Shanghai Film Festival Sets Dates For Return As In-Person Event
Shanghai International Film Festival (Siff) has confirmed that this year’s edition will take place June 9-18, 2023, marking the festival’s return as an in-person event following its cancellation last year. The festival was scheduled to take place as a physical event in June 2022, but had to cancel shortly before it commenced due to strict lockdown restrictions imposed on the city of Shanghai when Covid-19 levels started to spike. It was previously announced that Siff Market, the festival’s industry platform, is moving to Longemont Hotel, which places it closer to Siff’s main venue at the Shanghai Film Art Center and adjacent Crowne Plaza Hotel. As in previous years, the festival will host several competition strands through its Golden Goblet (Jinjue) Awards, including feature films, Asian new talent, documentaries, animation and short films. Saudi director Haifaa Al Mansour’s long-gestating female empowerment feature film “Miss Camel” is among the projects being supported by Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Film Festival Foundation. The org has announced the recipients of the Red Sea Fund’s latest round of grants for Saudi, Arab and African films.
Al Mansour made waves in 2013 with “Wadjda,” about a 10-year-old Saudi girl who wants to ride a bicycle even though it is forbidden in her country. She more recently directed English-language biopic “Mary Shelley,” starring Elle Fanning, and the comedy drama “The Perfect Candidate,” which launched from Venice in 2019, about a young female physician who manoeuvres through her male-dominated society to run in municipal elections.
“Miss Camel” is about a Saudi teen who will do anything to escape her arranged marriage and fulfill her goal of attending art school outside of Saudi Arabia, according to a synopsis.

Gothic Fantastico-Four Italian Tales of Terror
Blu-ray
Arrow Video
Starring Barbara Nelli, Helga Liné, Franco Nero, Erica Blanc
Written by Giovanni Grimaldi, Bruno Corbucci
Directed by Massimo Pupillo, Alberto De Martino, Mino Guerrini, Damiano Damiani
The success of 1957’s I Vampiri, a grimly beautiful fantasy directed by Riccardo Freda and Mario Bava, provoked an unexpected trend in the country known for neo-realism; Italian horror films began to embrace the classical romanticism of Rebecca over the modernistic shocks of Psycho. Elegant nightmares like Bava’s Black Sunday cast their spell and soon this new breed of gothics—united by sumptuous black and white photography—dominated movie theaters with tbeir come-hither promise of seductive spirits and strategically lit negligees.
A few of these thrillers were more brazen in their approach—flaunting their teasing nudity and blood-soaked denouements, exploitation fare like Atom Age Vampire and The Playgirls and the Vampire took aim at...

Richard Fleischer’s Biblical epic is a class act all the way, and one of producer Dino De Laurentiis’s greatest accomplishments. Anthony Quinn’s guilty, perplexed bandit survives and subsists but never understands the importance of the man crucified in his place; the view of early Christianity is respectful and free of pious clichés. It’s an excellent image of the ancient world, with gladiator scenes that are possibly the best ever. Fleisher does exceedingly well with the enormous sets and a well-chosen international cast: Ernest Borgnine, Valentina Cortese, Vittorio Gassman, Katy Jurado, Arthur Kennedy, Silvana Mangano, Jack Palance.

Having inherited the family obsession, she is determined to help her father (Joseph Cotten) realize his long-frustrated ambition of creating human life in his laboratory. Dr Brett Danaher.
Dr Brett Danaher, a visiting research professor of economics at Carnegie Mellon University, was in Sydney Tuesday night, presenting new research on the impact of court-ordered blocking of pirate sites at an event hosted by the Australian Screen Association (Asa).
Danaher has three criteria by which to evaluate the effectiveness of site blocking — whether it decreases visits to the blocked sites, whether it decreases total piracy, and whether it increases legal consumption..
.Measuring the causal effect of piracy website blocking is difficult", he said. "We studied three waves of court-ordered ISP site blocking in the UK using a dataset on actual Internet user behaviour,. said Dr Danaher.
Danaher's research has found that while blocking just one major piracy site does not reduce piracy or increase legal sales, simultaneously blocking a number of popular piracy sites caused a meaningful decrease in total piracy and a significant increase in legal consumption of video content.

While visiting Cincinnati, Ohio last week for a lecture I was fortunate enough to discover the American Sign Museum, thanks to architect and preservationist Paul Muller, who arranged for me to get a personal tour with managing director Brad Huberman. As an unabashed fan of vintage advertising signs, I was in hog heaven. This impressive institution attracts visitors from near and far...and no wonder. It embraces the worlds of hand-painted signs, billboards, barns, wooden and porcelain pieces, neon and, yes, individually crafted movie posters. The collection includes books, photos and documents dealing with the art, craft, and...

Severin Films make their return to the UK home video market with the Blu-ray release of two Jess Franco films in their library, She Killed in Ecstasy and Vampyros Lesbos – erotically charged Euro-horrors starring Franco fave Soledad Miranda which mark the pinnacle of Franco’s career. The former, a revenge thriller, is considered the best of the 200-odd films the Spanish auteur has made, whilst the latter is a crowd-pleasing slice of sleaze (who doesn’t love lesbian vampires) that is also an oddly-faithful adaptation of Dracula.

What are widely considered to be the finest works of late, great Euro-cult master Jess Franco’s labyrinthine career, his 1971 erotic horrors Vampyros Lesbos and She Killed in Ecstasy have long been sought after by cult cinema collectors. Now, for the first time ever in the UK, the fully restored, uncensored versions of both films will be available in Special Editions from Severin Films.
Both films star the bewitching beauty Soledad Miranda, who was tragically killed before either film was released, and achieved additional cult status thanks to the sexadelic, ultra groovy soundtrack that became an unexpected dance floor hit three decades after original release.
Vampyros Lesbos has already had successful and acclaimed theatrical screenings in the UK ahead of these releases, and the time is set for the extraordinary work of the mercurial Franco to reach out to a brand new audience. Featuring newly created cover art by Wes Benscoter,...

Titles arriving on Tuesday include newer movies like Cub, Ejecta and Closer to God as well as the latest from the Soska Sisters, Vendetta. Several older films are getting an HD overhaul on Blu-ray too, including Nomads, The Hunger, Nightmare Castle, The Wife Killer and the supernaturally-infused Burn, Witch, Burn which was also co-penned by Richard Matheson.
And while it may not necessarily be a full-on genre movie, it’s worth noting that Shout! Factory is also releasing the criminally underrated cyber-adventure/thriller Hackers onto Blu-ray this week to celebrate its upcoming 20th anniversary.
Burn, Witch, Burn (Kino Lorber, Blu-ray)
The powers of dark magic rule the night in this chilling masterpiece of supernatural horror as a
college campus turns into a nest of evil.

Feburary’s Late Nite Grindhouse show was originally going to be Duke Mitchell’s Massacre Mafia Style. Unfortunately, there was a scheduling conflict with the only 35mm print of that film. Therefore, we have had to book another title. Massacre Mafia Style will show at a later date but I feel extremely lucky to bring you guys the restored version of Jess Franco’s Vampyros Lesbos. If that title sounds saucy, it’s because it is. Nudity, sex and blood will be shown on the big screen at the Hi-Pointe next weekend and you should join us!
Vampyros Lesbos
1971 / dir. Jess Franco / Digital
From Jess Franco, the filmmaker The Vatican called “the most dangerous director in the world”, comes the most celebrated movie of his legendary career: Stunning Soledad Miranda stars as a vixen vampire who lures women to a Mediterranean island to satisfy her insatiable lust for female flesh and blood.

All the leaves are nearly brown, skies sometimes gray, there's a slight chill in the air, and my ears and eyes have been quite busy. A touch of melancholia and a satchel full of dreams yet to be realized. Winter is just around the corner. A hint of summer still lingers in the late afternoon sun. Walks in the park with the dog, shared playlists on Spotify providing the soundtrack. I remain an ever faithful servant to smart culture's demands.
"Cicadas and Gulls" Feist Metals (Cherrytree) - Canadian singer/songwriter Leslie Feist displays her chops in full maturity on her third CD. So much to enjoy, yet I'm continually drawn to this evocative, simple double-tracked voice and acoustic guitar folk song. I suspect it fully captures my current mood.

Written and directed by Mario Caiano, The Faceless Monster (1965) is an Italian horror movie that was released in the United States with the original title Nightmare Castle. Upon its release to video it was given the different title. Although in my opinion, The Faceless Monster doesn’t fit the movie and is a bit misleading as to the subject matter.
The movie stars Barbara Steele in a dual role—as Muriel, the wife of scientist Stephen Arrowsmith (Paul Muller) and Jenny, Muriel’s step-sister. Muriel is having an affair with the handyman David (Rik Battaglia) and one night they are caught red-handed by Stephen. With the help of his loyal housekeeper Solange (Helga Line), Stephen kills Muriel and David, removing their hearts and using their blood for some experiments involving a youth serum.
Muriel was the one with the money and before her death...

Halloween may now be associated with the likes of Michael Myers and other hack-and-slash types, but for those of us of a certain age, at this time of year our thoughts return to the granddaddies of them all: Dr. Frankenstein and his Monster. In honor of that tradition, today Trembles takes a look back at the good doctor's daughter: Lady Frankenstein, directed by Mel Welles and Aureliano Luppi.
Synopsis:
When Dr. Frankenstein (Joseph Cotten) is killed by a monster he created, his daughter (Rosalba Neri) and his lab assistant, Marshall (Paul Muller), continue his experiments. The two fall in love and attempt to transplant Marshall's brain into the muscular body of a retarded servant, Stephen, in order to prolong the aging Marshall's life. Meanwhile, the first monster seeks revenge on the grave robbers who sold the body parts used in its creation to Dr. Frankenstein. Soon it comes...

In the annals of classic Italian Gothic horror, one name immediately does Not spring to mind, that of genre hopper Mario Caiano. Usually it’s Mario Bava or Antonio Margheriti who get the accolades and of course, there are very serious, legitimate reasons for this. But Caiano has one advantage over his early 1960’s, Mediterranean contemporaries: he directed the 1963 supernatural melodrama masterpiece Nightmare Castle, and they didn’t. It’s that simple.
Made in the wake of the international success of Bava’s immortal Black Sunday, Caiano and company stole that film’s iconic femme fatale, Barbara Steele and fashioned a shuddery, haunting and occasionally unbearably frightening high contrast black and white shocker that exploits Steele’s cruel beauty to even greater effect, placing her in a duel role and surrounding her in a nasty, elegant narrative.
So whey then, don’t the hardcore scholars of Eurohorror speak of Nightmare Castle...
