Large scale puppets, miniatures and various other all-practical effects will come together for Grylu Sker, an Icelandic ghost story from the creators of The Haunted Swordsman – along with Sjón, co-writer of Robert Eggers’ The Northman – that is now funding on Kickstarter.
The film will even feature a stop motion animation sequence supervised by Oscar-winner Phil Tippett (Mad God), so it’s no surprise that the Kickstarter fund has been a smashing success so far. Running until August 11, over $90,000 of the total $120,000 goal has already been raised!
Billed as a gothic adventure, Grylu Sker is the tale of a lost explorer set in a world of Icelandic folklore written by Tab Murphy and Icelandic author Sjón (co-writer of The Northman). It is a story of an explorer’s fight for survival on a bleak unforgiving island and also a re-imagining of the legendary Icelandic witch Gryla.

Finnish director Anders Engström, whose TV credits include Taboo, Hanna and See, is aboard to direct producer Joel B. Michaels’ (Terminator Salvation) update of 1980 supernatural thriller The Changeling.
The film follows a musician who, after the death of his young daughter, returns to his childhood home. After a series of terrifying events, he begins to unlock the mystery of the dead child that haunts his home along with a terrible family secret. Tab Murphy’s script is said to introduce “several new twists and turns”.
Cornerstone Films, which first picked the title up in 2018, will be shopping the project at the upcoming Cannes virtual market. Uwe Schott and Stefan Arndt of X-Filme (Babylon Berlin) are also producing with Cornerstone’s Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder serving as executive producers.
The plan is to shoot the remake in Ireland. Michaels was the original producer of the 1980 film starring George C. Scott.

Barça Studios and Sony Music Latin Iberia are teaming to produce “Talent Explorers,” an animated series which marks the third title from Barça Studios, the burgeoning film-tv content arm of F.C. Barcelona, one of the world’s biggest soccer clubs.
The series – which sees Max, a 15 year-old boy, Roc, big bear with a heart of gold, and Lynds, a tech-savvy pink kitten, travel the world, scouting for the next generation of soccer stars, – marks the third title at Barça Studios, after first team player doc series “Matchday,” just released by Netflix in Latin America.
A second title, “La Masia,” represents Barça Studios’ first scripted series, set at the soccer club’s youth academy, and written by Albert Espinosa, creator of the Filmax-produced “The Red Band Society,” one of the most re-versioned Spanish series in its TV History, including a U.S. makeover adapted for Fox by Steven Spielberg...

A slew of classic Disney movies are hitting for the first time on Blu-Ray, including one double-pack release, and you’re going to want to make sure to pick these up. You haven’t paid attention to some of these titles for a while, and it’s about time you got the chance to catch them on Blu-Ray. The best part is that there’s a great mix of releases hitting. Bedknobs and Broomsticks is all but lost in the cultural consciousness, and it deserves a return. The Academy Award-winning movie from the year I was born is filled with a lot of fun and adventure, and like most Disney films, holds up well for a whole new generation.
The rest of the group covers a great spectrum, including two animated “big” titles, and a 10th Anniversary release. There’s a lot to expose your family to here, so check out all the info below,...

Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Written by Tab Murphy
Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise
Us, 2001
One of the biggest complaints of animated films in North America is that they are undoubtedly targeted solely at children. While Disney and Pixar may occasionally slip adult jokes in to their films, the films are still marketed to children. On weekends when animated films open, it is assumed that they will be successful because they are targeted at kids going with their families. This is why many flock to the films of Studio Ghibli as examples of animated films for adults. However, shortly after the end of the Disney Renaissance (the films between The Little Mermaid and Tarzan), Disney released their most mature film since The Black Cauldron: Atlantis: The Lost Empire.
The film opens with a quote from Plato about the fall of the continent of Atlantis followed by a cataclysmic scene of its destruction.

Way back in July I had the opportunity to sit down with Tim Bradstreet and discuss several of the past, present and future projects that were happening at Raw Studios. One of the projects which we discussed in depth was the graphic novel for Dark Country. They had just released it in time for the San Diego Comic-Con and I was one of the first to get my grubby little hands on it! Dark Country may sound familiar to some, especially fans of Thomas Jane, as he acted and directed a film of the same name that was released back in 2009. What you may not know is that Thomas Jane's Dark Country film was inspired by the short story written by Tab Murphy. Thomas Ott's graphic storytelling in Dead End and Greetings from Hellville were also hugely inspirational when it came to directing Dark Country. The fact that...

The Dark Country movie was released a few years back and was directed by Thomas Jane, who also starred in the movie, along with Lauren German and Ron Perlman. A graphic novel was released earlier this year, featuring art from Thomas Ott, and we’ve been given a preview to share with our readers.
“At the end of the road… the nightmare truly begins. In 2007, actor/filmmaker Thomas Jane went off to New Mexico to film his noir/suspense film, Dark Country, a twisted, psycho-noir about a couple forced to deal with a dead body en route from Vegas. The result was a mind bending, idiosyncratic, EC Comic-style ride into the noirish landscape of damnation. In an effort to create a new experience, Jane had the artist adapt the original short story by Tab Murphy that inspired the film. Thomas Ott’s adaptation is presented in his signature ‘silent’ format,...

I recently spoke with actor, director and comic book publisher Thomas Jane and his Raw Studios partner, artist Tim Bradstreet, about their new graphic novel Dark Country (pictured above); illustrated by the ferociously talented Swiss scratchboard artist Thomas Ott and based on the Tab Murphy short story that Jane also adapted into his 2009 feature film directorial debut. I'll have that interview ready for you to read on FEARnet next week, but in the meantime I want to share with you Jane and Bradstreet's picks for the top 5 horror artists of all time. Most of whom are, unsurprisingly, horror comic artists. Check out their selections after the jump. Here's what Raw Studios' Thomas Jane and Tim Bradstreet had to...

Thomas Jane fans will be familiar with Dark Country, the title of his 2009 directorial debut, a twisted, psycho-noir about a couple forced to deal with a dead body en route from Vegas. Both the film and graphic novel are based on a short story written by Tab Murphy; Jane conceived of the film and graphic novel adaptions as stand-alone endeavors with unique artistic interpretations.

In addition to starring in genre stories (The Mist and The Punisher) and directing them (like his "psycho noir" Dark Country), Renaissance man Thomas Jane, as most comic-book lovers know, also publishes them. Jane and artist Tim Bradstreet's Raw Studios has presented the work of horror titans like Steve Niles and Bernie Wrightson in titles like Bad Planet and Alien Pig Farmer 3000. The Film
Adapted from the 1987 comic book story arc by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, Batman: Year One, the latest film by Warner Bros. and DC Animation, recounts the early days of two iconic DC characters, Batman and Commissioner Gordon. In the film, a young Bruce Wayne returns home to Gotham City after spending twelve years studying aboard. He spends his first few nights scouting the activities of Gotham’s underbelly, and after a couple of trial and error exploits, dawns the cape and cowl and takes up the identity of “The Batman,” a vigilante crime fighter that strikes terror in the hearts of criminals and the corrupt. Meanwhile, James Gordon, a police officer from Chicago, moves to Gotham with his pregnant wife, Barbara, and experiences multiple conflicts within the crime ridden city, including being assaulted by his partner, Detective Flass, becoming a target for Commissioner Gillian Loeb, engaging in...

A third clip from the animated film Batman: Year One has arrived online. I saw this at Comic-Con and was not initially blown away. It might have been because the screening was a later screening after a long day. The more I watch of these clips, the more I like it. I am still not in love with the film, but it is decent.
Batman: Year One is based on the landmark 1987 DC Comics titles from 12-time Eisner Award winner Frank Miller and illustrator David Mazzucchelli. The film depicts young Bruce Wayne’s return to Gotham City in his first attempts to fight injustice as a costumed vigilante. Thanks to ComingSoon, we have the first clip from Batman: Year One, a direct-to-dvd/Blu-ray animated movie from Warner Home Video that brings Frank Miller’s graphic novel to life. The animated movie stars Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse), Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) and voiceover newcomer Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.) as Batman/Bruce Wayne.

Warner Bros. Premier has released the first film clip from the upcoming animated film adaptation of Frank Miller's Batman: Year One. I saw the movie over at San Diego Comic-Con this year and was actually pretty disappointed. The animation was decent but the voice acting and direction sucked, which is a shame because it has such a great cast of actors such as Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Ben McKenzie (Southland, The O.C.), Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse, Buffy the Vampire Slayer) and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica). Everything is very monotone, you will get a taste of it in the film clip below. Check it out and tell us what you think!

Warner Home Video has released the full Blu-ray and DVD specs for their upcoming animated film Batman: Year One, which is set to come out on October 18th. This movie actually looks like it's going to be pretty awesome. I'm excited for it, and I don't really get excited about DC Entertainment animated films. Marvel stopped making their animated movies, so DC is all we got right now.

Had history taken a different turn, Darren Aronofsky would have made Batman: Year One instead of Christopher Nolan making Batman Begins. Finally, though, the project had been made…
Batman: Year One was threatening to be a permanent member of the pile of lost superhero movies. Developed for a while by Darren Aronofsky, before Warner Bros gave the guardianship of Gotham City to Christopher Nolan, the movie of Year One seemed lost forever.
That was until it was announced that it was getting the animated treatment, under the watchful eye of Bruce Timm, serving as executive producer. Then there's Sam Liu and Lauren Montgomery directing, and Tab Murphy on screenplay duties.
Batman: Year One will be arriving on DVD this autumn, and is set to get its premiere at the upcoming Comic-Con in San Diego. And the first trailer for it has appeared at MTV. You can see it right here.

Around ten years ago, long before Christopher Nolan got the idea to reboot the Batman franchise with an origins story, indie filmmaker Darren Aronofsky pitched an adaptation of Frank Miller’s groundbreaking and seminal Dark Knight story Batman: Year One to Warner Bros.
The script from Miller/Aronofsky is readily available online and having read it, was a pretty out there adaptation, a lot more violent, gritty, dark and less mainstream than the eventual Nolan franchise but it was a significant moment in the history of the character on film as it paved the way in the mindset of the studio that the character could be rebooted after the disastrous Joel Schmuacher run.
Ten years later and the Batman franchise is the hottest ticket in town. With The Dark Knight Rises currently deep into production, the character is once again at the top of pop culture.

The animated film will be rated PG-13 and is due out on October 18 on Blu-ray, DVD, On Demand and for digital download but will make it's world premiere at the San Diego Comic-Con in July. The voice cast has been revealed for the animated version of Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One, which premieres in July at the 2011 San Diego Comic-Con. Heat Vision reports that Ben McKenzie (The O.C.) will provide the voice of Bruce Wayne/Batman, with Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston portraying Lt. James Gordon. Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) is voicing Detective Sarah Essen, and Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse) will voice Selina Kyle/Catwoman, and Alex Rocco (Moe Greene from The Godfather) will be the voice of Carmine Falcone.
Tab Murphy (Superman/Batman:Apocalypse) adapted the script, and Sam Liu and Lauren Montgomery (Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths) are directing. Miller’s original novel lends itself nicely to a film adaptation, and large hunks of the story were used in Christopher Nolan’s Batman Begins. Executive producer Bruce Timm points out:
“The source material is surprisingly cinematic; it’s a pretty straight forward literal retelling.

An animated movie of Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One will be arriving on DVD before the end of the year. And the voice cast has now been announced, too…
If you cast your minds back to the pre-Christopher Nolan era of Batman, then you might recall that Darren Aronofsky was once heavily linked with rebooting the Batman franchise. He worked on developing the story of Batman: Year One for the big screen, before Warner Bros eventually went with Nolan and pressed on with Batman Begins.
But it can't just be us that held out a little bit of hope that Aronofsky might have been tempted to look again at Year One once Nolan has completed his Batman trilogy with The Dark Knight Rises.
But that's clearly not going to happen. The reason? Well, aside from Aronofsky being unlikely to get the call from Warner Bros, the Batman: Year One...

Holy Batman, Batman! That's a lot of Batman!
Only a few days ago, we reported that DC Animation was quietly developing an adaptation of Frank Miller's legendary series The Dark Knight Returns which would follow on the tail of another detail-scarce, in development Miller project, Batman: Year One.
Today, The Hollywood Reporter opened the can of worms on the latter project. According to THR, Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Ben McKenzie (Southland), Eliza Dushku (Dollhouse)and Katee Sackhoff (Battlestar Galactica) are among the actors lending their voices to the characters in the film. Lauren Montgomery, director of the kick-ass Wonder Woman, is at the helm of Tab Murphy's (Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) script.
Year One was a highly influential book written by Miller and drawn by David Mazzucchelli, that tells of the early days of Bruce Wayne/Batman, rooting the existing mythology in a real world context, not unlike Christopher Nolan's Batman franchise.

Back when I was a wee lad, Batman: The Animated Series meant everything to me (heck, even Superman's companion show worked it's magic on me day in and day out). I wasn't a big comic fan -- that is, until masterminds Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and casting director Andrea Romano opened the flood gates to much of the nerd ass shit I know and love today. Since Batman: Tas debuted in 1992, DC Animated has spun off an epic Justice League series, eclectic Batman incarnations and, in the last five years, some fantastic animated films.

Chicago – Superman and Batman return to follow-up on the success of September 2009’s “Superman/Batman: Public Enemies,” one of the most popular DC Universe Animated Movies, with this year’s “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse.” Where does the ninth film in the franchise fall compared to other DC Universe flicks and does it say anything about the future of this hit-and-miss series of releases?
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.0/5.0
In the middle and I hope not. “Superman/Batman: Apocalypse” features a fantastic voice cast but the script is a bit subpar, resulting in a story that doesn’t hook the viewer in quite the same way as the best of the DC Universe films, including this past summer’s “Batman: Under the Red Hood.” For hardcore fans of the three central characters or the actors behind the animation, “Apocalypse” delivers but it’s a modest slice of entertainment that doesn’t quite...

Superman/Batman: Apocalypse is the ninth direct to DVD film from DC Universe Animated Original Movies, and it mostly continues the company's streak of producing solid, entertaining and surprisingly mature animated superhero fare. Once again, the team behind the film creates the kind of superhero movie we'll never be able to see in the theaters, and through generally strong writing, excellent animation, and brilliant action setpieces, it should satisfy most viewers, be they canonical fans or otherwise.
The story takes place immediately after one of DC's prior releases, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. Lex Luthor, who previously wrangled his way to becoming President of the United States, has been impeached and all seems on its way to returning to normal -- at least as normal as things get in the DC universe. Summer Glau knows her audience.
Whether as River Tam in Joss Whedon’s cult classic series and follow-up film, Firefly and Serenity, or as the indestructible android-from-the-future Cameron in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Glau has cornered the market on playing attractive, demure young females with the controlled homicidal power to destroy an opposing legion of trained warriors.
So it was only natural that as her first-ever animated voiceover role, Glau would fit neatly into the role of an uber-powered Kryptonian who falls under the spell of one of Superman’s greatest foes. Glau finds the perfect mix of youthful curiosity, teen angst and alien-turned-Earth-girl aggression as the voice of Kara, cousin of Superman (and ultimately destined to become Supergirl) in Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the ninth entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies out this week from Warner Home Video.

While the various animated series featuring the DC Universe heroes have had a loose connectivity, the feature films from Warner Premiere have been fiercely independent with variations in look, vocal cast and attitude. That is, until now. In Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, out today from Warner Home Entertainment, we have the first animated feature to immediately pick up on the events of a previous offering, in this case Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. Of course, it makes sense since they both are drawn from the Superman/Batman ongoing series and comprise the title’s first two story arcs.
The arc, from Jeph Loeb and the late Michael Turner, introduced Supergirl to New Earth. In Public Enemies, President Luthor tried to blame a large kryptonite asteroid en route to Earth on Superman. After the World’s Finest team destroyed the threat and exposed Luthor’s criminal activity, all seemed safe. As the new feature opens,...

"Superman/Batman: Apocalypse" arrived on shelves today, marking the superhero duo's return to DC's universe of animated features after last year's popular "Superman/Batman: Public Enemies."
Based on the next story arc in the "Superman/Batman" comics, "Apocalypse" kicks off just a short time after the conclusion of "Public Enemies" and the destruction of the massive kryptonite meteor in the latter story's finale. Originally written by Jeph Loeb and illustrated by Michael Turner, the story was adapted by Tab Murphy ("Gorillas in the Mist") with Bruce Timm producing and Lauren Montgomery ("Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths") directing.
In "Superman/Batman: Apocalypse," audiences are introduced to a brand new Supergirl, Kara Zor-El (voiced by "Firefly" actress Summer Glau), as well as the evil ruler of Apokolips, Darkseid. While Superman and Batman decide how to handle the sudden and mysterious arrival of a new Kryptonian on Earth, they...

That loud sound you hear in the distance is the echo of fanboys cheering the return of Kevin Conroy to his benchmark role as the voice of the Dark Knight for the highly-anticipated Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the ninth entry in the popular, ongoing series of DC Universe Animated Original PG-13 Movies coming September 28, 2010 from Warner Premiere, DC Entertainment, Warner Bros. Animation and Warner Home Video.
