Robert Lieberman, who directed films including Fire in the Sky and D3: The Mighty Ducks, episodes of The X-Files, Dexter and Criminal Minds and thousands of commercials, has died. He was 75.
Lieberman died July 1 in Los Angeles after a long battle with cancer, his son, Nick Lieberman, who co-directed Searchlight Pictures’ Theater Camp, which hit the big screen this weekend, announced.
Lieberman helmed TV spots for such companies as McDonald’s, Hallmark and Oreo and worked with talent ranging from President Clinton, Ray Charles and Jerry Lewis to Michael Jordan, Anne Hathaway and Kenan Thompson. He received more than two dozen Clio Awards and, in 1979, the inaugural DGA Award for commercials.
Much of his work was done through Harmony Pictures, the company he founded with Stuart Gross.

Many horror fans consider Fire in the Sky to be the most terrifying alien abduction movie ever made, with one scene in particular being among the scariest in the genre’s history.
Released in theaters in 1993, Fire in the Sky was based on Travis Walton’s book The Walton Experience, which itself was based on Walton’s real-life tales of alien abduction.

The distributor plans to release on VOD and digital platforms on December 10 followed by theatrical on December 13.

Once again, Tribeca Film’s Nick Savva doesn’t need to look too far to find some theatrical slate filler. Among the pile of unbought leftovers from the ’13 edition of Tribeca Film Festival, the U.S. rights to Neil Labute’s latest drama have been picked up by the indie distrib label. Tribeca Film acquired U.S. rights to Neil Labute’s Some Velvet Morning. Stanley Tucci and Alice Eve star in the relationship drama written and directed by Labute and produced by Tim Harms, Daryl Freimark, Michael Corrente, Trent Othick, and David Zander. Pic premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and Tribeca plans a theatrical and on-demand release platform in December. Pic is about a man who shows up on the doorstep of his mistress after a four-year absence. He says he has finally left his wife, but she isn’t interested and he becomes obsessed with her and things get ugly. It’ll come out on multiple platforms December 10 and reach some theaters three days later. Submarine repped the film.

A large ensemble of actors are on the move for the indie comedy Standing Still for Mean People Suck helmer Matthew Weiss. Adam Garcia and Amy Adams will team to play a couple on the verge of getting married who gather their group of friends for a few days of prewedding celebrations. Starring in the ensemble along with the duo are Mena Suvari, James Van Der Beek, James Duval, Colin Hanks, Aaron Stanford, Jon Abrahams, Melissa Sagemiller, Ethan Embry, Lauren German, Xander Berkeley, Nikki Ziering, Marne Patterson and helmer Roger Avary starring As Himself. The project, penned by Matthew Perniciaro and Timm Sharp, is described as a Gen Y version of The Big Chill. Trent Othick is producing, with Lorenzo Fertitta, Tim Poster and Tom Breitling serving as executive producers. Karen Meisels, who headed the casting for the film, will receive co-producer credit. Weiss is repped by Nick Osborne and Trevor Ingleson's Mission Management and attorney Allison Binder at Stone, Meyer & Genow.
