Oscar Micheaux is a trailblazing American filmmaker whose name and fandom — including Spike Lee and the late John Singleton — are better known than his groundbreaking films. A festival opening in New York on Friday, May 3, at Film Forum aims to fix that.
Though competition is steep in the New York film space, with 17 films and several curated special events, “Oscar Micheaux and the Birth of Black Independent Cinema” is designed to make history. Seven films on the schedule are new restorations of the original prints. Some screenings will be accompanied by live musical performances, much like when silent films were originally exhibited in the 1910s and 1920s. On May 5, there’s also a tribute for the recently deceased author and filmmaker Pearl Bowser, a pivotal architect of the renaissance Micheaux’s work now enjoys. The lineup also boasts conversations with DJ Spooky (aka Paul Miller), who composed new scores for...

Saudi Arabia Scores First Cannes Official Selection Slot With Drama ‘Norah,’ Set When Art Was Banned
Saudi Arabia has landed its first film in the Cannes Film Festival official selection with “Norah,” a drama by pioneering director Tawfik Alzaidi set in 1990s Saudi, when conservatism was at its height and all forms of art and painting were banned for religion-related reasons.
“Norah,” which premiered locally in December at Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, will be launching internationally from Cannes’ prestigious Un Certain Regard section, marking the first Saudi film to screen in Cannes and becoming a symbol of the kingdom’s rapidly growing moviemaking ambitions since Saudi Arabia lifted its 35-year-old religion-related ban on cinema in 2017.
The film’s titular character, played by Saudi newcomer Maria Bahrawi, is an illiterate orphaned young woman who lives in a remote village where she faces an arranged marriage in which she will be trapped and has a need for self expression. She intersects with an artist named Nader,...

Five years after scoring back-to-back Emmy wins for helming the 89th and 90th Oscars, Glenn Weiss could clinch his fifth Best Variety Special Directing trophy for his work on the latest Academy Awards ceremony. Given the knowledge that Jimmy Kimmel hosted said two 2010s Oscars events as well as the one Weiss is currently nominated for, a majority of Gold Derby’s Emmy predictors expect history to simply repeat itself, and they are wise to think so.
Weiss’s most formidable challengers in this contest are producing Emmy winner Jay-Z and seven-time directing nominee Hamish Hamilton, who are recognized for conducting Rihanna’s halftime performance at the most recent Super Bowl. Also in the mix are the directors of the stand-up specials “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” and “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” and the career retrospective “Carol Burnett: 90 Years of Laughter + Love.”

The 3-day industry event, held online for the first time, brought light to a diverse set of projects in early and advanced development stages. The 9th edition of Fest’s Pitching Forum, the festival’s only industry event, took place online for the first time, spanning three days. This year, the Pitching Forum maintained its core goal of showcasing ongoing projects to a panel of jurors, experts, distributors, producers and investors, giving the projects a chance to compete for development and mentorship awards, following up successful editions. As Paul Miller, member of this year’s Pitching Forum jury, states: “the event has been going from strength to strength” and “the pitching and quality of projects both in creativity and viability continues to increase” in what has become “an important networking and co-production platform”. This year, in the eyes of festival director Filipe Pereira, the Pitching Forum “had excellent projects...
When we had the chance to catch up with Catherine Disher this week, our conversation ran the gamut from thoughts on the world's political situation to Covid-19 to the beloved town of Middleton on Good Witch.
Unlike her character, Martha Tinsdale, everything Catherine discusses is done with grace, and that's what makes playing Martha so much fun for the talented actress.
And like every one of her cast members, Catherine's experience on Good Witch has been utterly delightful.
Catherine has been with the franchise since the very first movie, The Good Witch, which spans 14 years, so it shouldn't be a surprise that much of the cast has become like family.
It's not only the Hallmark corporate atmosphere that gets the credit here. "She's just great," Catherine says of Good Witch lead, Catherine Bell.
"I tell her this because I want her to know this, that she's the best number one...

The Cma Awards have had the most consistent hosting situation of any music awards show in television, but 11 years after installing Brad Paisley and Carrie Underwood as the reliable faces of the telecast, even ABC and the Country Music Association have decided it’s time for a switch. Come Nov. 13, Underwood will return for year 12, but Paisley is exiting, to be replaced in 2019 by the combination of Dolly Parton and Reba McEntire as “special guest hosts” alongside Underwood.
The move is surprising not least of all because McEntire has been a longtime on-again, off-again host of the rival Academy of Country Music Awards, going back to 1986. McEntire most recently hosted the ACMs out of Las Vegas this past April, for the second year in a row — a role she presumably won’t be stepping back into in 2020, unless the CMAs and ACMs are much more into sharing than previously imagined.
