“The Humans” continued its impressive theater awards season streak last night with a big win at the New York Drama Critics’ Circle. Stephen Karam’s chilling family drama was named the best play of the season by 22 theater critics from various publications in New York metropolitan area. The award carries a cash prize of $2,500, made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation. Meanwhile, “Shuffle Along, or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed,” the last production to open in the 2015–16 Broadway season, took home best musical. So as we go down our Halloween Countdown list, yesterday I reconsidered the-not-even-remotely classic 1974 Exorcist rip-off Abby and, as you know me by now, I try as much as I can to avoid the obvious. I don’t think there is a singular film-maker I’ve found myself having written more about than Australia’s own Dr. George Miller. And now, writing this, I’m still not quite certain of the best way to introduce him, if indeed such a thing is necessary at all. The last of cinema’s thoroughly modern myth-makers – those implicit, anthropological followers of Campbell and Jung, before George Lucas arrived and gunked up the works with his clunky concretizations – and a college lecturer on the indelible powers of those myths on our collectives psyches and their places in modern cinema, in his spare time. The single-handed spokesman for Australia’s burgeoning film industry, and their self-proclaimed answer to our own Steven Spielberg – although, that’s an arguable comparison, I think.
