While reboots and sequel series are all the rage these days, Seth Rogen dashed hopes Wednesday that his beloved, single-season comedy “Freaks and Geeks” might get such a treatment.
“I know enough now not to f— with that, to just let it be good and not try to go revisit it,” he told People. “Just let it exist.”
He added that he believes his co-stars from the 1999 series – many of whom have gone on to great Hollywood successes, like James Franco, Jason Segel, Linda Cardellini, Busy Philipps and John Francis Daley – would similarly not be on board.

In the TV and film industry, "typecasting" refers to when an actor is consistently given the same kinds of roles. Sometimes, all it takes is a single memorable role for an actor to be cast as a similar character on a regular basis. It can often be a source of frustration for actors who want to branch out and demonstrate their versatility by playing a wide range of characters but are stuck with a label that prevents them from doing so. However, some actors seem to have no problems being constantly cast as the "mad scientist," the "loveable dufus," the "strong silent hero," or another type. After all, a regular paycheck is a regular paycheck.
Some actors have been lucky enough to make a successful career out of sticking to a certain genre only to branch out into roles completely unlike their previous work — often to critical acclaim. Here, we...

Hot on the heels of a shocking Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony, the Casting Society of America announced the television and theatre nominations for the 35th Artios Awards, honoring the contributions of casting directors to the arts.
While Netflix’s “When They See Us,” which won casting for a limited series, and HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” which won casting for a drama series at the Creative Arts Emmy Awards earlier this month, have the potential to repeat their accomplishments thanks to the newly announced nominations. The competition for comedy series casting is wide open, with Emmy-winning “Fleabag” not nominated by Csa.
As for networks, Netflix far and away outstripped its competitors, scoring an impressive 19 television Artios Award nominations, compared to just eight for HBO, four for Hulu, three for FX, and two for Amazon Prime Video.

South Carolina authorities have released suicide notes written by a mother who killed the woman she believed was her estranged husband’s girlfriend before turning the gun on her own two children and then herself, according to multiple reports.
Greenville Online reports that Jessica Edens, 36, wrote to her estranged husband, Ben Edens: “To Ben, you have caused me more pain than I’ve ever been in in my life. You have caused my children pain. I hate you. I hope you rot one day for what you have done to me and my kids. You can no longer hurt us.

There have been reports of more clowns in more cities spotted lurking in the woods. In the past month, police in the Carolinas have received multiple reports from people claiming clowns with white-painted faces were acting strangely in the area - at least once attempting to lure kids into the woods with money. The reports have fueled speculation that the sightings could be a hoax, or possibly even morbid fans trying to promote the 2017 movie release of Stephen King's It, about an evil clown known as Pennywise that terrorized a group of young boys. One local TV station wondered if Rob Zombie's upcoming film,...

While the Oscars have yet to make room for casting directors — a pivotal part of the Best Picture equation — the oversight isn't stopping the Casting Society of America from readying its third decade of picking up the Academy's slack. Csa announced Monday morning that the 30th Annual Artios Awards will honor Academy Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning director Rob Marshall and Emmy Award-winning casting director Ellen Lewis for their individual work in the world of casting. The news arrives with nominations in categories of television, theater, new media and short film, and on the heels of the ceremony's move from November to Jan. 22, the thick of the awards season. Seth Rogen has had his fingerprints all over comedy ever since emerging on the scene as a teenager.
Taken under Judd Apatow's wing early in his career following "Freaks and Geeks," Rogen has had memorable supporting turns in "Undeclared" and "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" -- in addition to success as a writer -- before breaking out in 2007's smash hit "Knocked Up." Since then, the only way you could've missed him is if you've been living under a rock.
From his early collaborations with Sacha Baron Cohen to his surprising connection to "The Simpsons," here are 23 things you probably don't know about Seth Rogen.
1. Rogen was born in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada in 1982 to Sandy Belogus, a social worker, and Mark Rogen, who works for non-profit organizations.
2. His parents met in Israel, and he has described them as "radical Jewish socialists" at least "in American terms."

Freaks and Geeks Episode 1 ‘Pilot’
Directed by Jake Kasdan
Written by Paul Feig
Aired 9/25/1999
If there’s such thing as a perfect pilot, Freaks and Geeks‘s first hour is it. Most pilots are mish-mashed groups of scenes with some overly constructed jokes, an audience-grabbing plot hook, and numerous scenes where characters explain who other characters are. ‘Pilot’ is the exact opposite of that, a beautiful, detailed photograph into a high school in suburban Detroit on the first day back from summer vacation. From that first scene, where an overwrought confession of love between a football player and cheerleader (“I just love you so much… it scares me”) is shoved off-frame to introduce us to the ‘freaks’, Freaks and Geeks established itself as a different kind of high school show, one that wasn’t afraid to be honest about shitty high school life when you’re not “one of the cool kids.

The This Is 40 director and comedy maven defends his mid-life movie and discusses working with everyone from Lena Dunham to Garry Shandling
At one point during the This Is 40 blooper reel, Judd Apatow's wife Leslie Mann, the film's co-lead, is discussing someone's vagina. "Does yours look like that?" somebody asks. "Not any more," she says, forlornly. "It looks like that... just longer."
The exchange didn't make the final cut. "That's actually the only time during the entire shoot where she said, 'I don't wanna say that,'" laughs Apatow, in London to promote the film. "People ask how I get her to do certain things on camera, and most of them are things she pushed to go further, like how it feels to be in a bar and be hit on when you're 40: how happy it makes you, how much you need it, and how bad...

Casting director attachments are starting to trickle out for the networks' early pilot orders. Backstage has learned that CBS comedy pilot "Mom" will be cast by Nikki Valko and Ken Miller. "Mom" has already cast Anna Faris in its lead role as a single mother, newly sober, who struggles to stay on the straight and narrow. The pilot hails from Warner Bros. Television and Chuck Lorre Productions. Valko/Miller currents casts all three of Chuck Lorre's CBS series — "Mike & Molly," "Two and a Half Men," and "The Big Bang Theory." The series is set in California's Napa Valley, but at this time a shoot location — as well as a production start date — is still to be determined. Lesli Gelles-Raymond and Greg Orson of Go Casting, who cast the CW's hit drama "The Vampire Diaries," will also cast the possible spinoff "The Originals." The backdoor pilot, which is set to...

Despite strong reviews (EW’s own Lisa Schwarzbaum gave it a solid B+ rating) and stellar performances — why so little Oscar talk for Joseph Gordon-Levitt in this? — the touching and funny 50/50 didn’t fare nearly as well as it could have at the box office over the weekend. (It came in fourth place with a so-so $8.9 million.) For some, it’s because the idea of sitting through a cancer movie, no matter how many moments of levity it may have, seems unbearable. For others, it’s the idea of sitting through a Seth Rogen movie.

While the series is now universally hailed and nearly everyone involved with it has gone on to showbiz super-stardom, "Freaks and Geeks" was largely ignored during its single 18-episode season on NBC. Even fans of the show would never have guessed which star would become the biggest box office draw eight years later.
That would be 16-year-old Seth Rogen, who played wisecracking freak Ken Miller and saw the least screen time of any regular cast member.
Rogen's first movie appearance didn't really help his cause either. He went from playing a tough, deadpan sidekick burnout to a tough, deadpan sidekick bully in "Donnie Darko."
The role of Ricky Danforth didn't showcase the young comedian's range at all. His most-memorable line is, "I like your boobs," and is much more creepy than funny.
Luckily, Judd Apatow loved Rogen (who's now starring in the buzzworthy dramedy "50/50"), otherwise the tough guy roles may have stuck to him.

The cast of Freaks & Geeks, along with its follow-up, Undeclared, are reuniting for PaleyFest. Creator Judd Apatow, along with Seth Rogen, Jason Segel, Joe Flaherty and others are coming together for the 28th annual festival to take questions from the audience about the shows (alas, no James Franco).
The Freaks & Geeks panel is one of 13 at the event, which includes panels for The Walking Dead, Supernatural, True Blood and Parks and Recreation (full list here), and gets underway on March 4 in Beverly Hills. Here’s the full list of F&G participants:

Variety is reporting that a 10-year reunion for the cast of Freaks and Geeks will be staged for an event at PaleyFest 2011. Apparently Judd Apatow revealed the reunion through his Twitter over the weekend and the Paley Center has since confirmed the fact that a Q&A with the cast and producers is possible.
The official announcement regarding the TV festival won’t hit until next week, but it seems like a safe bet.
The American comedy-drama television series was created by Paul Feig and executive produced by Judd Apatow and aired on NBC during the 1999–2000 television season. Eighteen episodes were completed but the series was canceled after only twelve had aired.
A fan-led campaign persuaded NBC to broadcast three more episodes in July 2000; the three remaining unaired episodes were not seen until September of that year, when the cable network Fox Family Channel aired them in syndication. Despite a...

"Undeclared" is now airing on IFC, and we thought we'd take this opportunity to revisit the show that further cemented broadcast television's inability to recognize the genius of Judd Apatow. Every week, Matt Singer and Alison Willmore will be offering their thoughts on that night's episode.
Episode 1
"Prototype"
Written by Judd Apatow
Directed by Jake Kasdan
Episode 2
"Oh, So You Have a Boyfriend?"
Written by Kristofor Brown
Directed by Paul Feig
"When I'm lecturing, I expect you to listen. This is not high school." -- Professor Duggan
No, it's certainly not. And Judd Apatow's short-lived college series "Undeclared" wasn't his short-lived high-school series "Freaks and Geeks," either. It was made for a different network (Fox instead of NBC), a contemporary story instead of a period piece, and just a half-hour each week instead of "Freaks"'s full hour. Maybe most importantly, with that change of format came a change...

Crime dramas, conspiracy thrillers, and down-home narratives about youthful angst will be among the new shows entering our homes this fall TV season. All will be seeking actors for a range of roles: guest spots, recurring, perhaps even a principal part. We spoke to CDs of several shows to find out what they might need. "Body of Proof," Drama, ABCAs the title suggests, "Body of Proof" is a crime drama. But it's somewhat different from the usual fare, says casting director Rosalie Joseph. In addition to solving murders, the characters are advocates for the victims, giving peace and closure to their survivors. Set in Philadelphia (but shot in Providence, R.I.), the story centers on Dr. Megan Hunt (Dana Delaney), a top-notch neurosurgeon who is forced to give up her medical practice in the wake of a devastating car crash and resume her career as a medical examiner. But within...

Freaks & Geeks was canceled in 2000 after just 18 episodes, but for many of its cast and crew, there may not have been a better career move. Executive producer Judd Apatow, in particular, has gone on to much bigger (if not always better) things, making stars of Seth Rogen (Ken Miller), Jason Segel (Nick Andopolis) and James Franco (Daniel Desario) in the process. Linda Cardellini (Lindsay Weir) just wrapped up a six-year run on ER (we'll forgive her for Scooby-Doo), and Samm Levine (Neal Schweiber) will round out a string of movie roles this fall with Inglorious Basterds.
But this weekend, as Rogen and Apatow go at it again in Funny People, our thoughts turn to the rest of the show's cast. Most haven't quite ascended to that same level of young Hollywood elite, but some have been quietly making nice little careers for themselves under the radar. Others, well—"nice" might...

Seth Rogen was a stand-up comedian by age 12, a screenwriter by age 13. A few years later, he auditioned for a role on a TV series called "Freaks and Geeks." That audition, available on the show's DVD box set and on YouTube, is 82 seconds of excruciating awkwardness: Rogen, visibly nervous, doesn't know where to look or put his jittery hands. Based on the footage, it's remarkable that Rogen got the part, and more remarkable still that less than a decade later, that uncomfortable teenager would become arguably the biggest comedy star in Hollywood. By now, Rogen has made not looking the part into an entire comedic persona.
On "Freaks and Geeks," Rogen played Ken Miller who, for most of the show's 18 episode run, was the least explored central character. He was primarily used as comic relief, and he quickly proved a dependable presence as the quick-witted deliverer of snarky putdowns. His...

So maybe I was a little late to the party, but over the weekend I finally caught a screening of Observe and Report and as I wandered from the theater in a misanthropic haze, I began to wonder: Just how funny is Seth Rogen? Being hailed "the new hero of comedy" is a lot of pressure for anyone -- and don't get me wrong, I'm not saying I don't like the guy; I know he's a great writer and a whiz at improv, but after getting a load of the darker side of Rogen's range as Ronnie Barnhardt I was kind of happy to see that maybe he wasn't the soft and fuzzy stoner (not to mention one-note wonder) that Hollywood would like us to believe.
