- Playwright, Poet Author and Lecturer.
- Son of prominent physician and author, Silas Weir Mitchell.
- Brother of noted neurologist, John K. Mitchell.
- Attended schools in Dresden and Paris.
- Took classes at Harvard and Columbia Law School.
- Admitted to the New York bar in 1886.
- Remembered for dramatizing "Vanity Fair" , under the title "Becky Sharp" and "Pendennis", works by William Makepeace Thackeray.
- In 1928 he was one five playwrights asked to conduct a new writing course at the University of Pennsylvania. The others were, Jesse Lynch Williams, Lord Dunsany, Gilbert Emery and Rachel Crothers.
