Jess Day has never been my favorite New Girl character (that has and always will be Nick Miller), but she’s the show’s protagonist. Even though New Girl has grown into an ensemble series over the years, to the point where Jess could be legitimately absent from a few episodes in Season 5, it’s still always been Jess’s show; without the strong writing for her character and Zooey Deschanel’s equally stellar performance, New Girl never would have worked back when it premiered in 2011, and it wouldn’t work now either. Jess has, of course, been through some major ups and downs throughout the show’s five-plus

Three might be company but five (plus a marriage) is finally enough to make our friends move out of the loft.
In New Girl Season 6 Episode 1 we finally get to see that change. The roommates are growing up and moving on. But the friendships, of course, are never going away.
I'm so happy to see Cece and Schmidt leaving the apartment. Not just moving down the hall but actually buying a home. I think that really brings some sense to a show that sometimes doesn't make any.
In this first episode, I think you really see the growth of all the characters. Each one has embarked on a new journey or relationship.
Winston and Aly are going strong, and I like them as a couple. I hope they don't have her away at FBI training for long.
Our poor Jess is still pining over Nick Miller. Funny to see her...

After a long summer away, the roommates are back, and they're bringing their feelings, their cats, and their relationship problems with them. Tonight's premiere chronicles Schmidt (Max Greenfield) and Cece's (Hannah Simone) house hunt, Winston's (Lamorne Morris) long-distance relationship with Aly (Nasim Pedrad), and of course, Jess' (Zooey Deschanel, who directed the episode!) lingering feelings for Nick Miller (Jake Johnson). The big problem with that last one is the fact that in the season five finale, Nick headed off to New Orleans to be with Reagan (Megan Fox), leaving Jess to pick up a few new ridiculous and amazing hobbies. In the exclusive clip above, Jess finds that...

Jake Peralta, meet Jess Day. Nick Miller, babble on to your heart's content in front of Captain Holt. Schmidt, good luck flirting with Rosa Diaz. A New Girl/Brooklyn Nine-Nine crossover is in the works. Fox announced today that characters from the two Tuesday comedies would meet in back-to-back episodes airing October 11 at 8 & 8:30 p.m. There aren't any details yet beyond the fact that the crossover will take place in New York, which raises the possibility that Coach might appear. Here are the showrunners of each: Brooklyn Nine-Nine co-creator Dan Goor: “Brooklyn Nine-nine crossing over with New Girl is very exciting, but (and this is supposed to be a secret) it’s just the first step. Stay tuned for our two casts to do a soulful R&B number on Empire, co-anchor the Fox 10 O’Clock News and connect for a touchdown on Fox NFL Sunday. But in all seriousness,...

A review of tonight's New Girl season finale coming up just as soon as John-John redecorates the White House... New Girl as a rule benefits from keeping things simple. The more characters, and the more plot, a given episode has to deal with, the more the seams start to show on a series that's most comfortable sitting and back and letting its five regulars riff. Just look at the contrast between the bachelor and bachelorette party episodes a couple of weeks back: the one with so many guys struggled to deal with them all, while the one that was just Jess, Cece, and Aly had room to go off on many hilarious tangents. So the two-part season finale — which brought back Reagan, Coach (and Coach's girlfriend May), Tran, Schmidt's parents, and Cece's mom, along with continuing the Jess/Sam and Winston/Aly relationship stories, all while anything and everything went...

There’s a lot to love about tonight’s episodes of New Girl. “Dress” and “Return to Sender” are two of the funniest installments that the Fox sitcom has delivered during Season 5, featuring some of the wackiest and weirdest Winston quirks we’ve seen yet (How amazing was everything having to do with the bird shirts in “Return to Sender”?) and a lot of quality Nick Miller moments (all of his burner phones, his thinking it was “out of the boo,” all the alcohol he keeps hidden in the loft). There’s also a lot of heart in both of tonight’s New Girl episodes, including Jess

The new girl met the newer girl on tonight's 100th episode of New Girl, and we hope a beautiful new friendship was born. Sure, Reagan's (Megan Fox) headed off to continue her jet-setting life of pharmaceutical sales, but she and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) did get to spend most of tonight's episode bonding as they searched for the juror Jess fell in love with while sequestered. Of course, the main thing they have in common aside from their brown hair and having lived in the same room is an attraction to one Nick Miller. We thought that might be awkward, but it really wasn't (save for Nick's incredibly awkward and amazing stream of consciousness rant at finding them in the same room...

It's a big night for New Girl! Not only does tonight's episode mark the return of Jess after being sequestered on a jury (while Zooey Deschanel was on maternity leave Irl), but it's also the series' 100th episode! In honor of that milestone, we're compiling our 100 favorite moments, episodes, quotes, guest stars and more. We even hit up the show's 100th episode party to get input from cast members Deschanel, Lamorne Morris, Hannah Simone, and Max Greenfield, as well as creator Liz Meriwether and executive producers Brett Baer and Dave Finkel. New casting details are shambling out of the tomb for Universal’s The Mummy, as it has been revealed that Jake Johnson has joined the cast and Annabelle Wallis is in talks to play a lead role.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Jake Johnson will appear in the new Mummy movie from Universal. Johnson is taking on a military role that was “written specifically for him.” Well-known for playing Nick Miller on New Girl, Johnson recently stole scenes with his self-referential humor in Jurassic World.
Johnson joins Tom Cruise (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) and Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service) in the project, with the former rumored to portray an ex-soldier and the latter expected to play The Mummy.
Additionally, Variety reports that Wallis is in talks to star in a lead role as an archaeologist in the upcoming Mummy movie from Universal.

Jake Johnson has been an absolute scene stealer as Nick Miller throughout New Girl‘s four-plus seasons, but for tonight’s episode of the Fox sitcom (the show’s 99th in total—next week it hits the big 100 mark), Johnson was not only in front of the camera but behind it, directing his first-ever episode of the series. “What About Fred?” is certainly a funnier episode of New Girl than last week’s season opener, and how could it not be when you have Nick Miller attempting to act like a boss, Taran Killiam being ordered to almost break dance by Nasim Perdad, and Harry Winkler and Julie Hagerty as the most likable parents on the planet? Still though, it’s a slight step down after last week’s moving premiere, as New Girl tries to make up for the weightlessness of most of its stories with some fantastic humor. “What About Fred?” had so much potential to be more than what it was. Even "The Rock" gets choked up sometimes. Dwayne Johnson showed his softer side on Sunday in an Instagram post the detailed a chance encounter he had with a fan who is currently fighting cancer. "Cool story to share on Easter.. After my workout I'm drivin' in my pick up and notice these kids in the rearview mirror screamin' & runnin' after my truck. Thought to myself, "Should I stop or keep drivin'? I stopped," he began as he retold the fateful encounter. "I hop out of my truck and this kid runs up to me, hugs the hell outta me and says it's been his life's dream to meet me and tell me how much I've inspired him to fight cancer (Hodgkin's lymphoma) and hard core chemo and stem cell transplant treatments." The actor continued, "He was a little teary eyed and said for months and months all he's wanted to...

He’s always been a graceful celebrity and Dwayne Johnson spent some time with a very lucky fan on Easter Sunday (April 5).

Joe Swanberg is 33. I don't know whether to be amazed by how high or low that number is. On one hand, that's ridiculously young for a filmmaker who broke out back in 2006 and 2007 with "Lol" and "Hannah Takes The Stairs" and has been absurdly prolific since then. On the other hand, though, the filmmaker who made his name -- and, depending on your generosity, made a genre -- chronicling the dramatically limited foibles of recent college graduates has reached the "thirtysomething" phase of his career. The erratic and misdirected youths at the center of Swanberg's earlier films have become the pesky nubiles who show up to make Swanberg's new leads feel either old or optimistically mature. It's a transition that has been in the works for a little while. Last year's Swanberg Sundance entry "Happy Christmas" featured the director and Melanie Lynskey as a grown-up, responsible couple whose house nearly...

For ensemble comedies to truly work, you need a group of incredibly talented people, not just one major star. That’s true for shows like Parks and Recreation, Community, New Girl, and, most recently, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, even though each of these four series has one standout performer that has risen above the rest. Parks has Nick Offerman as Ron Swanson, Community had Donald Glover (and still has Danny Pudi), New Girl‘s got Jake Johnson, who, in my eyes, has made Nick Miller one of the best characters currently on TV, but what about Brooklyn Nine-Nine? Who is that show’s star, or, if you will, its Mvp? As you can probably guess by the title of this article, I would say the breakout star of Brooklyn Nine-Nine has been Melissa Fumero, who plays straight-laced, rule-following Amy Santiago on the Fox comedy. While this may sound like blasphemy to many...

Whatever they may be, eyebrows are important. And television today is replete with this fanciest of face art. So we decided they must be celebrated.
Who will win the coveted Sandy Cohen Award for most valuable eyebrows currently on TV?

First and foremost, we are so happy to have Eliza Coupe back and she can never leave us again. Next, we love an actor who can play a flawless mix of Type A Perfect and Human Mess Disaster. And no one does it better than Coupe, and her brows are the secret weapon for bringing the whole package together. There’s crazy in those brows.

Zooey Deschanel filmed scenes for the holiday episode of her hit Fox comedy series New Girl in Downtown Los Angeles on Thursday.
Zooey Deschanel Films 'New Girl'
Deschanel was accompanied on location for New Girl in California by Jake Johnson (Nick Miller), Max Greenfield (Schmidt), Hannah Simone (Cece), Lamore Morris (Winston Bishop), and Damon Wayans Jr. (Coach). The gang appeared to heading off together on some sort of trip in the scene they were filming, as they were all carting along luggage.
Dressed in a plaid sweater, jeans and knee-high boots as Jess, Deschanel had a canvas tote bag stuffed with presents slung under her arm. During another scene, the actress was spotted wheeling a light blue suitcase standing outside a sliding glass door with Greenfield, Johnson and Simone.

On last night's New Girl fans were in for a rude awakening. Zooey Deschanel's sweetly crooned intro, the one with the brightly painted set pieces, had disappeared in place of a series of cast photos. Even more distressing, Deschanel's "who's that girl?" vocals were also no longer around, just the slightly amended tune remaining. I, for one, will miss it all. Fox confirmed to EW that last night was the first episode with the new credits, which are the ones that will be used in future episodes. The ep may have been called “Fired Up,” but it fizzled more than sizzled, no? Is Schmidt’s sudden descent into poverty a long held-over karmic make-good for his cheating? Why does Nick’s former life in law keep resurfacing? Why hasn’t Winston gone off to police academy yet? What is the point of Cece’s new relationship (if you can call it that)? And would it be too soon if we never saw another episode of Jess at school? Ponder those questions as you read…

J.R. Ewing might be gone, but his legacy lives on with a new bourbon named after the "Dallas" patriarch. The Southfork Bottling Company has teamed up with Warner Bros. TV for a new liquor set to hit select shelves at the end of March.
J.R. Ewing Bourbon is a 4-year-old, 80-proof light amber-colored bourbon described as having a nose that's "classic and slightly fruity, with notes of vanilla, oak sweetness and a touch of orange. The taste profile is surprisingly mild, yet crisp, and exhibits a lightly spicy/honey taste that lingers on the palate," according to people who know a lot more words to describe bourbon than "mmmm, more please!"

We’ve all been there, when faced with the insurmountable and almighty task of churning out words for our editorial-overlords under a vast approaching deadline, we’d much prefer to stay planted on the settee all day watching TV. In fact, there are times when we’d rather just ‘panic moonwalk’ away from our journalistic responsibilities altogether.
That’s because there’s a little bit (or in some cases, a lot) of Nick Miller in all of us. One of TV’s most identifiable characters, Nick – basking wondrously in surly realism – is the true breakout character of New Girl. So much more likeable than the flashy, Jason Bateman-in-waiting that is Schmidt and a mite more nuanced than the undernourished Winston, Nick’s world-weary cynicism makes him the perfect foil for the wide-eyed innocence of Zooey Deschanel’s downright ‘adorkable’ Jessica Day.

Seriously, there are so many of them.
Here they are:
Chris Pratt
Who He Voices: Emmet Brickowski
Why We Love Him: Pratt's endeared himself to audiences for the last six years as the lovable goofball Andy Dwyer on "Parks and Recreation."
Elizabeth Banks
Who She Voices: Wyldstyle

“Burn ‘em swiftly and send their ashes to Poseidon,” Nick Miller says about exes, which is very funny, but a super-wacky bananatown attitude to have about people you’ve dated. In most cases, when you date someone, it’s because you (and this may be assuming a lot) liked that person at some point. And if you ever liked a person, not even like-liked, just appreciated for their sense of humor or capacity for empathy or knowledge of seventies prog rock, it is a little cuckoo to want to cremate them and throw their remains to the sea while they’re still alive.Meeting the ex of someone you’re currently dating is delicate territory. You want to be polite, to respect the history between the two, which you can’t ignore. But there’s a massive discomfort to watching people slip into old patterns, patterns you don’t recognize and maybe even definitely resent.

Can’t say this episode did a lot to move sitcom gender politics forward, folks. As we have long known, women only have two modes: adorably naïve or vengeful psychopath. Men, meanwhile, are just out to bone. Feel free to disagree with me (and all respect to Adam Brody and Mary Elizabeth Ellis), but this ep felt like a bit of a letdown after Sunday’s genuinely hilarious, plot-advancing post-Super Bowl episode. Sure, it exposed an emotional side to Nick we rarely see (albeit one even Jess didn’t fully buy), but it also lost some ground — for me at...

What do you do when you significant other says ‘I Love You’ and you shamelessly respond by busting out your finest finger guns? Enlist Prince’s help, of course! Here are the five ‘New Girl’ moments that made us (and the doves) cry with laughter.
Prince dropped by for the post-Super Bowl episode of New Girl on Feb. 2, in a magical installment that found Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) desperately needing some sage love advice from the artist formerly known as The Artist Formerly Known As.
Prince Visits ‘New Girl’: The 5 Best Moments From ‘Party Time’
1. Finger Guns. Jess responding to Nick’s impromptu “I Love You” with these bad boys was funny enough, but Prince’s disinterested revelation that he was “not familiar” with finger guns was priceless. (Pretty decent comic timing, no?)

2. Nick’s Scream. Nick shrieked like a howler monkey...

After the pigskin comes the purple velvet.
As we previously reported, Prince is hosting a shindig Sunday night, and the New Girl gang is (mostly) invited! Jake Johnson, who plays Nick, talked with EW about the Artist Once Again Known As Prince, promising he will play a central role in another step forward for live-in lovahs Nick and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) — and that’s before the guest headliner performs a new original song to close out the episode.

Now this is the episode that should have been positioned as the fall finale, don’t you think, Newbies? It had everything — a touching happy ending, misunderstandings and shenanigans, a glimpse of reconciliation between Cece and Schmidt, Ben Falcone (!), genuine Nick Miller chivalry (followed by the most passionate Nick-Jess smooch we’ve seen in months), something for Winston and Coach to do that resulted in actual character development, and Tran! ”Birthday” was New Girl at its most elemental, easily ascending to best-of-season status. I might even put it as one of the top five episodes of the whole series. Agree or disagree?...

In 2013, Digital Spy has embraced all that UK and Us television has to offer - from the very best of comedy and drama, to the merely middling, to the absolute stinkers.
But now it's time to celebrate only the finest cuts - it's our top TV shows of the year, continuing now with 20-16.
20. New Girl
Funny and warm, New Girl has always been a show in flux - starting life as a vehicle for Zooey Deschanel, it gradually transformed into an ensemble show to make better use of its supporting cast, including season one's standout - Max Greenfield's scene-stealing Schmidt.
Heading into its second season, the show continued to change and grow and, while Schmidt still provided plenty of laughs, in 2013 New Girl was all about Jake Johnson's slobbish, simple but utterly endearing Nick Miller and - in particular - his on-off romance with Deschanel's Jess. In many ways,...

In The Dark Knight Rises (one of the weird new Batman movies, according to Nick Miller), it seems that handsome billionaire Bruce Wayne has nothing to live for. He exists only for the time he spends fighting crime in his Batsuit (or Batmansuit, as Jess Day might say). One of the film’s themes is the push and pull of the identity with which you’re born against the identity you create for yourself. At least, I think it is? I have a better recollection of the film’s more prominent theme, which was, of course: Prisoners in a pit will be surprisingly deft chiropractors and will encourage one another’s efforts to escape.Michael Keaton’s Batman dwelled in less darkness than Christian Bale’s version of the character. He fought a less sinister Joker, and he was (at least in my memory) a more unambiguous force of justice.

In a world filled with Manic Pixie Dream Girls it seems only natural that their male counterpart should arise. Behold: The Awkdorable Slacker Dude – a character whose roots can be traced back to the ’80s but is now a popular fixture on sitcoms, with Nick Miller of New Girl leading the slovenly pack. You know the guy we’re talking about: He’s lovable and cute, despite that untucked flannel and extra five pounds he’s carrying. He’s quippy, awkward and complains like a grandfather, spends more time talking up his creative pursuits than actually committing to them and works at – or frequents – a bar or coffee shop. ASDs are infuriating and yet somehow women find them irresistible (most of the time). Here are ten of our faves.

Maybe it was when Cece (Hannah Simone) and Schmidt (Max Greenfield) split up on New Girl, and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) didn’t spend any time comforting her with smiley-face cupcakes or tearful screenings of Bambi.
Or maybe it was when Mindy (Mindy Kaling) broke off her engagement to Pastor Casey (Anders Holm), and no one was there to help her fill that sad-single-girl-shaped hole in her heart with extra helpings of glass noodle salad.
At some point, I started to wonder: Do any women on TV have female friends anymore?

National Grouch Day is on October 15 and celebrates the curmudgeons, pessimists and others who insist on seeing the world in a negative light.
Originally meant to honor "Sesame Street"s Oscar the Grouch, there are plenty of other grouchy TV characters to note. From Ron Swanson of "Parks and Recreation" to Sue Sylvester on "Glee," here are some of television's most-beloved grouches.
Oscar the Grouch - The most famous of TV's grouches is Oscar, the mossy green, trashcan-living Muppet of "Sesame Street." "Sesame Street Magazine" actually created the holiday to honor Oscar.
Ron Swanson (Nick Offerman) - Ron of "Parks and Recreation" is the perfect antidote to the relentless and aggressive optimism of Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler). Even if he hates you (and he probably does), it's hard not to love Ron.
Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) - Most grouches don't make attractive boyfriends. Nick is the exception to this, effectively...

Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Season 1, Episode 4, “M.E. Time”
Directed by Troy Miller
Written by Gil Ozeri
Airs Tuesdays at 8:30pm Est on Fox
The Tuesday night comedies are generally a lot more entertaining this week as two It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia stars make appearances on other shows. Brooklyn Nine-Nine is shaping up to be one of the better fall comedies this year as it’s beginning to tone down the silliness and really find its stride. Jake’s ability to completely wind up Amy is a strong part of his character and one of the most entertaining parts of the show – the opening pre-titles scene this week is great. The show is starting to follow an extremely similar format to another of Fox’s shows, New Girl. With hilarious scenes before the opening credits and great flashbacks and cutaways, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is making up for the weak episodes...

What are your top 10 favorite movies of the year so far? Whatever they are, we'd be willing to bet not even half of 'em sync up with Quentin Tarantino's little listoid.
Tarantino's a notoriously off-kilter dude, sure, but he's also a two-time Oscar-winning screenwriter and a well-respected (albeit strange) director, so you might think he's at least somewhat on the "12 Years a Slave"-"Fruitvale Station"-"The Butler"-"Inside Llewyn Davis"-ish bandwagon, but noooooo.
Not. even. close.
Just wait 'til you get a look at some of these crazytown title choices (brace for the anomaly votes, Academy)!
Meanwhile, we'll try to make a 'lil sense out of why it is that these are his picks (where possible), since he didn't offer up his own reasons when passing this list along to his fans.

New Girl is back, y’all. No disrespect to last week’s premiere, but tonight felt like the level of hilarity, heartstring-pulling, and sharp storytelling that spoiled us last season. To wit, Jess and Nick once more earned their couplehood, from the minute he spit-smoothed her bangs to his final words to her (“I would have noticed you”); the mean girls — and boy — on the sidelines reaffirmed why we loved the loftmates so much; Schmidt was up to his usual douchebag jar-worthy antics… but almost redemptively guilty about his behavior, and Winston got the chance to play with an adorable kitteh.

With the fall television season heading back into high gear, there's no better time to start celebrating some of the best writing on the small screen. This week, Zap2it decided to put together a list of our favorite lines from the past seven days' programming.
Dean Norris was lucky enough to make the list twice, with both Hank Schrader and Big Jim Rennie popping out quality one-liners. Also destined to become a regular on this weekly list is Jake Johnson's "New Girl" character Nick Miller, whose witticisms keep us cracking up week after week.
Here are 10 of the best lines on television the week of Sept. 15:
- "Breaking Bad's" Hank Schrader to Uncle Jack: "My name is Asac Schrader, and you can go f*** yourself."
- "Dance Moms" Abby Lee Miller about two moms getting into a slap-fight at Nationals: "They acted like trash in the...

The long-simmering sexual tension between New Girl's Nicholas Miller and Jessica Day finally became a romance last May, at the end of the show's second season. How their romance proceeds will be revealed when the show returns in just five weeks, on September 17. When Vulture caught up with Zooey Deschanel at Fox's TV Critics Association press tour party last week, she told us how long she's known they'd get together, and why she's thrilled to get past the will-they-won't-they and into the they-will. She also revealed to us that some fans still haven't forgiven her for her character instigating the (500) Days of Summer breakup. What's the theme of season three? It's really hard to tell because we haven't started shooting yet. But … what I'm excited about this season is: Last season, they pulled Nick and Jess together. This season, they can pull them apart, they can twist them around,...

When the news of Dennis Farina’s death by cancer at age 69 came through early this week, I think I felt a particularly sharp pang because it came so soon after the passing of James Gandolfini. I hadn’t thought of it before, but with Gandolfini still fresh in my mind, when I heard about Farina’s death I had a sense of connection between the two actors, and the same sense of having lost “one of our own.”
As actors, they were poles apart. Gandolfini was the trained actor, the skilled artist, somebody who had found his calling young and applied himself to perfecting his instrument. Farina’s was a case of fortunate circumstance, natural ability, and working from the gut.
But what they both shared – and what I’d always responded to in both men – was an Italian-American blue collar-dom, a sense of being one of the guys,...

In a very sad case of life imitating art, actor Dennis Farina died Monday at age 69 just months after his New Girl character was laid to rest on TV.
In the March 26 episode “Chicago,” Nick Miller (Jake Johnson) and his roommates head to Nick’s hometown for the funeral of Walt Miller (Farina). Johnson clearly had a soft spot for his TV dad, sending this statement to EW on Monday:
“I feel very honored to have had the chance to meet, talk the Chicago Bears, and act with Dennis Farina,” Johnson said in the statement. “He is someone I will surely miss.
