When held up to the heady heights of its BAFTA-winning spiritual predecessor Twenty Twelve, the first series of W1A fell short on occasions.
But with a new series opener in which a high-level management power struggle starts simmering alongside the usual japes, hi-jinks and gaffes at Broadcasting House, the BBC's self-flagellating satire is at last hitting its stride.
Hugh Bonneville's still the star of the show as Ian Fletcher, keeping a sharp focus on charter renewal as his contemporaries in the Way Ahead Task Force fall over themselves (almost literally at one point) to get one over on their professional rivals. There's whispers of a new senior post at stake, and everyone seems to have their eye on it.

Jeremy Clarkson's face will be blurred and his name bleeped out when he returns to the BBC. The former 'Top Gear' presenter features in the new series of comedy 'W1A', a fictional story which satirises life at the BBC, next month and writer John Morton has revealed he decided it would be best to pixelate his face and bleep out his name after he was sacked from the motoring show last month for attacking a producer. BBC mockumentary W1A will return for a second series next year, with Hugh Bonneville returning as Ian Fletcher.
The series, which is a follow-up to Olympics comedy Twenty Twelve, will see the corporation's Head of Values Ian struggling with the issue of the BBC's charter renewal, The Guardian reports.
The second series of W1A will be produced in-house and premiere with a 60-minute episode, followed by three 30-minute episodes. John Morton returns as writer.
No further casting details or storylines have been announced, although Jessica Hynes and Olivia Colman may briefly reprise their Twenty Twelve roles, as they did in the first series of W1A.

London – The BBC is turning to one of Britain's best-known TV satirists to take a look at the U.K. public broadcaster itself. BBC Two controller Janice Hadlow and Shane Allen, controller of comedy commissioning at the BBC, have ordered W1A, writer John Morton’s follow-up to hit comedy series Twenty Twelve, a satire tied to the London 2012 Summer Olympics. The show from BBC In-House Comedy will see actor Hugh Bonneville's Twenty Twelve character Ian Fletcher, the now ex-head of the fictional "Olympic Deliverance Commission," take up his next big job -- the again fictional

BBC Two has commissioned a follow-up to its comedy Twenty Twelve.
W1A will follow Hugh Bonneville's Ian Fletcher as he takes on his next big job as Head of Values at the BBC.
In his new role, Ian's job task is to reshape and redefine the BBC "in particular for Licence Fee Renegotiation and Charter Renewal in 2016 and 2017".
The new four-part series will also see Jessica Hynes reprising her role of Siobhan Sharpe, but will otherwise feature new situations and characters.
Janice Hadlow, Controller of BBC Two, said: "Twenty Twelve was one of BBC Two's stand out comedy hits last year, and I'm absolutely thrilled that John Morton and the fantastic off-screen team are coming together again as well as some of our most loved characters from the first series."
Morton added: "It isn't a demolition job on anybody or anything, and it isn't one giant in-joke,...

Three other programmes nominated four times: Accused and Last Tango in Halifax, and BBC2 Alfred Hitchcock film, The Girl
It was only to be expected that the BBC's acclaimed coverage of the London Olympics would be recognised at the Bafta television awards.

The comedy about the fictional Olympic Deliverance Commission and their hapless efforts to stage the 2012 Games is in the running for best sitcom in the nominations announced on Tuesday, with three of its stars, Olivia Colman, Jessica Hynes and Hugh Bonneville also nominated.

Parade's End is the leading nominee for the 2013 Broadcasting Press Guild Awards.
The BBC One period drama - based on the novels by Ford Madox Ford - is nominated five times, with stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Roger Allam going head-to-head in the same category.
Both Cumberbatch and Allam are actually given the nod for more than one show, bringing their respective performances in Sherlock and The Thick of It into contention.
Elsewhere, The Hour receives three nominations for stars Peter Capaldi, Ben Whishaw and Anna Chancellor, while Twenty Twelve, Doctor Who and The Great British Bake Off also feature in a list which is heavily dominated by BBC output.
ITV's Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile, the documentary which first revealed the extent of the TV presenter's sexual abuse and has prompted a number of reports, inquires and a major police investigation, is nominated for 'Best Single Documentary'.

Jeremy Renner out-toughs Matt Damon in the fourth Bourne installment, and parkour fans will be delighted. But is the franchise already outmoded?
Legacy projects are very fashionable with the political classes: George W Bush had his George W Bush Presidential Centre; Tony Blair had his reform of the public sector. Fans of John Morton's BBC mockumentary Twenty Twelve will remember apparatchiks debating the way Olympic facilities can be used after the Games are over. Perhaps executives at Universal Pictures, pondering this movie project at the script stage, were telling each other that it should be called The Bourne Sustainability or The Bourne Inclusivity.
The fourth movie in the Bourne franchise is Bourne without Bourne, a bit like the TV show Taggart carrying on after the loss of the title character. But Jason Bourne is not dead. He has not "bequeathed" us this situation in that sense: what seems to...

Is there anything more annoying than being forced to watch a bunch of ads and PSAs after starting up a DVD or Blu-ray that you just paid money to own? Okay, maybe a few. Still, I am guessing this news will not win the MPAA any new fans, and it's further proof that they are going about their quest to end piracy in all the wrong ways. According to Wired, starting this week, new DVD and Blu-ray discs will be forced to include updated anti-piracy warnings that take longer to display and include some additional branches of the government that are now also involved in the fight. John Morton, director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, had this to say about the changes: "Our nation's film and TV business is critical to our economy... Its creativity and imagination have made American entertainment one of our greatest exports over the decades,...

Legitimate customers are getting a special gift when they buy DVDs and Blu-rays in America: 20 seconds of unskippable anti-piracy warnings!
With sales of DVDs and Blu-rays not bringing in the money that studios used to enjoy a few years' back, you'd think that all concerned would be doing everything possible to make disc-based movies as enticing as possible. To reward honest customers. To make sure that buying a disc is a no-brainer.
And then you happen across a story like this.
Basically, in the Us, Immigration and Customs Enforcement - Ice to its presumably very few friends - has come up with a plan to help in the ongoing fight against piracy. Would this be, you'd rightly ask, something that legitimately deters people from buying a pirate disc, or downloading something illegally? Has it come up with a clever and cunning plan to enrich the value of buying a disc in the first place?...

A first time British feature that is a deeply eccentric, haunting marvel
If Syd Barrett had ever written and directed a movie, it might well have looked like this: an indie tragicomedy from the dark heart of rural suburbia, by newcomers Tom Kingsley and Will Sharpe. Black Pond is funny, dreamily lyrical, armour-plated with eccentric self-confidence and also intensely English. It also, I have to say, has one of the most disturbing dream sequences I have seen for a while. Looking around for recent comparisons, I find myself reaching for Nick Whitfield's Skeletons, or Ben Wheatley's Kill List, possibly Joanna Hogg's Unrelated, or even John Morton's TV mockumentary series People Like Us.
This last reference is, of course, due to the powerful, even sensational presence of Chris Langham, making his first professional appearance since his recent disgrace. He creates a portrait of bourgeois midlife crisis that...

The BBC has denied allegations of plagiarism relating to its comedy Twenty Twelve. The series, which began on Monday, stars Hugh Bonneville and Jessica Hynes as members of the organising team preparing for the Olympic Games. Australian writers John Clarke and Ross Stevenson have now told the Sydney Morning Herald that they believe the show is based on their series The Games, which ran in 1998 and 2000. The pair also pitched the format to the BBC with the help of Kath And Kim producer Rick McKenna. Clarke and Stevenson alleged that Twenty Twelve writer John Morton had been given DVDs of their series and suggested that the claims of plagiarism are "very sound". "We haven't seen Twenty Twelve so it would be unreasonable of us to make an accusation of copying, but it's pretty clear where they got the format," Clarke said. "It (more)...

The docuspoof/mockumentary format feels curiously old-fashioned suddenly. It’s the perfect approach to take with BBC4′s Twenty Twelve, which charts the efforts of an inept Olympic Deliverance Commission to promote London 2012, but there was something too safe and cozy about the whole endeavour. Almost like it’s a part of the Olympic marketing and, with a future cameo from Lord Sebastian Coe himself, that’s probably half-true. So, rather than deliver a scabrous and insightful criticism of the Olympic Games, Twenty Twelve is just a quietly mocking series that elicits the odd giggle.
