First-look images already were released with a selection that can be found below.
Outer Range follows rancher Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin) who is fighting for his land and family after discovering an unfathomable phenomenon at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness — a dark void. The mystery surrounding the void on the west pasture of the ranch deepens in Season 2, as Royal and his wife Cecelia (Lili Taylor) struggle to keep their family together in the aftermath of their granddaughter’s disappearance. The stakes are higher for the Abbotts, who now face threats on multiple fronts.
In addition to Brolin and Taylor, Imogen Poots, Tamara Podemski, Lewis Pullman, Tom Pelphrey, Noah Reid, Shaun Sipos, Isabel Arraiza, Olive Abercrombie and Will Patton also star. As Deadline revealed in April,...

While the writers are back at developing projects, film and TV productions have not yet returned in full swing with the actors’ union, SAG-AFTRA, still on strike. There are a few projects that have been given the go-ahead to start principle photography during this time with a waiver from SAG-AFTRA. This includes a Kevin Smith film titled The 4:30 Movie, as well as some projects from M. Night Shyamalan’s daughter, Ishana, Sam Raimi and Mel Gibson. According to Deadline, a western starring Ron Pearlman and Esai Morales titled, Cottonmouth, has also started production in Oklahoma with a waiver.

For decades, American Indigenous and Native communities were represented by two prominent characters in mainstream studio animation: Pocahontas and Tiger Lily. With Spirit Rangers, creator Karissa Valencia is changing that.
“We wanted to redo a lot of that in terms of source material,” the Chumash and Mexican creator tells The Hollywood Reporter of the inspirations for historical representations of Indigenous peoples in animation. “We were doing our homework, our research. We were not just basing it off of what we did a Google search on.”
From Netflix Animation, Laughing Wild and SuperProd Animation, the series follows Kodi, Summer and Eddy Skycedar, three siblings whose blended Chumash and Cowlitz family work as rangers in the fictional Xus National Park in California. While the adults monitor the park during the day, the siblings solve various problems by activating beaded necklaces that portal them to the magical dimension of Spirit Park. Once there,...

There's almost always a market for gritty westerns, but there's been a bounty of well-made, pitch-black tales of the American west lately. Joining the ranks of shows like "1883" and films like the Academy Award-winning "Power of the Dog" is "The English," a new Prime Video and BBC limited series from writer and director Hugo Blick about romance and revenge on the lawless prairie.
Emily Blunt stars as Lady Cornelia Locke, an Englishwoman of some means who arrives in Kansas looking for vengeance when the violent chaos of the plains throws a massive wrench in her plans. Her fate seems to be intertwined with a Pawnee ex-calvary scout named Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), who is on his own journey of bloody revenge and redemption. There's more going on — a whole lot more — but the primary drive of the story is Cornelia and Eli's fiery chemistry and their shared goals.

What right does the BBC have, making a lavish six-part western? The BBC – which is all about stuffy, bonneted period dramas and documentaries where a nonagenarian cavorts with chimpanzees – tackling the quintessence of American culture? And, to add to the impertinence, calling it The English? Well, that’s the situation we arrive at with Hugo Blick’s BBC Two drama (co-produced with Amazon), which arrives on our screen with a thunder of hooves.
Emily Blunt is Cornelia Locke, an Englishwoman whose father owns “half of Devon”. She’s journeying through the heart of America on an unarticulated voyage of revenge. It’s there that she encounters Eli Whipp (Chaske Spencer), trussed up and beaten to a pulp. A Pawnee-born ex-us army officer, Whipp wants to claim a slide of American land, as is his veteran’s right. “Smoke dreams for the fireside,” dismisses a fellow soldier. Fate throws Eli and Cornelia together,...

In the final days of 2014, my wife and I both came down with a nasty case of the flu. Unable to do much but alternately shiver and sweat in bed together, we attempted to distract ourselves with a miniseries I had heard good things about earlier in the year: The Honourable Woman. Written and directed by Hugo Blick, the thriller starred Maggie Gyllenhaal as an Anglo-Jewish businesswoman caught up in a web of intrigue that involved, among other things, a kidnapping, Israeli intelligence officers, and, I think, fiber optic cables?...

A prodigal returns in Montana Story but this drama is one that skips the more familiar approach to explore a more interesting road less traveled. Long estranged siblings reunite against the dramatic backdrop of the windswept Montana landscape, when a young woman unexpectedly returns to the ranch home she left seven years earlier, to visit her dying, comatose father, to the surprise of her younger brother who remained and is struggling to handle their father’s final affairs. In the contemporary Western drama Montana Story, Haley Lu Richardson and Owen Teague play the sister and brother, who work through their feelings about their difficult father and their own past history, as they deal with the financially grim situation their dying parent leaves behind. Say “Montana” to anyone currently consuming a well-balanced media diet, and they’re likely to immediately think of Yellowstone, the unbelievably popular Dynasty-for-cowboys TV show that takes place in the “Treasure State.” Taylor Sheridan’s modern-day Western doesn’t have a lock on contemporary narratives in the region, to be sure, but it does cast a slightly odd shadow over the similarly looming landscapes of Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s Montana Story. They even have a handful of coincidentally similar aspects in common: Both have ill fathers at their centers,...

“Montana Story,” the latest film from longtime co-directors Scott McGhee and David Siegel, opens on chickens.
It’s an apt first note for this pastoral story, where everyday life acts as a backdrop for wrenching character backstories. The script is a touch too novelistic and the ending rather predictable, but pitch-perfect performances keep this melodrama from slipping too far into mawkishness.
The titular story is one of two estranged, 20-something siblings reunited over their comatose father. At first only Cal, played by Owen Teague (“It”), shows up to get everything in order. He struggles to pay their longtime housekeeper, Valentina; to reconcile his father’s debts; and to re-home his beloved (but now ancient) childhood horse. A seismic shock arrives in the form of his sister, Erin (the excellent Haley Lu Richardson), from whom he hasn’t heard in seven years.

If Brad Pitt were a geek, and a gravely serious one — not a more serious actor but a more doleful and pensive presence — he’d be something like Owen Teague. At 23, Teague has been acting since his teens, mostly on television and in occasional movies like “It,” and he resembles Pitt — the swept-back hair and bee-stung scowl, the sullen thick-featured handsomeness set off by a pair of earnest eyebrows. Okay, he’s not as gorgeous (who is?). But even when he’s doing nothing, Teague holds the screen with what feels like a youthful version of the Pitt magnetism. (Pitt was close to 30 when he hit it big in “Thelma & Louise.”) He’s a soulful and intriguing actor who, I predict, is going to go far.

It takes a certain amount of expertise to build a narrative without telling the audience everything as soon as possible. In Montana Story, filmmakers Scott McGehee and David Siegel demonstrate incredible restraint and a hefty trust in their audience. The basic premise: two siblings converge to face old sins and lingering scars as their father lies comatose in the final days of his life. McGehee and Siegel have been turning out impressive pictures for thirty years; this is their most nuanced to date.

"Every night I wake up, and I think, 'that can't be what happened.'" This originally premeired at the 2021 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Cleveland, Seattle, and San Francisco Film Festivals this year. Two estranged siblings return home to the sprawling ranch they once knew and loved, confronting a deep and bitter family legacy against a mythic American backdrop. It's described as "neo-Western with an emotional tremor," with reviews saying it "evokes a grandiose style of American frontier filmmaking, somewhere between John Ford and Kelly Reichardt." Starring Haley Lu Richardson & Owen Teague, with Gilbert Owuor, Kimberly Guerrero, Eugene Brave Rock, and Asivak Koostachin. This looks like a really lovely, heartfelt film. It’s often said that the Western genre is a barometer for the American psyche, with the best Western films reflecting the values and anxieties of the era in which they were made. If that’s true, “Montana Story” is a perfect example. The latest film from “The Deep End” directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel uses the Mythic West as a backdrop to examine repressed family drama and crippling medical expenses, topics that are certainly top of mind these days for many Americans. The indie filmmaking duo have not released a new film since 2012’s “What Maisie Knew,” but a new trailer for “Montana Story” suggests a welcome return to form for them. Watch it exclusively on IndieWire below.

“Catch the Fair One” is activist filmmaking at its most compelling. Before you run away from the notion, consider this: It doesn’t feel like this tough, relentlessly dark thriller is trying to push some kind of political point, even if so many of its creative choices succeed in doing exactly that.
Collaborating with Native boxing champ Kali “Ko” Reis on the script, director Josef Kubota Wladyka has made a riveting vigilante story that can hold its own alongside Paul Schrader’s most punishing payback fantasies. Imagine daughter-rescue drama “Hardcore” with a female fighter in the George C. Scott role, or an inversion of revenge-minded “The Card Counter,” where it’s an above-the-law human trafficker rather than a torture-condoning U.S. general being taught a lesson at the end.
Such movies can sometimes feel overly nihilistic, as unflinching filmmakers set a self-destructive individual plunging into the darkest corners of the American dream.

Like its title, the opening shot of Montana Story tells us exactly where we are, as the morning sun peeks over the craggy mountaintops of Big Sky Country. But the sweeping landscapes here — captured by cinematographer Giles Nuttgens with a casual embrace of their beauty that never falls into the postcard trap of majestic awe — serve a different purpose. The idea that all the panoramic splendor equates to a sense of peace and belonging is called into question by damaged characters fumbling for perspective in Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s affecting drama, its tight ensemble led by performances of heart-searing sensitivity from Haley Lu Richardson and Owen Teague.
Since their head-turning 1993 debut with Suture, McGehee and Siegel have been making smart, distinctive movies about knotty family ties, notably the neo-noir The Deep End and an underappreciated contemporary Henry James adaptation, What Maisie Knew.

Cal (Owen Teague) arrives on a large Montana spread, his long face and hesitant gait foretelling what his father’s large wooden, picturesque home holds. When he enters, an overbearing beeping sound arises, and a kind-spoken Kenyan nurse named Ace (Gilbert Owuor) greets him. Cal’s father had a stroke. He’s now lying in the living room in a permanent coma attached to life support. The ranch isn’t in much better shape: A lapsed mortgage, no cattle, a 25-year-old stallion on its last legs, and a few chickens account for what remains.
Cal tries to shoulder the burden alone until his estranged sister Erin (a profound Haley Lu Richardson) makes an unannounced appearance. The pair haven’t spoken for seven years. Back then, Erin outed their father in the school paper as a lawyer covering up a toxic mess at a local mine. Their father attacked her, beating her nearly to death,...

The small towns of Oklahoma aren’t often seen on-screen. In fact, the new FX on Hulu show “Reservation Dogs,” which debuted Aug. 9, is the first scripted television series to film the entirety of its season in the state.
Authenticity was imperative to Sterlin Harjo, co-creator along with Taika Waititi of the half-hour comedy, which revolves around four teenagers who live on a reservation and dream of moving to California. Harjo, who grew up in Oklahoma, called on production designer Brandon Tonner-Connolly to find the right organic look in towns like Okmulgee, center of the Muscogee reservation. For a “heightened sensibility to make the sets cinematic,” Tonner-Connolly says he enhanced the color palette of the homes and other places he saw in the community, as well as adding story-driven particulars.
For instance, in Episode 4, when the teens visit Auntie B (Kimberly Guerrero), who does beadwork, at her apartment, “we wanted...

IFC Films has acquired U.S. rights to “Catch the Fair One,” a thriller from “Narcos” director Josef Kubota Wladyka that stars real-life professional boxer, Kali “K.O.” Reis. The deal comes after “Catch the Fair One” debuted at the 2021 Tribeca Film Festival, where it received warm reviews and captured the Audience Award and a Special Jury mention for Reis’ performance.
It was a role that Reis helped develop in conjunction with Wladyka, who wrote the screenplay based on a story she created. And it’s also a film that drew on her experiences as the first Indigenous fighter to win the International Boxing Association middleweight crown and the reigning Wba Super lightweight champion.
“Catch the Fair One” follows Kaylee “K.O.” Uppashaw (Reis), a former boxer, as she discovers that her missing sister is possibly alive and circulating in a trafficking network. She plugs herself into this dark and dangerous world to find her,...

Following Rose Byrne‘s portrayal of Gloria Steinem in the limited series “Mrs. America,” the feminist icon gets the full biopic treatment with “The Glorias.” The latest film from visionary director Julie Taymor finds Academy Award winners Alicia Vikander and Julianne Moore portraying Steinem at different ages as she founds “Ms.” magazine and rises in prominence as a leader in the women’s liberation movement. The film, which co-stars Bette Midler, Janelle Monae, Timothy Hutton and Lorraine Toussaint, is free on Amazon Prime Video. But is it worth the watch? Let’s look into some critic reviews.
Most reviews praise the performances, even if the structure of the film is divisive. As one reviewer notes, “While Taymor’s film overall lacks fluidity, their performances do fit with surprising neatness into a single, steadily evolving characterization.” Some laud Moore for playing the most recognizable version of Steinem while others believe that “Vikander is the highlight here,...

As September comes to a close and October brings in autumnal vibes, the country (and the world for that matter) is focusing on two things: the forthcoming November election and the end of the world. Luckily, in this early edition of this week’s specialty preview, we have something that is relevant to both!
After making its world premiere at Sundance, Julie Taymor’s The Glorias is ready to disrupt the system. Ld Entertainment and Roadside Attractions will debut the civic-minded and socially aware film on Amazon Prime Video starting today — and it couldn’t be a more perfect time.
Ahead of the November election, The Glorias is based on feminist icon Gloria Steinem’s book Life on the Road. Co-written by Taymor and Sarah Ruhl the nontraditional biopic paints a portrait of one of the inspirational figures of modern history. Steinem became a prominent figure that defined era and a generation.
