British radio and film comedian and dancer, the son of a tea broker. He was best known for his successful partnership with fellow entertainers Arthur Askey and Kenneth Horne. Served in the RAF during World War II.
Made his stage debut in the chorus of 'The Blue Train' which after a short tour went to The Prince of Wales Theatre in London's West End.
Children included daughters Belinda Murcoch and Jane Murdoch who were both on the stage.
Moved to Tunbridge Wells when about 1 year old.
With no training he started as a dancer.
Had the nickname Stinker. This is in relation to his public schoolboy days.
