Horror crosses over with science fiction and fantasy in all kinds of ways, from speculative surveillance to monsters with a taste for human flesh. Here are our picks for the best new horror books to bet on in August 2022.
The Wild Hunt by Emma Seckel
Type: Novel

Release date: August 2
Den of Geek says: This dark historical fantasy draws on cryptid lore for the story of a town besieged by haunting bird spirits. It could be perfect for a hint of Halloween in the summertime.
Publisher’s summary: The islanders have only three rules: don’t stick your nose where it’s not wanted, don’t mention the war, and never let your guard down during October.

The follow-up to Classic Monsters Unleashed, Shakespeare Unleashed is a horror anthology that features new, original stories from Joe R. Lansdale, Ian Doescher, Seanan McGuire, Cullen Bunn, Jonathan Maberry, and more! Now on Kickstarter, I caught up with editor James Aquilone to talk about the origins of this unique horror project, working with this talented group of creators, and future plans!
Following the success and release of Classic Monsters Unleashed, what inspired you to reimagine Shakespeare’s works as short horror stories (and sonnets) in Shakespeare Unleashed?
The success of Classic Monsters Unleashed caught me by surprise. I had thought of it as a one-off, but then people kept asking me if I was going to do another book. So I started thinking what an Unleashed series would be and what other literary or fictional universes we could delve into. I didn't want to do just another monster book or Classic Monsters Unleashed II,...

Hello, dear readers! To paraphrase a popular movie, “We’re in the Endgame now,” as Halloween is now merely only a few days away. If you’re looking for some last-minute viewing ideas to get you to the spooky season finish line, we definitely have a great array of choices heading home on Tuesday. The biggest recommendation that I can personally make in regard to perfect Halloween movie experiences is the Wnuf Halloween Special, which is getting a killer Blu-ray release tomorrow. Arrow Films is giving Dario Argento’s Deep Red a 4K upgrade this week, too, and Severin Films is showing love to both An Angel for Satan and Beyond Darkness.
Other releases for October 26th include Don’t Breathe 2, The Amazing Mr. X, Boardinghouse, Eye of the Devil, Skull: The Mask, Frankenstein’s Daughter, and Underworld: Limited Edition 5-Movie Collection.

As another autumn approaches, horror hounds look forward to the chill of pumpkin guts on their hands, the crunch of leaves under their shoes, and, for some, pulling their copy of October Dreams: A Celebration of Halloween off the bookshelf for another round of seasonal reading. Published in 2000, Cemetery Dance’s collection of Halloween stories, reflections, and essays now has a sequel on the way.
Featuring an abundance of short pieces by a wide range of authors, October Dreams II: A Celebration of Halloween doesn’t yet have an official release date, but it is expected to come out soon in a hardcover edition from Cemetery Dance. In four short years, JournalStone Publishing has positioned itself as an attractive home to established authors and new talents alike. With a depth chart that includes Jonathan Maberry, Rick Hautala, Lisa Morton and Christopher Golden, and a deep catalog of horror, science fiction and fantasy novels and anthologies – not to mention an acclaimed quarterly magazine and a prominent genre website – I’d be shocked if you haven’t happened across this imprint already. But just in case you haven’t, consider this your formal introduction. JournalStone was founded in 2009 in San Francisco by Christopher Payne. It started out as a blog before transitioning into a publishing company the following year. JournalStone followed the unconventional route of building its initial slate via a novel writing contest. The first winner, That Which Shall Not Be by Brett J. Talley, was nominated by the Horror Writers Association in the “Superior Achievement in a...

Summer’s End is a Halloween story, but it’s less about the trappings of the holiday and more about the ancient beliefs surrounding Samhain, the Gaelic festival marking the end of harvest in which Halloween’s roots reside. So, if you’re expecting something that celebrates plastic pumpkins, drugstore costumes and candy corn, this is not your Halloween story. But if you’re in the mood to peek into the darkness behind the revelry, then step right up. Author Lisa Morton seamlessly casts herself in her new novella as a respected horror author and Halloween expert – no stretch for Morton, who can lay legitimate claim to both titles – who is contacted by Irish archaeologist Conor ó Cuinn about an ancient manuscript he possesses. The man is nearly rabid in his belief that the manuscript contains information that upends virtually everything we know and believe about the season of Samhain…...

What is a professional writer? Is it somebody who consistently turns out a certain quality level of writing? Is it somebody who is paid for their work? Is it a storyteller who keeps the reader enthralled as they weave their way through the imaginary scenarios and images they create on the page? Is it somebody who is a household name? If you answered yes to the above questions then you are talking about Gene O'Neill. Well, yes to all of the questions except the last one. But after 30 years he stands ready to make that one happen also. Here is part three of our interview with author Gene O'Neill.
So after 30 years in the writing world would you do something different if you were to do it again?
I don't think so. I think a lot of people look back on their lives and would like to redo them. I...

Blood Lite III: Aftertaste
The third book in the hilarious and horrifying national bestselling anthology series from the Horror Writers Association–a frightfest of sidesplitting stories from such “New York Times” bestselling authors as Jim Butcher, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Heather Graham, L.A. Banks, Kelley Armstrong, and many more
Horror fiction explores the dark side of human nature, often pushing the limits of violence, graphic gore, and extreme emotions. But with the popularity of shows and movies, such as “The Walking Dead,” “True Blood,” “Twilight,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” audiences have demonstrated their love for the genre–especially accompanied with a dose of humor to tone down the terror.

Wild Girls by Lisa Morton (Bad Moon Books)
Jessie and Dens are two roomies in a small southern town who like movies, drinking, collecting glittery stickers…and the occasional killing spree. When novice reporter Noelle begins to put high heels together with certain puncture wounds, is she about to make a move up to a major paper…or become the next victim?
I have been a fan of Lisa Morton’s writing, both non-fiction and fiction and was extremely excited when I heard about her new novella “Wild Girls” published by Bad Moon Books.
All I have to say is Lisa took the gloves off on this one and delivered a blood soaked joyride that was a hell of a lot of fun to read.
It definitely isn’t what I am used to from Lisa and that is not a bad thing. I love to see writers get out...

Witch Hunts by Lisa Morton & Rocky Wood
Illustrated by Greg Chapman
(McFarland)
For three centuries, as the Black Death rampaged through Europe and the Reformation tore the Church apart, tens of thousands were arrested as witches and subjected to torture and execution, including being burned alive. This graphic novel examines the background; the witch hunters’ methods; who profited; the brave few who protested; and how the Enlightenment gradually replaced fear and superstition with reason and science.
Famed witch hunters Heinrich Kramer, architect of the infamous Malleus Maleficarum, and Matthew Hopkins, England’s notorious “Witchfinder General,” are covered as are the Salem Witch Trials and the last executions in Europe.
About the Authors
Rocky Wood is the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of many books about Stephen King. He is president of the Horror Writers Association and lives in Victoria, Australia.
Lisa Morton is a playwright, fiction and reference book author and screenwriter.

Monsters of L.A. by Lisa Morton
(Bad Moon Books)
In these pages you’ll find the dark stars you grew up watching: Frankenstein, Dracula, Mr. Hyde, the Phantom, the Hunchback…all the silent ones and the first to find their voices are here, and they’re even presented in roughly the order in which they first appeared on a silver screen. The Haunted House of the ‘30s gives way to the Werewolf of the ‘40s, the Monsters of L.A. Creature of the ‘50s, and so on, all the way up to our favorite modern boogeyman, the Zombie.
In some of these stories, you’ll find an earthly incarnation of a famous namesake: Frankenstein is a patched-together, homeless vet, the Invisible Woman is so ordinary you’d never see her; but some of these familiar friends — Dracula, the Devil, or those seriously creepy Clowns — will be instantly recognizable.

Another year is coming to an end. Where does the time go? Seems the older I get the faster the time goes and there is no surer sign than that of me getting into the E-Reader game.
I finally broke down and bought a Kindle this year and no the world didn’t end. In fact I am very happy I did. I will first and foremost always love the feel of a real book; the fragrance, the crisp clean pages being turned and the weight of it gently held in my hands.
The Kindle has allowed me to read the back catalogs of many authors I love that I wouldn’t have otherwise been able afford to do. Plus, a lot of publishers and authors are sending me Kindle books for review, which is a lot better than Pdf’s. As I had to print the Pdf books out.

Editor: Stephen Jones.
Writers: Peter Atkins, Peter Crowther, Paul Finch, Christopher Fowler, Tim Lebbon, Paul McAuley, Kim Newman, John Llewellyn Probert, Mark Samuels, Pat Cadigan, Scott Edelman, Jo Fletcher, Robert hood, Tanith Lee, Lisa Morton, Sarah Pinborough, Jay Russell, Mandy Slater, and Michael Marshall Smith.
There seems to be a massive resurgence in everything zombie, or zombie-like nowadays. From books such as Craig Dilouie's The Infection, to film e.g. World War Z and even in digital games like "Dead Island," there is no shortage of undead material to get your rotten hands onto. Therefore, the zombie literature genre is a competitive market, one where the creme (cream) thankfully shambles to the top. This is the case with Stephen Jones' version of the coming zombocalypse. Released in paperback form December 7th, Zombie Apocalypse unites several horror fiction writers to believably tell tales of the undead. In no time, London falls,...

Now for my annual list of my favorite books from 2010. I managed to read 56 books this year, basically one a week. That is along with various magazines that I manage to squeeze in also; Diabetic Forecast; Home Theater Magazine, Cemetery Dance, Morpheus Tales etc. Also, along with spending time with the amazing new woman in my life, working on my sites, taking care of my dog, training in mixed martial arts, taking care of my Diabetes and writing my own stuff. I need another me. But all in all it was a great year for horror fiction in my opinion. So without further adieu here they are:
1.) By Wizard Oak – Peter Crowther
By far my favorite book this year. Mr. Crowther took witches to a whole new level. It was decadent, dark, nasty and scary as hell. Loved every second of it. If I had read this instead of seeing...

The Samhanach by Lisa Morton
“On a Halloween night 300 years ago, something rose out of a Scottish bog to curse the McCafferty clan. Now, in 2010, single mother Merran McCafferty finds her suburban Halloween celebrations torn apart by the arrival of the Samhanach, an ancient trickster demon. When the Samhanach tries to steal Merran’s young daughter, Merran is forced to put aside reason and accept that magic is real, and bogies really do exist on Halloween night.”
The second in Bad Moon Book’s annual Halloween novella.
The calender may turning towards December but for me Halloween is a year long celebration and what better way to celebrate our favorite holiday than a Halloween tale by none other than Lisa Morton.
Lisa is no stranger to Halloween, she is considered by many to be one of the world’s foremost authorities on our favorite haunted holiday.

This past weekend at World Horror Con in Brighton, UK, the Horror Writers Association revealed the winners of the 2009 Stoker Awards. The recipients list, for superior achievement in all aspects of horror writing, reads like a who's who, or at least a list of names you should know and will be seeing again.
Also presented was the Lifetime Achievement Award to Brian Lumley and William F. Nolan. The Specialty Press Award went to Ray Russel and Rosalie Parker of Tartarus Press. In addition, the Silver Hammer Award, for outstanding service to the organization, was presented to Kathryn Ptacek while the President's Richard Laymon Service Award went to Vince A. Liaguno.
The awards, named for Dracula scribe Bram Stoker, were special this year in that it was the first time they've been presented outside the North American continent, showing that the Hwa truly strives to be a worldwide entity for horror.

“Theatre director Beth Ortiz is the newest resident of The Castle, an exclusive Los Angeles artists’ community. Anxious actors aren’t all Beth has to worry about in her new space, however, for The Castle has a secret history of madness and murder, and a celebrity artist who develops a strange fixation on Beth.
And The Castle also happens to be haunted.
By some particularly uneasy spirits.”
Lisa Morton is probably best known for her short fiction (she won the Bram Stoker Award for short fiction in 2006) and for her non-fiction (she won the Bram Stoker Award for Non-Fiction in 2008 for A Hallowe’en Anthology: Literary and Historical Writings Over the Centuries). She is also a screenwriter and was editor for the anthology Midnight Walk which I reviewed at the link.
Castle of Los Angeles is a genuinely creepy story about The Castle, an artist’s community and theater in La.

Once again, the Mystery & Imagination Bookshop in Glendale, CA, was the place to be for genre gold, this time for the launch party and signing for the new horror anthology, The Bleeding Edge. Published by Cycatrix Press, this collection of 19 tales by modern masters of the macabre, edited by Jason V Brock and William F. Nolan, received a lavish send-off by a host of its contributors. The book itself is a handsomely mounted volume, printed in a limited edition of 400 and an extremely limited deluxe signed edition of 75.
As usual, hosts and proprietors Malcolm and Christine Bell managed the moiling mobs of fans with courtesy and aplomb, showing how one should run the last standing brick-and-mortar genre bookstore in America’s second-largest city.
Jason Brock took a moment from the busy event to speak with FM.

Remember books? You know those collections of paper that had writing on them? Think analog websites. Well, back in the olden days, they could be as scary as movies.
I grew up a bookworm courtesy of my parents. They read constantly, and made sure I had a library card as soon as I could read. (Libraries = analog ISPs.) I devoured horror paperbacks, and in one notable reading marathon, read Audrey Rose, beginning to end, in one 24 hour sitting. I even spent the summer I turned 12 working at Aunt Bonnie’s Used Books in Helena, Mt. No salary; I was paid in all the paperbacks I could lug home, which meant my collection of horror movie novelizations grew into the hundreds. (I sold them all in college for money and have spent the last decade buying them all again.)
Now it’s the future, and more and more people turn to the Internet for reading material.

There is so much great horror fiction out on the fringe these days that there’s literally something for every niche. And if you don’t feel like limiting yourself to any one subgenre, you can get your hands on some groovy anthology collections that pack a variety of twisted genre tales for your reading pleasure.
The latest is Darkhouse Publishing's Midnight Walk, a collection of stories edited by Bram Stoker Award-winning editor Lisa Morton. ”Venture into the past or future, or stay in the not-so-comfortable present, with such stories as ‘The Measure of a Man’, ‘The Svancara Supper Society’, and ‘Inside Out’. If it’s a change of scenery you're looking for, ‘Monsoon Devil’ and ‘Diana and the Goong-Si’ will take you places you've never imagined. If watching legends come to life is more to your liking, ‘The Bear Who Swallowed the Sky’ and ‘The Guixi Sisters’ will oblige.
