Well, we’re past the Summer blockbusters and heading right into the serious, somber cinema season, that time when the studios dream of top ten lists and Oscar gold. What better way to make those award fantasies come true than to hop in the movie “way-back” time machine and witness a most historic birth. But we’re not looking back on the birth of a person, rather the birth of a movement, a concentrated effort to effect change for a minority. Almost a year ago, we saw the civil rights movement take root in the acclaimed Selma. And in a few weeks, we’ll see the story of how the women’s equality movement began in Suffragette. So, now the movies offer up a look at a true flash point in the struggle of the Lgbt community for justice, specifically the 1969 riot at the NYC nightspot called Stonewall. So, what...

Usually found sending alien invasions, wretched weather or earthquakes against civilization on screen, Roland Emmerich does occasionally make room for passion projects, and Stonewall certainly counts. The first trailer for the drama has arrived online.Stonewall uses the fictional figure of Danny (Jeremy Irvine) to tell the very real story of the Stonewall Inn and the role it played in helping to kick off the battle for gay rights in 1960s New York. Danny is kicked out of his small town home by his parents, leaving behind younger sister Phoebe (Joey King). Homeless and penniless, he makes friends with a group of street kids who introduce him to the Stonewall Inn, a hangout for the local Lgbt community. There, Danny catches the eye of the suave Trevor (Jonathan Rhys Meyers) and also attracts interest from the joint’s manager, Ed Murphy (Ron Perlman).Ed’s a shady type who colludes with corrupt cops,...

Roland Emmerich may be best known for bringing ruin to major cities and famous monuments in film, but as a vocal campaigner for the Lgbtq community, there is perhaps no better director to helm upcoming real-life drama, Stonewall.
Charting the genesis of a gay rights movement that would go on to inspire a generation, Emmerich’s passion project centers around the 1969 riots and their ensuing police raid on the titular Inn at New York’s Greenwich Village. Toplined by War Horse‘s Jeremy Irvine, the Stonewall club became a dedicated safe haven for members of the Lgbtq community, who were constantly berated by the public and unjustly punished by the police force at the time. What followed was a series of explosive riots – riots and demonstrations that would go on to become a defining moment in America’s quest for equality.

Last week's MPAA bulletin had two titles and both were notable releases, this week has nine titles and only one of them really moves the dial... at all. That one being Stonewall, which I'm sure most people drooling over Roland Emmerich's current project, Independence Day: Resurgence, forgot all about. Well, if you're in that camp, let me remind you. Stonewall is a drama centered on the 1969 Stonewall Riots in New York, an event widely considered the starting point for the modern gay civil rights movement. The movie stars Jeremy Irvine, Caleb Landry Jones, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, Ron Perlman, Joey King and Karl Glusman. Here's the synopsis: Kicked out of his own home, young Danny Winters (Jeremy Irvine) flees to NY, leaving behind his beloved sister (Joey King). Homeless and destitute, he befriends a group of street kids who soon introduce him to the watering hole of the local drag queens,...

Roland Emmerich is best known for his effects-heavy disaster epics, from Independence Day to 2012, but the director will be working on a much smaller scale for his next film, the gay rights drama Stonewall. Today, ahead of the start of production, The Tudors star Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Sons of Anarchy actor Ron Perlman, in addition to Fargo actress Joey King, have come aboard.
The film, which is being toplined by War Horse‘s Jeremy Irvine, centers on the 1969 riots which followed a police raid on the Stonewall Inn in New York’s Greenwich Village. Emmerich will narrow the focus to tell the story of one man’s political awakening at the time of the riots, which would become a pivotal event in the gay rights movement in America.
Irvine plays Danny Winters, who abandons his family and younger sister (King) to head to New York after becoming aware of his sexuality.
