Actress Mirrah Foulkes makes her directorial debut with “Judy & Punch,” a violent and revisionist tale that looks more like “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” goes to the puppet show than your classic Punch and Judy story. The period piece, which launched at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2019 and was followed by a robust tour on the festival circuit, finally hits theaters in the U.S. on April 24, courtesy of Samuel Goldwyn Films.
Set in an anarchic town known as Seaside, which happens to be nowhere near the sea, married puppeteers Judy (Mia Wasikowska) and Punch (Damon Herriman) are struggling to resurrect their marionette show. The show is a hit thanks to Judy’s deft puppeteering skills but due to Punch’s jealousy-fueled ambition — and his tendency to hit the bottle too hard — the show is thrust into tragedy. Foulkes’ updated take on the classic 16th-century puppet show,...

Terry Norris and Benedict Hardie in ‘Judy & Punch.’
After portraying a succession of dastardly or less than noble characters in films and TV series, Benedict Hardie welcomed the chance to play someone with at least a few redeeming qualities in Judy & Punch.
In Mirrah Foulkes’ brutal, dark re-interpretation of the puppet play which opens in Australian cinemas on Thursday via Madman Entertainment, he plays Constable Derrick.
The lone cop in the wryly-named inland town of Seaside, Derrick struggles to maintain law and order as Damon Herriman’s narcissistic Punch causes mayhem after his much-abused wife Judy (Mia Wasikowska) vanishes.
“It was such a pleasure to make that film,” he tells If. “The script was like nothing any of us has read. Derrick becomes an emotional touchstone for the audience as an outsider looking at this mad world.

(L-r) Greg McLean, Phoebe Tonkin, Bryan Brown, Glen Dolman.
During filming of Stan’s Bloom in Victoria last year the creator/showrunner Glen Dolman was already hatching ideas for a second series of the supernatural drama.
So when Stan’s Mike Sneesby and Nick Forward ordered another six episodes in April after he pitched an overview Dolman pressed ahead with plans to bring a fresh perspective to the show.
That involved hiring new directors in Greg McLean and Sian Davies (who collaborated on Stan’s The Gloaming), assembling a new team of writers and adding half a dozen fresh faces to the cast, with the assistance of casting director Leigh Pickford.
Joining him in the writers’ room are Giula Sandler, Matt Ford, Tommy Murphy and Catherine S McMullen. Dolman scripted four of the six eps of the first series, which was named Drama Series Production of the Year at last...

Though Sundance is always awash in empowerment tales both fictive and non, this year the climate of political discord seems to have inspired an even larger batch than usual, particularly those that address misogyny. And there’s unlikely to be another such title in 2019 that thinks so far outside the creative box to score its points as “Judy & Punch,” Aussie thesp-turned-writer-director Mirrah Foulkes’ first feature.
Located somewhere on the fanciful continuum between Wiccan fable and Monty Python farce, this is a tale of domestic-violence revenge set in a satirical-whimsical land of never-was. The core narrative is rather simple, and the political metaphor not especially subtle. But the overall concept, from Foulkes and her trio of story collaborators, has a bracingly original air, from the film’s period anachronisms to its impressive design elements. Slick as a mid-budget mainstream popcorn fantasy (though in spirit anything but), it’s a sure bet for lively distribution bidding; still,...

Damien Garvey and Mark Mitchinson in ‘Rake’.
As a regular in the ABC’s Rake since the second series, Damien Garvey has a ready explanation as to why the fifth series is the last.
“This series plays more like a documentary than a satire,” says Garvey, who plays Cal McGregor, the resilient former government minister, jailbird and now blow-hard TV show host.
“The scripts were written 12 or 15 months ago, depicting the most ridiculous scenes. Now you turn on the TV and what you see is very similar. You can’t make up enough stories like that about politics anymore.”
In Sunday night’s episode Cal was offered a vacant seat in the House and a ministerial portfolio while his ambitious wife Jane (Sonia Todd) has her eyes on the seat.

A big-hearted story about a boy aiming for a place in the Tokyo paper-plane finals
Dami Im’s cover of Macy Gray’s Beauty in the World sets the upbeat tone for this Australian domestic hit about a kid aiming for the Tokyo paper-plane finals. Inspired by a 2009 episode of the TV series Australian Story, Robert Connolly’s big-hearted drama finds redemption in folded paper as young Dylan (The Visit’s Ed Oxenbould) aims his darts at his bereaved father’s heart. Sam Worthington looks suitably bereft as the widower who can’t connect with his motherless child, but Terry Norris steals the show as the irrepressible grandpa who has little intention of putting his rakish fighter-pilot past behind him.

★★★☆☆ Cut-up family tragicomedy Looking for Grace (2015) is Sue Brooks' fifth feature film and premièred in competition at the Venice Film Festival today. Odessa Young plays Grace, a young girl who for motives unknown has decided to go walkabout with her friends Sapph (Kenya Pearson). Travelling across West Australia on a bus, they meet up with a young chap Jamie (Harry Richardson), who takes a shine to Grace, much to the chagrin of Sapph who decides to head back home. Things don't quite work out the way Grace was hoping and she is left without money in the outback, but just when things look to be heading a familiarly depressing route, mum and dad turn up in the family car.
This anticlimax is only the beginning as the film divides up achronologically into distinct chapters which each follow a separate character, often revisiting scenes from new perspectives. Such narrative play feels a bit thin,...

DoP Mark Wareham with Matthew Saville with Anthony Lapaglia.
.
On paper the shooting schedule sounded logistically daunting: 20 days for a feature film starring Anthony Lapaglia, Justine Clarke, Julia Blake and John Clarke.
As it turned out, filming comedic drama A Month of Sundays in Adelaide proved relatively easy, much to the surprise of writer-director Matthew Saville.
.Thanks to the cast, crew and logistic simplicity of shooting in Adelaide, it all went very smoothly,. Saville tells If during a break from the editing suite.
Produced by Madman Production Company.s Nick Batzias and Kirsty Stark, the film stars Lapaglia as Frank Mollard, a real estate agent whose life takes an unexpected turn when he receives a call from his dead mother, sending him on a journey of redemption.
Justine Clarke plays Frank.s estranged wife, with John Clarke as his boss/friend and Blake as the woman at the heart of a life-changing new relationship.

Chicago – “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader” is a well-intentioned blockbuster, a morally and spiritually strong piece about heroism and believing in yourself that bursts at the seams with the kind of striking visual imagery that keeps the little ones entertained long enough for them to possibly even learn something. It’s far from a great film as it drags and meanders to nearly two hours and contains a few awkward child performances, but it looks stunning on Blu-ray and Fox has put together another solid family offering for clans with HD capability.
Blu-Ray Rating: 3.5/5.0
After the success of “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe,” which made a stunning $745 million worldwide, it looked like C.S. Lewis’ beloved series would probably make it to the screen in its entirety and challenge “Lord of the Rings” and “Harry Potter” for fantasy dollar supremacy.

Check out the new, feature trailer for “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, the third installment in the “Narnia” series. Along the way they encounter dragons, dwarves, merfolk, and a band of lost warriors before reaching the edge of the world. Starring Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes, Georgie Henley, Will Poulter, Bill Nighy, Gary Sweet, Arthur Angel, Tony Nixon, Shane Rangi, Colin Moody, Terry Norris, David Vallon, Bruce Spence, Bille Brown, Liam Neeson and directed by Michael Apted. The latest “Voyage of the Dawn Treader” trailer hails from overseas. For the third film in a successful fantasy franchise, it’s interesting how little buzz, or fanboy interest the film has gotten with just another couple months to go before its release. Fox Walden has released the first trailer for their third “Narnia” film, “The Voyage of the Dawn Treader”, which reunites those indefatigable English orphans with the magical land of Narnia, where things like talking lions, sword-wielding mouses, and Universal Health Care are possible. Wait, what? No Universal Health Care in Narnia? Oh well, at least they have talking lions and sword-wielding mouses. Those are cool. Check out the fist trailer for the franchise’s first 3D offering below.
