A double-shot of arthouse exploitation awesomeness comes to Blu-ray. Last week we posted an interview with American indie filmmaker Frederick R. Friedel, in which the intelligent, articulate exploitation auteur recounted the trials and tribulations of making his first foray into moviemaking, 1974’s Lisa, Lisa which was later bought by notorious distributor Harry Novak and re-released…

It was very sad to hear of the passing of Mike Vraney on January 2nd, he was only 56 years old. Anyone who is a true movie geek, film fan, or cinema addict owes him a debt of thanks. With Something Weird Video Vraney made available hundreds, if not thousands of hours of rare, obscure and vintage films, most of which were, well..really weird.
Consider his association with Dave Friedman and H,G. Lewis, Swv put out virtually their entire catalog of films first on VHS and then dvd. Not to mention the films of Harry Novak, Coffin Joe and his bizarre films from South America and many other rare titles that were impossible to see, not so long ago.
Swv put out hundreds of collections of nudie cutie loops, stag films, trailers for drive-in swill and compilations of highway safety and class room instructional films.

The low-budget exploitation film of the golden grindhouse heyday ('60s through early '80s) comes in many shapes and colors, from the clumsy, quirkily "erotic" sexploitation quickies of Harry Novak, to young Abel Ferrara's stark tales of blood-soaked city streets. The exploitation films that tend to resonate the most with horror fans are the darker, grittier films that are uncompromising and seemingly cloaked in danger and doom. When it all works correctly, the grimy residue of a lurid, unsettling exploitation movie's atmosphere will haunt you for days. Certainly, this atmosphere can be (and often is) achieved via on-screen violence and gore - which is fine by me. However,...

Your Hands Are Bleeding! Your Hands Are Bleeding! Lee Demarbre Talks About His New Film Smash Cut
Lee Demarbre, the Ottawa-based talent behind Canadian cult films Jesus Christ, Vampire Hunter and The Dead Sleep Easy turns in his most self-reflexive work to date - a tribute to pioneering exploitation director Herschell Gordon Lewis set in the unsympathetic world of contemporary independent filmmaking!
Grindhouse titan David Hess (The Last House On The Left, House On The Edge Of The Park, Hitch-hike) stars as Able Whitman, a down-on-his-luck horror filmmaker subject to relentless mockery from obnoxious critics and jaded audiences alike. It seems that nobody likes his latest film Terror Toy, or finds its killer – a foot-high clown named 'Bobo' – very believable. After a car accident with no witnesses leaves a stripper friend dead and in pieces, Whitman is struck with a revelation - he'll use real body parts in his film!

In the 1990s, Something Weird Video struck a deal with producer and distributor Harry Novak to release many titles from his company Box Office International on VHS tape. One of the titles that stood out from weird, sleazy flood was a Danish film called The Sinful Dwarf (Dværgen) . In addition to the usualy cheap thrills, the movie had a rare, secret ingredient: a drooling, perverted dwarf. When Image Entertainment released dozens of Something Weird titles on DVD, The Sinful Dwarf was allegedly skipped because the company thought it went too far. Now, Severin Films has released the film on U.S. DVD so people can judge for themselves.
