In 2011, Dawn Porter arrived at Hot Docs Pitch Forum in the hopes of securing funding for her first documentary feature, “Gideon’s Army.” Thirteen years later, Porter is back in Toronto with her 10th feature doc “Luther: Never Too Much,” which opened the 31st edition of Hot Docs.
The 101-minute film about the life and career of the late R&b singer Luther Vandross made its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and has since become an audience favorite on the festival circuit. In addition to serving as Hot Docs’ opening night film, the movie will also launch the Hot Doc’s Pop/ Life sidebar of films about music and musicians.
In the film, Porter chronicles Vandross’ rise from background singer to singing sensation via archival interviews with Vandross and new ones with his collaborators, including legendary recording artists Mariah Carey and Dionne Warwick. Rarely seen archives,...

In her latest documentary, Luther: Never Too Much, Dawn Porter crafts a striking profile of a singular musician. That Luther Vandross, who died in 2005, hasn’t gotten the documentary treatment until now is surprising considering his imprint on the music industry. Vandross — a true multi-hyphenate — sang, arranged and produced records for himself and other iconic artists. He worked with David Bowie, Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick, for example. He wasn’t just popular with fans for his velvety voice and romantic numbers; he was beloved by industry stalwarts, some of whom appear in Porter’s documentary. Even for those familiar with the “Never Too Much” crooner, Porter’s project is essential viewing.
Premiering at Sundance, Luther: Never Too Much is a trove of archival material. Porter uses rehearsal footage, concert videos, old interviews with Vandross and newer ones with his friends and family to tell the musician’s story. The...

Although it isn’t structured any differently from dozens of other cradle-to-grave documentaries about artistic luminaries, “Luther: Never Too Much” sheds light on much more than just the life and career of R&b singer Luther Vandross. Drawn largely from interview and performance footage of Vandross over his almost 40 years in entertainment, and bolstered and contextualized by retrospective talks will collaborators and confidantes, director Dawn Porter’s film exposes some uneasy truths about the music industry and the media we may now know, but whose seeming ubiquitousness at the time he was alive may be difficult to fully comprehend.
White audience members in particular may stand to learn the most about him — a fact Porter pointedly attributes to the genre siloes of radio’s heyday and cultural prejudices against black singers who weren’t thin or light-skinned enough to receive the opportunity to cross over from R&b to pop.

When award-winning filmmaker Dawn Porter — who directed the upcoming Luther Vandross documentary Luther: Never Too Much — thinks of her favorite song by the legendary singer, she selects “So Amazing,” the timeless track he wrote and produced for Dionne Warwick and later recorded himself.
But then she pauses. “I think it’s hard for me because I’m very attached to some scenes right now,” she says. Then she speaks about “Any Love,” Vandross’ autobiographical song about wanting to find the one and the sadness behind being alone. The track topped the R&b charts in the late ’80s.
“I really wanted him to be able to tell you his story as much as possible, so how do you do that with someone who’s not with us? A lot of that was thinking about the lyrics. [On] ‘Any Love,’ he was just endlessly frustrated with the absence of a romantic partner in his life,...

Naomi Ackie gives audiences a glimpse into the life of Whitney Houston in director Kasi Lemmons’ new biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” and the new film is packed with a number of Houston’s hits.
Working with movement coach Polly Bennett and vocal coaches Tangela Large, Bridgette Jackson and Denise Woods, Ackie also underwent physical transformation with the help of numerous wigs and false teeth to cover the natural gap in her two front teeth.
Ackie doesn’t sing most songs in the film — she lip syncs to Houston’s perfect tracks instead — but she mimics Houston’s style of singing with great detail. She steps in for performances by Houston that were not recorded, such as “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” and “Jesus Loves Me” from her choir-singing days. Ackie also portrays a nervous Whitney who is thrust onstage by her mother, who knows Clive Davis is in attendance,...

Academy and Grammy Award-winning artist Jon Batiste is leaving ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ after seven seasons, Colbert announced Thursday night on the show.
He’s exiting to “pursue personal and professional interests”. Louis Cato, who has served as interim bandleader this summer, will take over on a permanent basis and Colbert’s band, which previously had been called “Stay Human” under Batiste’s direction, will be renamed ‘The Late Show Band’, reports ‘Variety’.
Cato will take over permanently when the show returns for its eighth season on Tuesday, September 6.
“Louis has done a great job this summer, and he is very humble, so he won’t say this. But I will. He’s a musical genius,” Colbert said.
“He can play basically every instrument over there. Give him an afternoon, he’ll learn how to play Mozart on a shoehorn.”
Cato, has been with “The Late Show” since its relaunch under Colbert.

Stephen Colbert announced on tonight’s The Late Show that Academy Award and Grammy winner Jon Batiste is departing after seven seasons to pursue personal and professional interests.
“We’ve been so lucky to have a front row seat to Jon’s incredible talent for the past seven years. And will we miss him here? ‘Yeaaa!’ But we’re happy for you, Jon, and I can’t wait to have you back on as guest with your next hit record,” Colbert said.
Batiste has been the Late Show bandleader since Colbert took over as host in 2015. His music career has been on a roll in the last two years as he won an Oscar in 2020 for his Soul score and won five Grammys this year, including Album of the Year.

Just like he did at the 2019 BET Awards and the 2020 Primetime Emmy Awards, Tyler Perry delivered another rousing speech, this time at the 2021 Oscars on Sunday. “I would hope that we would refuse hate,” Perry said during his powerful address while receiving the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in one of the highlights of the Academy Awards telecast on ABC.
Another emotional acceptance speech that moved viewers came from Thomas Vinterberg, the International Oscar winner for Another Round. He payed tribute to his teenage daughter Ida, who died in a car accident four days into the film’s shoot, and dedicated the award to her.
Minari co-star Yuh-Jung Youn, who had been endearing with her off-the-cuff remarks throughout awards season, notably thanking Britain’s “snobbish people” during her BAFTA acceptance speech, again did not disappoint. As soon as the singer Ledisi earned a major-label deal more than a decade ago, she started to get calls from pop music legends. They had pointed opinions about her career path and didn’t mince words.

The title of the just-completed documentary “Dave Grusin: Not Enough Time” reflects the subject’s lament that there aren’t enough hours in the day or days in the year for all the music that needs to be made. That desire to stretch the clock might seem hyperbolic coming from other musicians, but not for someone whose hats have included film and TV scorer, concert performer, producer and jazz label mogul, often all at once.
At a post-screening Q&A in Santa Monica this week, the great jazz bassist Marcus Miller spoke about being a youthful protege and watching Grusin casually change hats mid-day… and assuming that was normal.

The word “cabaret” brings with it tons of evocations, many of which are false. All that cabaret means, really, is a combination of song and storytelling; an artist able to perform as their authentic self. And as an audience member, there is usually booze involved. Written and directed by Matt Farnsworth, The Orphan Killer is an entertaining horror film that delivers plenty of tension, action and blood, blood, blood! It's been banned in Germany, and thanks to the hustle of Farnsworth, one of the hardest working guys in the business, you'll get a chance to pick up your own Marcus Miller mask, made by Trick or Treat Studios, at your favorite retail Halloween store this year.

The Orphan Killer is the brainchild of writer/director Matt Farnsworth. The film is unique in that it's generated an international buzz of interest without ever having had an official release.
Currently marketing the film himself online, Farnsworth has huge plans for The Orphan Killer (review here) and its superstar slasher, Marcus Miller.
"The Orphan Killer is a psychotic horror movie," Farnsworth said. "It's hard to pinpoint exactly what you're going to create when you begin making a film. You've got an idea going in but it never turns out like the exact initial concept. The inspiration for Tok was partly my first film, Iowa…I really liked the practical F/X on Iowa. There was a throat slash, finger cut off, and other practical F/X used. I thought it was amazing when I saw it on film and the blood reminded me of the slashers I saw as a kid in the 80's.

Geneva — Grammy-winning jazz bassist Marcus Miller and several members of his band were injured when their bus overturned Sunday on a busy highway in Switzerland, killing the driver, police said.
The German-registered private bus tipped over as it drove into a bend on the A2 highway in central Switzerland and came to a rest on its side, police in the canton (state) of Uri said. The bus was carrying 13 people – two drivers and 11 members of the Marcus Miller Band, including Miller.
Over his career, the bassist has worked with jazz greats such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and Wayne Shorter, according to his website. He won two Grammys, his first coming in 1991 for Best Rhythm & Blues Song ("Power of Love") along with Luther Vandross and Teddy Vann, and the second came in 2001 for Best Contemporary Jazz Album ("M2").

Celebrated author, filmmaker, producer, historian, critic, and more, Mr Nelson George, is making a worthwhile movie - one whose story I think you'll find mighty appealing, as I did, and would be encouraged to help see realized. Mr George has launched a Kickstarter campaign for a a documentary project titled Finding The Funk; and with a title like that, you can probably guess what the film's focus is - as Nelson himself states, a journey through the origins and influence of funk music, from James Brown to D'Angelo. Corey Wilkes: Kind of Miles: Live at the Velvet Lounge (Katalyst)
Greg Spero Quartet: Radio over Miles (Katalyst)
These are not quite new releases (copyright 2011 and 2010 respectively), but they're new to me, and new enough that, in combination with their sterling quality and unjustly low profiles (outside Chicago, that is), a review seems eminently deserved. They are linked by more than the label releasing them (Chicago-based Katalyst Entertainment specializes in Chicago-linked jazz performers, both new releases and reissues). There's the Miles Davis repertoire reflected in the album titles, and three-quarters of Spero's band -- him, trumpeter Wilkes, and bassist Junius Paul -- is half of the sextet on Wilkes's album, with Spero's electric keyboards integral to the sound of both groups.
Newer release first. The idea of a trumpeter doing a Miles-themed album may seem too obvious to be more than a pale imitation, but Wilkes and the band have...

Hey there, Orphan Killers! Welcome once again to another installment of The Dungeon of Deadly Delights! In the past four weeks alone, we have had over 100,000 listeners! So thank you from the bottom of my dark heart!
This week was another killer episode as we spoke to Matt Farnsworth and Diane Foster of the horror phenomenon known as The Orphan Killer. If you have not seen this movie... what are you waiting for? It is one of the best horror films released in a very long time. Matt is a visionary and Diane is one of the greatest horror actresses you will ever witness. Believe me.
We spoke about Marcus Miller, origins, Catholicism, as well as sequels! And wait to hear what is in store for "Apocalypse" Amy and myself when the story continues! You can pick up region-free DVD's and Blu-rays of the film, t-shirts, and official replica Marcus Miller...

Chuck Brown, who fused funk, soul and Latin sounds into an entirely new party music called go-go in Washington, D.C., in the 1970s, has died at 75 after suffering pneumonia. Brown, a guitarist, singer and songwriter affectionately dubbed the "godfather of go-go," died Wednesday from complications of sepsis at Johns Hopkins University Hospital in Baltimore, the Washington Post reports. He had been hospitalized since April 18. Go-go music was a point of pride for black Washingtonians, and Brown - an ex-con who became one of the city's most beloved figures - remained its most charismatic performer. He performed less often but...

-- "The Wayman Tisdale Story" (Rendezvous Music/Mack Avenue)
"The Wayman Tisdale Story" is the larger-than-life tale of a three-time college All-American, Olympic gold medalist and 12-year NBA veteran who after he gave up hoops turned to his "first love" – music – and became a contemporary jazz star with several chart-topping CDs. But it's more than that.
It's also the inspirational story of a "gentle giant" – the son and brother of noted preachers_ who always kept his trademark smile and faith in a courageous battle against the bone cancer that eventually claimed his life at age 44 in May 2009.
The CD/DVD package includes a recent documentary, written and directed by Brian Schodorf, that includes some of Tisdale's last interviews in the weeks before his death, as well as footage from his final concert in Memphis, Tenn., when despite having lost half of his right leg, he still thrilled the crowd with...

One film festival I'm bound and determined to make it to one of these years is the South African HorrorFest, but for now I'll just have to live vicariously through those of you who live close enough to attend. And after taking a look at this year's lineup, I'm pretty sure that if you are in the area, you won't want to miss it!
Growing into the country's ultimate Halloween event covering indie, new and classic movies, short films, music, literature and a range of Halloween festivities, 2011 marks the annual South African HorrorFest's lucky 7th year! It runs 26 October through 4 November.
Almost each of the exciting feature films and short films make their South African theatrical premieres. The Makabra Ensemble will also debut their Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde movie soundtrack performance, live to the screening of this 1920 silent classic.

Marcus Miller is a bad man. The newest cold-blooded (and I mean cold-blooded, this is guy is batshit crazy!) killer to hit the silver screen is the star of Matt Farnsworth's violent new film The Orphan Killer. And he doesn't fuck around.
As you'll see by the trailer below, The Orphan Killer is a very Halloween-esque film. But if you're going to model yourself after something, why not one of the most successful independent films of all time?
So what do we know about this new slasher, Marcus Miller? Just judging by the trailer, he's really, really brutal. I would make the argument that he swings an axe with as much aggression and bad intentions as anyone I've ever seen (but I think that nun had it coming).
The Orphan Killer was written and directed by Matt Farnsworth (he also plays Mike in the film) and stars David Backus as Miller.
