In 1982, "Cheers" premiered and started one of the great runs in TV history, staying on-air for 11 seasons and 275 episodes — not bad for a show that almost crashed and burned in its first season. Of course, I, being born in 1988, missed most of that run. But I've always been aware of the series' massive influence and lasting legacy as one of the finest sitcoms ever made. "Cheers" maintains that standing 30 years after the final episode aired.
Aired on May 20, 1993, "One for the Road" quickly became the second-highest-rated series finale of all time, just losing out to CBS's "M*A*S*H" series finale. But it wasn't just the people watching from home that made the end of "Cheers" so momentous. As Upi reported at the time, "Thousands gathered at bars and parties across the nation to watch." In other words, the 90-minute finale episode was somewhat of a national moment.

"The West Wing" is widely considered to be one of the best shows of all time. Aaron Sorkin's political drama follows the Bartlet Administration through two terms in the White House. For seven seasons we watched Josiah Bartlet (Martin Sheen), his family, and advisors or assistants — that began to feel like our own family — navigated a constantly shifting political landscape. Premiering in 1999, "The West Wing" fell at the beginning of what we now call the Golden Age of Television and arguably led to high-profile shows like "24," "House of Cards," "Veep," and "The Crown."
"The West Wing" racked up an impressive 26 Primetime Emmy wins and 95 nominations, despite steep competition from chief rival "The Sopranos." With former politicians like Dee Dee Myers and Elie Attie serving as contributors and writers, the show boasted an impressive level of authenticity. Though some have blamed its overly optimistic portrayal of politics for setting...

California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s promise to sign a bill that would extend the state’s 330 million-a-year film and television production tax credit program until 2030 is receiving high praise from the Entertainment Union Coalition, whose members include SAG-AFTRA, the DGA, the California IATSE Council, Teamsters Local 399 and Laborers International Union of North America Local 724.
The bill – Sb 485, authored by state Sen. Anthony Portantino – would extend the annual 330 million in tax incentives to qualified film and TV productions, which is set to expire in 2025.
“Today Governor Newsom gave the 163,000 women and men we represent who work in the California film and television industry a lifeline,” the Euc said in a statement. “With the announcement that he will sign Sb 485 into law, extending the California Film & Television Tax Credit Program to 2030, Governor Newsom has assured a future where our members can continue to work at jobs they love, in the state they call home,...

The Motion Picture Association commissioned a report, unveiled on Friday, that calls for a vast expansion of the California film and television tax credit.
The report contends that the credit generates billions of dollars in economic benefits for the state and produces a positive return in state and local tax revenue. The report advocates expanding the state credits for film and TV production and for the construction of soundstages, as well as creating a new credit for visual effects work.
The report also argues for making the existing credits refundable or transferrable, which would allow studios to benefit even if they do not have tax liability in the state.
The MPA represents six studios — Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros., Sony, Universal and Paramount — and has led the charge in pushing for increases in state tax credits across the country over the last two decades. The organization funded the report, which was...

(Updated with revised budget information) Flying high on a vaccinated California opening up and ramping up economically, Gavin Newsom today gave the Golden State’s efforts to attract more Hollywood business a shot in the arm.
A $30 million dollar shot in the Film and TV tax credit arm to be exact.
Handing out billions in proposed infrastructure and self-proclaimed “comeback” funding on Friday, the recall-facing Governor also fired a shot across the bow at the production rich Peach State and its widely decried new restrictions on voting rights.
“This is an opportunity for those productions, TV and others, in places like Georgia, whose values don’t necessarily align with the productions crews to consider coming back to the state of California,” first term Democrat Newsom said in a wide-ranging address today. “And that’s what that $30 million intends to do,” the Governor added of the one-time cash jolt.

Disneyland, Universal Studios and other theme parks in California — as well as sports stadiums — have gotten the green light to potentially reopen their gates once again after a long shutdown prompted by the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the California Department of Public Health, ballparks, stadiums and theme parks can open outdoors starting April 1 with “significantly reduced capacity, mandatory masking and other public health precautions,” should certain conditions be met.
“With case rates and hospitalizations significantly lower, the arrival of three highly effective vaccines and targeted efforts aimed at vaccinating the most vulnerable communities, California can begin gradually and safely bringing back more activities, especially those that occur outdoors and where consistent masking is possible,” said Dr. Mark Ghaly, secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency, in a statement. “Even with these changes, California retains some of the most robust public health protocols in the country.”

California health officials announced on Friday that the state will allow reopening of outdoor stadiums, ball parks and theme parks beginning April 1st.
The Department of Health says events and venues are for California residents only. Masks will be mandatory.
Live performances/sports with fans can begin in all tiers of the state’s Blueprint for a Safer Economy. Theme parks open in Red tier, which for Los Angeles, could be as soon as March 29. Numbers in L.A. County are expected to reach the red tier threshold next Tuesday. They then just need to stay there for three consecutive weeks to qualify LA parks for reopening.
When the counties reach the red tier, theme parks can open at 15% of overall capacity. When they advance to the orange tier, capacity will be increased to 25%. In the least-restrictive yellow tier, a capacity of 35% will be allowed.

A Zoom press conference Tuesday featuring California Film Commission director Colleen Bell and Dee Dee Myers, the state’s newly appointed director of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development, was disrupted by a Zoom-bomber who spewed racist and sexist profanities, accompanied by fits of loud screaming, before finally slinking off to bother someone else.
“I have never had this happen,” Bell said apologetically. “I’ve been on a couple of hundred Zoom calls, and that’s the first time I’ve been hacked.”
Myers agreed. “This was my first Zoom hack as well,” she said after the hacker left following a few minutes of inane blather, loud music and random cartoon imagery.
When the conference resumed, Bell returned to her pitch for the importance of the state’s annual $330 million tax incentives program administered by the commission, which is a state program within the governor’s Go-Biz office.

Myers, 59, joined Newsom’s team in May as a volunteer as the Covid-19 crisis was escalating. Newsom said that she will work on the economic recovery in the state.

Myers served as executive vice president of worldwide corporate communications and public affairs for Warner Bros. from 2014 to earlier this year. She served as White House press secretary during Bill Clinton’s first term, and was the first woman to hold that position.

More than 3,500 students in the Los Angeles Unified School District participated in the second year of Warner Bros.’ storytelling educational initiatives WB Story Lab and WB First Cut during the 2018-19 school year. The studio plans to continue both programs for a third year in partnership with nonprofit orgs Young Storytellers and Ghetto Film School.
Warner Bros. noted that the just-concluded second year of the programs saw double the number of participants at middle schools and high schools in the Lausd, which is the nation’s second-largest public school district (behind New York City) with more than 600,000 students and more than 1,000 schools.
Administered through WB Good, the studio’s social impact platform, the programs offer classes for students that are designed to cultivate storytelling skills and access to the entertainment industry.
“One of the pillars of our WB Good platform is to give young people the tools and space to be storytellers.

Fox has named former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks as its chief communications officer, in a move that underscores its closeness with the Trump Administration. Hicks will lead communications for “New” Fox, a media company whose assets include Fox broadcasting and Fox News, following the pending sale of 21st Century Fox to the Walt Disney Co.
The former model joined Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and was considered one of his most trusted advisors, with broad access to the Oval Office. She resigned from the administration in February, after she admitted to telling white lies in her testimony before the House Intelligence Committee.
As Hicks resigned, expressing gratitude to Trump, he heaped praise on her, saying she was “as smart and thoughtful as they come, a truly great person. I will miss having her by my side.”

According to several who heard the pitch, today’s town hall meeting at Warner Bros gave a hopeful glimpse of the synergy between Warner Bros and At&T and it was not lost on everybody there how different this was from when Disney explained how it would integrate pieces of Fox. WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey started by giving staff the answer they most needed to hear.
Basically, he said that At&T does nothing that Warner Bros does, so why would they have consummated this acquisition if the purpose was to get rid of you? That made today’s meeting far different than when Disney acquired Fox (the first time), and it became clear that there would be plenty of blood on the floor in duplicative departments where people are essentially doing the same jobs. Today’s meeting — moderated by Dee Dee Myers and where Stankey and Warner Bros chief Kevin Tsujihara...

WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey took his keep calm and carry on message to the Warner Bros studio lot this morning, in the latest stop in a weeklong series of town hall meetings.
Stankey was joined onstage by Warner Bros studio head Kevin Tsujihara and communications chief Dee Dee Myers, with the new WarnerMedia logo providing a backdrop.
The studio kicked off the session with a sizzle reel narrated by The Big Bang Theory’s Kunal Nayyar showcasing movie, television, animation and consumer products. Titled Content Connects People, the video contained highlights of such upcoming films of A Star Is Born, with Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, and Crazy Rich Asians starring Constance Wu and Michelle Yeoh, the hit CBS series Young Sheldon, syndicated The Ellen DeGeneres Show and shows from producer Greg Berlanti.
It ended with a kicker, declaring: the future looks epic.

John Stankey, the man tasked with integrating WarnerMedia into the At&T family, tried to sell employees at the company’s film and television studio on the virtues of being part of a global telecommunications giant. He promised to enhance cellular service on Warner Bros.’s studio lot during an hour-long presentation to staffers on Wednesday, receiving sustained applause from a group of Valley-toilers who have long been frustrated by dropped calls and dodgy signals.
The meeting is one of a series of sit-downs that Stankey, the newly minted WarnerMedia CEO, is doing this week in the wake of At&T’s $85 billion purchase of Time Warner. The company has been rechristened WarnerMedia, but so far At&T has taken pains to stress that it wants its new employees to continue making movies, shows, and other entertainment products despite having new corporate parents.

It’s been 20 years since “Sex and the City” premiered on HBO, and several of the writers are telling some behind-the-scenes stories to commemorate the comedy that would define a generation.

Warner Bros. claimed a production tax credit in Georgia on more than $600,000 worth of airplane equipment that was never used in the state, a Variety investigation has found.
The studio submitted the expenses in connection with “Sully,” the 2016 film directed by Clint Eastwood that was shot at locations including Georgia and California. Georgia offers a 30% tax credit for film production costs, provided they are incurred in the state.
Contracts and emails obtained by Variety show that the items billed to the Georgia film incentive program matched expenses that were actually incurred in California. As part of the effort to shift expenses to Georgia, the production went so far as to truck a small piece of airplane fuselage to a studio in Atlanta. The cost of the item matched the cost of a mothballed Airbus A320 that was used in California. The fuselage piece was not used in the film, but...

Political analyst, former White House Press Secretary and author Dee Dee Myers ("Why Woman Should Rule the World") is Warner Bros.' new head of corporate communications. Myers, who was press secretary (the first woman and one of the youngest ever) during the first two years of the Clinton administration (1993 to 1994), is now a political media pundit on politics, contributor at Vanity Fair (where her husband is national editor) and lecture circuit star, will relocate to La from Washington DC. In September, she will succeed Susan Fleishman, who is leaving the studio after a tumultuous nine years which saw Kevin Tsujihara ascend to studio head over departing rivals Bruce Rosenblum (TV) and Jeff Robinov (Motion Pictures), who left behind some strong projects for the studio, including Oscar-winner "Gravity" and "The Lego Movie." Updated With Comments From Myers And Fleishman: Warner Bros has hired former White House Press Secretary and longtime political strategist/analyst Dee Dee Myers as Evp Worldwide Corporate Communications and Public Affairs replacing nine-year veteran Sue Fleishman. The move comes after Fleishman had to negotiate through a very rocky transition at the studio through several shakeups in 2013. That included the ascension of new Warner Bros Entertainment CEO Kevin Tsujihara and the exits of the other two WB biggies angling for that gig — Warner Bros TV boss Bruce Rosenblum last May and Warner Brothers Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov the next month. Myers is coming into a studio rocked by these exits. And although Warner Bros is still reaping the benefits of the pictures greenlit by Robinov — Gravity, The Lego Movie, 300: Rise Of An Empire, and others — it is being led by a studio chairman who has been in the...
