres era was a woman with heartache. In her new memoir "Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain", the "Ally McBeal" star revealed her bitter past where her ex-husband ran off with her sister-in-law after three years of marriage.
Portia, who has legally changed her last name to DeGeneres, was married to documentary filmmaker Mel Metcalfe between 1996 to 1999. Metcalfe left her for Renee Kappos, wife of Portia's older brother Michael Rogers. They ended up marrying each other.
Speaking of how his brother's wife came to a relationship with her husband, Portia recalled, "He had married his longtime girlfriend, Renee, just before leaving Australia and the two newlyweds moved into an apartment in the same Melrose Place-style complex that was home to me and Mel."
"The fact that Renee would wear skimpy, lacy underwear clearly visible underneath her oversized, gaping overalls should have indicated to...

Apparently, before she was Ellen Degeneres‘ wife, Portia de Rossi was married to a man…until her husband ran off with her sister-in-law. Married to filmmaker Mel Metcalfe in 1996, de Rossi was stunned three years later when Metcalfe left her for brother Michael’s wife Renee Kappos. “When Mel left me and Renee suddenly sabotaged her marriage to my brother to be with Mel, Brother and I were left idiotically scratching our heads in disbelief,” de Rossi reveals. Despite the unexpected affair, however, Portia already knew that her days as a straight woman were nearing an end. “By the end of our first year together, despite my desire to be attracted to him, my latent fear of my real sexuality was simmering and about to boil,” Portia now admits. Seems like some blessings come in disguise, or by the name of Mel Metcalfe.

Before Portia de Rossi was happily married to Ellen DeGeneres, she was married to a man -- Mel Metcalfe. And then, he was married to her brother's wife.
De Rossi opens up about the family drama in her new memoir, 'Unbearable Lightness: A Story of Loss and Gain.' Having both lost their marriages -- de Rossi was married to Metcalfe between 1996 and 1999 -- de Rossi details what went down (via RadarOnline), and how she and her brother dealt.
"When my husband left me, my brother moved in to my place... My husband ran off with his wife, so we kept each other company and we liked to go out for margaritas and Mexican food to commiserate," she writes in the book.

According to the New York Observer, a memoir from Portia de Rossi is in the works. So, it looks like Ellen won't be the only published author in the power couple.
Apparently, a head of William Morris Endeavor has already begun sending out proposals from Portia to book editors, including a writing sample relating to her highly-publicized battle with anorexia, which was at its worst during her Ally McBeal days.
Obviously, this is exciting news, as most of us would be interested in learning more about Portia's life pre-Ellen (and, yeah, we want to know all about her life now, too). After all, she was voted No. 1 on this year's Hot 100. However, it's sort of nice to know that someone as high-profile as Portia has to actually put work into getting a book deal.
Even though we'd still probably read her just talking about her morning routines with her wife (breakfast?...
