Any nostalgic affection for Aussie star Paul Hogan and his iconic Crocodile Dundee character will likely be put to the test by this ill-conceived comedy starring the now octogenarian actor. Incorporating Curb Your Enthusiasm-style meta humor, with the actor playing a rather depressed version of himself, The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee makes one long for such comparatively stellar Hogan vehicles as Almost an Angel and Lightning Jack.

Lionsgate has revealed an official trailer for an amusing comedy titled The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee, bringing back everyone's favorite Australian animal lover Paul Hogan - better known as Crocodile Dundee! Paul Hogan plays himself in this raucous comedy. Hogan is reluctantly thrust back into the spotlight as he desperately attempts to restore his sullied reputation on the eve of being knighted in the comedy that also stars John Cleese, Chevy Chase, Olivia Newton-John, and also Jacob Elordi as Hogan's son. For the young folks who might not know, Hogan achieved worldwide fame starring in the Crocodile Dundee movies which first opened in 1986. There were two more sequels in total, but the last one was made in 2001 and we haven't seen him since. This looks like a fun, nostalgic look back at his glory days and a lovely final send off. Official US trailer (+ US poster) for Dean Murphy's The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee,...

‘The Invisible Man.’
In this unprecedented, fractured year for Australian cinemas, finally enough Aussie films have been released to compile the top 10 titles.
In the chart from the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia, the contrast between the pre-covid-19 releases and those that entered the market after cinemas re-opened, could not be starker.
Arguably the $15.03 million total would have been somewhat higher had Natalie Erika James’ Relic , Unjoo Moon’s I Am Woman and Dean Murphy’s The Very Excellent Mr Dundee not gone straight to Stan or Amazon Prime.
In addition, early digital releases including Ben Lawrence’s Hearts and Bones, Maziar Lahooti’s Below and Kriv Stenders’ Brock: Over the Top deprived audiences of the chance to see them in the optimum way.

Unjoo Moon’s debut feature I Am Woman will premiere on Stan as a Stan Original on August 28 – the latest in a growing list of Australian films to bypass cinemas as the pandemic continues to depress the theatrical market.
This follows the straight-to-streaming deals for Dean Murphy’s comedy The Very Excellent Mr Dundee,, Natalie Erika James’ Relic and digital releases Maziar Lahooti’s Below (July 8), Ben Lawrence’s Hearts and Bones (May 6) and Alexs Stadermann’s animated feature 100% Wolf.
Cinemagoers may well feel aggrieved about missing the opportunity to see these films in cinemas, although Hearts and Bones and 100% Wolf did play on a handful of screens, as did Kriv Stenders’ Brock: Over the Top.

‘The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee.’
The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee, one of the local films to have its cinema release impacted by the pandemic, will now premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in Australia and New Zealand on July 17.
The comedy, directed by Dean Murphy, explores a fictional version of Paul Hogan as he is thrust out of quiet retirement and back into the spotlight. When his granddaughter Lucy (Charlotte Stent) finds out he’s been offered a knighthood for services to comedy and tells all her friends, Paul reluctantly accepts the offer and has six weeks to stay out of trouble before the ceremony. But wherever Paul goes, trouble follows.
Starring alongside Hoges and Stent are John Cleese, Chevy Chase, Olivia Newton-John, Shane Jacobson, Julia Morris, Rachael Carpani, Jim Jefferies, Reggie VelJohnson and Wayne Knight. Murphy, who co-wrote the script with Robert Mond, also produced the film alongside Nigel Odell.

In his 63 years as a film programmer, Bob Parr had never experienced anything like the current crisis as ticket sales flatlined across the country over the past few weeks.
“All exhibitors and distributors are losing a lot of money,” the Wallis Cinemas consultant told If on Sunday. “Many cinemas have closed because there are no patrons.
“Many small exhibitors make their living in school holidays and barely break even except for blockbusters during the remaining time. They are in the business because they love it.”
Later that day the Prime Minister Scott Morrison announced all cinemas and entertainment venues, registered and licensed clubs, hotels, pubs, casinos and nightclubs will close today.
Exhibitors and distributors had been steeling themselves for that decision after cinemas were shuttered in the Us, the UK and myriad other markets.

(L-r) Daniel Lapaine, Jacqueline McKenzie, Nathan Page and director Tony Tilse on set in Victoria.
The relationship between Essie Davis’ Phryne Fisher and Nathan Page’s Jack Robinson breaks new ground in Miss Fisher and the Crypt of Tears.
That’s according to Tony Tilse, who directed Every Cloud Productions’ murder-mystery/adventure/romance, which premieres in Australian cinemas on February 27.
“The lovely tension between Phryne and Jack is always there but the two of them on screen together is just magic in a way we haven’t seen before,” Tilse tells If.
“Nathan is fantastic, absolutely up there with Essie’s performance level. It’s beautiful to watch.”
Tilse, who was the set-up director of Ms Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, was the natural choice by producer Fiona Eagger and scriptwriter/executive producer Deb Cox
to helm the feature.

Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Unjoo Moon at the Tiff premiere of ‘I Am Woman.’
In a sign of the times for independent distributors, Transmission Films expects to release approximately nine films in cinemas this year, down from 13 in 2019.
The more selective, cautious approach to acquisitions is Transmission’s response to the tightening market across-the-board for indie films, which co-founder Andrew Mackie estimates has dropped by 10-20 per cent.
That said, Mackie and co-founder Richard Payten are very confident about the 2020 slate, not least Unjoo Moon’s I Am Woman and Dean Murphy’s Paul Hogan comeback comedy The Very Excellent Mr Dundee.
Transmission has dated Moon’s Helen Reddy biopic starring Tilda Cobham-Hervey as the pioneering Australian feminist singer, which premiered at Toronto, on May 21.
Mackie says the release date for the film produced by Goalpost Pictures’ Rosemary Blight and scripted by Emma Jensen avoids the “post-Oscar season crush and allows...

‘Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan.’
The box office results for the Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas this year underline yet again the deep polarisation in the indie film market between the higher earners and the also-rans.
The top five titles – Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding, Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy, Anthony Marais’ Hotel Mumbai, Damon Gameau’s 2040 and Richard Lowenstein’s Mystify: Michael Hutchence – accounted for $15.8 million or 93 per cent of the Oz releases’ takings.
The Aussie films plus holdovers racked up nearly $17 million through the end of July, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia.
That’s a long way below the $40.6 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.6 million, Breath’s $4.4 million (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.

‘2040’.
Five months into the year, 18 Australian films and feature docs released in cinemas since the start of the year, plus holdovers, have racked up a modest $14.3 million.
That compares with $37.6 million generated in the same period last year, led by Peter Rabbit’s $26.4 million, Breath’s $3.6 million in four weeks (finishing with $4.6 million) and Sweet Country’s $2 million.
Shawn Seet’s Storm Boy is the top title with nearly $5 million, a creditable result. But almost certainly that would have been rather higher if Sony Pictures had been able to use Geoffrey Rush in the publicity campaign.
Wayne Blair’s Top End Wedding has grossed $4.7 million through Sunday, its sixth weekend, and could finish with $5.5 million.
Anthony Maras’ Hotel Mumbai collected $3.3 million, knee-capped by the dreadful co-incidence of opening on the same weekend as the Christchurch massacre.
Damon Gameau’s 2040 has earned $568,000 after its second weekend and, buoyed by word-of-mouth, distributor...

Ryan Corr and Rachael Taylor in ‘Ladies in Black.’
The good news for Australian cinema: Last year ranks as the third biggest ever for Oz films and feature docs released theatrically in the home market.
Another encouraging trend: Eight of the top 30 grossing titles were feature docs, led by Paul Damien Williams’ Gurrumul, Mark Joffe’s Jimmy Barnes: Working Class Boy, Ray Argall’s Midnight Oil 1984, Naina Sen’s The Song Keepers and Catherine Scott’s Backtrack Boys.
The not-so-good news: The top two films, Will Gluck’s Peter Rabbit and Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black accounted for nearly 70 per cent of total revenues, while 39 of the 61 new releases each made less than $100,000.
Collectively, local titles including holdovers racked up $57.4 million in 2018, trailing the 2001 total of $63.1 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (Mpdaa)

‘Ladies in Black.’
The Australian titles released in cinemas this year including holdovers will overtake the calendar 2017 total in the next week or so, boosted by Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black.
Through the end of September the Oz films and feature docs had grossed $47.8 million, according to the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia (Mpdaa), within spitting distance of last year’s $49.4 million.
After a second weekend drop of just 10 per cent Ladies in Black’s takings have increased by nearly $800,000 to $5.97 million, including $361,000 on Tuesday, so the 1950s-set comedy-drama distributed by Sony is on course to surpass $12 million.
Distributed by Universal Pictures as an alternate content release, Mark Joffe’s biopic Jimmy Barnes: Working Class Boy rang up $823,000, ranking as the year’s second biggest feature doc behind Paul Damian Williams’ Gurrumul, which made $984,000.

Paul Hogan, the star of the hit Crocodile Dundee films, is set to star in a new feature film comedy called The Very Excellent Mr. Dundee!. Now, before you get too excited, this isn't going to be a sequel to the classic 80s films, but it still sounds like it will be an entertaining movie!
According to Deadline, the film "sees Hogan playing himself and on the brink of receiving a Knighthood for services to comedy. ‘Don’t do anything to mess this up’, his manager tells him, according to the plot line. However, despite all his best efforts, the next six weeks sees his name and reputation destroyed."
I know a lot of fans were hoping to eventually see a sequel to Crocodile Dundee, especially after that fun Super Bowl spot, Dundee: The Son of a Legend Returns home. But, it looks like we're getting the next best thing!

Iconic Australian actor, Paul Hogan is to star in upcoming feature film “The Very Excellent Mr Dundee.” Production starts next month in Australia, Los Angeles and Vancouver.
Hogan recently thrilled and infuriated fans of the “Crocodile Dundee” film series in which he starred in the 1980s, by appearing in a short film that appeared to be a trailer for a new film in the franchise. But the clip turned out to be a advertisement for Tourism Australia.

Screen Australia.s multi-platform drama program has the scope to invest up to $500,000 in a low budget feature- yet not one feature producer has applied.
The fund, which has $4.2 million to invest this financial year, is willing to support feature-length projects from applicants who have a significant social media audience.
That.s defined as a channel with more than 100,000 subscribers or followers, or a video with more than 1 million views and at least 25,000 subscribers.

The animated feature Little Johnny The Movie will premiere as part of the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, screening from 1-24 April at Greater Union Russell Street.
“The overall sensibility of the Chuck Jones cartoons struck a chord immediately. We wanted to celebrate the golden era of animation but with a distinctly adult sense of humour. It’s kind of like the old studio cartoons featuring Bugs, Elmer and Daffy, but on steroids,” said director Ralph Moser.
The film – a mockumentary that traces the origins of Little Johnny jokes, looking at the day to day life of the boy and his dysfunctional family – features the voices of Kevin “Bloody” Wilson and Genevieve Morris. It was written by Moser, Dean Murphy and Stewart Faichney, and produced by Murphy, David Redman, Shana Levine and Andrew Davies.
Bookings can be made at www.eventcinemas.com/movie/little-johnny-the-movie...

It’s inspired by real events and received the 2006 Awgie for Best Original Feature Film and the AFI Award for Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor (Anthony Hayes) and Best Original Score (Mick Harvey).

Instinct Entertainment and Studio Moshi have announced production of an M-rated animated feature, based on the boy from the Little Johnny jokes.
“We anticipate an M rating. Think the more adult-orientated Merry Melodies cartoons from the Golden Era of Warner Bros. We’ll be using a combination of software along with a lot of hand-drawn traditional style animation. The style is deliberately retro,” producer David Redman told Encore.
Little Johnny the Movie will be directed by Ralph Moser and Dean Murphy, from a script they both co-wrote with Stewart Faichney. It will be a mockumentary about Little Johnny, who will be voiced by Genevieve Morris (Barbara, from the current Anz bank campaign).
The project “discovers that Little Johnny was indeed a real person, a feisty redhead boy, and we meet him and his simple yet hilariously dysfunctional family and friends and discover where these jokes originated from”.
