What does it mean to die “peacefully”? Is it possible to find grace and joy in something so solemn? That death has the power to grant forgiveness and empathy is the core tenet of Emmannuelle Bercot’s weepy cancer drama “Peaceful,” which explores a year in the life of a young man facing a terminal diagnosis.
Benoît Magimel (“The Piano Teacher”) stars as Benjamin, a 39-year-old acting teacher and self-described failure who, after some months of back pain, learns that he has Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. It’s a brutal diagnosis not only for him, but also for his mother Crystal (Catherine Deneuve) who likes to believe she’s able to control the heartache and the happiness of her son’s life.
Regardless of how the two choose to “fight” the illness, it will be terminal for Benjamin no matter what. He will die of the disease. How he chooses to spend that final year,...

The American French Film Festival, formerly known as Colcoa, will kick off Oct. 10 with the North American premiere of docudrama “Notre-Dame on Fire,” from “Quest for Fire” director Jean-Jacques Annaud. The weeklong festival at the DGA Theater Complex in Los Angeles closes with Dominik Moll’s thriller “The Night of the 12th,” about a cold case where the only certainty is the night it occurred. Moll will also be the focus of the festival’s annual “Focus on a Filmmaker.”
“Every year, The American French Film Festival presents the very best of French cinema and television, and this year is no exception. I am personally excited about the opening night selection of Jean-Jacques Annaud’s ‘Notre-Dame on Fire’ as I think it perfectly embodies the Franco-American Cultural Fund’s mission,” said Andrea Berloff, writer and board member of the Franco-American Cultural Fund.

The Illegal movie review
Of people, places, dreams, reality and spaces, Danish Renzu’s 'The Illegal' deals with these vicious cycles of an American dream of an Indian with heart and leaves behind some fodder for thought.
Running on the familiar plot line of an Indian immigrant struggling to pursue the great American dream – somewhat similar in theme with Mira Nair’s 2006 'Namesake' starring Irrfan Khan and Tabu.
Danish Renzu’s 'The Illegal' works because it’s weaved with a heart that bleeds with earnestness, need and melancholy.
