This X-Men ’97 article contains spoilers.
X-Men ’97 ended with more than a few spinning plates. Sure, Bastion was defeated, but the events sent some of the X-Men to the far future and others into the past. And yet a few others were zapped to parts unknown, such as Wolverine, who remains in critical condition after Magneto ripped out his adamantium skeleton. Back in the present, Forge and Bishop make plans to find their friends. Then there’s the matter of Professor X and Magneto’s mental states, which seems to be pointing toward the coming of the terrible Onslaught.
As that last point reminds us, as wonderful as X-Men ’97 is, a lot of its power comes from the Marvel comics that it adapts. The first season of X-Men ’97 ran quickly through some important storylines from the comics, including Inferno, Mutant Massacre, Lifedeath, and Operation: Zero Tolerance.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" follow.
Rejoice, my X-Fans, for your theories have prevailed.
The "X-Men '97" season 1 finale, the three-part epic "Tolerance is Extinction," ended in shocking fashion. The big bad Bastion sent Asteroid M on a collision course with Earth, deciding to force humanity into extinction rather than evolution. Professor X, unable to not see the good in Magneto, even after his frenemy's torturous attack on Wolverine, pulls Erik back to the light with a telepathic therapy session. The X-Men, once more including Magneto, save the world. But then they vanish, pulled through time to the past, future (Cyclops and Jean), and parts unrevealed. The past X-Men, stranded in Egypt, circa 3000 BC, meet a grey-skinned mutant that fans will certainly recognize.
As is Marvel tradition, there's also post-credits scene revealing that, while the X-Men are scattered across time, an old foe is rearing his head. In the present, En Sabah Nur's future self,...

Welcome to the latest installment of our 100 Word Hits column, in association with comics retailer The Unreality Store, in which Matthew De Monti brings us short, sharp reviews of the latest books to hit comic stores over the past month or so!
Alien Vol.2 #1 Written by Phillip Kennedy Johnson | Art by Julius Ohta
The second volume of Kennedy Johnson’s Alien epic begins in typically brutal fashion with the aliens ripping through the population of Tobler-9, a showcase planet belonging to the Weyland-Yutani Corporation. Yes, those guys again! Cut to Europa-5 and there’s a group of androids living out an idyllic existence that’s about to be shattered by the United System army. Turns out the U.S needs their help to get something off Tobler-9. Some kind of alien egg…
A great opener setting up this new story arc and what a beauty of a cover by Bjorn Barends!

Han Solo & Chewbacca #4 Written by Marc Guggenheim | Art by David Messina
This issue begins with a Wookie fight as Black Krrsantan takes on Chewie. Krrsantan takes off with Han as his captive but not before Chewie puts a tracker on his ship. Chewie and, the still to be verified Han’s father, pursue Han to the Mollo Tanka Planetoid where Augustus Graves has Han captive. There’s all kinds of ways to build a creative program, but the two big ones are to follow a specific editorial plan or to work with a curated group of popular creators and let them do their thing.
The first is most common; you tend to see the second in more highbrow media areas, like prestige publishing imprints and classical music…and, maybe, that means they’re already in a sub-genre, but just don’t like to think of themselves that way.
In the ’90s, DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint was undergoing a slow-motion transformation. It formed out of a cluster of very popular comics that were mostly Type One (superhero comics taken seriously!) but were often presented to the public as Type Two (all British writers! all the time!). But the core superhero universe was on its own path to take itself seriously, in a very different and much more tedious way (pouches!

Past The Last Mountain #1 Written by Paul Allor | Art by Louie Joyce
Neil Cutter works at Westfield Penal Preserve in Montana and he’s dealing with a prison break. Westfield this isn’t your normal penitentiary, the preserve is designed to house magical creatures since the ending of their war with humanity. Willa the dragon, Kate the faun and Simon the juvenile troll have escaped and are heading to a mythical refuge for magical creatures and hot on their heels are Cutter’s men.
There are definitely shades of WE3 in the story, the art is nice and there’s a series of short stories to enhance the sense of world-building.

There will probably be spoilers. If you worry about such things on a thirty-year-old obscure Vertigo comic, well, I wonder how you manage to live in the modern world, but go off and read something else on the Internet instead.
I don’t think I read this the first time out. I think I’d remember it. But it also is very much the kind of thing I was reading in 1993: I followed nearly all of Vertigo, and was a fan of Peter Milligan’s writing. So I both don’t know how I missed it and can’t figure out how I could have read it and utterly forgotten it.
I’m talking about Enimga: The Definitive Edition , a spiffy new-ish edition of an eight-issue comics series from those heady early Vertigo days, when it was “superhero comics with adult themes” and not “HBO-style shows in comics form.

Titan Comics' "Dan Dare" is based on the popular Brit comic book title and developing live-action TV series, originally created by Reverend Marcus Morris and Frank Hampson. The Titan series is written by Peter Milligan and illustrated by Alberto Fouche, with covers by Christian Ward, Alberto Fouche and Chris Weston:
“...in 'Dan Dare: Pilot of the Future', Dan struggles to figure out what to do with himself as the 'Sol System' enjoys peace for the first time in human history.
"However, when an unknown alien vessel arrives in the solar system...
"...and obliterates a moon of Saturn in a show of strength...

Folks, we live in interesting times. We just received a trailer for Venom: Let There Be Carnage, the sequel to the surprise 2018 hit Venom, starring Tom Hardy, Tom Hardy, and a whole lot of people who weren’t trying nearly as hard as Tom Hardy. This sequel brings in Woody Harrelson as Broadway star Carnage about 30 years after his comic book debut.
Seriously, though. Carnage appeared in a Broadway musical ten years before he got to be in the movies. I’ll never get over that.
If you haven’t watched the crazy trailer yet, press pause on your Green Jelly CD and check this out.
What can we gather from this trailer?
The Return Of The Bromance
The Venom symbiote has become more acclimated to life on Earth, going so far as learning at least a little Chinese and getting into cooking. If that’s what you call it.

This one is long overdue as I bring my Creator in Focus segment back to the pages of eBuying Comics – last seen in Week 38 where I looked at the key issues of Todd McFarlane’s career. I have decided to make a tweak to the segment, previously I looked at current values of those key issues. Where as now the main focus will be on finding good bargains on eBay for the key issues of your favourite creators. Also I think it would be fun and more beneficial to talk about the collected versions available of creators works, which makes it easier for readers to seek out. Especially with the early career stuff. Its useful to know what volumes certain issues are in, whether its paperback or hardback is good knowledge to share with the comics community, new or old readers alike.

One of the execs behind Valiant's resurrection is starting a new publisher with a different plan. Meet Bad Idea.
Dinesh Shamdasani, one of the people who helped make Valiant Comics' rebirth in 2011 such a success, is back at it with a new comic company. For fans of his tenure with the Bloodshot publisher, this new venture is going to look familiar.
Shamdasani and his team announced Bad Idea Comics, a new publisher with a curious business model. The company plans on only releasing one or two titles a month, only as physical media, without collections or variant covers, to only 20 comic shops around the United States at launch (with plans to expand into more as certain criteria are met).
The creators on board include some outstanding names.
Joshua Dysart, writer of Imperium and The Life and Death of Toyo Harada. Jody Houser, the definitive writer behind Faith.

Exclusive: I hear that Bad Robot, through its new deal at Warner Media, is exclusively developing both film and TV ideas based on DC’s Justice League Dark universe at Warner Bros.
This deal is all very nascent and at this point in time there aren’t any specific projects or characters that are being specifically developed out of the franchise. I understand that Bad Robot’s Head of Motion Pictures Hannah Minghella and Head of Television Ben Stephenson will soon be taking meetings with talent reps and their writing clients on which characters will get their own projects.
Justice League Dark (or Jld team) first appeared in the September 2011 issue of Justice League Dark #1 featuring such superheros, mostly occult and offbeat, as John Constantine, mystic and fortune teller Madame Xanadu, Deadman, Shade, the Changing Man, and Zatanna. The roster is much larger, and members joined later on, with Swamp Thing...

Does Year of the Villain mean a big change for Batman’s puzzling nemesis?
Event comics usually come with a passel of one-off tie ins. Sometimes they’re very good. Sometimes they’re a way of giving someone a try out. Sometimes they’re a way of getting somebody work. These are all good things! But very rarely are they ever impactful on a character or the direction of a line. That may change this week, as Mark Russell and Scott Godlewski bring the Riddler into Year of the Villain with one of the most introspective superhero comics in a while, one that potentially foreshadows a big status quo change for one of Batman’s oldest villains.
The premise of the entire Year of the Villain arc has Apex Lex, a powered-up Lex Luthor, gone full evil again after years spent straddling the line of “dick” and...

Legendary adult-oriented DC imprint, Vertigo Comics, will close down by January 2020.
The iconic comics imprint that brought readers The Sandman, Preacher, Hellblazer, Fables, Y: The Last Man, and others will close its doors in 2020. According to THR, DC Comics plans to shutter Vertigo Comics, as well as young adult imprints DC Zoom and DC Ink, starting in January.
Replacing them will be three, age-specific imprints: DC Kids for ages 8-12, DC for 13 and up, and the adult-oriented DC Black Label for readers 17 and older. Series currently running under DC Zoom, Ink, and Vertigo will be integrated into these new imprints. This means that series like Sandman Universe, which expands the world of the Vertigo's most famous character, may live on under Black Label. Additionally, projects previously announced for Black Label before the restructure will still be published by the imprint.

Ah, Vertigo, the house that Neil built. Gaiman that is. Without Neil Gaiman there would probably be no Vertigo, or at least not the successful imprint it became. Being fair, it’s also right to say without Editor Karen Berger there would definitely be no Vertigo as not only did she recruit Neil Gaiman to work at DC, she also brought in Grant Morrison, Jamie Delano and Peter Milligan among others and brought a new sensibility to DC. If there’s one thing Americans like, its British cynicism. What’s the sign of a good book? Really making you look forward to that next issue. What’s the sign of a Great book? One that makes you check the schedules each week to see when it’s going to appear. For me, this is a great book. Milligan is writing it on several levels, you can choose to just enjoy it on the one level you so choose, or you can look for all the hidden winks and nods, the sly digs at authority and the political classes, the microscope held up to society. Most importantly for me, it continues to bottle the essence of what made The Prisoner great, while making strides forward with new characters and new interpretations.
Final issue time, and I’ll say up front I’m expecting a nice little tidy resolution.

I’m here because I’m looking backwards. Why else would any of us be reading the first collection of a nearly thirty-year-old comics series? [1]
I recently read the first collection of the current Shade the Changing Girl series, which reminded me of this Peter Milligan/Chris Bachalo/Mark Pennington version, which began in 1990 and ran through 1996, ending after 70 issues.
It was a fairly typical Vertigo series of the day, one of the many that followed Alan Moore’s template from Swamp Thing: start with a minor DC character, one as close to a joke as possible. Take him seriously, but not in comic-book terms — take him seriously in world-historical terms, bring in whatever other pop-culture or serious-culture material that energizes you and you can bolt onto it somehow. Run that character through horror plots, generally one or two issues long, each one encapsulating something frightening or appalling or norm-breaking.

This series has been blinding since it’s relaunch. Smart, sassy, political, satirical, and full of sleight of hand. Know what’s going on? No you don’t. You only think you know what’s going on, rather like Breen, the new Number 6. Oh sure, he thought his plan to infiltrate The Village by pretending to be a traitor was very smart, but he underestimated the psychological assault he was walking into. He’s in there to rescue old partner Carey after all but, hey, she doesn’t seem to want rescuing. Or does she? Another fly in the proverbial is the fact Section, his head of department in MI5, is now in The Village as well, supposedly kidnapped. He also just happens to be the only person who knows Breen is not a traitor. Oh, what a tangled web we weave…...

What a great re-launch of this property issue 1 was. Any doubts there were about The Prisoner, the epitome of late 1960′s quirky TV along with shows like The Avengers, being out of date or simply not relevant were firmly put to bed. Peter Milligan managed to seamlessly combine the elements of what made the original great, with elements from the here and now, and created a whole new beast. Information is power, was then and is even more so now. Just ask Breen.
Breen, of course, is the newest inhabitant of The Village. For those coming in late, Breen is a MI5 agent, and has deliberately got himself captured and made a ‘guest’ of The Village. Why? His partner and lover, Carey, was herself taken by The Village, and Breen wants to rescue her. I should say ‘was...

Surely, the last thing on Marvel enthusiasts’ minds right now is next month’s release of Deadpool 2. With Avengers: Infinity War mania having just gotten underway last night – it’s off to a flying start, in case you’ve been living under a rock – the fandom hasn’t even had time to process “certain events” that take place within said film, let alone get all geared up for another Marvel movie.
Well, apparently, Peter W. (Rob Delaney), the superpower-less X-Force member, wasn’t doing what the rest of us had been dying to do since the McU began in 2008, namely watching Avengers: Infinity War late into the night.
The utterly likeable Deadpool 2 star took to his mock Twitter account this morning, something he wouldn’t be able to do had he been up all hours of the night, and Tweeted the below image of Bill Skarsgard with the...

Despite releasing numerous trailers over the last couple of months, it appears there are still surprises to learn about “Deadpool 2.” Eagle-eyed viewers spotted “It” star Bill Skarsgård in a quick shot from the film’s March trailer, which prompted numerous questions about who exactly the man behind Pennywise was playing in the sequel. “Deadpool” has finally confirmed Skarsgård will be a member of the X-Force team and play the mutant Zeitgeist.
Zeitgeist was created by Peter Milligan and artist Mike Allred and first appeared in “X-Force #116.” The mutant’s real name is Axel Cluney and his power is the ability to spew acidic vomit from his mouth. The character is known for wearing a mouth guard, although the first photo of Skarsgård in character doesn’t include one. A caption for the photo reads: “Watch out for Zeitgeist’s acid breath!”

You know something has a place in the national consciousness when it keeps reappearing every generation. The Prisoner has become just such a cult hit, its fans every bit as passionate as those of Star Trek or Star Wars for example. Just so happens I’m a fan of all the above, but The Prisoner is a truly unique concept. I loved the uncertainty of it all. Is what’s going on real? Who are the bad guys? Who can you trust? It originally tapped into a late 1960′s distrust of authority, and it didn’t hurt that it also embraced the spy genre, going through James Bond-fueled popularity at the time. The TV show was surprisingly brief, just 17 episodes, considering how influential the show is, but the show was just the beginning as it turned out.

With this issue the first story arc of the Dan Dare relaunch comes to a close. Or reimagining I guess, as Peter Milligan has chosen to change the relationship between Dan and The Mekon. At least on the surface. What I’ve enjoyed up to now is the air of uncertainty over everything. Is The Mekon genuinely good now? Is Dan being played, or are everyone else being unfair? Is Au Taween right that they are crazy to leave The Mekon alive? It has been fun for sure.
Last issue left us with quite the cliffhanger, would Au Taween kill The Mekon, despite Dan’s attempt to stop her. Dan feels more than ever that he owes The Mekon, after The Mekon formulated a cure for the virus that was killing Dan, Digby, and Professor Peabody. Of course,...

Tis’ the season to write Top Ten lists, as you all well know. Don’t roll your eyes, you know you expect it. I am nothing if not a slave to fashion. I have picked out my personal favourite ten titles of the many books I have read and reviewed this year. You may well disagree but, hey, it’s my list. Enjoy.
10. Tekken (Cavan Scott / Andie Tong)
Tekken was one of those books that didn’t put on any airs and graces, and just delivered to its core audience exactly what they wanted. Action, fighting, action, and, er , fighting. To be fair Cavan Scott tried to get a little emotional depth in, but Andie Tong’s visuals and plenty of action delivered what the fans wanted.
9. Assassins Creed Uprising (Alex Paknadel & Dan Watters / Jose Holder)

If you’re still here for issue 3 then , like me, you’ve been enjoying Peter Milligan’s re-imagining of Dan Dare and his world. Some of the changes have been very slight, just a tweak here, an update there, but the biggest one is The Mekon being on the side of the angels. Apparently. I’m still not sure there isn’t some big master-plan endgame here, but for the time being The Mekon is helping Dan Dare, despite being imprisoned.
Dan needs help as he, Digby and Professor Peabody, while investigating the mysterious huge battleship that has attacked one of Saturn’s moons, come under attack themselves. Seems the ship is from the Treen Imperium, previously ruled by a certain Mekon, and is not taking prisoners. It takes the intervention of a warrior princess, Au Taween, to help save Dan’s ship,...

I always think Dan Dare, rather like Captain America and Superman, is a victim of his own iconic status. He’s great as a symbol, as a painted cover or on a poster, but when it comes to putting him in good stories that’s a little trickier. Sure, it’s been done before, but the average definitely outweighs the good. Expectations weren’t particularly high when I saw Dan Dare being re-launched again to be honest, but when I saw Peter Milligan was involved that piqued my interest quite a bit, and thinking about it, Titan Comics don’t misfire often. Well, that first issue met and most definitely exceeded expectations, giving us (forgive the cliché) a Dan Dare for the future. Plus, it was fun. We like fun.

When it comes to my comic book reading preferences, I have always been an unashamed fan of American comic books. I read my first Superman story at the age of 6 and never looked back. At that time though, in the late 1970′s, American comic books weren’t always that easy to find, and 2000Ad was a little bit beyond me at first (although that changed in the Eighties ). What I could find however were copies of The Eagle, the now legendary British weekly comic, starring a certain Dan Dare. Sure, he wasn’t quite Superman, who is, but he was to my young eyes pretty cool nonetheless.
Since then I have always had a soft spot for Dan Dare, and when he has periodically been relaunched, and reappeared in various comics and magazines I have usually had a glance.

Captain Kronos – like the film – chronicles the adventures of the mysterious and powerful Kronos who has dedicated his life to destroying the evil vampire plague. Once a victim himself, the debonair Hunter knows the vampire’s strengths and weaknesses as well as the dangers of confronting the potent forces of darkness.
Based on the 1974 film, Captain Kronos: Vampire Hunter is the second Hammer title from Titan Comics following the success of the awesome The Mummy: Palimpsest (from Peter Milligan and Ronilson Freire). However unlike other Hammer franchises, Captain Kronos was very much about the heroics of its titular character – and this new book very much follows suit, making it different in many ways from what audiences might expect from a Hammer comic.

So here we are, the dramatic wrap up of what has been a pretty good updating, or reimagining, of The Mummy mythos. Interestingly, like most other genres, The Mummy ultimately comes down to power. The people who have it, the people who want it, and the people who need it. After all the dramatic developments of the previous 4 issues, we are left with a power struggle between various groupings. The Pyramid Club, the lesser of the various evils, The Sect of Anubis, responsible for the entire mess, Kharis, the resurrected High Priest looking for his lost love Nebetah, and Duncan and Angel, caught in the middle of everyone. Something, or someone, has got to give.
The issue starts with a flashback to 1882, and the origin of the conflict between The Sect of Anubis and The Pyramid Club,...

During their 3rd annual Valiant Summit, Valiant Entertainment once again gave us an amazing line up of books that will be released throughout this year, starting with last months launch of X-o Manowar and concluding with December's release of Quantum and Woody. It is important to note that Valiant Entertainment has only been around since their relaunch in 2012. They had such an impact that they won the award of Comic Publisher of the Year from Diamond Comic Distributors that same year. Now they are on the verge of bigger and better things including a YouTube series called Ninjak Vs. The Valiant Universe, a multi-movie deal with Sony which includes a Bloodshot movie and a Quantum and Woody television show that will be made by the Russo brothers, who are currently working on the next Avengers film.
They were very excited about their line up as their first title X-o Manowar #1 has already sold over 90,000 copies,...

To Marvel Entertainment,
Last week I read X-Men Gold #1 and, controversy aside which I won’t be getting into as you have gone above and beyond to address the issue properly and professionally, it really invoked a lot of strong feelings in me. Because of that, I’d like to talk about the X-Men and what they mean to me.
I first discovered X-Men on television when I was in elementary school. I remember watching the first episode and immediately being sucked in. To this day, the Sentinels are still menacing to me and I’ll always have a fondness for Jubilee, Rogue and Storm. I remember the time between Saturday morning after the episode finished to the next Saturday felt like an eternity. I was a shy kid who knew he was queer, but I didn’t understand it. I didn’t have a lot of friends, didn’t...

Now that its first season has wrapped, FX's Legion has to go down as the most audacious superhero show that any big-time TV network has ever attempted – which makes sense, given that it featured a character who's one of the oddest in the history of the X-Men comics. A scarily strong telekinetic mutant, David "Legion" Haller (played by Dan Stevens) has trouble distinguishing between his ability to read minds and the "hearing voices in your head" strain of mental illness. So even in the series' season finale, when David was...
